I love watching people's amazement/disbelief at how supremely good TooL songs are. The ubiquitous "stink face" as a chorus erupts or a guitar riff begins will NEVER get old. I'm loving following your journey so far! 🤘
@@primateinterfacetechnologi6220 Really? 😂 I never knew they changed the name depending on the region...it was always "Stinkfist" to me here in the States.
It’s very often that I cry while listening to TOOL. Never be ashamed or worry about showing us that emotion. The songs don’t even need to be sad but their musical expression along with Maynard’s writing is EXTREMELY powerful! You’re actually feeling the music and it moves you to be emotional which is a beautiful thing. Keep doing your thing man! 🤘🏻🤘🏻
Appreciate it my friend. Yeah this song hits me hard because there's something scary about integrating the dark parts of yourself. "HOPING I can clear the way." It's a leap of faith and change is scary and uncomfortable. Not many songs have me ready to fight and tear up at the same time but this song manages to do it for me lol.
@Skullz You are by far the best reactor on RUclips. I've watched hundreds of different channels and I'd always find myself eventually disappointed, even if I was initially impressed. You really care about your audience. I appreciate your intellectual lyrical analysis, your obvious passion for music, and your authenticity. I also appreciate your honesty in every reaction. I'll be honest with you - I only watched the tool reactions and haven't checked out your personal songs. With the amount of time, effort, care, and editing that you put into your reactions, I seriously feel guilty about not listening to your music yet lol. I am actually looking forward to it though. I will listen within the next few days and leave you my honest review. I cant thank you enough for your reactions/analysis on the tool songs. You've changed my perspective on the meaning behind certain songs and now my experience when I listen to tool is even better. All the best to you brother.
@shiznitshnitzel4 Damn bro. I don't even know what to say lol. Thank you. I appreciate the kind words. I'm sure I'll have moments where I stumble but I'll always try my best to understand the songs I'm looking at! I'm glad I could help add meaning to some songs for you too. I appreciate you being willing to check out my music. Look forward to hearing what you think. Much love to you bro! 🤘
Agree! 💯 My wife will often catch me and laugh at me. Especially watching reactions. Don't know why but watching someone else experience something exceptional for the 1st time is moving.
I was 25 when I first heard 46 & 2, and it blew me away. But listening to it again at 48 it has so much more meaning. Those years of being the person that I felt like everyone's else wanted me to be are falling away. I'm embracing this person who has been in there all along, but suppressed. It's terrifying and liberating! This is the affect Tool's music and Maynard's lyrics have on those that truly listen. Love your analysis, as always!
I'm having the same experience! I knew TOOL and loved them...but I don't think I ever KNEW TOOL. So much more there...they mean so much more to me now. Going through the discography is the only way to take this mental journey.
my only regret with tool, is I can only listen to each song for the first time once... almost forgot what it was like to be blown away that first time like this. thanks for the react
I see so many people say that, and it makes no sense to me. Every tool song continues to get better and better every time I listen. Thousands of times through, and I still pick up on details and accents that I've missed before.
Welcome to the club, the great thing about Tool is it takes 100's to figure out what Maynard is talking about. Even then you still are not sure. Pure lyrical genius
As always, you're on point. As others mentioned, check out the shadow theory by Carl Jung for insight into 46 & 2. Great job and thank you for your words of wisdom!!
Appreciate it bro! I definitely have to check out Carl Jung. I'm not a great reader (in the capacity of, I'm not great at sitting down for extended periods of time and just reading lol), I'll have to find some audio book potentially because I'm a much better listener 😂
@@Skullzrapper loving watching you go through Tool. Nice work and analysis man It took me years of listening to get close to the deeper meaning of these songs and you are really on point
Again, Justin Chancellor's bassline just drives the instrumental part. That guy is off the chain. But this is one hella complex one to analyze the lyrics of. It constantly refers to Jungian psychological concepts (the shadow) and the theories of Drunvalo Melchizedek regarding spiritual evolution and genetics. So much to chew on. This album is just chock full of psycho-spiritual concepts. Nice one, man. This was also the first song that ever made a single chord struck over and over again sound like the coolest ending of all time to me. Peace! Oh, wait! I'ma remind you about "Blood Into Wine". MJK is such an overachiever. since making that documentary, he's released about six albums, maybe more, he still practices martial arts all the time, and he's written and released an autobiography. The guy's a machine. If following his career doesn't inspire you, (or his career-s rather,) it might just make you feel like a worm. The guy doesn't seem to stop, at all, ever. The rest of them are pretty amazing too. Danny Cary is a drummer who's studied at the feet of masters in percussion from, like, everywhere, as well as a committed magician (like Merlin-style, not David Blaine). Adam Jones designed some of the dinosaurs in the first "Jurassic Park" as well as several props for "Terminator 2" and a bunch of other movies. That was his full-time gig before Tool took off. Justin Chancellor... Well, to be honest, I don't know if he does anything other than write killer basslines all day. And if that's all he does, then nearly every song on every Tool album from this one on and whatever put him in this band makes that more than okay in my view. Right, that's enough of me. Funny you mentioned "Forest Gump". I reckon I'd seen it about fifty times before I was eighteen. Now I really mean it. Over and out.
Been a fan for 19 years now and it cannot be stated enough how much your perspective is appreciated. A new set of eyes help show another’s perspective(s) and this is AWESOME. If I haven’t said before welcome brother. Not many “gets it” like you do. You are in the Tool fan minority’ and thank God for that. Thank you.
Dude I can't tell you how much I'm glad I came across your Tool reactions. It's so interesting to see a fresh new mind interpret and digest what is Tool. As a father of two kids, 3 and 1 years of age, and having a rough childhood myself, I literally choked up with the new light you shed on these lyrics. Keep up the great work man, I look forward to the next one!
@@Skullzrapper Just to help you maybe understand a bit more about Maynard. The song H. isn't about heroin. He's never had a drug problem, nor was he ever abused physically as a child (there's some rumors out there about that as well, mostly due to lyrics on Stinkfist and Sober). You should also check out A Perfect Circle. The songs Judith and Passive are well known to be about his mother, who ended up in a coma before she passed (and who may have been the cause of some emotional abuse/issues). But it's just more really good stuff from Maynard really. Like your reactions though! Earned a sub for sure Oh and another quick explanation of the 46&2 meaning. If you go into the theories of Carl Jung, you'll find that with the possible 46&2 chromosome pairing would supposedly come a sort of hive mind mentality (similar to bees). Where literally every human would be focused on doing what is best for every other human, and the survival and furthering of the human race as a whole (It's a pretty crazy idea to think of really. Like communism at a genetic level). This could easily tie into the thoughts of raising a child to be better than we are that you were mentioning both on H. and here. And could be thought of as a parent now basically living their life only to better their childs. Sorry, your reaction thoughts just seemed so spot on with this, that I had to throw you some info to push it further 😂 Great job man!
The “my child” Maynard is referring to in this song is likely not his actual child (this particular song is very unlikely to be that literal), but his old self. This song is about evolution of the self. Self introspection, changing for the better, and being born in new skin.
Shadow work, the act of radically accepting and loving those pieces about ourselves we were taught to reject, bringing those pieces back to find wholeness. Who knew psychology and spiritual work could drop a beat as good as 46 + 2? My absolute favorite Tool song. Shadow work is the hardest thing we can do but the most rewarding. Nothing is faster or more thorough when shadow work is implemented into a spiritual discipline. The reason why people think Tool’s songs are about having a kid is because having a kid forces us to look at our own lives. And it’s just the best music to clean the house to.
Note: from this point forward, Maynard separates himself from the audience. He will allude to work happening behind the veil (sometimes more direct than others), but he is also going to have fun at the audience's expense. Many will smoke up, take the rides he provides, and fail to realize they never left the loop of useful idiots. He gives guruspeak for consumers and shamanic work for creators.
Dude you really gotta go see them live if you ever get the chance. Tickets are pricey and you gotta be on the button the minute they go on sale because they sell out in less than 10 minutes. But I promise it’ll be worth it. I’ve seen them 3 times and it is by far the best concert and experience ever. Just trust me. You won’t be disappointed.
You are spot on! Maynard went through alot of anger because of what happened to his mother. Before you do the reactions to Wings for Marie and 10,000 Days off of the 10,000 Days album, you will have to listen to Judith by A Perfect Circle in order to understand those songs along with Jimmy off the same album. But you have time! Great reaction! Keep em coming! 🔥
skulz you continue to prove you have to be the best overall Tool reactor/interpreter of all time..lol at least in my opinion..and I have listened to several dozen reactors or more probably.. I wish you continued success in all your endeavors and I know alot of us wish we could do more to keep you on that path..you deserve it..we can sense your love and compassion for life!
Means a lot to me my friend! I'm sure I'll have some songs that I stumble on but regardless I'm having a blast 🤘 I don't have a clear vision for my channel yet and where it's going but I guess we'll see what happens as it grows lol.
Same here. I used to pull up every Tool reaction, but quickly grew tired of the same generic "this is fire" or providing barely any feedback. I'm very selective now and you are at the top of my reaction list because you do a deep dive and provide sincere feedback and opinions. Keep it up!
"Stepping through my shadow" is recognizing the negative, pushed into the subconscious, thoughts and feelings (Jung's "shadow") and using that energy in a positive way. He steps through....not pushing it away, but bringing it along.
Skullz, since I may still have your attention, just be careful latching on to initial interpretations of the lyrics. I realize the nature of your channel. But the ambiguous lyrics reach people differently than possibly the intent of Maynard, so having a personal interpretation is safer than assuming the artist intent. I don’t mean any of that negatively at all. I love that you spend the time to see the lyrics as opposed to others that just bob their head because they see it’s popular on RUclips and they can grow their channel. First reactions are pure, and fantastic, but a majority of Tool’s song need repetition and study to really understand the depth. Spiral out! Enjoy the journey. I hope this music helps you and your listeners as much as it’s helped me over the last 20 years.
I agree 100%! My perspective has massively shifted on some songs! I appreciate the comment! No offense taken at all. I love that most of the Tool army understands that art is meant to be interpreted! The more potential interpretations, the deeper and more timeless the art 🤘
Almost 3 decades later this track still makes the hair stand up. 'Soften this old armor' has always been a stand out lyric for me. I need to remember it more often. Top notch as always, keep em comin!
Dude, I know you’ve been doing a sort of chronological journey with TOOL and it’s been very refreshing to hear someone who really gets IT. I for one think you’re gonna lose your shit when it comes to DESCENDING !!! I’ve been listening to it for 2 years now and I still lose with this EXPERIENCE !!!
Been waiting all week for this reaction!! And as always spot on bro! The opening riff was a riff that Justin played during his audition for Tool. And as you re-listen to this masterpiece, notice how that riff changes slightly over and over until it’s an entire new riff. Very similar to human evolution and change. It’s always small and minute but in the end it’s a huge difference. This in my opinion is there best song so far in your Tool journey. Can’t wait for next weeks, bro!
I'll have to pay more attention to the pattern 💯 It's hard to say what my favorite song is so far. Might be a tie between this and Eulogy right now but knowing me it'll change over time lol.
I learn more watching reactions about songs from new listeners, than I've ever researched on my own. Tool have always been a mysterious band, they definitely are just jamming along to these awesome riffs. Love these guys, fun watching new ears to these songs.
You are on a journey of a lifetime, my friend. You've barely scratched the surface of the spiral... What I wouldn't give to be in your place and hear these songs for the first time... One suggestion, though - when the song ends, don't cut the video, we wanna see your reaction for the ending. Cheers
The first time I ever heard this I was just a young little 💩 and had no idea what it was about. It took me 5 years to get the lyrics and even then I was mostly lost. I love how Tool makes their fans think. Their songs aren't just noise and obnoxiousness... they are cerebral!!
Dude, think how deprived you’ve been for not hearing this till now, my favorite Tool song. Definitely react to “Kid’s Cover Tool 46 and 2” uploaded by O’Keef Music Foundation. It may just be better than the original, for real. A girl sings, she is older now and has her own band called “Saving Escape” and few other kids from the Tool Cover are in her band too.
Bro! Another next level reaction. The “working out” analogy is spot on. And the Manchester Orchestra shout out solidifies your knowledge of transcendent music. Keep it up my man.
Thanks bro! Blows my mind how underrated Manchester Orchestra is! Especially their newest album! I might have to bring them to the channel at some point lol.
@@Skullzrapper I’m glad your back after your loss 🙏🏽 looking forward to seeing more reacts btw I love that your listing to Tool in order of the masterpiece albums …. Are meant to be heard in order and his stories he tells to open minds & heal peoples souls music is life 😉🎶💜see you soon 🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
With how emotional "H" made you, I am glad that this song made you smile so much! I can't wait for your "Hooker with a Penis" reaction next! My absolute favorite Tool song...
Dude, the amount of work you put in to this is making me see Tool in a different light. English is not my primary language and sometimes I don't get what Maynard wants to express with his lyrics.. Your takes are helping a lot. I'm very glad to hear your perspective and doing it in chronological order is actually very interesting.. you are connecting dots that I didn't notice before and they make a lot of sense. I'm already connecting dots for future songs as well, but I won't spoil you anything. Thanks a lot. You are reinforcing the feeling I have for years.. Tool is the greatest band ever for me
I appreciate you not spoiling things for me lol. I'm happy I could help you understand, I'm trying my best to understand myself haha. Much love my friend ❤🙏
Long time Tool fan, I've never been a fan of lyric analysis, I'm more into active listening to the instruments. I've never thought of this album as the way you put it. Gives the album a new life of sorts, not that has ever gotten stale for me. Good stuff man.
technically, although it is usually seen as an intro, useful idiot is actually the outro to h (on the vinyl version of the album, the record noise plays right into the final run out groove). 46 & 2 is the first track on side two. one of the great tunes.
Hey man, I just wanted to say, in sea of reaction channels yours sticks out to me. I appreciate that you take time to actually analyze what you're reacting to. Keep it up
@@Skullzrapper absolutely, music is such an important part of the growing experience for at least myself. When someone respects it the same way I do, I have to make sure to show my appreciation.
Wow dude... If you're going through the whole discography then I'm here for it ✊🏽. Diggin your breakdowns and insights. And some Tool songs can still make me cry if I'm in the right headspace too man ✌🏽
Yeah man, all the way through. I missed Opiate but I'll probably go back to it after their last album. Will be cool to jump back and see how far they came 💯 Appreciate the support bro!
I'm blown away by your ability to pick up on things that most TOOL fans probably don't even realize. I studied psychology in college and it really seems like you have had at least an intro into psych. Your breakdowns are some of the best I've heard from people listening and analyzing TOOL. You're doing a great job, man. I can't wait for you to get to Pushit, Jimmy, Aenema, Third Eye - let alone the other albums that follow!
I appreciate that! No intro to pyschology unfortunately. It definitely is an interest of mine but I didn't realize it in college lol. I took a class in philosophy which was illuminating though. Should be mandatory in my opinion. So should pyschology 💯 We should be learning more about how we work as beings so we can help ourselves and others better.
your words at the end of knowing you didn't deserve to be treated badly was awesome man so i've subscribed. i've been listening to tool all along their carrier and hearing your perspective on the lyrics has helped me see more about this band. but you still have a lot of awesome material ahead.
I can’t believe you only have 16k subs with how awesome your videos are. So many people just make videos to put out content but don’t put a much thought into them like you do. Tool is as good as it gets the last 30+ years.
Hey Skullz, I just found you today and spent my whole afternoon at work watching you react to the first 2 Tool albums. I'm about a year down the Tool Rabbit Hole and you just made that hole a whole lot DEEPER. I have never subscribed to anything on YT before but I now subscribe to you. You do a great job- Keep it up!
I'll be honest, watching you listen to TOOL songs for the 1st time and get emotional, move your head, laugh out loud, talk to the musicians and really understand the lyrics makes me wish I could go back and hear TOOL again for the first time. Now, go see them live🤘
Fear Inoculum is the culmination of all of their work. You can hear elements and specific sounds that were in all of the previous albums in the songs of FI. Adam Jones said in an interview that 7empest was the culmination of his entire life of playing guitar. His magnum opus. I hope Tool releases another album, but I think it ends with Fear Inuculum.
I’m finally caught up on the all your Tool reaction. Hey can’t wait to see the rest, I’m totally here for it, especially the Lateraus album, my favourite album of all time.
Yes, I knew you'd love this one. I'm sure you would have already re-listened to this 10 times by the time I got to watch your reaction 😎 Loved the commentary on self worth at the end of your vid too. A big part of my everyday job (I'm a forklift trainer) is trying to get the best out of people. Inspiring them to want to do something good for themselves. I come across a lot of people that don't think very highly of themselves, that say they are dumb or can't do anything right. It is always worth the time and effort to tell people they are good enough and deserve better for themselves. I appreciate the honesty, bro. Absolutely loving your journey, my favourite thing on RUclips at the moment. Cheers bloke 🙂🍻
I appreciate that and I appreciate that you take the time to build confidence in people. I wish more people in the work force were like that around my area 💯
"The Shadow"as referred to in this song (another brilliant track from they, the four that dare), contrary to being a reference to Maynard's son is often understood to be "The Shadow" or "Shadow Self ", coined by the seminal, renowned psychiatrist Carl Jung 1875-1961. "Shadow - (archetype) the repressed, therefore unknown, aspects of the personality including those often considered to be negative." 46&2 like you said, seems to be a song of acceptance, investigation, exploration, integration, empowerment and transformation. Cheers to a great take on this track. Enjoy seeing you experience the music and offer a considered reaction and interpretation. Keep the good fight brother 🤙✊
it just wont let me hit the like button enough!!! Really enjoying your take on this journey. You definitely get it, and that doesnt happen often. and dont worry, many of us cry during different TOOL songs. They can really reach deep inside like no other band ive ever experienced. Welcome to the TOOL Army!
The end of the song makes me visualize physically breaking through the barrier to our next step as it shatters at the end like a pane of glass. Great reaction! Love the content!
Really enjoying sharing the journey with you. This record & Lateralus were massive records for me personally and it is great getting to relive some of that with yo ur channel. Keep going down that rabbit hole!
As a Jr high/high school band guy and a live sound engineer since 79...you young man have a solid grasp on listening to music...you hear things like I do, from the inside out not how everyone else usually hears a tune.
Your analysis of Tool songs are facinating to me! I’ve seen so many of them, and there are many variations of what different songs could mean. But in doing them all in sequence, like you do, brings forth a hypothesis that to me seems to hit closer to home than any other I’ve seen! You have really inspired me to go the same route, and listen critically to the whole discography in chronological sequence! Thank you for sharing your thoughts on this facinating masterpiece of a band! ❤️
I've always loved this song. It was one of the first tool songs I ever heard, and the first one I learned on bass. Justin Chancellor was a huge influence on me. I loved your reaction and your analysis you pointed out and noted somethings and had a different perspective on this song than I ever did.
Damn, this was the first song you played on the bass? Lol You went straight to the big leagues 😂 And like I always say, what makes these songs so great are the different interpretations they allow. Hope you're doing well my friend 🤘
Going to keep this short..... All I'm gonna say is......... Wait for it.......... I TOLD YA SO ABOUT THIS ALBUM.. Absolutely genius in soooo many levels, lyric wise, crazy timing from Danny, the singing change, same yet different. And you've still got the rest to discover.. Loved the input and reaction as always my friend. 😎👍
What everyone in the comments failed to mention about 46&2. Yes it’s an experience, but allow this to sink in. 42+2, 44+2 and 46+2. In the first paragragh (joinin my - looking for a clue) there are 42 syllables +2. The music notes are I believe the same as well. 42 notes plus 2. By the second “Join in my” 42, 44 and 46+2 have all been met.
Skullz my homie, your Tool journey has been inspirational so far, and I love the perspective you bring to it. I came to Tool late, but from the perspective of the mystic. I think different things stand out depending on our own frame of reference and so sharing your first times with the songs is like getting to discover them all over again and finding something new in an old favorite.
When you watch a movie as a kid; it’s interpreted and taken in as it would correlate to your thinking at the time of your maturity’s. You watch the same movie but as in an adult with a matured way of thinking; taking a better somewhat constructive way; over all comparing that it was shitty back then when it happened but; now, let’s take the better part of that and turn it into something I can learn from; which it in itself becomes a positive perspective; simply in order to relay it in a “it’s not so bad, let’s take this from it” kind of view. It’s like a self repair/redemption of what had hurt and scarred you previously; like you’ve been robbed. Take that same scar, see it from a totally different view and in a sense; get un robbed
Really glad I just found your channel what an amazing breakdown! I just subbed and am going to go back to your beginning to watch your progression with this band, the best band ever! I'm an old school Tool fan and love seeing peoples first experience with Tool as mine was insane and I still remember it like it was yesterday.. It was not! Way back in 1992 I lived in Seattle growing up fully engulfed in the grunge scene, I saw it all! One day a friend got tickets to see Henry Rollins at an all ages show at a place called the OZ. I was not a henry fan but why not. The opening act came out and it was Tool! They blew the fucking house down with around maybe 40 people. It was insane! I bought the EP from Adam when we left and to this day am still blown away from that show and the dozens of shows since. I still have the ticket stub from the 92 show..
interesting take, I'be been waiting to see this reaction.....we are talking about one of the greatest rock/metal drummers if our time.....just starting to emerge, the vocals and driving bass that define Tool also emerging...and the riff......what a riff, but I believe this song is about evolving as a human being, desiring to be next level and doing whatever it takes to get there, based on the theory of Carl Jung, the 46&2 is referencing chromosomes.....when Evolution of man happened (we stood up) it was because of an extra set of chromosomes, we became 44 (auto) and 2 (sex) Chromosomes....his theory is we will pick up 2 more and become 46&2 and THIS will be the next step in evolution
The shadow is in reference to Carl Jung's psychology theory of the shadow self or rather the darker and more destructive and negative aspects of our subconscious and "shadow work" or becoming aware of those aspects and integrating it to ones rue self so as to become a whole person so to speak. The 46 & 2 is the chromosome theory that is used in this song as a metaphor of bettering one self.
The idea of the shadow is all the bad and terrible things we dont consider part of us. But in order to progress, we need to accept that all these bad things are within us, we need to wallow in that in order to step through the shadow and come out a better person, with a better understanding of who we are.
It's easy to look at a murderer and say I'm not that type of person. Or a less extreme example, I would never be an ahole. But of we don't accept we are as human as them, and work on this elements that are deep within all humans, we are only doing a surface level job of working on the individual people we are. This is heavily pulled from Jungian philosophy a day the song becomes a wonderfully deep way to explain how we can mentally evolve. And is a continuation of all the stiff you have picked up on in earlier albums
One of the most influential songs of its day! Absolutely worth emulating by other bands! Tool and their creativity is what music was supposed to be. Their songs tell the story of life as we evolve and mature physically, mentally and spiritually. This is what makes their music timeless and relevant. No matter what age you are there is a Tool fan inside that can relate because we have all either been there or are going there at some point. Great analysis as always!
Your shadow is your subconscious and your ego is persona Aka regular consciousness, he’s talking about clearing out what’s in his subconscious and to stop hiding what’s been hurting him inside like suppressed memories that you didn’t even know that you had, he’s also talking about ego death, which I’ve experienced and it’s helped my life so much in so many ways, killing the ego by stepping through your shadow to gain a whole new spiritual consciousness, that’s where the 46 & 2 comes in 46 chromosomes + 2 to unlock a whole new way of being, there’s a lot more I could unpack here but you should definitely look into it it’s incredible stuff. 🌀
And you got the one line spot on its not about ignoring the negative and evil that’s within you because it’s in all of us there’s a constant duality going on of good and evil inside all of us you have to at the end of the day pick one over the other but it’s being able to accept the evil things you’ve done and be able to get those things out in a healthy way let them co exist in a way integrate the bad with the good as you put it
Remember we all have an inner child too, it's protected by our shadow. A lot of Jung's ideas. 46 and 2 references the chromosomes and genome. Our chimp ancestors had 44... We currently have 46... Adding 2 more... Ascension... Ascending.
If you want to follow the Jungian interpretation, which this song is supposedly inspired by, the Shadow represents the darker, more suppressed parts of your subconscious, a part that you hide away from others because it may negatively effect your relationship with them. To be aware of the Shadow, and to be able to change, is one of the most important parts of evolving. So I like to think this song is all about evolution, changing yourself to become a better person. Very positive message from this song despite the dark sound to it.
Hoping I can clear the way by Stepping through my shadow Coming out the other side Step into the shadow Forty six and two are just ahead of me In analytical psychology, the shadow (also known as ego-dystonic complex, repressed id, shadow aspect, or shadow archetype) is an unconscious aspect of the personality that does not correspond with the ego ideal, leading the ego to resist and project the shadow.
9:30 - Holy shit. Well said. 10:19 - As no doubt others have said, one interpretation of "shadow" is in the Jungian sense, that is all that is currently unacceptable to the persona. “The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.” - Joseph Campbell 11:55 - "I choose to live and to grow Take and give and to move Learn and love and to cry Kill and die and to be Paranoid and to lie Hate and fear and to do What it takes to move through I choose to live and to lie Kill and give and to die Learn and love and to do What it takes to step through" Full acceptance and integration. The Shadow is the unaccepted self, just like the Anima/Animus is the othered opposite (the Anima is for a male the female side of self and matures through phases, the Animus the same but for females with the masculine). One of the core goals is integration. Check out Ken Wilber - No Boundary 14:27 - Check out Drunvalo Melchizedek 17:39 - Spot fucking on.
Love watching first reaction videos, and yours are amazing!! Your interpretation from go blows me away! Then you mentioned Manchester Orchestra, so I had to say something. 💗🌀💗
There is a Carl Jung influence. When Carl wrote his theory they didn't have a full understanding of the chromosome pairs yet. We now know a lot more genetics. In fact other members of the great apes family have 46&2 chromosomes. It's theorized we evolved into a different species when two chromosome pairs in primates fused to form our 2nd chromosome, the largest in our DNA, creating homo sapiens at 44&2.
46&2 are just ahead of those who embrace God with faith in one hand held high, grounded by thy reason. We reach out beyond this flesh and become "pneuma" with all the love of God in thy heart. Through which we mediate all things flow from the heart...☝️👽and the rest will fall into place.
I've been watching Tool reaction videos on and off now to get another perspective after listening to the band for years. Many people so far have looked at H in the way of addiction, taking H as literal street name for heroin and the song being overcoming that addiction. Which in a way it could be. When you're picking up on Maynard's use of child may not be a literal child, but the child that's in us that drives our impulses, desires and indulgence to make it feel ok. I've recently read up on transactional analysis where our personality is made up of Parent, Adult and Child, so I can understand myself while recieving therapy. Listening to these reactions is making more sense to what I've learnt and understanding Maynard some more. The judgemental fearsome snake is more the parent in us and it's through our free adult to reason and learn why our child is so frightened and assure it that it's ok. To do so is to step through the shadows inside us so we can understand why we're so scared of them. This is probably why Tool are so meticulous when it comes to the production of their albums and why each album is a journey by how they're structured.
Just subscribed to your channel. Really insightful. What I love about Tool’s music, is how a song can continue to add or change meaning the more you listen to it. It requires the audience to be engaged, curious, and dig into research on what it means not only to the band, but ourselves. They also have a playful way of giving a title to the songs. Instead of Evolving, how about 46/2. Instead of The Bridge, how about H. Of course Hooker with a Penis has everyone anticipating….well you get it. Not sure if anyone has shared with you that Adam and Tom Morello from Rage were high school buddies in Illinois and played in a band together. One goes into special effects for movies, and the other political science at Harvard I believe. Oddly enough they both end up at Lollapoluza 93 in different bands. Maynard actually tried out for Rage. Since he wasn’t the vibe they were looking for, Tom introduced Maynard to Adam. Lol. Can’t make this shit up.
I love watching people's amazement/disbelief at how supremely good TooL songs are. The ubiquitous "stink face" as a chorus erupts or a guitar riff begins will NEVER get old. I'm loving following your journey so far! 🤘
Same thing with System of a Down reactions. People just look awestruck
or "stank face" depending on ones' local, er... dialect.
peace.
@@loki8645 way.
rock on.
Like that one dude said " everyone is a Tool fan they just don't know it yet" 💯🔥🤘
@@primateinterfacetechnologi6220 Really? 😂 I never knew they changed the name depending on the region...it was always "Stinkfist" to me here in the States.
Tool isn't just mere music...it is therapy and a blueprint (a "tool" if you will) on how to understand ourselves and get through this journey of life.
If you think this album is mind blowing, just wait till you reach Lateralus. The whole album is a masterpiece
Aenima is still my favorite. But so many of their songs are my favorite. It's just Aenima is the one that I love every single song on it.
I still shed a tear or get goose bumps even on the one thousandth listen.
Thank you! I appreciate you insight as well 🙏❤
I'm having the same experience!
Appreciate you watching my friend! 🤘
I see so many people say that, and it makes no sense to me. Every tool song continues to get better and better every time I listen. Thousands of times through, and I still pick up on details and accents that I've missed before.
That's why a lot of us go looking for the reactions of first timers. It's a joy and a treat when it's someone who really gets it and connects.
And it’s almost selfish to me reliving the feeling of listening to the first time vicariously through reactions. I’m all here for it
Welcome to the club, the great thing about Tool is it takes 100's to figure out what Maynard is talking about. Even then you still are not sure. Pure lyrical genius
As always, you're on point. As others mentioned, check out the shadow theory by Carl Jung for insight into 46 & 2. Great job and thank you for your words of wisdom!!
Maynard introduced me to Jung. I am eternally grateful.
Nice work and analysis man
It took me years of listening to get close to the deeper meaning of these songs and you are really on point
@@Skullzrapper lots of great You Tube videos on the subject, Academy of Ideas is a great content provider to start with.
@@Skullzrapper ruclips.net/video/nI-Ko-d29X4/видео.html, here i saved you the trouble lol
Thank you.
Appreciate that! I love hearing everyone else's interpretations as well! Just adds so much value and replayability to them 🔥
My sentiments exactly, well said
Dude I can't tell you how much I'm glad I came across your Tool reactions. It's so interesting to see a fresh new mind interpret and digest what is Tool. As a father of two kids, 3 and 1 years of age, and having a rough childhood myself, I literally choked up with the new light you shed on these lyrics. Keep up the great work man, I look forward to the next one!
So glad you're enjoying the reactions my friend! Appreciate the comment ❤🙏
Earned a sub for sure
Oh and another quick explanation of the 46&2 meaning.
@@Jester_The_Jynxster he said in his Pneuma reaction that he's listened to A Perfect Circle before
The “my child” Maynard is referring to in this song is likely not his actual child (this particular song is very unlikely to be that literal), but his old self. This song is about evolution of the self. Self introspection, changing for the better, and being born in new skin.
Through your "Id" or the "shadow" as Maynard puts it
Loving these whole ÆNIMA reactions, can't wait for 3rd eye but you still have many bangers left before reaching that crucial place. Peace.
Thanks - very helpful. (Trying to figure out shadow work at the moment, Tool is obviously very good for it).
That opening bass line still gives me goosebumps 25 years later.
Enough said! Totally agree.
Same here. I used to pull up every Tool reaction, but quickly grew tired of the same generic "this is fire" or providing barely any feedback. I'm very selective now and you are at the top of my reaction list because you do a deep dive and provide sincere feedback and opinions. Keep it up!
Seriously appreciate that my friend. I try my best 🙏❤
"Stepping through my shadow" is recognizing the negative, pushed into the subconscious, thoughts and feelings (Jung's "shadow") and using that energy in a positive way. He steps through....not pushing it away, but bringing it along.
Hey look, someone gets it. I was wondering if this would get acknowledged or not on here.
One of my favorite Maynard lines as well. Such a simple yet deeply profound arrangement of four words.
I agree! The word "old" just adds so much weight to it 💯
Always moisturize brother!
From all Tool goodness Fear Inoculum is just unbelievable masterpiece. I can’t even e imagine anything better
Skullz you're the best reactor on youtube! Love your TAKE on TOOL. ✌
The baseline changes?
I learn more watching reactions about songs from new listeners, than I've ever researched on my own. Tool have always been a mysterious band, they definitely are just jamming along to these awesome riffs. Love these guys, fun watching new ears to these songs.
You are on a journey of a lifetime, my friend. You've barely scratched the surface of the spiral... What I wouldn't give to be in your place and hear these songs for the first time...
One suggestion, though - when the song ends, don't cut the video, we wanna see your reaction for the ending. Cheers
Keep it up. You’re killing it. I’ve listened to Tool for decades and you’ve elevated it to another level for me.
That's awesome 🤘🔥
The first time I ever heard this I was just a young little 💩 and had no idea what it was about. It took me 5 years to get the lyrics and even then I was mostly lost.
I love how Tool makes their fans think. Their songs aren't just noise and obnoxiousness... they are cerebral!!
Exactly! 💯🤘
Seconded.. The O'Keefe cover is great.. their Sober cover is great too..
Better than this? That's a big statement! Alright, now I'm interested lol
It really is a different piece. I second this the O'Keefe foundation did a WONDERFUL job!
Totally agree … those O’Keefe kids are pure magic 🪄

I've had some time to heal. Appreciate you saying 🙏 I'm looking forward to it too.... even with that title 👀 lol
Keep it up
Gotta respect the art, especially when it's so clear the artists do 💯 Appreciate the kind words.
@@Skullzrapper absolutely, music is such an important part of the growing experience for at least myself. When someone respects it the same way I do, I have to make sure to show my appreciation.
Every time you listen to TOOL, you'll find another reason to listen to TOOL. And it's good . . .
This is probably one of my favourite TOOL songs!
I love to watch you react to Tool!!! I'm so excited!!! Notify me when you get to Fear Inoculum, can't wait!!!
I can’t believe you only have 16k subs with how awesome your videos are. So many people just make videos to put out content but don’t put a much thought into them like you do. Tool is as good as it gets the last 30+ years.
"What is happening?".... Best reaction to Danny's extended fill on my favourite Tool track.

Aenima, 10,000 Days, and Lateralus are the Holy Trinity of albums. Hope to see you go through all of 'em.
I'm working my way through all their albums (LPs) in chronological order right now! So I'll get there 💯🤘
Fear Inoculum is the culmination of all of their work. You can hear elements and specific sounds that were in all of the previous albums in the songs of FI. Adam Jones said in an interview that 7empest was the culmination of his entire life of playing guitar. His magnum opus. I hope Tool releases another album, but I think it ends with Fear Inuculum.
@@jordang7717 Maybe so but that album is garbage and so is Opiate and Undertow lol

Appreciate the support my friend!
"Shadow - (archetype) the repressed, therefore unknown, aspects of the personality including those often considered to be negative."
46&2 like you said, seems to be a song of acceptance, investigation, exploration, integration, empowerment and transformation.

Been a Tool fan for 20 years. Thanks to you I'm starting to understand the deeper meanings of their music.
Much love! I'm glad I could help you get more enjoyment out of them 🤘
Skullz my homie, your Tool journey has been inspirational so far, and I love the perspective you bring to it. I came to Tool late, but from the perspective of the mystic. I think different things stand out depending on our own frame of reference and so sharing your first times with the songs is like getting to discover them all over again and finding something new in an old favorite.
Love that man! It's been a lot of fun 💯
Ohhh weee , can’t wait for the song Pushit!! Definitely my favorite TOOL song

46&2 is truly a masterpiece of a song and your gonna love their next one it may be the angriest track of their whole catalog

Oh I can only imagine! I'd love to see Danny do that live! 🤘
Ok, you earned my subscription. Can’t wait to see what you do with your channel in the future.

It is time, finally. So excited for this one! This is one of my favorite Tool songs.
interesting take, I'be been waiting to see this reaction.....we are talking about one of the greatest rock/metal drummers if our time.....just starting to emerge, the vocals and driving bass that define Tool also emerging...and the riff......what a riff, but I believe this song is about evolving as a human being, desiring to be next level and doing whatever it takes to get there, based on the theory of Carl Jung, the 46&2 is referencing chromosomes.....when Evolution of man happened (we stood up) it was because of an extra set of chromosomes, we became 44 (auto) and 2 (sex) Chromosomes....his theory is we will pick up 2 more and become 46&2 and THIS will be the next step in evolution
Probably also why it was used in the Captain America trailer; Steve Rogers 'evolved' (with the help of military science) into a superhuman.
Appreciate the insight 💯
Tool is one of the most innovative bands... You can listen to them 100 times and hear something else magical!
Can’t wait until Jimmy. That will hit your emotions. Be prepared.
In my opinion the albums just get better and better. Can't wait to take the journey with you!
'Finding your center' - ha Jambi lyrics [also about his son]
One of the most influential songs of its day! Absolutely worth emulating by other bands! Tool and their creativity is what music was supposed to be. Their songs tell the story of life as we evolve and mature physically, mentally and spiritually. This is what makes their music timeless and relevant. No matter what age you are there is a Tool fan inside that can relate because we have all either been there or are going there at some point. Great analysis as always!
I binged every one of your Tool videos now I'm at the end 😔 have to wait like everyone else now
Lol Glad to have you for the journey!Patience is a virtue my friend. I release one every Tuesday! Tool Tuesday! 💯
Shrooms, first time Tool, lost for two hours in a room, four concerts gone, “just a part of me”
Your shadow is your subconscious and your ego is persona Aka regular consciousness, he’s talking about clearing out what’s in his subconscious and to stop hiding what’s been hurting him inside like suppressed memories that you didn’t even know that you had, he’s also talking about ego death, which I’ve experienced and it’s helped my life so much in so many ways, killing the ego by stepping through your shadow to gain a whole new spiritual consciousness, that’s where the 46 & 2 comes in 46 chromosomes + 2 to unlock a whole new way of being, there’s a lot more I could unpack here but you should definitely look into it it’s incredible stuff. 🌀
And you got the one line spot on its not about ignoring the negative and evil that’s within you because it’s in all of us there’s a constant duality going on of good and evil inside all of us you have to at the end of the day pick one over the other but it’s being able to accept the evil things you’ve done and be able to get those things out in a healthy way let them co exist in a way integrate the bad with the good as you put it
super excited bro, gonna love watching you get your mind opened a little wider here :)
I have a feeling their songs are going to get more "challenging" as we go further along 💯
@@Skullzrapper you got the skillz to take the challenge dude ;)
Appreciate the vote of confidence 💯
TOOL IS FOREVER 🤘🔥🖤🔥🤘
Remember we all have an inner child too, it's protected by our shadow. A lot of Jung's ideas. 46 and 2 references the chromosomes and genome. Our chimp ancestors had 44... We currently have 46... Adding 2 more... Ascension... Ascending.
Very soulfull reaction 🙏🌀Thx!
Appreciate it bro! 🤘
Hoping I can clear the way by
Stepping through my shadow
Coming out the other side
Step into the shadow
Forty six and two are just ahead of me
In analytical psychology, the shadow (also known as ego-dystonic complex, repressed id, shadow aspect, or shadow archetype) is an unconscious aspect of the personality that does not correspond with the ego ideal, leading the ego to resist and project the shadow.
9:30 - Holy shit. Well said.
10:19 - As no doubt others have said, one interpretation of "shadow" is in the Jungian sense, that is all that is currently unacceptable to the persona.
“The cave you fear to enter holds the treasure you seek.” - Joseph Campbell
11:55 - "I choose to live and to grow
Take and give and to move
Learn and love and to cry
Kill and die and to be
Paranoid and to lie
Hate and fear and to do
What it takes to move through
I choose to live and to lie
Kill and give and to die
Learn and love and to do
What it takes to step through"
Full acceptance and integration. The Shadow is the unaccepted self, just like the Anima/Animus is the othered opposite (the Anima is for a male the female side of self and matures through phases, the Animus the same but for females with the masculine). One of the core goals is integration.
Check out Ken Wilber - No Boundary
14:27 - Check out Drunvalo Melchizedek
17:39 - Spot fucking on.
Love watching first reaction videos, and yours are amazing!! Your interpretation from go blows me away! Then you mentioned Manchester Orchestra, so I had to say something. 💗🌀💗
Lol Glad you're enjoying them my friend 🤘
There is a Carl Jung influence. When Carl wrote his theory they didn't have a full understanding of the chromosome pairs yet. We now know a lot more genetics. In fact other members of the great apes family have 46&2 chromosomes. It's theorized we evolved into a different species when two chromosome pairs in primates fused to form our 2nd chromosome, the largest in our DNA, creating homo sapiens at 44&2.
Great video man. I appreciate the effort you put into your intention of thought.
Thanks man. Just trying to do the art justice 🤘
That's wild man! 😳 lol Appreciate the comment 💯
