This song became an iconic Australian protest song, paying tribute to the Gurindji people, and becoming symbolic of the broader movement for Indigenous equality and land rights in Australia written by prominent singer songwriters Paul Kelly and Kev Carmody the song tells the story of the Wave Hill Walk off in 1966, through to Prime Minister Gough Whitlam symbolically handing their land back years later peace out.

Yes I used to live out at Kalkarinji as a kid. I remember Gough Whitlam coming to visit us at the annual celebration when he was still alive. Such an awesome experience.
I wish I could say I knew this before. I think the first time I heard this was for the Ethical Super ad, and I thought it was a beautiful song at the time, but I never really explored it. It had a lot more meaning to it than I gave it credit for! Thanks for the enlightenment.

This song was written by Paul Kelly and Murri (Queensland Aboriginal) singer songwriter Kev Carmody. To get a full understanding of the song check out the original, with footage of Vincent Lingiari and his people. It’s a powerful song about a powerful and critical part of Australian history.
Also, good to see Missy Higgins in the mix here. I don’t think you’ve covered her before, so I recommend you check out some of her solo work. An outstanding songwriter and singer.

I read a No of comments here and Im surprised there didnt seem to any/many who told the story of this song. This song is co written by Paul Kelly & Kev Karmody and is based on a VERY famous event in Australian history which took place over a No of yrs from late 1960s into the early 1970s. On a pastoral lease owned by British Lord Vesty the indigenous people whos traditional land the lease was on also worked for Vesty. However the Gurindji people werent treated very well and were working only for rations. Gurindji, lead by Vincent Lingiari walked off the lease and went on strike. The strike lasted for 8 years and the Federal Government became involved and worked out a deal where over 3000 square kilm were returned to Gurindji.
Zaachariaha Fielding, who's the main vocalist for Electric Fields, is singing in his indigenous language in that second verse. I'm not sure the exact language, but he can sing in Pitjantjatjara and Yankunytjatjara, which are both Western Desert languages of the Central Australian First nation people's.
This is written by Paul Kelly, our Bob Dylan, his storytelling is so raw and beautiful.
I’d never heard this version before and I loved it! Singing in First Nation’s language is so powerful considering how integral storytelling is to their legendary culture.

I think he reviewed one of his songs before and didn't vibe it because, I think, the strong Aussie accent in the singing put him off but Kelly is absolutely Australia's best and most prolific song writer.

I like how ziggy has updated it talking about THE DOCTRINE OF DISCOVERY & ABORIGINAL DEATHS IN CUSTODY & how little has changed since the Royal Commission investigation into it. Australia is a great place but with a dark past

When u say the land was given back to the original inhabitants,that only includes the top soil not what's underneath it which is why the big mining companies can come in desecrate the land & do whatever they want. You'd think if the land was returned they'd have more of a say but no. What a con job.

Ok now I've watched I can say I love this version too but to get a real understanding (&full story)maybe u should start with the original by PK. As an indigenous Aussie this song is so powerful & means so much. Paul Kelly has an updated version with ZIGGY RAMO which also talks about The Stolen Generation'. Music isn't just about the "best" voice sometimes it's about "giving a voice". Thanks for the reaction & I hope u get to learn more about Oz & our culture (old & new).

I grew up on the song and made me so proud of my Aboriginal heritage and from a handful of earth big things can grow but we will yarn with you (tell you that story) and just ask that you please listen. My Uncles lived and worked on the cattle stations and they would tell you all different stories around the campfire. Epic song and close to my heart 🙏❤️🇦🇺

Haven't listened yet but love this song in all its different versions. One of the songs that brought aboriginal land rights to the mainstream. Written by Paul Kelly who I k ow you've covered. As I said back then he is a wonderfully gifted storyteller so I hope u pay attention to the lyrics & not just the voices

This was filmed in the Adelaide Botanic Conservatory (in my home town) - it's a big temperature controlled glass green house (looks a bit like a snail lol) in the botanic gardens. Cool place for a music clip 😊

Its an emotional song it was a collaboration during lockdown and is amazing in that even though it is a song (written by Paul Kelly and Kev Carmody) that talks specifically about an event in our history it is universal this song was intended to plant a seed in those that hear it and from that little thing big things can grow. Its a song of hope and very emotional brings tears to my eyes everytime I hear it.

They fought for 8 long years & there was a lot of pushback & suffering. I love the song but find it hard to see the "loving" part but maybe that's just me being cynical (my default mode but trying to work on it)
That tall stranger who travelled to see Vincent Lingari was the Prime Minister Gough Whitlam. As a white mother of Aboriginal children it was an emotional moment for me as well. Gough had the courage to stand with our first nation people and recognise their connection to this great land. It was an amazing moment in our history

This song made me vry and holds great symbolism in Australia. You should look up Vincent Lingiari and what he did and it will give you a new appreciation of the song.
I don't have the capacity to message you any other way but you need to listen to either the original Paul Kelly version or the live version with missy, John and Dan sultan, it will provide you with the back story. Truly and Australian master piece that sums up one of the best inspirational Australian stories.
Black Arm Band do an incredible version also. The Murundak album is amazing. Saw them live at Womadelaide. OMFG!!! Huge screens at either side of the stage playing the old Movietone News clips of Vincent Lingyari, Lord Vestey and Gough Whitlam, plus the line-up of talent was incredible. Truly a "Supergroup."

It's also very hard to talk about Treaty when there is a large school of thought that focusses on the fact that Sovereignty has never been ceded, which is not popular, by and large among the current ruling class. About 20 years ago there were big meetings being held in Canberra regarding the idea of a treaty, and the ABC were recording live to air, so I was glued to the radio. One of the Yawuru Elders spoke, saying "Well, I can see all you whitefellas in the crowd there, and I just know that you're thinking, well, if we do thus and so and so, what's in it for our children? And it's a very good question, and I'm here to tell you, that if you do thus and so and so, then your children and theirs, get to become Aboriginal." And the whole room erupted in applause. We mustn't give up hope, mate.

Rather than a protest song it is the song of a victory by the oppressed Indigenous stock workers in the Northern Territory who were able to get land taken from them by white settlement. An important first step in the indigenous struggle
I just looked it up, electric fields is the name of the band, the singer's name is Zaachariaha Fielding.
Its about a long court battle to obtain Aboriginal land rights that resulted in victory for The first nations people

I respect the work that went into this cover version and Imagine Paul and Kev wouldn't have minded one bit. For me though all the atmospheric extra of the arrangement and the perhaps a little stilted vocal delivery detract ever so slightly. The original is brilliant in it's simplicity which I think only serves to reinforce the powerful message.
Side note, it pisses me off hugely that this song is now used to promote superannuation.
