- Every year, police departments across the U.S. trade in their used firearms when it's time for an upgrade. But a CBS News investigation found thousands of those former police weapons wind up in the hands of criminals. National investigative correspondent Stephen Stock reports.

So what difference does it make that it came from a police force verse a regular citizen if the purchaser is going through the same purchasing process for the same firearm?
They want to ban this practice just appease their own feelings on the matter, whether it reduces crime or not (hint: it doesn't) doesn't matter.
They are trying to reduce the 2nd amendment
Do they realize that police firearms are the same as civilian firearms?
Stop blaming guns. It's the criminals and the choices they make. Don't lessen their crimes but deflecting to the gun.
The criminals are going to get their hands on them regardless but police issued guns ending up in their hands is cause for concern.

Two of my carry firearms were former police arms, they traded them back to the manufacturer, and they were sold by the local gun shop. The manufacturer discount ta their new purchase, and customers can buy the firearm after a background check for $100.00 cheaper than a brand new firearm. If trade ins had not been available I would have bought the same model, and paid $100.00 more for it. Sadly there are criminals out there, and the young man lost his life.
If out taxes buy them guns why are they selling them for profit even through a 3rd party ? They should either be free or sold for charity not put back into their grossly inflated budget

Something to think about
A vast majority of those weapons, including heavy machine guns, are being sold on the dark web. Most end up in cartel states but some M4s have been recovered in the recent attack October 7th in Israel. Recently the ATF filed a report where numerous agents resigned because of missing weapons from federal possession.

There's no difference if a Police Dept sells their guns or if I sell one of my guns. The buyer is still required to completed the required government paperwork and the seller is still required to process the same government paperwork. The news piece demonstrates that you are trying to stigmatize guns, gun sales and gun ownership.

Not sure who funds these segments or has this idea (there are multiple of these same stories about LE trade in guns currently) but ill say it again, all legally sold firearms in the United States sold through an FFL must have the purchaser/buyer complete a 4473 ATF form. Not a single one of these pistols should go un-accounted for other than blatantly giving them to criminals.

No it's 100% because police trade in old firearms , people straw purchase or fraudulently buy them and it ends up with criminals . I should know I have a former police gun as my daily carry and I was convicted with it while committing a "crime" still got it back after too.

@@deadlyta well for the slow ones. Most police departments melt their guns down so they can't be resold or used in a crime. So the problem I'm speaking of is the beginning of the problem. Meaning if they would have melted them down then those crimes with the old officer's gun would've never existed. Not saying other guns would've been use but just not an officer's gun. Slow one

The cartels buy them from corrupt members of the Mexican military or police forces. Even more ironic is many of these firearms are given as free military aid to the Mexican military and police by the US Government as surplus so that the other two thirds of Mexico desperately don't fall to the Mexican Cartels.

@@reidflemingworldstoughestm1394 It can and is all tracked by the county auditor. Besides, all these firearms are sold to distributors who then sell them to Federally licensed gun dealers, who will only sell a firearm if the person passes their NICS background check.
Some of these firearms unfortunately are stolen or otherwise illegally acquired by criminals, but the overwhelming majority of them aren't.

Buying a used police firearm is NO DIFFERENT than buying a new firearm at the gun store. It's just cheaper and used. Or if somebody bought a used gun that came from a private citizen from the gun store.

What's the issue? Most departments don't have the money to have dedicated gunsmiths on site to fix their guns, so they trade them out in a bulk deal every few years the same way they do with cars, office supplies, and so on.
While I agree agency's shouldn't be wasting money and updating guns all the time. But at some point. They do and they should.
Examples. Switching from revolvers to semi auto. Switching from 40 to 9mm.
Switching from an old semi auto to a new one ready for optics etc.
All around the country at the some agencies are ditching sig 320s because of their safety or perceived safety issues.
Even in this video they mentioned a Glock 21. That's a full sized 45ACP gun. Gee I wonder why some agency upgraded from that!
@jakesoros2376 My point is who would need a gunsmith if you're a police officer and you carry a gun 24/7. You should be able to maintain your firearm that includes firearm safety, oiling, and cleaning it properly to ensure your firearm is ready at all times.

@@WeylandLabs Individual officers aren't allowed to work on department issued firearms outside of a light cleaning. All real work on a gun, including replacement parts, has to be done by certified gunsmiths.

A larger issue is missing here. The vast majority of firearms used in the commission of a crime were at one point sold legally. This is why there should be a recorded history of a chain of custody for every firearm in the United States. Find the one who last sold the weapon to the person who committed the crime and hold that person responsible if it can be shown that the seller did not perform all of the background checks that licensed gun dealers are required to do. UNIVERSAL BACKGROUND CHECKS.
