This is my favorite board game, and I'm super impressed with how well they were able to explain the basic rules in such a short yet entertaining video.
Such a good basic explanation. People complicate it like you wouldn't believe. Tried to watch RTFM's explanation and, while very nice, the way they present it I don't know how they expect people to follow who haven't played the game/games before. Plus it was half an hour long! This, is perfect! Thanks!
While I do agree with you, the title should say overview, not "how to play root". For someone who maybe heard it was a cool game, got it as a gift, etc and wanted to learn how to play and clicked on this video, they would have no idea the game can't really be learned in 5 minutes.
@davidmattes199 The game itself isn't too complex, but every faction plays VERY different from one another. More so than a lot of other games that claim to be asymmetric. I spent a while teaching it to myself about 2 or 3 weeks ago and I haven't had the chance to play it with anyone yet, but I expect it to be one of my favorites.
Have to admit I clicked on this video expecting a laugh. Trying to explain how to play root in under seven minutes seemed impossible. Yes she did not go into to much depth for each faction, she did a pretty good job explaining them even showing all of the backs of the factions to give things like the relative complexity which I have not seen in any other how to play for Root. All and all this video does a fairly decent job explaining everything especially when you consider it is almost a third of the time of most other how to plays for root.
This channel is excellent & these Board Game Discription & Explanation videos are wonderful. I always check to see if the Board Game , physcial copy or Android App had one of these videos explaining it. I'll tell you something too ... There have been times that her explaination and or enthusiasm has swayed me on way or another.
i watch this to determine whether I'm interested in this game further or no. i need to know if the rules sound fun but I wont watch 18 minutes in depth rules explanations if I dont know if Im gonna buy it. so yeah, good one
Saw on steam so decided to look it up expecting it to be a cute easy to understand game. Will have to rewatch later when not dead tired to understand! lol
We're trying to learn this at the moment. Remember in the show friends, when Joey was trying to teach Ross and Chandler the game "bamboozle"? That's what this game feels like. Lol
Yes, I usually watch short videos like this to learn about the game then if I liked it, I’ll go for a concise explanation and reading the rules then I’ll explain it to my friends and play with them.
Alot of the early copies of the game had that issue. They later put out an updated board pack with tweaked rules and to replace that issue. Wasn't much of a problem after the first batch
Can I get a rules clarification? If you can only move from/into clearings you rule, how can you move troops into a clearing for battle? Did I just misunderstand something or is this an error?
Great Game...loses steam after a bunch of plays, but definitely still a lot of fun. Excited for the Expansion. Great rules breakdown for a rather complicated game to teach. Amazing job Becca. Cannot wait for this game the game.
I've been avoiding the How To Plays for months because I didn't like her yellsplaining style. I'm glad I took a chance on this one, because I appreciate Becca's calmer presentation.
That was only there for the first couple of episodes really. I'm glad she's calmer now too. Hopefully she realised she doesn't have to amp it up to be entertaining :)
This game is so confusing, one can attack only if there are enemy armies, and if there aren't any, it scores one extra damage. How can the attack take place then, and where the extra damage goes anyway?
Actually you can only attack if there are enemy PIECES in the same clearing so if there are buildings like the sawmill or tokens like wood you can attack and gain extra points
I know I am a little late but all and all the game is not to complicated. She went over the general rules pretty solid and you really just have to have an idea of what the other factions are trying to do. For example the cats are about area control and building things to become more powerful. The Eerie are aggressively trying to gain territory, primarily from the cats, to build up a strong empire. However must go through a sort of program for their turn that must be followed or they are left in a weakened state. The Eerie have strong pushes but are followed by times of drought and weakness. The Woodland Alliance is about guerrilla warfare, spreading tokens to eventually build bases and have a small overall presence on the board, but if played right a pretty powerful one. Then the Vagabond, just kinda does it's own thing. It goes on quests and builds relationships with the other factions. What I do not recall her saying is that you win by getting 30 points, or completing a dominance card but let's ignore that for now. The way each faction earns these points are vastly different. Idk if a 10 could understand all the factions but if you play two player with one playing Eerie and the other the cats then he/ she would probably be able to digest it after a game or two. Not saying it is not worth the money but it is expensive if you are not real big into board games going for 60+ dollars. Hope I helped, if you have any other questions feel free to ask I will reply as soon as I can.
I love the idea of this game! But in reality, in order to compete, you have to commit to knowing all of the possible actions the other factions can do at any given time. This is a lot to learn. It's like learning 4 games at once...and you have to remember it all. If you have poor eyesight like me, looking around the table and reading everything every turn is too much. For this reason I didn't enjoy this game.
I understand this game is super popular... but I don't see it... It's got **WAYYYYYYYY** too many moving parts... And as someone who likes understanding ALL of the rules for a game before even suggesting it to others... I would find it very hard to explain this game to anyone.
If you play the cats it is. The Eerie sort of but not really are based around Area of control. The cats are based around building buildings to recruit more warriors or get more wood to build more crafting stations. If you do get the game I recommend that the player with the highest skill plays the cats since they tend to have the most dominance on the board and can keep other factions in check. That is not to say they are overpowered though, it is amazing how balanced all factions are.

Warning, bizarre comments below, from people who expect a five minute overview to be the same as a complete explication of every rule in the game.
agreed this is a quick nutshell of the game
Ah, is that why the first result was a TWENTY-FOUR MINUTE explanation! Is the base game really that complex?

You would have to move them from a clearing you rule into a new clearing for battle.
OK so you can move into a clearing you don't rule then. Thank you!
No problem. I think the rule is that in order to move you must move from a clearing you rule OR into a clearing you rule.
You have to either have rule of the clearing you are in or the one you are going into.
