    Kevin helps a couple add task lighting to their dark kitchen in Brooklyn.
    Expert assistance with this project was provided by Vinnie Verderosa of Supercharged Electric [superchargedele...].
    The slim fluorescent fixtures Vinnie installed above and below the cabinets are manufactured by Jesco Lighting [www.jescolight...]. The model number is SP4-16/30.
    Shopping List for How to Add Task Lighting to a Kitchen:
    Old-work recessed lights, used to replace existing ceiling fixtures
    Fluorescent task lights, for installation above and below the cabinets
    Junction boxes, used to house wire connections
    Armor-sheathed cable and cable connectors, used to power the new light fixtures
    Twist-on wire connectors, for joining the wires
    Interconnect cable
    Tools List for How to Add Task Lighting to a Kitchen:
    Flat pry bar, used to remove old ceiling light fixtures
    Cordless drill and 3/4-inch-diameter hole saw, for drilling cable holes
    Drywall saw
    Reciprocating saw with metal-cutting blade, used to saw through hanger bar
    Wire strippers
    Screwdriver
    Oscillating multi-tool, used, if necessary, to trim the cabinet
    Steps for How to Add Task Lighting to a Kitchen:
    1. Turn off the power to the kitchen lights at the main electrical panel.
    2. Disconnect the existing ceiling light fixtures and pry the electrical boxes from the ceiling.
    3. Use a reciprocating saw with a metal-cutting blade to saw through the old hanger bar, then bend the bar out of the way.
    4. Take the template from the new recessed-light kit and hold it over the hole in the ceiling.
    5. Trace around the template and then enlarge the hole with a drywall saw. Repeat for the other recessed light.
    6. Run a length of armor-sheathed cable from one recessed fixture to the other. Be sure to use an approved cable connector to secure the cable to the box.
    7. Make the wire connections inside the fixtures' junction boxes using twist-on wire connectors.
    8. Push the recessed fixtures up into the ceiling, then engage the pressure clips to lock the fixtures onto the ceiling.
    9. To install over-cabinet lights, start by removing the switch plate and switch from the switch box on the wall.
    10. Cut a small access hole in the wall above the upper cabinets to expose the metal wall stud.
    11. Drill a 3/4-inch-diameter hole through the stud and through the wall directly above the upper cabinet.
    12. Run a length of armor-sheathed cable from the top of the cabinet, through the hole in the stud, and down to the switch box on the wall.
    13. Screw a junction box to the top of the cabinet and feed the end of the cable into the box. Use an approved cable connector to secure the cable.
    14. Run a second cable from the junction box on top of the cabinet, down the wall, and to the underside of the cabinet.
    15. Install a second junction box to the underside of the cabinet. Connect the lower end of the second cable to the under-cabinet box.
    16. Screw metal mounting clips to the underside of the cabinet, directly behind the face frame, then snap on the fluorescent light fixtures.
    17. Install one light fixture under each cabinet. Join the fixtures together with interconnect cables.
    18. If necessary, use an oscillating multi-tool to cut away part of the cabinet to allow the cable to lie flat.
    19. Repeat Steps 16 and 17 to install fluorescent light fixtures on top of the cabinets.
    20. Reinstall the light switches and turn the power back on.

    I think the reason they had two lights on two switched on the opposite side of the room is because there is two entrances to the kitchen. Now they have to go to the other side of the kitchen to turn on the lights if they are coming from what looks to be the hallways for bedrooms maybe.

      +cgriesemer It's pretty simple. The switch for the counter lighting was simply re-routed to go above the cabinet as they showed. The wire that originally ran from switch to the 1st ceiling light was capped or removed. After the job was done, the switch in the kitchen controls power to the small boxes above and below the cabinets.

    This is really old - the fixtures nowadays are much smaller and you don't need that big hole

    He looks like he is having trouble he could of just done a 3way so the home owner would’ve had an option of turning on and off the lights from either way

    also, personally I think it was a crappie segment in general. there's alot wrong with the overall lighting design. don't call in a electrician to do kitchen design. just saying.

      interior designer? Or figure out it yourself and then call an electrician and tell him what to do.

    • @Arieeeee

      I wouldn't call it crappy given the type of residence this is- tract home or cookie cutter condo. I don't mean it as disrespect but it's certainly not a custom or luxury home and whereas a person living in a $5 million house wouldn't care much if you spent $1000 on top of the line LED fixtures from a designer store, another couple of thousand and brought in a design team, etc, a customer like her likely would want something affordable from Home Depot that gets the job done even if it's not glamorous.

      I think it's decently set up. It's not crappy, that's for sure. They made sure to hide most of the wires and did the little touches that make it awesome. Plus they can upgrade to LED or change things up later.

      Arie there is no such thing as designer LEDs. this is not victoria's secret or some supermodel show, its light fixtures for a damn house regardless of price.

  • @antigen4
    @antigen4 7 лет назад +9

    really - this is NOT the way to do things! I think the very WORST gaffe was when the handyman cut right THROUGH the structural beam of the cabinet to hide the lighting cable - when it really ought to have been done with a drill (no more than 1/4" bit) through the CENTRE of it. that way very little of the carrying capacity of the structural element would be compromised....

    • @some0ne8
      @some0ne8 7 лет назад +3

      Seriously? The dado holding the bottom panel is structure. The rest below it doesn't do anything. Maybe hold the faceframe but that's about it. So unless you hit the faceframe with a hammer a few times, there's no problem.

    • @jwdewdney6757
      @jwdewdney6757 7 лет назад

      it's a hack and you can probably 'get away' with it but there are WAY cleaner and better ways to go if one is going to have just a little pride in one's work... hell - why not just tape an extension cord over the front of the cabinet then? looks like hell but 'there's no problem'...

    • @RubbinRobbin
      @RubbinRobbin 7 лет назад +2

      He would have tosplice the cable to get it through the hole, code wont allow it you mst be a cabinet maker, boo hoo lol.

    Why spend hundreds of dollars on stupid light fixtures and all those unnecessary wiring like a 12-2 AWG. Go on amazon and buy yourself a 16 foot led wiring 5M any kind you want for like under 20$ and install that shit yourself like how i did.
