    - Nonmetallic electrical cable, for powering new lights and outlet strips
    - Blank plate, to conceal wires in junction box
    - Electrical tape, to secure cable to fish tape
    - Twist-on wire connectors, for securing wire connections
    - Dimmer wall switch, to power new lights and outlet strip
Tools for How to Install Undercabinet Lighting and Power:

    - Cordless drill, to drive screws
    - Fish tape, for pulling cable through walls
    - Wire strippers, used to strip off wire insulation
Steps for How to Install Undercabinet Lighting and Power:
    1. Go to the main electrical panel and turn off the power to the existing undercabinet lights and outlets.
    2. Unscrew the old light fixtures from the underside of the cabinets.
    3. Use a jigsaw to cut a hole in the cabinet back for an old-work junction box.
    4. Cut a similar hole in the wall directly above the cabinets.
    5. Push two nonmetallic electrical cables through the upper hole and down into the hole cut inside the cabinet.
    6. Cut a hole in the kitchen wall for an old-work switch box, then use a fish tape to pull a cable into the hole.
    7. Push the ends of the cables through the rear of the switch box, then screw the box to the kitchen wall.
    8. Wire a dimmer switch into the box; be sure the switch is designed for use with LED lights.
    9. Make the wire connections in the junction box inside the cabinet. Screw a blank cover onto the junction box.
    10. Make the wire connections inside the light fixtures, then screw the fixtures to the underside of the cabinets.
    11. Run a new cable to the wall beneath the cabinets, then install the 120-volt outlet strips.
    12. Make the final wire connections at the outlet strips and test your work.

On the other hand, several states and local AHJ's have reduced the model code requirements especially concerning arc fault protection and I would agree with your concerns about building to the code minimums.

I’m thinking they had a non permitted remodel when they put in that original electrical. They didn’t put outlets on the smaller counter to the left of the stove, which is more than a foot wide. I didn’t hear anything about the two required countertop 20 amp circuits, and it looks like this only had one. Also, no mention of gfci. I don’t think Scott would do a non-GFCI outlet in a kitchen, so I’d have to assume they were protected at the breaker, or that strip had protection he didn’t mention.

Yes. It’s usually ok because at that height, they are not susceptible to damage.

leds do burn out but they should have used one with a replaceable led strip... and one that has more leds per foot than what appears to be 2... i prefer 5-10 leds per foot it gives good coverage and when one dies you dont notice it... oh and leds can blow in a thunderstorm easier than a normal bulb...

I don't get it. There was already 110v at the florescent fixture. I would have put a 12-24VDC power supply under the cab and run 18-20AWG low voltage wire behind the microwave. Same effect, less than half the work. Much less cost.
I put a motion sensor on mine with a timer. You enter the room...bing...we have light. Great if your hands are full and you are groggy.

LEDs do burn out. When they're built into the fixture they're impossible to replace.

    • @Arieeeee

Nothing lasts for ever but you'll easily get 5-10 years out of these vs. those old flourescents that would need a new bulb every year and a new ballast. In many cases they sell replacement LEDs and worst case, you buy a new fixture after 10 years.

Mr Luqman: it depends on their manufacturer and lamp type. But i've replaced all my old lamps with led ones 2.5 years ago, so far so good.

    • @Arieeeee

Mr Luqman, with LED's you get what you pay for usually. I've only installed Maxxim lighting and Kichler and they have not let me down.

Not sure what fluorescent bulbs and ballasts you've had experience with, but it's actually more like bulb replacement every 5 years and ballast replacement maybe once in 20 years.
