I liked that trick of masking the chip and applying the heat sink compound. Nice neat job!
Thanks! It's my favorite way now to apply thermal paste... LOL
The magic starts at @9:00 for those interested
It seems quite an autistic level of detail for a simple gpu repaste.
I just got me one of these cards 2nd hand for a oldschool/midrange gaming setup build I'm currently doing and it's pretty dirty with dust so this video is so tremendously helpfull! Very well done!
Cool! Glad this will be helpful! Keep in mind my mistakes so you don't do the same. :-)
Grew up on that music... every Sunday lol.
That card was in pristine shape to start with. Nice vid nonetheless.
Thanks for the upload!
Thanks! What were you doing on Sundays listening to bolero?
@@ArtofServer let's say, the upbringing was rather "traditional"
Hello, great video, can you tell me the thickness of the thermal pads on the memory chip and on the VRM part? Thanks.
Sorry, this was quite some time ago and I don't recall.
What Air blower do you use? and it would be great if you could tell what size of drivers you needed for the screws. Good choice in music.
It's just a regular airgun I bought from HFT and a portable air compressor from HD under the table.
yeah, good point about the size of the tools. at some points, I tried to show the camera the tool specs, but it might not have come through in the fast forwarding. it was mostly a #1 Philips, 1.5mm and 2.0mm allen, and maybe something else...
thanks for watching! :-)
What size is the hex screw driver you show around time stamp. 1:35? 2.75
that was 1.5mm I believe. I should have slowed down the fast-forward when I presented to tools to the camera... thanks!
Thanks! Great video and background music choice!
Glad you liked it!
could you tell me which size of thermal pads are needed for the gtx 980 reference edition ?
Sorry, I don't have the dimensions of those thermal pads. Thanks for watching!
It's 1mm
Hello mate, good job! I'm gonna get one tomorrow , is it holding well in gaming ? does it worth it ? for a cheap price compared to current serieses.
This card has been working flawlessly since this video. Worth it is up to each individual, but I personally enjoy restoring old things and getting them to work optimally. It's still a decent card if your graphics demands are not high.
Is it possible to remove the PCB without dis-assembling the entire cooler?
I don't think so. You need to get to the screws underneath the top cover to remove the fan section. See the sequence in this video.
4:14 im confused how you get the black shroud off?
after removing all the screws, connectors, etc., it just comes off. there are thermal pads between it and the DRAM so that might be holding on, but it should peal apart if you pry on it gently.
@@ArtofServer yup thanks i got mine, was just very sticky.... had to pry it off
have you ever did any refurbishing of server fans? i was thinking of maybe looking into oiling my R610 and R710 fans since obviously when you buy one these days there usually pulled from a working environment and have been most likely running 24/7 for years and i was curious if it would make much difference by doing it.
if not perhaps you would consider doing a video on it and maybe doing a before and after test to see if it makes them sound better and/or quieter.
thanks.
I like the idea, except I don't know that I have any servers with really dirty fans. The servers I've gotten out of data centers usually are super clean inside because the data center has filtered clean air. That said, the servers I run at home do get dusty and I clean them out once a year or so. But, I've never noticed them run better or worse.
@@ArtofServer yeah mine also came clean but i was thinking more along the lines of oiling the bearing in the fans as i know from what i've read it's a pretty simple thing providing you can peel the circular label off, i was just curious if it would make a difference given how old some of them can be and given how they pretty much have been running 24/7
@@razorx2024 Singer sewing machine oil is what I use to reoil fans. If you end up with fans that don't have the rubber plug access point under the sticker, and you are patient and careful, you can drill a tiny hole where the access point should be under the sticker. You just have to go really slow and be very careful.
@@ConfusionDistortion good to know thanks
I want to do this to my 980ti but I’m not sure if it needs it it kicks up to 83c but never goes over
A need is different than a want. Do what you want.
Sorry I know this video is old but what are thermal pad thickness
I don't recall anymore, but I think someone else commented about it with the thickness... look around the comments for this video.
Thanks, was helpful when I cleaned my own gtx 980 ti
Glad to hear it!
This song... I can't remember what show/movie/anime used it that I watched recently and now it's bugging me omg
It's in the description.. but it is Boléro.
Relaxing to watch. Just curious, did you bought it? Any special propose for it?
glad you enjoyed it. yeah, I got a few of these as temporary GPUs for some workstation builds. prices for anything better seems to be outrageous right now.
Olá, tenho uma idêntica, qual espessura das almofadas térmicas? Obrigado caso responda
Sorry, this was a long time ago and I don't remember the thickness of the thermal pads.
@@ArtofServer abrigado pela boa vontade, paz
A classic and powerful video card, 980 Ti forever ;), nice video.
Thanks! Yeah, when this GPU first came out, I didn't have the money to spare so never got one when they were new. I needed some GPUs recently for workstation builds as temporary GPU until prices come down on the newer stuff.
Thanks, Art enjoyed the video like always wish you were local I have a dell c2100 given me all kinds of hell see you soon
@kirbypfilms1 thanks! where is "local" to you?

I still use this card and mine is much much dirtier. Compared to my graphics card the card in the video was already clean at the start. I think it's starting to cause issues.
it was relatively easy to clean. i just had an EVGA 980Ti short itself out though.. :-(
I've got 2 non TI's and they're in a dusty state. Building up the courage to do this before selling them on after an upgrade...
Would be a good time to sell before GPU supply gets better. It wasn't hard to do. This video was my first time taking apart the 980Ti.
Fark me, I watched the whole thing for the music..... lol Old card now but music was nice touch.
LOL.. thanks!
Me too ! Ha ha ha ! Nice recording as well. Thanks @ArtofServer
980ti is still a mean card today.
It's pretty decent value. Can still play many games and still very usable for video encoding H.264
If someone made a composite fitting for three fans and throw this turbine cooler in the trash this graphics card might work well and keep it's cool.
Ironically, the EVGA versions of the 980Ti with their ACX cooler has failed me more often than this stock cooler.
lmao nice, I still have that card running in my ubuntu box. the circle of tech !
Thanks!
Браво, просто БРАВО!
Thank you 😊
Mine started to artifact and I threw it away. I bet this guy could’ve brought it back to life.
That's too bad! Thanks for watching!
You missed a bit - grin
Indeed. :-)
Isnt that just the Nvidia founder's model? not evga with their own cooler and branding? coz thats definitely what this is
It's EVGA branded version of the 980 TI founder's edition.
