I have an adjustable base just begging for this same application. Was going to do the exact same thing but use birch plywood and leave the edges exposed. Great video! Thanks.
I made countertops for my home in a similar fashion. I used MDF board instead of plywood and 45 mitre cut the edge boards. Before applying the contact adhesive you've GOT to make sure there isn't any dust or sawdust on either surface, otherwise you'll regret seeing those little bumps after bonding. Another way to apply the laminate is take a long, 50' extension cord, wipe it totally clean, then lay it onto the flat surface once the cement has tacked up in a back and forth S pattern. Just like you did, start at one end after properly aligning and use the roller to put pressure on the laminate. As you work your way across, slowly pull the extension cord out from under the laminate. I used a 45 cutter instead of the round over bit. The laminate edge is VERY sharp after cutting so taking a file to the edge to knock off the knife edge is a good idea as it can cut you.
A joy to watch your desk video. I admire your imagination to keep coming up with great ideas and sharing your passion for woodwork. Well done. One Handed Maker - Australia
There's something about the way you capture the reality of woodworking - brushing the sawdust off of the table, getting advice, etc - that I really respect. Subbed.
Really sharp-looking job! I'll email you my shipping address! lol Only thing I've done differently on sticking down the laminate that someone doing it for the first time might consider, is to pull the sticks out from the middle instead of one end. Minor differences in how the sticks are spaced and how much is sagging between them or not, can over a long enough run end up with the laminate skewed too far to one side or the other by the time you reach the other end of a long piece (depending on how much overlap you left when cutting it), causing you end up partly exposed on one of the corners. Sticking it down from the middle out, cuts this possible skew in half. But yours looks great! I just mean as general advice, to help eliminate a possible problem.
lovely build, thanks for sharing!...i personally would have applied the banding flush after laminating as I'd be worried about the sharp edges chipping
Looks great brother! I did not know you had a podcast until I watched this. Slowly catching up on episodes and subscribed to the other guys! It's a great listen...BBQ and woodworking, with a hint of cigars and bourbon. Right up my freaking alley! Lol
Great idea! Thanks for making this I've got an L shape standing desk frame on the way and wanted a nice custom curved inside corner, this process will work great for that!
Love the build and thanks for the great ideas. I have an uplift corner desk but lookin to go a rectangle. I am curious if you can router the veneer and the banding so you have a smooth transition from the side to the top without the little bump up you had. I like the look of how you did it but that little ledge bugs my arms so curious if you think I can smooth it out.
That’s a great looking desk for about as simple as you could ask for! Well done! I’m about to make a desk for my kids for their room and I think you’ve inspired me to do something very similar! Well done!
Hey Jess how's my favroite you tube guy doin? Thanks for the video and sharing where I ALWAYS learn something! Beautiful top! Look forward to more! I use my MicroJig bench vice you taught me every week. My Etsy shop is going fantastic so the bench vice is a big part of my work! Thanks Jess. Peace Out!
I found a desk at value village for $20 it was only a generic desk with a riser actually really nice but I ended up extending it by adding a 4ft board so that it takes up almost my entire wall lol. It added so much space, oh and I used the the riser for a wall mount piece to hang over our fancy coffee station, I love making something out of nothing. Looked up the value of the desk I bought too after and it was originally a $300 desk so pretty sick find.
Beautiful desk. I love the black formica. One tip. If you can find a small piece of acrylic I'd recommend making a lengthened base for your trim router. It needs to be as wide as the original base & 2-3 times as long. Cut a hole at one end for your bits + the screws & attach a small handle at the opposite end, which you can also trim down into a pointed taper. This base gives great stability when doing jobs like trimming the edges, preventing the router from tipping. Only takes a few minutes to make & can be installed when needed. Looks like you had a steady hand on this project but it is very easy to tip & gouge into your walnut with the standard 'square' base.
This for sure, watching the wobbles was sad. Also, test profiles before committing, leaving that little sharp edge might be a look you like, but might hate the feeling when using it.
I have a pretty simple question about this build. I see the frame has a lift capacity of 355 lbs. Since you used 3/4 inch plywood that seems like a lot of weight. What is the weight of the top? The best guess is fine too.
You can also just buy the laminate already attached to a 4x8 and add your edge trim so you don't have to worry about the glue up process of the laminate sheeting. This project is more of a laminate than a plywood craft though. It did turn out nice!
I've done a large laminate once... ONCE!!! I'll never do that again. If using laminate or veneer, I do it with sections now; versus the 1 large panel. It allows the glue and rolling process to be a lot less nightmarish, while preventing any smaller air bubbles from sneeking in. It also gives you more artistic ability for things like mosaic designs.
I would like to ask you what sort circle that you install dado blade 6 nch As circle pin at the circle machine I( makira., bosch, dewakt) I use only 15 mm . What circle are suitable for saw dado
Nice end result but putting your table upside down on the floor made me cringe. Why not put a towel down first to prevent the possibility of small scratches?
@@PenaltyBoxWoodshop I failed to mention that I also love the desk. I've got a similar setup but used a ready made top from Ikea. Your build inspired me to replace it since the one I have is a bit too shallow for comfortable work. Thanks!
Awesome simple build, not complicated at all and certainly a confidence builder. Thanks for sharing.
Thank you! I appreciate the kind comment!

Pretty cool... I love how you reached out to your Mentor... you're never too old to learn something new. Beautiful desktop, Brother !!!
That edge detail made such a nice difference! Well done as always.
Two remarks: I love the clamp-to-clamp solution and, like you, I love my biscuit joiner. Nice project!

Wow looks great, nicely done!
Beautiful table. You should have miter the corners for that 5 star look of perfection.
Absolutely amazing. Thanks for sharing. Have a great day.👍👏

Just found your channel. Loving the content. Hope to see you come back with some new vids.

Really nice job! Like the desk a whole lot! Thanks Byrne
Nice work and explanation.
8:04 I see you have an official instruction reader and soda-pop drinker helping out there!
Edge banding should be measured and installed after laminate so it looks inserted instead of topped on.
Oh man yah that is such a great idea! I’ll definitely have to do this for my build
This was my thought as well.
I actually like the way he Finished the edge, it might make the laminate more susceptible to chipping over time though
Yeah that a what no was thinking. But I do like that round over would you be able to do that or would it beat up the edge of the laminate?
Pretty much this that thing is going to start peeling after after a few months.
That looks GREAT! Thank you!
Mitered corners on your edge banding would’ve been a nice addition.
Thanks for a great video. I wish I had as many tools as you! They sure make a job like this easy.

where would you source such a laminate already attached to 4x8?
@@tomgleeson9289 In this case, a sheet of black melamine would be less than $50 so I'd go that route. You can order it at any home center.
Could you re-specify which router bit you used on the top fermica/edging to cut/round off top corner?
Nice video. I wonder is there a way to make the laminate sits flash with the edge ?
Yes. Laminate the plywood first then add the walnut edges. Got to be very pricise though cause you don't sand the laminated layer
Roll contact cement from centre both way
Wow formica is hard to find now.

Do you have the measurements listed anywhere for this project?
Could you post a link to the folks who made the base? Much appreciated!
Yep! Totally meant to do that! Sorry!
@@PenaltyBoxWoodshop I don't mean to bug you, but I still don't see it. Are you posting it in the description?
Please...?
It’s in the description now. Sorry it took me a little while to get it in there.
@@PenaltyBoxWoodshop No worries brother. I truly appreciate it.
Are the edges on that Lamanet top sharp?

Yep, works great!

Yes sir, it is!
What is the name of the black material?
Did it bend over the time? You didn't put any counter pressure laminate on the back. How does it look like now?
It still looks brand new. No bending or warping at all.

can you use a squeegee to put it on?

Curious what grade of 3/4" plywood did you use? also it looks like it was previously painted?
I don’t remember exactly but it was painted on one side. Pre-bought like that.
I have a loose edge, any advice on how to stick them again?
45's on the corners would have been a good touch
Really nice but I would have mitered the corners of the walnut

I put it in the description. Sorry about that
@@PenaltyBoxWoodshop thank you My wife wants me to build one for her.

Would it be possible to add the walnut trim to a countertop that already has the Formica on it?
You could but it won't have that perfect fit.
Dope!
Really like your content, but what happened to you? Are you going to make more videos?
I will be back. Undergoing a shop move
What is the cm of the size you cut bro
Hi, is it ok to make a work from home desk with MR (moisture resistant) ply?
Not doing the 90s in the corners, oof. Not sinking the top into the table, oof. But looks nice if you dont look at those 2 :D
