Tip for fishing wires down a wall: you can use string and some small chain as weight and drop that down to your box. Sometimes you can drop it right in. In tight spots a second hand is necessary to grab the chain with a wire or needle nose while the person in the attic suspends the chain. *Doesn't work with insulation in the walls

Half hot! That's a new one for me. We call that a Split-Circuit. And losing a fish rod would suck 'cause they are expensive for the good ones. I think that you pointing out that extra precaution should be taken when installing 4" waffer lights in an unaccessable space is a HUGE piece of good advice. 4" vs. 6" makes a big difference. Great video as always.

And they suck, it’s like flood lights, prefer recessed lights.

Love them for the quick installs.wke note that the recessed bevel style wafers will not sit under a joist at all because they have more than a 1.5" rise on the wafer.

Just wanted to say, that's interesting when you talked about the ground being up on half hot receptacles.
My pops always judges other peoples electrical work, because technically, the ground should always be up, not down. This is due to the design of grounded plugs. You'll notice, the ground prong is longer than the other two, and that is to counter act gravity when something is plugged in. When installed correctly this way, gravity works to keep the cord plugged in, rather than unplugging it.
Still good information though, since it's always good to know other people's conventions, even if a snobby electrician like my dad would just call it wrong. Lol.

Many years ago I bought an oscillating tool that got me out of a jam. I took it to the fire station to show the guys, and before the week was over, 2 of the guys bought their own oscillating tools! If it could only drill holes....

    Hi Stud Pack!
I wouldn’t say “can lights” are obsolete these days so much as specialized. There are situations where you can make good use of the ’recessabilty’ that a can provides. In my case, it was an 8-foot ceiling with seating underneath (a living room). By using “cans” I could move the light source up above the ceiling level an use black baffles. This really helped to cut glare when sitting in under the lights. Hope this counts as a “useful tip”!

Not doing a pilot can sure get you on those hole saws, they can jerk you yo the side and dig in if you dont predrill. Sound advice!

Also, I bought a buzz saw last year for one little job, didn’t think I would use it much, but I use that sucker all over the place now. Great tool. Expensive blades.

There's a bit of a debate about where best to place recessed lighting in kitchens. On side is, as Paul said, that the light should not be behind you, because then you'll cast a shadow on the countertop as you're working. The other side is that the light should be placed farther back so that the top cabinets don't cast a shadow on the countertop. It somewhat depends on the height of the ceiling, but the latter approach would result in the lights being placed 3 feet back from the wall, or 2 feet back from the face of the cabinets

Puck lights be be regretted in the future. They will not last as long as advertised. And the color of leds shift over time. So even if you can find the same model puck for replacement, the color temp will look different than the older ones.

Do you require any type of vapour barrier between the back of the lights and the Attic insulation? How is the light hole sealed off from the attic space?

    • @StudPack

No vapor barrier required in Louisiana Joel. The light is gasketed but how much of a seal IDK.
