I never post on RUclips. I really like your take on must albums to own. Instead of buying X album, get albums that are personal to you which vinyl is. Stopped by a local brewery last night where a friend of mine bartends. he Is the former band member of a local band that broke up recently. Started talking about my new fascination with vinyl. He happened to have a copy of his newest and what he considers his best work. I bought it and got it signed. Now I have a signed copy of an album from a good friend. That would've never happen if I hadn't watched your video yesterday afternoon. great work. thanks

WOW! This makes me feel so good. I am so honored to be included, even so subtly, in your purchase and reasoning; the fact that you came back to post this after really makes me smile too. Thanks for tuning in, I hope your vinyl collecting days continue with success. Stay connected on the channel and don't be a stranger :)

I love the part when you take out Pink Floyd's Dark Side of the Moon. Yes, it is a must. (And I especially love that you don't even mention the title or artist and tell people to just Google it!) And you are absolutely right. It really does go without saying!

I don't think I will ever be able to get an album signed. Many of the artists I listen to are either really famous in their genre, or they're dead.

My only significant signed album is actually signed by the painter who did the cover, not the musician. It's Tuomas Holopainen's "The Life and Times of Scrooge", signed by the world-famous Scrooge McDuck artist Don Rosa (and Holopainen, but that's not significant).

Picture discs look cool, but in terms of audio quality, standard black is the way to go. When I buy vinyl, it has one main purpose, to play it on my turntable, not to have some showcase piece for casuals to look at.

I didn't agree with a single thing you said (except keeping your first record), but I loved it all. Nice, tongue in cheek stuff. Better than most of the pseudo-informative know nothings talking endlessly about their bad taste in music, or going on an on about their "huge" 100 or 200 album collections.

I got my first beatles cd in the ealy 90s-help. after that I got sgt pepper, Abbey road, the one With the white sleeve and that was it. The only one I liked to a degree that I would play it was Abbey road. 25 years or so passed. I gave sgt pepper a New shot and loved it. Now I have most of their albums. I love revolver, sgt pepper and the first 2 albums the most. I got the remix sgt pepper along With my swedish pressed 1967 Version. Both sound amazing. The ones I have on vinyl are pepper, live records and revolver. Putting on revolver is great. Taxman.

Not found anyone (my apologies to them as have never gone with "Top 10" must have vinyls kind of things) with this kind of "list" - its lovely to see that your rather provided better direction/thought on having a sort of "top 10" - we all should try to build who are into vinyls esp. who are new or having a small collection. I too have taken note of it; a few points were in my mind but your video now enticed me to have those points (the vinyls) covered by me in near future.
Yes, one more vinyl should be there to showcase audiophile or sonic beauty of a vinyl - how rich and good a vinyl could sound. (though we may put it under the category no.3 mentioned by you).
    Thanks & Regards,

First record I ever bought was Unknown Pleasures. The second was Talking Heads ‘77. Now, when I first started playing bass guitar I thought I should be sensible and learn scales, chords etc before songs (I never played guitar so I was starting from nothing) and to be honest, it was very boring. I was regretting spending the money on an instrument that I wasn’t good at and didn’t really enjoy- then I listened to Psycho Killer and that was the first song I learned on bass. Then I conquered that whole album and moved onto Unknown Pleasures, and I guess it was all very lucky that I got into records when I did or I might not have ever found my passion. I mean sure I would’ve streamed the music at some point but buying and physically owning those albums (possibly the best for the bass guitar - every song has a great bassline and mostly very easy) made me feel this obligation to play them, and the more I listened the more I connected with the awesome sounds of Peter Hook and Tina Weymouth and I wanted to replicate it so bad I really got into playing the instrument.
The third album I bought was 2112. I have now played bass every day since I bought that record without missing a single day.

I met Ray Manzarek during his beat poetry tour with Michael McClure a few years back. He stuck around after the show to sign his book which was just out at the time, and he made an announcement at the beginning of the show that he would sign no other article, just the book. You better believe there were tens and tens of people lining up, all with their books, at the end of the show. And then the very last person in line was me. I had a pristine copy of the "American Prayer" album by Jim Morrison and the Doors. He graciously signed it and that was all she wrote for him that evening :)

    Broheim,
Really enjoyed the list and your take on what ahould matter to us... I'm going to pull my top-ten from my current collection. That way I'll be able to see how I really feel about those choices? These albums should be as mint as possible (AMAP) so come time to spin there will be zero glitches in immediate gratification. I like the soundtrack angle. A dream list is another way to be determined to find those tracks absent from one's collection. Glad to have found your channel. Will continue to check-in and keep you updated. (Whipped Cream and Other Delights) is every young male American's favorite cover. Because we all know Herb Alpert literally sold so many records finding a mint copy of any of his work is a beautiful thing...! I'm a musican and the cats that played on Tijuana Brass records were the cream of the crop. great call-- peace Jimi

Next thing I know I filled the record case under my stereo. I bought and bought, I filled a 100 lp case. Then another and so on. I learned, I listened, I looked for stuff. There are no directions. I never knew there were "guidelines for that I should attain in my collection."

Hey dude🙂🖖 that was fun listening to your take on a top 10. More a philosophy really! Anyway I always loved music and I still have more records than anyone I know....about 500 or so. My big regret was when CDs came out and I started duplicating my favourites I actually gave away about 8 or so to my friends.....which as you may imagine I really regret now😥 The 2 I miss owning the most are Wish you were here ( my favourite Pink Floyd album ) and Equinox. Of course I still have them on CD, got about 2000 of them🙂
Happy find today though, I got a blue vinyl Sting album, yes, Dream of the Blue Turtles, $3 though it's missing the actual cover. Looks cool though! For me at the moment, as much as I'd like to buy more records, cash flow is my main issue, so Op Shops and garage sales is it for now. My little collection I began for fun last year is politically incorrect covers, like the cream lady cover. Anyway, nice chatting at you, I'm off to put on my Hi Fidelity album and get a glass of red.
Hey one question for you? I have a live double Tangerine Dream album. Side 1 and 3 are what they're supposed to be, the other sides are someone unknown to me.....but also live?? Any thoughts? Thanks🙂🖖

"High Fidelity"... nice! I like the way you did this. I'd still buy "The Wall" before the one you would not name, but that's me. The one specific everyone should own, AC/DC "Back in Black", it should, by law, come with every turntable sold.

  • @sundemon1156

Great video. That last bit was soul-stirring of Sam Cooke proportions. Growing up in the Golden Age of Vinyl it would have been impossible for me to keep my first record as I was always buying, selling, and swapping just to keep the music flowing and as a kid, I was always broke anyway... so a lot of great music passed through my life. However, now I am attempting to buy back virtually all of my records... well, the memorable ones anyway. Thank God for Sundazed and their Shadows Of Knight/Byrds reissues.
But hey, you forgot the obligatory "comedy" album. I don't mean some tired stand-up record by Steve Martin or Robin Williams that grows stale after the third or fourth listen. I'm talking about National Lampoon's "Lemmings" (a p!sstake on Woodstock) or anything by The Firesign Theater. One of those early Rhino compilations (Rhino Royale or Rhino Circus) when their old, independent store in West Hollywood was run by some seriously demented characters. Stuff that is funny and can be listened to over and over again, like Bobby 'Boris' Pickett's "Monster Mash" album or some of that old Spike Jones stuff. The Rutles, Spinal Tap... turn that Top 10 up to 11, man.. Throw in a few vinyl 'yucks'.... just a thought.

I liked this video and I thought it was spot on. I think the only thing you missed is a Jazz lp, even over a blues lp. That jazz lp should be Miles Davis - Kind of Blue | oddly enough I used to own that Herb Albert record but I must have left it behind in a move. I had no idea it was a thing with vinyl collectors because of how common it is (I suppose), but now I never see it. I guess I need to stop by goodwill a few more times to find it.

  • @PaulBude

I have another one: Own the record you almost got rid of. I did that mistake once; I got me a better copy of a record i loved and sold my first copy on the fleamarket. Bad choice. I had to realize i was so used to the soundcarpet (cracks, side-noises) my first copy had, that i missed them on the much better copy. I don`t listen to that album any more and i miss that first copy i had a lot. So be careful when deciding to sort out records.

    • @DailyVinyl
      @DailyVinyl  6 лет назад +1

paul bude that’s a mistake I’ve made too! Even with records that I️ didn’t have duplicates of, simply getting rid of something only to realize later I️ shouldn’t have...totally random, did that with Micheal Martin Murphy, sold it for like a buck at a record fair only to strangely become obsessed with “Wildfire” like a week later and have to go seek the LP all over again ha

Wow. This is the best "must own records" video. People taste is different so there's no point saying you must own this or that record. Make your collection personal. Beatles or Floyd are must own from historical point of view (and great music btw), deep down I think everyone loves classical music. Rest as you've said. Your favourite album, first album etc. Very well thought of list and entertaining video. Thanks!

@@DailyVinyl your welcome. Just got back into vinyl. Remember as a child listening to records at my uncles place. My first experience with "real" music was on vinyl, Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Iron Maiden, The Beatles etc. Then came cassetes and CDs. Always been sad that records gone away, now with resurgence of vinyl i feel like music has meaning again. When I played my first new record since early 90's it actually made me cry 😂. By far the best way to enjoy music!

  • @gregmcdonald8962

"...... I'm sorry you had a bad childhood and your parents didn't teach you that." That genuinely made me laugh out loud! It's not my favorite Floyd album but I get your point. I also love everything you said about Waylon and now I NEED that picture disc... Even though I generally hate picture discs.
    😄

Interesting perspective. I couldn’t possibly have a top ten records, because there is too much stuff from the 60’s and 70’s that I like. I have hundreds of records, some I even have doubles. Always try to get originals. Bottom line, get stuff you like and put plastic wrapping on each of them. I also see record collecting as a hobby too.

Been in the vinyl game for a few years now and definitely liked the list man. For sure a rad take on broadening it and not saying you need to buy X, Y and Z. Checked off every box except for classical and now that's for sure gonna be taken care of on my weekly trip to Zia. Show piece is a still sealed original Def Jams pressing of Slayer's Reign in Blood. I'm in AZ too, favorite place to dig is Double Nickels in Tempe

Justin S double nickels is very cool, the remains of what were several other ships back in the day. Do you ever go to the rare az swaps? Late to the viewing - but so glad I did (honestly this video came up on the 'auto play next' - glad I watched). Bro, I enjoyed this, thank you. Your presentation of the Pink Floyd LP was simply perfect. hahaha As others have noted, this video was overall well put / done. I love your list because it's conceptual and somewhat subjective, allowing for the individuals tastes and experiences.
Except for Dark Side of the Moon.. and I don't disagree. (I found The Wall Cheap... but no Dark Side) I'm still looking.
My one exception is to have something signed... I don't disagree with your sentiment but I just don't care to chase celebrity that way.
I loved your #1 but I cheat because I consider my first record the one I stole from my mother. (It was her collection). (And I'll have to ask for a Beatles record from her collection too). But I so fell in love with Queen's Greatest Hits that it is not only my #10, but #1. I... acquired it... when I moved out.

I agree with your choices, especially Dark Side. I also understand your using the "nostalgia factor" for #1. For me, that is the Beatles "Something New". The very first album I owned purchased by my parents as a birthday gift when I was 11 years old back in 1964. I've since gone back to replace all my Beatle albums with the original Capitol black rainbow label original pressings. Any advice for an original copy of Pet Sounds by the Beach Boys? I found plenty in Mono but the Stereo copies are very expensive on Discogs and elsewhere.

I picked one up at a local shop for $30! I felt like I was stealing from them. Try your local stores, if not there - eBay is always a good second stop if you are willing to lose a few auctions and wait it out.

  • @MacAisling

I like your approach, but may have to expand it to a top 15 list. There is a 3rd type of film related record that makes use of the dialogue track to tell a condensed version of the story, much like a radio play or audiobook. Story. Comedy (stand up or sketch routine). Novelty (comedic songs). Pick up one just because the cover art is that amazing, and if the music turns out to be good, bonus. I'd put a really good jazz, blues, or funk album above classical myself. I'd also add the Grateful Dead to the list of bands you should have at least one of. I'd also avoid greatest hits collections or similar compilations for this sort of list.

Get a Dave Mason marble disk. My brother had one, I think he gave it way with his entire collection. Bummer, loved that disk. Btw. I agree with a lot of your choices and I'm old, really old. What's really funny is that I was going to tease you with Whip Cream and Other Delights as a choice...and you offered it. My father was embarrassed when it came out and I had him buy if for me.
