    I want to thank you (3 years after you made this video). I followed your guide because my EVGA 980ti is 5 years old and running at 85c all the time. After cleaning and applying new Arctic mx-4 thermal paste it's now running at 65c in the same games. Amazing. The old thermal paste on mine was even worse than yours, with less than half of the chip covered. So once again, thankyou for guiding me through this quite scary repair!!!

    Hi Joe, do you remember how many degrees you shaved off re-thermaling this GPU?

    • @Joeteck
      @Joeteck  4 года назад +1

      It takes about 100 hours of curing. Not going to see am immediate change. Each thermal paste has a different curing time. However if I would to guess probably 2 to 5 C

    Had 980 ti SC cards that were screamers and worked great up past 1450 MHz in SLI, only used very briefly between them being a sale price and 1080 SC cards launching and replacing them. However now after pulling the 980 ti's out of cool dark storage neither card can operate anywhere near correctly with games. Needs underclocked and power limit increased just to get Civ 6 to not instantly crash and GTA VI can't run past the stock EVGA oc speeds and needs the 110% power. Cards run the same 60-65 degress I remember so I think it's some other planned obsolecense fuckery or else they didn't really sell me sound silicon if it can't hang out for a few years both cards are exhibiting the same issues. Not very happy with GPU failure being a feature so not really excited about 3000 series or any of it anymore if this is the state of my flagship product. Thanks for the video but don't think it's worth messing with just a bad purchase decision to be corrected.

      I did hear crazy rumors that the 3090 cards have RAM on both sides causing some heat issues. Hense the cooling fans on both sides.. I will be getting the RTX3090TI when available. I will do an unboxing and review of it. Probably EVGA.

      Hello friend, I'm talking about Brazil. I don't know if it's still important to you, but the issue is easily resolved by uninstalling Geforce Experience. I had the same problems and they were all resolved.

  • @dreddy_g
    @dreddy_g 5 лет назад

    I just did this on my evga 980ti acx 2.0 the other day. Removed the heatsink (be careful with the two connectors!), blew out dust from the fan and fins using canned air, wiped out the old thermal paste from both the heatsink and GPU using alcohol and a clean rag. Applied thermal grizzly kryonaut thermal paste on the center of the gpu (about pea size amount). Put everything back together. No noticeable performance difference but i did notice the fans did not need to run as fast or as often. (I only play on 1080p with a 144hz monitor)
    Now, I'll probably hold off on upgrading for another generation. Thank you for this video!

    wow, didn't think to use a can of air, just uses his "mouth" to blow the dust off. That's a really good way to get not only germs but your own spit onto the heat sink and potentially risk shorting the GPU out upon reapplying the heat sink.
