Id like to point out also, it cost me 110 for wood and the kreg jig screws. I already have paint, and the kreg jig, so If you don't have them, this project would cost 130ish. Still, Im glad I found these plans! thanks!
For anyone wondering time commitment, it took me 8 hours with running a router around the full perimeter, doing 3 step sanding on the bottom face and 4 step sanding on the top surface (40 grit belt, 60 grit orbital. 150 grit orbital, 320 grit orbital). Only thing I would do different really is rip the boards to make them square as opposed to the rounded edges, and add some 2x4's underneath in order to take some twist out of the top because of some board issues. Other than that, inexpensive solid and easy to make desk. Thanks for the video

Gotta Remember this is a L shape desk so it will hold ALOT of weight as it’s distributed differently then a straight desk. There is a picture of me sitting on this desk with my dog on my community tab!

Hey! I’m following this step by step. Mines a bit longer though. My question is, on the table top portion that meets the brackets/legs, did you do it flush? Or did you leave overhang?
It doesn’t seem like it? It seemed like an inch or so, maybe I’m confused. Where the 2x4 brackets screw into the table top. How much overhand does it have all around

Amaury Natalie Moreno he explained most of the cuts in the video aside from the top itself. I'm getting ready to build this and the top cuts just depend on how long you want each side of the table to be. For me, one side will be 6 ft and the other five. Just layout the boards in the same pattern he did and then measure and mark the necessary cuts. For the screws he used 1.5 and 2 inch pocket screws. He didn't mention the size screws that he used to attach the braces to the legs but I would assume they are 2-2.5 inch wood screws. The legs are 28 inch, base pieces are 14 inch, braces are 14 inch with 45 degree cuts on both ends. Hope this helps!

What I am wanting to know is, which size pocket screws did you use for table top and which ones did you use for attaching the feet to the legs? I'm guessing 2 inch for the feet and 1.5 inch for the top

Hmmmm.... in too sure honestly. You don’t want to be too front heavy especially with the weight of leaning on it to tip forward. There is a picture of me sitting on the desk in my community tab too. Maybe offset the legs forward a bit to help balance some. Good luck and thanks for watching!

@kalindsLife Novice question: I bought a KregJig set which looks very similar to what you show in the video. The KregJig set (and most others that I can see) can only drill holes in wood that is up to 1-1/2" thick. How does that work with the 4x4's?
You can use it with 4x4s but its not the typical use! Use a larger clamp to clamp the jig to the 4x4.... Do this on opposite sides of each other for best support! A Kreg Vise Clamp will not work as they don't open enough. Hope that helps some!!!

Glad i found the video as I have been looking for an easy but good looking desk idea. My question is if i were to go 5 2x6 deep, would i need another 4x4 leg or 2 for support?
Thanks so much for watching. I’m not sure to be honest but you might be able to extend to support to help. I’m just afraid it would be front heavy and tip forward. I have not have had this issue with 4 and the depth is perfect.
You can try but they usually don’t do precision cuts. They definitely wont do the 45s for the cross braces. Start off with used or cheaper tools and build from there!
Before you did your cutting, did you sand? Plane? Square all your boards with a table saw? I'm totally copying this, but am using red cedar as the table top. Have any finishing recommendations for that?

I watched this video a while ago and used pre stained wood from an older desk to recreate a corner desk with your staggered effect adding a corner triangle so I’m not stuck in the corner. Awesome video. HOW did you connect the 4x4’s to the desktop?
Awesome Mike! Thanks for watching! You can connect 2 different ways.... #1. Drill and screw from the topside down into the 4x4. (I don’t like this way as the screw will be visible felt the top) #2.... Pocket Holes. Drill a 1.5” pocket screw from the bottom side up into the top. Hope that helps!!!

If you can eyeball your 2x6 so there not warped or crowned really bad.... go for it! You will need to buy the Kreg Jig so you can do pocket holes and use a bead of glue along the edges for added strength. Clamp it all together and connect with screws. You should be fine! I did not use a Jointer or table saw on this project! 👍
Unfortunately I do not have an exact lumber list or drawings. I kinda just purchased what I thought I would need and went from there. You can adjust the length and depth to your personal needs and run from there! Sorry Im not much help today!
If I go with building the frame under the desk top, would I need to anchor the top to the frame or with the boxed design of the it just settles to the frame?

quick question @KalindsLife, did you use just run of the mill lumber or one grade up? Also i was looking at kreg recommendations on the screws because i can't find 1.5 inch coarse thread near me and they recommend 2.5 inch coarse thread when attaching 1.5 inch thick boards to one another. what are your thoughts?
You definitely can use the 2.5” screws! And yup.... I used plain ol builders grade pine! If you check out my community page... there’s a pic of me I posted of me sitting on the table....... with my dog!!! Someone said it wasn’t sturdy and I had to beg to differ!!! Yes. You can change it up if need be to fit your room and liking. Remember..... Lowe’s doesn’t guarantee exact measurements. I would recommend going to harbor freight or look on FB Marketplace for an inexpensive miter saw and cut exact measurements yourself! Good luck and have fun! Thanks for watching!!!

Jason it’s ok!! I ended up scrapping the frame sub top. It wasn’t nessassary to use and just added extra weight. I attached the three legs directly to the 2x6 top. It’s extremely sturdy and standing strong to this day! Thanks for watching!!
Was wondering... any suggestions on how to make the desk sturdier if I were to add a couple more 2x6's to add depth? Nervous if I make it deeper, the brackets won't support it.
If you make it deeper you will only need to extend the bottom of the legs to prevent potential tipping. I have to say I use the desk Everyday without any tipping! Hope that helps!

I have some old radios that weigh about 100# each and the desk will be L-shaped 96" x 30" with a depth of 25" And of course most of the heavy stuff will be on the 96" part. What do you think? I do like the fact that it's clear underneath, no bumping of knees.

I know this is an older video but we are going to build this desk this weekend for my craft room. Can someone tell me how the top works out with the groves from the wood 2x6 on top? Do things get in the crack? Do you have trouble writing on it?
Hey Marsha!! We looove this desk and it’s so sturdy. I will say that I do not write on it unless I have a writing surface and yes that is basically due to the seams where the 2x6’s meet. As far as things getting in the cracks.... no. If you use a bead of glue and pocket screws like in the video it will pull tight enough to eliminate any gap between boards. My go to size for 2x4’s Pine is the 1.5” Coarse Thread But when working with 4x4’s I’d go with 2” due to the weight and depth allowance. Hope that helps!!!
Hi! They’re 4x4’s an I believe they were 30” but you can adjust to your required height. Also this is just make from construction grade pine.... nothing too special! Although something like oak or walnut would be awesome put more expensive for sure!!!
I'm considering making this. How hard would it be to sand down the top to the point that it feels like one smooth piece? (I don't want to feel any grooves)
If you were to do this you would need a Jointer and Planer which is quit costly tools. You might be able to use a belt sander to take off some of the top after assembly but the amount of work and time this would take.... even I don’t know that! Good luck with your build and thanks for watching!

You might be able to get some premium pine and use that. Glue it together to create a thicker top. Usually Lowe’s has 1x6 in premium but not 2x6. Your cost might be a bit higher but you would achieve the effect you want.
@@TheCrawlspaceCraftsman Would making it normally (what you did in the video) and then doing some sort of epoxy finish to fill the gaps and flatten the top be a viable solution?
U used an adjustable clamp to hold the KJig on the 4x4. Its the only way to make it work.... they don't make a clamp specifically to work like that. Gotta use one of those life hacks! Hope that helps some!

Once the three legs were built I just set the top on (once I got it in the room) and screwed It on straight up from the bottom side. I used 2.5” screws.

I can respect your thought but this desk is Extremely sturdy, strong and heavy too!! It’s still rocking stong without ANY sag or bowing or shrinking. I will add that a bead of wood glue along the edges could add for that exta security you may be looking for. Thanks for watching!!

Looks great but no glue? Screws work but a glue joint is stronger than the wood itself. Takes a little bit longer to put it together but it's stronger and will last longer
Let me ask this... you are talking about glue in addition to screws correct? I mean I guess you could do the top with glue and clamp together but the rest not so much. Plus not a lot of people have the qty and size clamps that would be needed. Thanks for watching and commenting!!!
KalindsLife correct glue in addition to screws. I use them in place of clamps a lot of times for the same reason you mentioned, especially if I need to make a large panel like the top you made.

When putting the 4x4 pieces together what was the measurement on Kreg for the legs to get the pieces to stay together

Thanks for the vid. Just got done sanding and staining the tops. Quick question, I made the tops 5 deep instead of 4 like you. glued and pocket screws, think the legs and braces are enough? Legs are same height, 16" feet.
Hmmmm.... in too sure honestly. You don’t want to be too front heavy especially with the weight of leaning on it to tip forward. There is a picture of me sitting on the desk in my community tab too. Maybe offset the legs forward a bit to help balance some. Good luck and thanks for watching!

@kalindsLife Novice question: I bought a KregJig set which looks very similar to what you show in the video. The KregJig set (and most others that I can see) can only drill holes in wood that is up to 1-1/2" thick. How does that work with the 4x4's?
You can use it with 4x4s but its not the typical use! Use a larger clamp to clamp the jig to the 4x4.... Do this on opposite sides of each other for best support! A Kreg Vise Clamp will not work as they don't open enough. Hope that helps some!!!

Glad i found the video as I have been looking for an easy but good looking desk idea. My question is if i were to go 5 2x6 deep, would i need another 4x4 leg or 2 for support?

Could you have a hardware store pre-cut these parts so you can just put the pieces together? I don't have any cutting tools.
You can try but they usually don’t do precision cuts. They definitely wont do the 45s for the cross braces. Start off with used or cheaper tools and build from there!
Before you did your cutting, did you sand? Plane? Square all your boards with a table saw?
I'm totally copying this, but am using red cedar as the table top. Have any finishing recommendations for that?
Nope! Didn’t do any of that. I only cut the boards to length. I plan on weather sealing it In a few weeks to extend the life. Thanks for watching!!!

I watched this video a while ago and used pre stained wood from an older desk to recreate a corner desk with your staggered effect adding a corner triangle so I’m not stuck in the corner. Awesome video. HOW did you connect the 4x4’s to the desktop?
Awesome Mike! Thanks for watching! You can connect 2 different ways.... #1. Drill and screw from the topside down into the 4x4. (I don’t like this way as the screw will be visible felt the top) #2.... Pocket Holes. Drill a 1.5” pocket screw from the bottom side up into the top.

What was the size pocket holes you drilled, for mine I'm able to do 1/2, 3/4 and 1 1/2
For the most part I use 1 1/2 course thread pocket screws!

I don't have a jointer or table saw. Did you use either of these on the 2 by 6s for edge-joining them or was your wood straight enough?
If you can eyeball your 2x6 so there not warped or crowned really bad.... go for it! You will need to buy the Kreg Jig so you can do pocket holes and use a bead of glue along the edges for added strength. Clamp it all together and connect with screws. You should be fine! I did not use a Jointer or table saw on this project! 👍

You can use a Kreg Jig on 4x4s. Whoever said that is not right!
You need to use a non-typical clamp. A kreg jig clamp won’t work
What screws did you use for the leg braces that aren’t pocket holes?
Just standard deck screws. Probably 2.5”
Can you post a complete shopping lumber list as well as a cut list? Do you happen to have drawings with dimensions for this desk?
Unfortunately I do not have an exact lumber list or drawings. I kinda just purchased what I thought I would need and went from there. You can adjust the length and depth to your personal needs and run from there! Sorry Im not much help today!
If I go with building the frame under the desk top, would I need to anchor the top to the frame or with the boxed design of the it just settles to the frame?
Definitely once you set the top on…. Anchor it from the bottom up so you don’t see screws from the top side.

I’d like to make this desk but it would be my 1st project. I’d want to make it maybe 1 or 2 boards wider. Where does the supports from the leg to table top need to meet to offer maximum support?
Just adjust the depth of the base to accommodate the additional boards..... you don’t want it too front heavy to be able to “tip” forward.
quick question @KalindsLife, did you use just run of the mill lumber or one grade up? Also i was looking at kreg recommendations on the screws because i can't find 1.5 inch coarse thread near me and they recommend 2.5 inch coarse thread when attaching 1.5 inch thick boards to one another. what are your thoughts?
You definitely can use the 2.5” screws! And yup.... I used plain ol builders grade pine! If you check out my community page... there’s a pic of me I posted of me sitting on the table....... with my dog!!! Someone said it wasn’t sturdy and I had to beg to differ!!! Yes. You can change it up if need be to fit your room and liking. Remember..... Lowe’s doesn’t guarantee exact measurements. I would recommend going to harbor freight or look on FB Marketplace for an inexpensive miter saw and cut exact measurements yourself! Good luck and have fun! Thanks for watching!!!

Jason it’s ok!! I ended up scrapping the frame sub top. It wasn’t nessassary to use and just added extra weight. I attached the three legs directly to the 2x6 top. It’s extremely sturdy and standing strong to this day! Thanks for watching!!

Any advice on how to joint if instead of a herringbone/staggered pattern I want to make the top out of two sections jointed together?
The only thing I can think of is cut the ends at a 45 degree angle and pocket screw them together from the underside. Hope that helps some!
Was wondering... any suggestions on how to make the desk sturdier if I were to add a couple more 2x6's to add depth? Nervous if I make it deeper, the brackets won't support it.
If you make it deeper you will only need to extend the bottom of the legs to prevent potential tipping. I have to say I use the desk Everyday without any tipping! Hope that helps!

I have some old radios that weigh about 100# each and the desk will be L-shaped 96" x 30" with a depth of 25" And of course most of the heavy stuff will be on the 96" part. What do you think? I do like the fact that it's clear underneath, no bumping of knees.

I know this is an older video but we are going to build this desk this weekend for my craft room. Can someone tell me how the top works out with the groves from the wood 2x6 on top? Do things get in the crack? Do you have trouble writing on it?
Hey Marsha!! We looove this desk and it’s so sturdy. I will say that I do not write on it unless I have a writing surface and yes that is basically due to the seams where the 2x6’s meet. As far as things getting in the cracks.... no. If you use a bead of glue and pocket screws like in the video it will pull tight enough to eliminate any gap between boards. Size pocket screws to put the 4x4 together ?
My go to size for 2x4’s Pine is the 1.5” Coarse Thread But when working with 4x4’s I’d go with 2” due to the weight and depth allowance. Hope that helps!!!

Hi! They’re 4x4’s an I believe they were 30” but you can adjust to your required height. Also this is just make from construction grade pine.... nothing too special! Although something like oak or walnut would be awesome put more expensive for sure!!!
I'm considering making this. How hard would it be to sand down the top to the point that it feels like one smooth piece? (I don't want to feel any grooves)
If you were to do this you would need a Jointer and Planer which is quit costly tools. You might be able to use a belt sander to take off some of the top after assembly but the amount of work and time this would take.... even I don’t know that! Good luck with your build and thanks for watching!

You might be able to get some premium pine and use that. Glue it together to create a thicker top. Usually Lowe’s has 1x6 in premium but not 2x6. Your cost might be a bit higher but you would achieve the effect you want.

I’m need to pocket hole- for the 4x4’s- how do I set the jig? It only goes up to 2x4 size.
U used an adjustable clamp to hold the KJig on the 4x4. Its the only way to make it work.... they don't make a clamp specifically to work like that. Gotta use one of those life hacks! Hope that helps some!

Once the three legs were built I just set the top on (once I got it in the room) and screwed It on straight up from the bottom side. I used 2.5” screws.
Would this desk hold your weight if you sat on the middle corner? Seems like there isnt much support there.

Looks great but no glue? Screws work but a glue joint is stronger than the wood itself. Takes a little bit longer to put it together but it's stronger and will last longer
Let me ask this... you are talking about glue in addition to screws correct? I mean I guess you could do the top with glue and clamp together but the rest not so much. Plus not a lot of people have the qty and size clamps that would be needed. Thanks for watching and commenting!!!
KalindsLife correct glue in addition to screws. I use them in place of clamps a lot of times for the same reason you mentioned, especially if I need to make a large panel like the top you made.
