- I actually didn't have to drive this train myself, but with the chance of beautiful lighting conditions and hopefully a rainbow, I arranged for me to drive it. Thank goodness, because now I can show you how spectacular a train driver's view can be. We drive continuously behind a dark rain cloud, while the sun illuminates the landscape. From time to time you see the faint beginnings of a rainbow, which unfortunately does not want to become fully visible. Enjoy watching!

Eigenlijk hoefde ik deze trein niet zelf te besturen, maar met de kans op prachtige lichtomstandigheden en hopelijk een regenboog heb ik geregeld dat ik deze wèl mocht rijden. Gelukkig maar, want nu kan ik jullie laten zien hoe spectaculair het uitzicht van een machinist kan zijn. We rijden continue achter een donkere regenwolk, terwijl de zon het landschap belicht. Van tijd tot tijd zie je het vage begin van een regenboog, die helaas maar niet geheel zichtbaar wil worden. Veel kijkplezier!

36:19 : at the left the 'Ham toren'. Part of what is left of the castle Den Ham, near Vleuten. Probably built around 1260, first mentioned in a muniment from 1325.

Groeten uit Siberië - uit de stad waar de regen nu is neergedaald. Gezellige route, prachtige omgeving en enkele gebouwen. Ik vond de “dans” van de windgeneratoren (12:34) en Koploper vanuit een ongebruikelijke hoek (30:16) erg leuk. Het is grappig dat het tijdstip waarop de video werd opgenomen en het tijdstip waarop ik ernaar keek bijna samenvielen. Vincent, bedankt en een fijne dag!

This is indeed a nice video! Thanks a lot! It must have been 20 years since I last traveled on this route. I remember back then it was pretty bumpy, and no double track between Leiden and Alphen.Now it looks like a smooth ride. And I guess a bit quicker as well, with speeds of up to 140km/h. I did spot the rainbow on the left side, even though it was very faint.

I've counted a total of five classic Dutch windmills that are visible from this cabview along the line, can you spot the other four also?
One is a bit further away from the track than the rest, so it appears short and tiny on the left side.

On 9:15 you see an enormous slip from the driving wheels Sometime's you may hear the pitch change from the tractionmotors Due to slippery tracks I never have seen this on a Sprinter If this occur in the SGM the hell broke loose These old railcars have no automatic control to prevent skidding so the engines can explode due to overspeed if the driver does not control it himself Luckely here it is a modern SLT train with autorecover slip on the traction motors
I believe (pretty sure) the SGM had an anti slip system. But the SGM was a lot lighter than the SLT, so more wheelspin on slippery track. The SLT's system was supposed to be more sofisticated, but it is not. The driver still needs to cut power when slip is occurring.
At 11:07 you can see on the right part of the tunnel that sticks above ground.

Very brilliantly colorful! How crisp the video is, like looking through a window. The information is very geographical and interesting. It is amazing to me that the railroads in Europe must earn hundreds of millions of dollars every day in fares, if not more than that. I wonder what percentage of the fares it takes to operate, maintain, and repair the railroads on a daily, monthly, and yearly basis, and what kinds of unexpected expenses do they have? Very nice ride, thank you.

Interesting. Surprised at just how flat it is. Should make railway construction cheaper and easier as no tunnels or mountainsides to blast through. But maybe the water table presents other issues. Also surprising was so many high-rise apartment blocks. A pleasant run but maybe not so much as a passenger as it was apparently so crowded.

Een prachtige video met echt Nederlandse luchten.
Er is mij als "seinwezenfreak" iets opgevallen.
In het traject Leiden - Woerden liggen vier beweegbare spoorbruggen en dit zijn bijzondere gevaarpunten.
Maar bij geen van deze punten staan wel seinen maar deze seinen zijn niet voorzien van het sein SR 251a en dat verbaast mij; weet jij waarom dit het geval is of is het "foutje" van ProRail.

Ja. Goed gezien. De afweging om het bord gevaarpunt te plaatsen heeft te maken met de mate van eentonigheid die voorafgaat aan het gevaarpunt. In theorie dekt elk bediend sein een gevaarpunt, maar als elk bediend sein het bordje gevaarpunt zou dragen is de functie ervan zinloos.

It's amazing to see the contrast between a traditional windmill and a wind turbine stood in proximity! The large number of passengers that caused the conductor/train manager safety issues made me wonder whether this service would be better served by VIRM than a Sprinter set. It has been a while since you last had video footage from this route, was it a Koploper or VIRM last time? Were the wet rails giving the Sprinter traction issues?
It used to be a Virm or Ddz. Yes, tracks were very slippery.
Then it would be a Sprintercity lol as the service was a regular sprinter (it stopped at all stations).
And....did you catch-up with the cloud/rain?

Out of curiosity, why is it hard to keep the train still once the passenger doors are closed? Does the train start moving automatically, or do you mean it's just easy to bump the throttle?

Thank you for another fantastic video. On some of the bridges, there are no overhead wires. Do you have to lower the pantograph for these bridges?
It depends. I'm not an expert on the subject, but I believe some bridges without overhead wires don't require the pantograph to be lowered. That is if your train has the height limiter on the pantograph set to the Dutch standard.
But don't pin me on this, because I'm not sure if I remember it correctly.
Shortly after the green signal at 8:00 there's a blue diamond shaped sign at 8:13 with a white bar and 2 white blocks. That means to lower the pantograph. After the bridge you see the same sign but now the bar and blocks are connected to form a U-profile. That means to raise the pantograph again. The numbers on the bottom left of these signs tell you when to raise the pantograph(s), corresponding to the number of cars for train units.
In this specific case it seems like there's a mistake in the signs there, because you see a 2 two times and then a 6. Normally it would be 2, 4 and 6.

De Dubbele Wierickebrug ziet er niet uit als 18 meter om eerlijk te zijn. Eerder 8 of korter. Maar dat kan ook aan het perspectief liggen natuurlijk.
Mijn woonkamer is zo'n beetje (bijna precies) 6 meter lang, en dat lijkt overeen te komen met de brug. (⏸28:08)
Nameten op de kaart geeft 18 meter. Het gaat om de totale overspanning, niet alleen het beweegbare deel. De verhoudingen zijn altijd lastig te vergelijken omdat alles bij het spoor zo groot is.

Niet meer. Ze hebben de naam aangepast van intercity naar sprinter (Denk vooral vanwege de doorkoppeling naar Den Bosch) en doordeweeks Stopt ie overdag ook nog op Leidsche Rijn dus is het meer een soort 4900 geworden. Maar ja ik snap wel wat je bedoelt want gewoonlijk rijdt ie non-stop van Utrecht naar Woerden. Op het moment dat ie dat ook doet vind ik het ook een sprintercity maar nu zijn daar nog maar weinig kenmerken van over
Ik keek net even maar deze rit bleek de 8900 serie te zijn en dat is een volledige sprinter. :)
En stopt dus op elke station, dus geen Sprintercity maar een spitssprinter :D

To really capture the sky well, especially with a Gopro:
Set exposure to -1 or -1.5 all cameras
GOPRO: NEVER use the “gopro” or “natural” color profile but “flat color”!!!
- White balance fixed at 5500k, NEVER automatic!!! ( all cameras)
all caméras: neutral color profil, never "standard" or "vivid"
The image will be less dark but also the sky will be rendered. Currently, it is almost systematically overexposed and the colors are not real (Instagram style color profile typical of modern default settings).
Colors are almost straight out of the cam, just minimal grading. Upgrading to 10bit HDR soon, which will improve quality a lot.
@@CabviewHolland It's not the 8 or 10 bit encoding that's the problem, but the camera output color profile which is that of the "Gopro" by default, just take the flat color profile and underexpose by -1.5 EV and the result is miraculous, it becomes "a real camera" which has nothing to envy of the big cameras (in high light... in low light the reality of the small sensor manifests itself). Certainly in 10 bits we should be able to correct it i, post-prod, on the other hand, if it's a Gopro10, the default profile remains terrible, what I saw in 10 bits distorts the gradient of the skies by the "HDR" effect, but I don't know not who is responsible, but it is the visible problem of the 10-bit Gopro (the 11).
The Gopro7 and 8 (9, 10 also I suppose) were in full 8 bits (PC yuvj420 format) a format better than yuv420 but not
@@JeanThevenetThanks for thinking with me. This is no gopro. I never reveal my technique, but the big problem with these videos is that they are one long shot. I have to depend on auto exposure as conditions vary constantly. It is impossible to prevent overexposure for the whole video. The re-processing and way too low bitrate that YT does to my videos, does not do any good to the video either…

Solution to the problem of reprocessing by RUclips: avoid too strong an accentuation, as well as too high a contrast (forced sharpness, too high contrast profile increases the micro-contrast therefore the bit rate to be encoded, thus worsening the degradation on RUclips), a slightly accentuated image is much less degraded.
Here is what a 2.7K60 flat profile video gives with a Gopro 7 under exposure -1.5: see, we see everything, and above all it is the real colors.

This camera comes with 8-bit PC and only 60Mb/s which is not much, and yet the rendering is very real: I am nostalgic for this quality, when these cameras were in service, as long as they are well adjusted, the landscape and especially the sky was not massacred. FPV drone pilots mainly used the Gopro6.
And here is what a “default” setting of this type of camera typically gives: burnt out sky, blocked shadows…

It is thus through an excess of contrast and color that modern cameras with this type of adjustment do not capture shadows or clouds, and are always overexposed for skies. The rule of underexposing for landscape is not new, in film slides in the 1970s it was the same rule with a light meter with a Retina, I remember it very well, then with the Minox. My Nikon Coolpix A and D7000 did not change this rule, neither did the Gopro6, 7 and 8...

11 Euros. Wow, the same length of journey here is 33.71 Euros, for a return. What is the return fare for the journey in this video please - just want to see how much our train operators are ripping us off. That price is based on a discount of 1/3 off the normal fare - the normal fare without any discount would be 50.55 Euros. So over double what it would cost you good people in the Netherlands. My advice, if you come to the UK, only use the train if you have to because of time restraints. If you are happy to do a slower but cheaper option, use buses or coaches to get around. They may be slower, but they are also between 60-70% cheaper than the train.
Wow.. In the Netherlands you pay per km, so return fare is twice single fare.
Average punctuality only 88%? What is it about this route that cause so many delays? Does the route interact with so many others that their delays that mess this route? That is to say, does this route have so many little dependencies from itself and across the rest of the network that can break and cause problems? I bet NS is working hard to improve this record. Aha 0 singke track, That about doubles the dependencies that can break.
