The name Forty-six & 2 comes from a theory regarding human chromosomes. We get 23 from our mother and 23 from our father combining to 46 chromosomes. The added 2 (meaning 48 total) extra is believed to create almost a super human. It wouldn’t actually work but the theory is used as a metaphor for evolving and growing as a person. This song is about confronting your jungian shadow. Your internal person who is the base of yourself and expanding on that to discover who you really are. Very complex title for a deep and personal song!
why would it not work? People with down syndrome have 47 and the theory is the reason they have complications is because of the missing or added ONE chromosome , think of it like a n 8 cylinder engine only running on 7 cylinders , it is not going to run properly. Same as our body if it is operating on an odd number of Chromosomes

Great reaction. You were right when saying, it's someone that lives in their mind, as well as about the subconscious mind. It's referring to "Shadow Work," which is a way of searching out and dealing with past traumas, resentment, self loathing, etc., so you can heal and move on.
the way you work through this is so secure brother. Doing this in front of us exposes yourself, but it is so wonderful to see. This music improves life.

Someone has probably already said this to you about Tool before but just in case…Definitely listen to a Tool song before even diving into lyrics. You gotta let your body and soul dig it and feel it before opening up the mind to what Maynard is telling (teaching) you. I’m all about lyrics too so I appreciate you going in at the same time, but with Tool you gotta approach it differently. So listen at least once without worrying about the lyrics and just feel it.

You’re not completely off base. He’s also possibly talking about a personal psychological and spiritual evolution and dropping all the trauma and insecurity he’s been hiding in his shadow (his subconscious). It’s a combination of the two. He just doesn’t comment publicly on his past. Most of his lyrics are from his own personal journey from an abusive childhood to the centered person he is today.

Evolving/transforming
The meaning of songs will change over time, as you change. But good on you for diving into the lyrics 🍻
It's about evolving to a more enlightened phase or level of humanity, 46&2 illustrates this evolution with the concept of taking the 46 chromosomes humans have now (we have 44 chromosomes PLUS 2 sex chromosomes to make male or female so it IS 46 total) and adding 2 more to create the next phase of humanitywould make 48 in the new human evolution. And the whole shadow thing echoes Carl Jung's shadow philosophy.

I'll reiterate another commenter. If you listen to Tool, always have headphones. Shit, any music. There are intricacies that you won't catch otherwise
What’s funny is, is you were probably closer to the actual meaning of the song in the beginning. So here’s the thing: all that stuff about chromosomes? It’s part of the song but it’s all bullshit, and I’m pretty sure it’s intentional. Basically maynard is good at bridging distant concepts and infusing them into concise concepts. All of the human evolution and higher being stuff is a metaphor for growing into a better person. It’s metaphors for metaphors, and THATS the fun about Tools lyrics. But that’s just my personal interpretation, you can choose to take them more literally or have a completely different view. It’s all how you experience it.
