Hey, thanks for showing that tite-reach tool. I just ordered the 3/8th size for my little brother for his birthday. In 1971 that engine had 145 hp and 215 lbs of torque from the factory. The 4 barrel carburetor and header dual exhaust should bump up that number quite a bit.
Love it and show!!! Wish I had it and the same dover parts fir my 65 valiant convertible. Please never get under any car that's on jack stands supported on a gravel driveway. I wrote pretty much a full article on another comment above and it hasn't seemed to work too let them know about this Mopar Trans. And the incredibly important linkage that is on the Trans valve body that controls the pressures and the shifting points to work properly and not burn the clutches and drum liners in a very fast way. Even if you're in first with the shifter it's going to only get the idling pressure and not really hold the clutches tightly for very long and it creates a lot of extra heat in the fluid. I hope that they put a piece of linkage or something like a TV cable on a gm Trans and it literally will act like a totally different car!
@@BudgetBuildz guys I'm not good with this comment thing. But that A904 Auto Trans has a very important lever for telling the Trans how much throttle it is seeing and it literally will adjust the entire pressure for holding the clutch pack more tightly and it also tells the Trans when to make shifts at the correct speed and the kick down is also done with the same lever and it makes the valve body work in a entire different way and it will make a massive difference in power delivery and can use the torque converter to create a much more torque and way more power when it is not fighting the entire parasitic loss from it literally only seeing a idle amount of holding pressure and it makes everything work twice as hard with no torque multiplication and the sun gear and planetary gear will not work correctly. This will wake it way up! Good luck. And it literally needs a four barrel that is a more adjustable across from front to back so the end cylinders doesn't run as lean. BP
Really interesting tools for tight spaces, I only do drum brakes now and again, but I need those tools, having a spring shoot across the garage, this is not nice! its a very interesting project, it really needs a manual, or at least a harder shifting auto and a way shorter final, would like to see the potential of that Straight 6 (neat to see the exhaust note change so much after valves\timing advance)
Good job guys! My sister had one of these in the mid 70’s bright red with the slant six. Had a cool factory black out stripe kit on it, and the back quarters said twister with a 🌪️ on it! Lol
Yep, I did a road trip from Denver to St. Louis and back one weekend back in 1970 in my friend;'s Duster. Cool car. Looking forward to the next video, 'specially your RV!
get the kickdown rod to work and loosen up the rear brakes and give it some timing. the kickdown rod is for throttle pressure. without it you will kill that 904.
You watch one slant six video and up pops suggestions for others.... and so my brain (74) kicked in and remembered a slant six duster I had since new and then parked when money improved. I had probably more snow machines than anyone should ever own.... hence a slide draft carburetor set up in the making.... I put one on every cylinder and it would lift the tires off of the ground for about twenty feet. The weak point was a three on the column shift... scattered every transmission that I put behind it. I adapted a M22 from a chevy and it held till it blew up after a ton of races and just ran out of oil. A outfit in Minnesota builds superchargers for these and they make over six hundred horse power. Its a all custom setup but can you have more fun in clothes than that
So I cut my teeth on Slants back in the day. Ran E/Gas in a 64 Valiant in the later 60's. In order to get a Slant to really run you need to do machine work. Bore to the sonic limit. 0.080" to 0.100" off the deck. As much as your machinist will go off the head. After market push rods to fit. Hand porting for bowl and runner shape and flow. Try to get more swirl into the incoming charge. Cam and a lot more advance. We did not weld the weights, but re-contoured them to swing more and add mechanical advance onto 10* initial. All in by 2,400. Gotta have some heat under the plenum as the long runners loose heat and you don't get enough vaporization. Then you can start tuning. The motor will wind to 5,500 easy enough and you use the Six's native torque to help. 4:10 gears and even the three speed floor shifted tranny will do nicely. Red-Line MTL in the tranny now days. Back then ATF in the tranny and rear gear to reduce drag. Lot's of spring clamps on the front half of the rear springs and it'll launch OK. Pinion snubber maybe. Air shock on the right rear to adjust the L-R balance on leave 😁 Your competition was 240 Fords in Falcons, and Chevy's 230 Six. As the 60's wore on, a few 250 Chevy Six's showed up. They had the 225 Slant covered ... 🙄
What a great little car, I had a 1963 Dodge Dart convertible (as in the photo) in 1971 and that had the 225 slant six motor, with the push button gears, I loved that car but unfortunately it was quite rusty, I remade the door tops from sheet ally, as they had rusted away, and repainted it, plus I put a sidewinder exhaust on it, as was the fashion of the day, and had the accessory feet for the throttle and dipper switch but unfortunately old yankee cars have gone through the roof here in the UK, can't get one for a couple hundred quid now 🥲 Luv watching you and your dad working on these vehicles, keep it going 👍
I love your channel, and I'm not a car guy , at all ! I like the way you do budget. I also love that it's a family channel, and you never promote stuff, as far as I've seen. You guys are keeping recovery and restoration within a regular guys dreams !! My buddy in high school had a Duster, not that fast, but he had it decked out like it was, LOL !
There are not a lot of options on the 5x4 bolt pattern. My 68 Valiant has them as well. The BVD bolt pattern (Baracuda/Valiant/Dart). A-body only. Looks like a 7-1/4 rear-end. The larger 8-3/4 would have a drop out center section. Loving the MOPAR content!!! Thank you!!
Greetings from Atlanta! As someone who drove my fair share of slant six mopars in the 90's, I'm really excited about this build. I'm starting work on a '68 Valiant 2 door 318/4 speed now. Keep up the great content!
You need to hook up the throttle pressure linkage for the trans to work right. Assuming the trans is ok adjust that right and put in a shift kit. The rear end is a 7.25. A stock slant six can tear that out without a problem. Look for a A body 8.25 with at least 3.21 gears or better. That also gives you a 5 on 4.5 wheel bolt pattern. Love the channel.
Love Dusters/Darts/Demons/Valiants. Owned a few of them and wish I still had one of them again! slant 6 or 318 were all low compression engines and run the same unless you do some parts replacing. That burnt orange is my favorite color on any car!
Plz make a video with the Fiat 124 Spider that appears in the background. I’m from Brazil, and during my years studying in California,I had a 1974 Fiat 124 Spider. Good memories. Greetings from Brazil
I haven't watched the entire video yet, but that 225 sounds awesome. It's DEFINITELY got an aftermarket cam, headers, an Offenhauser intake, a Carter AFB Competition 4bbl carb, and some slight ignition mods (at least a coil and wires). It could be a little fun, but I know that it would leave me wanting more...especially with that automatic trans...but it definitely sounds good (exhaust wise) for a 225!
I’d check the kick down cable, if that’s not right it won’t run right or shift right. You can burn up a transmission pretty quickly, but the gears are definitely hurting it performance wise. Keep up the great work guys.
I was going to say the same!, Lots of folks don't know that's not just a kick down but also controls the throttle valve in the Trans that controls the shift points!, It will be in 3rd gear in 20ft without it hooked up and will smoke the Trans!!
Nice upgrade with the brake tools. Now it's time to give your drill press a break and get a bench grinder with a wire wheel to clean parts. Boy, you weren't kidding about the ineffective pressure wash. Never seen one do such a lousy job removing dirt from a car body. Magic Erasers to the rescue! Commendable comprehensive brake job, gentlemen.
I’m not a motor guy at all. Great family, nothing fancy, Cars with mojo. Decent editing and your camera skills are just right for us. You guys deserve higher views.
It's because So few have the interest or attention span to actually watch and appreciate, they'd rather watch morons like Whistlin diesel destroy stuff, I hope that answers your question.
In High school(the 80's) I had a 1971, hemi orange 340, 4 speed duster. Kept that car for 10 years. Loved it, miss it now. Best of luck with the project.
If the rear end is not bad, just growling a bit, you can it down with old fashion "STP" it won't help, you still need to replace it or rebuild it later on. The "STP" will quiet things a bit. Good Luck.
Watching you wash that Duster reminded me of Married with Children when they lost AL Bundys Duster. Except it was that it was so dirty he forgot it was actually red.
1st 3 cars were Slant Sixes, one bare bones with 3 spd floor shift, rubber mat floors. Plymouth made a "Fleather Duster", lighter weight, increasing mpg.
i've been super passionate like you with antique bicycles back in the days, it rejoyce me seeing your passion. Following since the ep 1 of the porsche. Wish your channel will get big and you will able to this full time. Greets from Berlin bro :)
How do we get ahold of these guys when it's really important that they need to know about the Mopar A904 Transmission has a level to control the line pressure and the shifting points and it literally will just eat it in a incredibly short time. I can't believe that it was so apparent that the converter was just blowing right through the flash point and it gets incredibly hot in just a few minutes of it shifting from 1st to 3rd in 75 feet. But even when you manual put it in the number 1 location/First gear it's still on the idling pressure of the valve body! And I was also very surprised by how little oil was in the valve train station area where it is normally spraying around a lot more from the center feed tube ? I seriously think that was a very fresh build and it literally was not ever broken in or even possibly ever started? I just don't know how to get ahold of them before it's too late and ruined. I built a few of those and I used a lot different carburetor (Holly 500/600/650/700 on a supercharged one.the edelbrock is a very good bolt on most engines and runs. The slanty is very easy to get the longer port's of the intake runner's that can go to a very lean situation where it is more than just regular driving. But a Holly is more capable of being adjusted more like a single port for each 2 sets of runner's and sometimes you can use a couple different heat stages lower in the farthest cylinders and literally is a ton of lost information on these engines. But they are wicked good in the lower Rpms for torque and power and depending upon which one that engine came from it is very possibility to have a early Forged rotating assembly in the bottom end and it might have a newer version head for the adjustable valve train and more flow etc. I just wish I had a good way about how to tell them what to look for and make sure that they have the oil pump engaged and not just a very limited amount of pressure?
Your new coil support solution is century ahead then factury one . Better ? Put a piece of non metal between coil and the metal . 7/16 or 10 mm thick should be fine . Maybe bigger zip tie
Looking forward to this particular project 😀 ❤ Slant 6 , manual 4 wheel drum brakes Great job on those Steel lines Thank you for keeping this car , stock and original
I really love the GMC motorhome but I really like the Duster. The Torqueflite transmission was a pretty good transmission overall. Check the transmission filter ASAP as over the years I have found that it can cause a lot of problems. It's a real fine filter and will plug up easily. Worked at a garage and when people thought their transmission was bad we just replaced the filter and slippage stopped. They thought we were awesome. You could also shift kit it and kind of manual sift when you wanted. Please don't put an 01 on the door. :-) So glad you got the brake tools. Always made me cringe when you did brakes also. Go get em!!
sounds good, looks good, too... but the idle seems a bit rough. there might be a vacuum leak left. otherwise, as others said. aside that, maybe you still should swap those ignition wires. I had some that would leak occasional sparks inside the plug connection. sometimes when I wanted to idle up the engine stalled instead, because there were too many sparks missing in that very moment... I love how you make no compromises with the brakes. :) that is the way! nice orange. I love the signal colours from the 70's; today every car is dull grey or blue or silver or whatever non-colour, we need refreshing spots of colour in our lives. my own 1974 Ford Taunus is painted in Sebring red, which is also more orange than red. but it kind of glows. :)
You might enjoy the video hyperpack recently posted on his channel of his 69 Dart Swinger 225 4 barrel 4 speed. Motor very similar to yours and he has done the 4-speed conversion.
My mom had a Gold Duster back in the day. Had the slant. Never got to drive that one. Think it was t-boned in a parking lot. Pops sold it soon after. I did have a 77 Aspen in school, and bought another Duster both 6 slant. I’d buy another if I could find a good one.
On mine, I have a 3.55 Sure-Grip and a Ford T5 transmission. I don't know for sure, but I would like to believe my slant is 250hp. One thing that may be holding you back, beyond the fact you didn't hook up the transmission to the throttle, is that carb may be too big. The slant is a small engine; 500cfm is a lot for it to try and breathe in, and what is probably a 600cfm on it is even worse. I'm running a 390cfm 4bbl on mine, and it is perfect. If you're going to keep the auto in it, if it's not burned up already, you have to hook it up and the best way is the Lokar cable. It is not a kickdown, it is a throttle valve like on a GM 700R4. If you're thinking manual, 4 speeds are okay, but gearing isn't the greatest behind an engine with a 2000-4000rpm power band. Although a lot of cutting is required, it's not that much more difficult or costly to put a T5 in that car.
Mine was a 74 Green on Green had power steering but manual brakes. Only car I ever did front drum brakes on. So easy to service. Still have drums on the rear of my 90 Mustang they seize up but get free easily. Cylinders were $12 each I still have them to go on but the old stuff still working. Less is more in so many ways.
Slant-six may mot be the biggest powerhouse, but it has the advantage of being almost impossible to kill. Back it up with the right transmission and rear end, it'll be fine.
The slant 6 is a bulletproof Stroker motor but I wanted to let you know you can still get that original material put back in that car I would love to see the interior done back to original
Oh yeah and if you only want to do part of the original material they can still find it in the books and a good upholstery Warehouse can order it it is out there
I ve had a 1977 volare fast back, a 1976 Aspen 4 dr sedan, a 1977 Aspen 4 dr, and a 1976 Voare wagon, all wqith slant 6 motors. My last one i had was the 76 Aspen sedan, i bought for $525 in Seattel in 2001. I finally retired it to a wrecking yard in March 2020, after the third used tranny went out. The body and under was badly rusted, as i had it in the midwest since 2010. The second motor still ran good though. It hurt so much to say goodbye to it.
H Hi, I have a 1974 dart c ustom that I put an Aussie speed hurricane intake, and a Edelbrock 1901 4bbl, i did some porting/ relieving on the head. It runs pretty good ,ocasionally I can get a really good 1 wheel burnout. I am glad to see you are keeping the slant 6. There are companies out there that make all kinds of adapter plates for a veriety of transmissions.
Thoroughly enjoying the build on the 71' Duster!!! You've got it running and driving just about to it's factory potential. Without upgrading the trans or rear-end she won't be a whole lot faster. When I got my license driving my mom's Duster in 74', the 6 wasn't blinding me with power. Yours definitely deserves to be brought back to her formal glory. I will follow this build as well as the big GMC Motorhome.
Great job well done thanks 😊

Air shock on the right rear to adjust the L-R balance on leave 😁
Your competition was 240 Fords in Falcons, and Chevy's 230 Six.
Great job guy’s! I think is gonna look great once you guy’s dialed it in! Maybe a 4 speed manual!!👌😎👍
Sounds good actually. Just needed a little lovin. Can i get a amen for a flat black hood and tail treatment!?! 🚗
I always look forward to your videos and that you stay true to doing it on a budget. Amazing what you two can do. Thanks for the video.
That is so happy to be alive again, do a manual conversion, its a keeper.
That clean up better than I thought it would. This is a fun little car and I am glad you guys are saving it.
Thank you!!
It would be cool to see a 4 spd manual in the Duster...fun little cars!
They do make drum pullers. Super handy.
Always loved pretty much the majority of the old 60s & 70s Mopars. Thanks for another great video guys and I hope your beach trip was a fun time! 💙👊🏼
Another way to find the rear end gear ratio is to pull the inspection cover off the rear end. The ratio is stamped on the ring gear.
I'm definitely a fan of the Duster. Would I drive it? With a refreshed interior yes.
Greetings from Atlanta! As someone who drove my fair share of slant six mopars in the 90's, I'm really excited about this build. I'm starting work on a '68 Valiant 2 door 318/4 speed now. Keep up the great content!
westport wa.state here thank you for the shoulder peek.
that car is way to good to have left for dead. glad you did what you did sir's
That Duster needs a 3.73 rear gear and a 4 spd or an automatic Trans Go shift kit. Good job budget builders!🤠✌
Oh yeah...when pops rolled off....that's cool....and the tornado sticker on the sides and tail....great cruiser.....
For a leaning tower of power, it sounds like a big block with a cam in it from behind at idle. Great job guys
It is a cool car. It needs a little more love, then she will behave. Thank you for sharing.
Great video, amazing work on those brakes, love your videos, love from the UK 👌👍😀
Ive never had drum brake tools either and im 39, only just bought them recently and what a difference!
Love the headers on that thing.
Need to hook up the kick down linkage on that thing! You'll burn that trans up fast without it. Sweet car guys. I'm jealous!
Amazing to me how solid a car it is. My 75 duster rusted all to hell after a year and it was rust proofed.
I am a motorhead and yeah their camera angles are good but not great all the time. Im still a huge fan. Mostly from the rabbits.
I had a Dodge Demon 340. Loved that car. Fun to drive lots of power.
Adjust the valves while running. It’s kinda bouncy but can be done and way quicker. Made a world of a difference on my old Slant
An old friend had a 74 Dart Sport with the same engine mods but a 4 speed & it was pretty fast.
Good Luck.
I had a 1975 duster with the slant 6, one of the best motors ever made.I believe the motor made 145 horsepower and was a fun car to drive.
Great video guys… those black steelie wheels would look great repainted… respectful suggestion and keeps it budget 😉
I've always loved dusters. Especially the 340 versions.
cam, shift kit higher ratio rear and a straight pipe. love it as is too.
The orange paint is giving me a Dukes of Hazzard vibe. Might need some Nascar style wheels and some numbers on the side.
Slant 6's are definitely a powerhouse, but they sure are indestructable. Had a 1973 Dart Swinger when I was a kid. Ran forever and outlasted the Dart!
Sorry... I meant to say that the Slant 6 was NOT a powerhouse, and I mis-typed!
Great to see in detail how you fix things. Great video.
Your new coil support solution is century ahead then factury one . Better ? Put a piece of non metal between coil and the metal . 7/16 or 10 mm thick should be fine . Maybe bigger zip tie
Looking forward to this particular project 😀 ❤
Slant 6 , manual
4 wheel drum brakes
Great job on those
Steel lines
Thank you for keeping this car , stock and original
When you were reving it I’m thinking that is going to go like hell
And leave some good one wheel peels 😂😂
Good one Michael
I really love the GMC motorhome but I really like the Duster. The Torqueflite transmission was a pretty good transmission overall. Check the transmission filter ASAP as over the years I have found that it can cause a lot of problems. It's a real fine filter and will plug up easily. Worked at a garage and when people thought their transmission was bad we just replaced the filter and slippage stopped. They thought we were awesome. You could also shift kit it and kind of manual sift when you wanted. Please don't put an 01 on the door. :-) So glad you got the brake tools. Always made me cringe when you did brakes also. Go get em!!
Glad to see you getting sponsored, good to see the channel growing. You guys deserve it. Will there be a Porsche update soon?
sounds good, looks good, too... but the idle seems a bit rough. there might be a vacuum leak left. otherwise, as others said.
aside that, maybe you still should swap those ignition wires.
It´s very nice that these sixes don´t get too much attention so they can still be found for cheap or even for free. It sounds nice, be kind to it.
Oh yeah and if you only want to do part of the original material they can still find it in the books and a good upholstery Warehouse can order it it is out there
Awesome plymouth duster slant six motor in it
Turbo slant 6 would be so cool
Love those old dustersl
I ve had a 1977 volare fast back, a 1976 Aspen 4 dr sedan, a 1977 Aspen 4 dr, and a 1976 Voare wagon, all wqith slant 6 motors. My last one i had was the 76 Aspen sedan, i bought for $525 in Seattel in 2001. I finally retired it to a wrecking yard in March 2020, after the third used tranny went out. The body and under was badly rusted, as i had it in the midwest since 2010. The second motor still ran good though. It hurt so much to say goodbye to it.
My Aunt drove hers from LA to Indianapolis to visit. Hers was a 1975. Fuscia color with black accents.
Just brilliant video😊
Love everything you two do.
Brake tools are great but sometimes a regular flathead screwdriver is the only thing that works. Vice Grips come in handy.
AMAZING!
Awesome video keep up the good work. Hope to see yall at power tour!
