I see others have also recommended Elton John’s “Don’t Shoot Me, I’m Only The Piano Player” and I have to agree. I mentioned previously that all of his early 1970’s albums are outstanding. But “Don’t Shoot Me” is one of my favorites, “Daniel” and “Crocodile Rock” were the singles but “Blues For Baby And Me” just knocks me out. The thing about Elton was he wasn’t just knocking out singles, there really isn’t any filler on his albums. Pretty much any song from any of his first ten albums (yes, ten albums in about five years) could have been a hit single.

Going to add my vote for Elton’s Captain Fantastic album. It’s magnificent. The closing tracks of “We All Fall in Love Sometimes” and “Curtains” will melt your heart and of course the superb “Someone Saved My Life Tonight”. He was still very much at his peak here in 1975.

Thank you Melinda! I appreciate you showing my album and adding the bandcamp link. It was a big surprise! Also, I loved the other records that you showed. I found “Avalon” at an antique store about two years ago. I love the production on that album, Bryan’s lyrics, singing, and of course Phil Manzanera’s guitars. It has a magical quality to it. It’s very elegant. I ended up getting other Roxy Music albums because of it. But “Avalon” is my favorite. That Rolling Stones live LP set looks beautiful. Everything you showed was very impressive. I’m definitely going to have to find that Beach Boys mono. It’s one of my favorite albums and I don’t have it. There’s just so many amazing albums…. So many keep calling my name.

Thanks for another great video. I really appreciate your recommendations of great-sounding records that are something other than jazz. In the vein of Once, Twice, Melody and its beautiful production values, I recently took a Michael Fremer recommendation and picked up Gillian Welch's album "The Harrow and the Harvest." The quality of every aspect of it, disc, sleeve, and record, is amazing. It's fairly depressing Appalachian music, but the sound stage is super defined and it's hauntingly beautiful.

This video got me thinking. Based on many of the albums I've seen you showcase, I think I have a recommendation that you've never heard of. It is something I discovered when it first came out in the mid-70's because I was a hi-fi salesman in a store that also sold vinyl.
It is Stomu Yamashta's "Go". It is definitely a concept album and to listen correctly you start with side two and listen all the way through the entire album. The players are ALL top notch and even include Michael Shrieve on drums (The killer drummer for Santana at Woodstock and now a serious jazz drummer) as well as Al Dimeola, Steve Winwood, Klaus Schulze and Rosco Gee.
Most people would categorize it as "weird" jazz music, but it's one of my favorites from that time period. It needs to be listened to in full and with the lights low and eyes closed. With or without your adult beverage of choice. With a good system it will send you past the solar system riding on the back of Voyager.
You can sample the whole thing here and start with the song, Space Requium. Enjoy!:

@@MelindaMurphy ON the 50th anniversary of Woodstock there was a writeup of Michael Shrieve in the Seattle times. His performance on "soul Sacrifice" at woodstock was the highlight of the movie.
And he was playing at the "White Rabbit" in the Freemont neighborhood in Seattle (where I lived at the time). I went there and this small club was absolutely packed (because of the article, I suspect.
But I was blown away by his band, Spellbound. And his playing? HOLY COW! The guy never stopped improving. And the same can be said of every member of that band. I talked to him later and naturally picked up one of their CD's. Comically, I had not made the connection to my Go and Go Too albums. What a putz! 😋
BTW, I became a regular at the White Rabbit on his nights for a few months. It was a lot more fun when the crowds were smaller.

One of my all time favorite Elton John Records, (and I have just about all of them on CD) is "Don't Shoot Me, I'm only the Piano Player!" I loved every song on that album so much I memorized every song and can (or could.....memory's going to hell now...LOL) sing them all back to you (and could kill any one I could find at karaoke nights). They really cheaped out on the Amazon vinyl reissue, printing the lyrics insert very badly on cheap paper with horrible colors, but at least the music sounds alright. There might be a FEW of his later albums I wouldn't care to get on vinyl, but most of his early to middle career pressings I certainly would (I only have two so far on vinyl) Another pressing you might not have heard of is "Empty Sky". Fantastic songs, but only a few made it onto the radio. Great video, as usual, Melinda! Till next time!

Melinda, you have heard from me once before. I suggested you listen to Paul Simon's "Still Crazy After All These Years," an album I dearly love. In this video, you mentioned another favorite of mine, the BeeGees "Odessa;" what an incredible assemblage of early, prior pop, BeeGees music. One of my other favorites is "In Search Of The Lost Chord" by The Moody Blues. To me, these albums help define an era of honesty in music. Chicago "Five" rates within that group, also, as a standout. I love your videos! You also have exquisite taste, in music and equipment; that Rega table may be the absolute best sound for the buck in all of audio. Keep spinning!! Glad to hear the flooding was not near you, take care and Peace.

Hey Melinda! I’ve been very concerned about you and your husband with the flooding in Kentucky. I have family in Louisville. I’m relieved to see your ok.
Pet Sounds is my favorite Beach Boys album. Never heard of Michael Christiansen but definitely will listen to the album! I appreciate your recommendations very much.
As for the MOFI issue…I’m still a fan! I will continue to purchase their albums no matter the issue. Their vinyl records honestly do sound better, cleaner and overall clearer than other pressings. I’m SO looking forward to MOFI’s release of The Eagles albums especially “One of These Nights” album. It’s one my favorite Eagles album.
Thanks Melinda for another great video!
So happy to see you’re ok. Keeping you and Kentucky in my prayers. Take care! Love & hugs.

Great stuff as always Melinda. Hope you gave Carl & the Passions a listen as well as Pet Sounds because I think it's a lovely record. The band was moving in a different direction at this point, with Brian less involved, and I'm not sure their label did them too many favours linking it with a classic album from the past when the focus should have been entirely forward looking.

Glad to see you are wearing your good taste in music with that cool Dylan shirt. I keep kicking myself for having to sell my mono OG of Pet Sounds. Yes I got a great price for it which I needed at the time, but I know I'll never have it again. That is a really cool two-fer you have of it there. I'm happy you decided to get Avalon by Roxy Music, what a beautiful album! That title track with the guest female background vocals is one of the most lovely pop songs ever in my opinion. Rock of the Westies is an overlooked album unfortunately. Vinyl Ritchie also mentioned that "Don't Shoot Me I'm Only the Piano Player" is also a favorite and it is another one worth having, one of my favorites by Elton. I don't know how the song "Have Mercy on the Criminal" is not considered one of his best songs, his vocals are so amazing on that one. The Stones is always best when they have those intimate concerts, just like on the "Stripped" album. You convinced me to put El Macambo on my wantlist. Excellent purchase with The Basement Tapes, very nice! Great episode Melinda!

funny, I listened to ODESSA for the first time last night. The Bee Gees are MUCH more than their DISCO hits which we all know and love. I've been on a Bee Gees kick lately and even started buying Barbara Streisand albums that Barry Gibb wrote, produced and also sang on. I picked up the BEST OF BEE GEES volume 1 and volume 2 over the weekend for only $4.00 each at an antique shop. Volume 2 is a German import and I don't think it was ever released in the U.S. I listened to those over the weekend twice each. I have 2 copies of ODESSA, the original 1969 release with the red flocked cover with a gold lettering which I got for $14.99 and is one of my favorite albums I own and a 1976 re-release on a regular paper cover which I bought the same day for $2.99 because the vinyl was MINT - I didn't realize until last night that the re-release is a single LP and has less songs and it was re-released due to their newfound popularity with the hits from Saturday Night Fever. So if you decide to get ODESSA I recommend getting the original if you can as it is on 2 LP and has all the songs. It's a great concept album and if no one told you it was the BEE GEEs you would think it was the Beatles or Dave Clark 5 or Pink Floyd or King Crimson because it sounds so psychedelic and nothing at all like 'you should be dancing' or 'staying alive'. I also HIGHLY RECOMMEND Barry Gibb's "Greenfields: The Gibb Brothers SongBook Vol. 1 (Target Exclusive)" which came out in February of last year. I was able to find it a lot cheaper on Amazon amzn.to/3QkCNq2 - it is an album of 14 of his Bee Gees hits reinterpreted as country songs and sung as duets with some of country music's biggest stars and legends like Keith Urban, Alison Krauss, Dolly Parton, Sheryl Crow, Olivia Newton-John, etc.and Barry Gibb's voice still sounds as amazing as ever.

Hello Melinda ! This is an interesting subject. Although the ”must-have” records are very much influenced by each collectors taste and preferences. Also ; the exposure you’ve been subjected to surtain albums , nostalgia and pure peer pressure from common knowledge. We’ve plowed through our records and came to these 5 albums each :
    Annette
    1. Def Leppard - Pyromania
    2. Bon Jovi - Slippery when wet
    3. Whitesnake - 1987
    4. Dio - Holy diver
    5. Rainbow - Bent out of shape
    Roger :
    1. Sex Pistols - Nevermind the bollocks
    2. Nirvana - Nevermind
    3. Pink Floyd - Pulse
    4. Led Zeppelin II
    5. Jimi Hendrix experience - Axis bold as love
We could’ve easily picked 15 each , but these are the ”desert island” choices for OUR part. They ment something special. They made a difference. They changed our perspective. In other words ; they are OUR ”must-have”s. In my case ; my sons gave me the pistols album cover as a tattoo on my arm for my 40th birthday. Stay safe & take care. /A & R.

    Hi Melinda,
I just started watching your videos so I don't really know you and your musical tastes that well but I'm going to list some of my favorite songs and maybe you already know them but if not, you can check them out. I am just about to turn 62 so my memories are vast but concentrated on mostly Top 40, AM radio rock that I grew up with in the 60's and 70's as well as early 80's. These are in no particular order...just as I think of them.
    1. Pictures of Matchstick Men - Status Quo
    2. Talking in Your Sleep - Romantics. There is a 5-minute version of this on 12 inch, 45 that I have but have not listened to yet.
    3. Incense and Peppermints - Strawberry Alarm Clock.
    4. Nancy's Minuet - Everly Brothers. This tune was released in '63 but was not a big hit for them. It is a great song.
    5. The Happening - Diana Ross and the Supremes. This song is from '67 and was part of a soundtrack album.
    6. Something Stupid - Frank and Nancy Sinatra. A beautiful number 1 hit from '67.
    7. Train of Thought - Cher. From her '74 Dark Lady album. I have an original copy of Dark Lady that I got in June of '74 for about 5 dollars from Kmart when I was 14.
I have many more but age is catching up to me. I enjoy your videos and insight.

Hey Melinda great video! Thank you. You told me to let you know 2 things in your replies in previous videos. 1. The mono cartridge makes a Massive difference for mono records! I thought my mono records sounded great before but Holy Moly! I’m enjoying them twice as much now! It’s nice having an interchangeable headshell, so I’m able to easily switch between the two. So Worth It!!! My mono records are blowing my mind now. Now I understand the hype of mono. Also the Ortofon mono cart is Dead Silent! One thing I heard about listening to mono records with a stereo cart is that you’ll get more surface noise. Boy was that true! 2. The new 2022 40th anniversary Motley Crue reissues sound fantastic! They Do need to be cleaned first because of the laminated paper inner sleeves, but… They finally did the Crue right! They are a little dialed down volume wise, but no matter. Crank them up a notch and they sound awesome! Highly recommended. Especially nice to have a good Shout At The Devil pressing. Anyway thanks again and take care

I purchased the "Carl and the Passions" twofer when it first came out. Back then, the Beach Boys were no longer considered cool by a lot of music fans, and that probably affected the record's sales. Anyway, if I remember correctly, the Beach Boy's plan on each upcoming new record was to pair it with an old album and release them as twofers. But I believe they only did it that one time.

Thank you, Melinda and Michael Fremer. Years ago, I picked up a mint copy of Carl and The Passions "So Tough" 2-fer for $5.99 at my friend Jim Dunn's "Planet Grooves" in Clearwater 25 years ago. I had no idea how significant that particular pressing of Pet Sounds was. Now I do. Carl and the Passions is The Beach Boys. This LP was released when the Beach Boys were fading from the public consciousness. Does anyone remember that The Beach Boys showed up at Fillmore East as friends and guests of The Grateful Dead in the spring of 1971 just before The Fillmore closed? Apparently, anyone who was lucky enough to have been there could not believe when in the middle of a Grateful Dead show, Jerry paused and said: "we have some really good friends here that we would like to bring them on stage and jam with" and out walked The Beach Boys. Melinda, I have recommended many LPs to you, and I have never once seen you say: "I bought this on a viewer's recommendation, and it is wonderful". So here goes: The Beach Boys - "Surf's Up". One of their very best LP's. If you buy it and don't love it, I will buy it from you. So, make sure it is in good shape LOL.

Brian Wilson once said "Steamboat" was one of his favorite songs on Holland and certainly of those penned by "bad boy" Dennis Wilson. The picture on the back cover tells a thousand tales of the state that Brian was in. How ironic, he is the only one alive. Maybe there is hope for us lost stoners from back then. Oh wow this is one of the MM episodes I need to take notes on. I’m ashamed to say I don’t have Pet Sounds on vinyl yet, only cd. I need to correct that because I actually love the Beach Boys. I will definitely pick up that Elton record. I’ve passed on that so many times🤦🏻. I also HAVE to check out that Stones El Macabo 1977!
Thanks for the information and another great episode! (An album I really think sounds amazing is Darkness on the Edge of Town) Take care!

Hey Melinda, interesting video. I have the Natalie Merchant album on CD. It was one of a haul of CD's & LP's that my best friend gave me a couple of years back
I'm going to recommend a couple of records to you (I may have already).
Firstly Paul Simon "Hearts And Bones", a much underrated LP. It was the one before "Graceland", however there's so many great moments on it.
The Neville Brothers "Yellow Moon" from around 1987. Amazing diverse record. Very funky. Includes a haunting version of Bob Dylan's "With God On Our Side" sung by Aaron Neville.
Tommy Bolin "Teaser", his first solo album. Great debut effort. A mix of rock, funk & Jazz fusion. He was with Deep Purple when this was released. Sadly died too young at 25 years old.
I think you have a few Deep Purple albums so I'm going to recommend "Come Taste The Band", the only studio record of the 'Mark IV' lineup featuring Tommy Bolin, replacing Ritchie Blackmore on lead guitar. It's quite a great rocking album. Some Purple purists don't like it, I love it. The album was their last before splitting shortly after in 1976.
Finally, Inxs "The Swing", not as highly regarded as some of their later ones, but it's a great one, recorded when they were just breaking into the USA and international fame would find them.
I have a mono remaster of "Pet Sounds" on LP. I've also got the HDCD version which has both stereo & mono remastered as well as the amazing "Pet Sounds" 4CD+ Bluray boxed set which I won in a competition! I'd not heard of the album until around 1988. 😀
Love your work as always Melinda. Take care sweetheart 😘👍😎❤️

I've been using Avalon as a demo disk for ages - I have an SACD version of that as well. I was a big Roxy Music fan back in the 70's, and had pretty much written them off after Flesh + Blood. They really went out on a high note. One I can recommend highly is Dead Can Dance _Into the Labyrinth,_ although the original 4AD UK pressing had some not so great vinyl, and the MoFi version tends to go for about $500 - the UK pressing $150 in VG+. It's not for everybody, but the instruments and ambience are out of this world.

Thanks for the nudge, Melinda. I need to add the oft recommended Beach House to my subconscious fascination with watery groups! (I'm currently exploring The Ocean Blue's catalog.) I had the WB mono LP, the Capitol mono LP, & the Capitol mono CD, but it was the Capitol StEreO remixed (*gasp*) by Mark Linnet version of Pet Sounds that really captured me, bathing me in "all round sound" that Brian couldn't experience since he didn't have good hearing in both ears. I know this is heresy, but to me the stereo early Beach Boys releases are definitely headphone albums.

It's those off the cuff recommendations from people like Mchael Fremer that I really love and scribble down. Said it before but your recommendation of Dark side of the moon I'm eternally grateful for. But I've also been thankful for a certain pressing (on CD) of The Who's "Who's Next". There's quite a few different mixes of this apparently, and I can't even remember which one I've got but it's the best one I've heard by far.

Love this video! All of Elton's albums from 1970-1975 are incredible, but Tumbleweed Connection is a hidden gem in his discography. It contains no "hits" but is a totally immersive listening experience from beginning to end. Beautiful guitar from Caleb Quaye, transcendent performances from Elton, and a spectacularly good recording. UK pressings of Elton's records are consistently better (same with Moody Blues). Bee Gees Odessa is worth finding!

I always love seeing Elton Johns albums getting mentioned...Rock of the Westies is a great album as are, IMO, all of the early albums up to Victim of Love. You can't go wrong with any of them...I've been collecting his records for many years...45s, CD's even a couple of 8 tracks. Regarding the earliest albums...they were all on Uni and were later reissued on MCA with a lesser packaging effort then the originals as most were gatefolds and had really cool inserts and so forth. The fun part is finding clean early pressings...not at all hard to find in most cases but Don't Shoot Me had an all black label with white test and Captain Fantastic has labels that are pretty much the same as the front cover of the album. I've never been disappointed by any of the early issues...all are great albums I can't recommend highly enough.
The Stones album you showed...thats a cool shock to the lucky few who went to see April Wine...i always love hearing the backstories on albums. That Dylan jacket has worn really cool...no ringwear...just the center which does look like snow...too cool...I bet he would get a kick out of seeing that jacket with that cool wear🙂
Thanks for the great videos Melinda :-)

    Hi Melinda,
Thank you for reminding me of Natalie Merchant, Tiger Lilly. I have the CD and have not listened to it in awhile. I will have to listen to it.
I went to the record store last weekend and picked up 3 records for $20:
    1. Steely Dan, Can't Buy a Thrill
    2. The Police, Ghost and the Machine
    3. Third World, Arise in Harmony.
I wasn't familiar with the 3rd record, but could see it was from Jamaica. I thought it would be Regea like Bob Marley. There is a record player in the store for people to play the record before they buy it upstairs. There was some Regae, but it was mostly R&B Funk. It had beautiful artwork on the cover and $3. I went ahead and bought it to try something different and discover new music.

I went to our local record store and found these albums. The person who sold his record collection was mostly 1960s and 70s . He sold them in the morning and I came in that day after work. The owner said I could look in the boxes. They weren't in the new arrival bin yet! I also picked up Talking Heads 77. The red cover with green letters, the Heads first album. Had to have it. All the records cleaned up nicely and sound great. I did pass on a Bob Marley record. The one I would like to have is Exodus, because I like the song "Three Little Birds ".
