I was born in NYC, and my parents are Dominicans. My 1st language was Spanish and I lived 8 years in Santo Domingo as a little girl; however, I was very americanized. I married a wonderful black American man, and it's been the best thing that's happened to me. In 9 years, we'll be retiring together and traveling the world and maybe settling back in the DR, possibly in Samana as our main residence.

Some Black Americans and White Americans are ignorant to the fact, there are a lot of Black Spanish speaking people in Cuba, Puerto Rico, Dominican Republic, Panama, Colombia, Honduras, etc.
True is because for some reason Americans think that Hispanics is a race when is not is an ethnicity and unlike Mexico and South American the Dominican republic is predominantly biracial the grand majority of it citizens are biracial also the country is super diverse which I love
@@lilzim9559 Mexico and South America are largely biracial as well but they are more mestizo- meaning a mix of indigenous and European than black and European like many Caribbean Latinos as well as Venezuelans Colombians Panamanians, Nicaraguans and Hondurans

Four years ago, when I first met my (now) Dominican wife in her country, we communicated with Google translator, made up sign language, whistles, raised eyebrows, etc.
For a newcomer looking at us... They probably thought "What in the world?..."
But... We made it work!
Fast forward, we both learned a lot of the other's language and now we speak in English/Spanish, Spanish/English and we do fine.
As far as the culture compromise, I agree 100%. Both cultures can benefit from each other. Food, music, traditions and just overall attitude (underrated!).
We use each other's food and spices and create some really good meals! For example, she now loves red pepper and Old Bay seasoning when we cook most kinds of seafood.
We can hook up some beans too. I tought her about smoked turkey necks. LOL

My wife Dominican and its absolutely critical to accept and be interested in her culture. It always amazes me when Americans bring Dominicans over, or any foreign women, to the USA and expect them to totally FORGET their culture when in all honesty their culture was the reason why they were attracted to them in the first place!

Nice! My wife is Dominican and from Azua as well and only speaks Spanish but ive been fluent in the language for a long time. Learned in the streets of North Philly. Been around the Dominican culture so I know all the bachateros, the food and more. Philly has a huge Dominican population and they came in droves over the last 15 years. I tell my friends all the time if you become fluent in Spanish the dialect you speak depends on culture you learn it from. But yeah in Philly I was in them Dominican bars heavy!

I went to the D.R. For the first time last year. I a so fell in love! Something so magical about that place, now my husband and I are in the early talks about moving there once he retires! We are planning to be there next Spring for vacation, I miss it so much!
