Dylan, Petty and the Heartbreakers performed this song as the "encore" for their concert at the Tacoma Dome back in 1987. I loved their rendition, but had long since despaired of ever finding any recording of it, so--thanks so much for publishing this!

@@tomwhelan220 i absolutely know this relates no way in titles and quality of voice but I think Amy winehouse does this the same. Very authentic. A different live everytime. It’s so better I think than sounding like the recording yk. The emphasis on certain endings and starts of words Amy winehouse does too. I enjoy it so much. Love Bob dearly.

    There's a place where I've been told
Every street is paved with gold
And it's just across the borderline
And when it's time to take your turn
Here's one lesson that you must learn
You could lose more than you'll ever hope to find
When you reach the broken promised land
And every dream slips through your hands
Then you'll know that it's too late to change your mind
'Cause you've paid the price to come so far
Just to wind up where you are
And you're still just across the borderline
Up and down the Rio Grande
A thousand footprints in the sand
Reveal a secret no one can define
The river flows on like a breath
In between our life and death
Tell me who's the next to cross the borderline
En la triste oscuridad (In the sad darkness)
Hoy tenemos que cruzar (today we have to cross)
Este rio que nos llama mas alla (this river which calls us further away)
But hope remains when pride is gone
And it keeps you moving on
    Calling you across the borderline
When you reach the broken promised land
Every dream slips through your hands
And you'll know it's too late to change your mind
'Cause you pay the price to come so far
Just to wind up where you are
And you're still just across the borderline
Now you're still just across the borderline
And you're still just across the borderline

It’s never really the case that an artist’s song can be better done better by someone else because of the sheer nature of original song. Sorry to the original writer/ singer but this is one of those times where Dylan takes a great song and makes it greater. It is Dylan after all who has been created to serve God well.

Hay un lugar, eso me han dicho
    There's a place, so I've been told
Cada calle está pavimentada con oro.
Every street is paved with gold
Y está justo al otro lado de la frontera
And it's just across the borderline
Y cuando sea el momento de tomar tu turno
And when it's time to take your turn
Hay una lección que debes aprender
There's a lesson that you must learn
Puedes perder más de lo que ganarás
You may lose more than you'll
    Alguna vez espero encontrar
    Ever hope to find
Y cuando llegues a esa tierra prometida rota
And when you reach that broken promised land
Y todos tus sueños se escapan de tu mano
And all your dreams slip though your hand
Has aprendido que es demasiado tarde
You have learned it's too late
    Para cambiar de opinión
    To change your mind
Porque pagas el precio por llegar tan lejos
Cause you pay the price to come so far
    Sólo para terminar donde estás
Just to wind up where you are
Y todavía estás al otro lado del límite
And you're still just across the borderline
Arriba y abajo El Río Grande
Up and down The Rio Grande
    Mil huellas en la arena
A thousand foot prints in the sand
Revelar un secreto que nadie puede definir
Reveal a secret no one can define
El río avanza como un soplo
The river rolls on like a breath
Entre nuestra vida y nuestra muerte
In between our life and death
Dime quién es el próximo en cruzar esa frontera
Tell me who is next to cross that borderline
Y cuando llegues a esa tierra prometida rota
And when you reach that broken promised land
Y todos tus sueños se escapan de tu mano
And all your dreams slip though your hand
Sabrás que es demasiado tarde para cambiar de opinión.
You'll know it's too late to change your mind
Porque pagas el precio por llegar tan lejos
Cause you pay the price to come so far
    Sólo para terminar donde estás
Just to wind up where you are

It fits this line in ''Ain't Gonna Go to Hell for Anybody'': ''But it don't suit my purposes, it ain't my goal

I hadn't listened to this song for a long time and just read some of the comments and learned that Bob didn't write this song and was title of Willie Nelson's album. I found out that it was written by Ry Cooder, John Hiatt, and Jim Dickinson - it shows 1986 online, so guessing was a brand new song. My husband started learning how to play the Blues Harp about that time and became a big Ry Cooder fan, and we saw him perform in Sonoma County.

I was at this show, The Dead opened with two full sets. At the time I thought that the cost of $25 for Dylan, Petty and The Dead on a Fourth of July was outrageous.

+birdleso Also, this show was in Buffalo, NY. The people I was with, including me, had no idea it was part of Farm Aid, until an announcement by Bob Weir during the Dead's first set that we were going to be going out live via satellite.

Always loved Dylan singing “Across the Borderline “. He seems to be using a rock format ; Bob knows how to move people. There is more reality in Bob’s singing and songwriting than any movie , news report , elected politician , documentary , or history book!

Farm Aid - Austin Texas was originally billed as Willie's Picnic - then all these people showed up. The lines were long getting to the site. But was worth it - as far as I remember.

The song is about death, not an actual borderline but it cracks me up to see people who think it is. It's saying people say the other side is "paved with gold" but we all know there's probably nothing and they'll "lose more than they could ever find".

Only Bob can be so magical. Across the bordeline, spending the night with some sweet senorita, romance in Durango, he made me want to go to Mexico with all that stuff! No harm done though, I crossed the borderline (actually the ocean), didn't find any gold there, didn't get shot, but I sure found me a sweet senorita:) Cheers Bob!
