It might seem like a small issue for now, but once the ban takes effect, thousands of jobs will be lost, and farms will lose significant revenue. A loss from R861.61 million to R247.34 million is not small. Let's hope there won't be any retaliation and that the South African government finds alternative markets for their exports.
Botswana and South Africa have a strong relationship, the fact that Botswana govt is encouraging self dependence by promoting farming by their own farmers should not be misunderstood.

There is no trade war between the two. Botswana is a small economy that cannot go to war with a large economy like RSA. BW is a highly dependent on SA for a number of imports and companies running the retail space. RSA basically runs the BW economy now the country needs to develop its own industries and not depend on RSA for small things such as vegetables. This due to the realization after COVID experience. Pushing the trade war narrative is wrong. Please get your facts right before peddling misinformation.

Understand that RSA is heavily invested in BW with a lot of business in various sectors operating there. Let me reiterate there is no trade war. The narrative you are trying to push is false and ignore the fact that BW is a sovereign nation that needs to be self sufficient and is working to diversify economy from reliance on diamond mining. Besides a nation cannot depend on others for basic commodities such as food items. Of course they are under pressure from industry players who are affected by specific bans but Africa is a large continent they must find new markets for their produce.

Those trade laws under SACU were meant to favour RSA.
Besides, Namibia has also followed suit on banning fruits and vegs from RSA.

In my country SA, there's a serious influential brand called PROUDLY South African. Why ? To encourage Entrepreneur to produce locally and also encourage South Africans to buy locally.

What if White farmers one day decide to save enough food for themselves and not plant for about ten two years or more. It took south African farmers more than 100 years to be good at farming, with a lot of farmers getting incentives from the government running the country at the time. Let Batswana learn to be self sufficient. The mentality of being a consumer and not a producer is what has been depriving Batswana to realise they too can reach their own potential. Israel and Botswana's climatic conditions are similar that farming wouldn't be looked as something viable. Yet the Israelites have found means to make agriculture work for them. If you cross the border between Botswana and South Africa in certain points you will realise across the border South Africa is Green and Botswana is brown. Its not that the land is not good in Botswana, just lack of knowledge, perseverance and financial assistance.
