Help! What am I doing wrong? When I apply the alcohol ink to my prepped tumbler the alcohol ink eats the paint. I use 2x rustolium and Tim Holtz alcohol ink.
Is your paint dry when you apply the alcohol ink? I’ve never had an issue with the ink reacting with the paint before, so that’s the only reason I can think of.

Came across this video...and it has definitely motivated me to try my first epoxy tumbler. Do you have a list of materials needed to complete this ? I don't want to miss anything needed. I also saw the prepping video. That was easy...can you help with the list? 😊
@@DIYAlex ok one more question! Lol what can I do about fish eyes? I wash cup, wipe with alcohol, spray paint it....then I get fisheyes...do I need to put a clear coat over the spray paint or something?
Love this! I’m making one of these tomorrow. I want to put a decal on the cup though. Should I put a thin coat of epoxy on then the decal? Or can I just put the decal straight onto the wood grain then coat it with epoxy?
I did this same method but when I sprayed my sealer it made the alcohol ink run and it also made the white run from my prepped tumbler. I used the same as yours. Can you tell me what I may have done wrong?
Hmm that's interesting. Try doing a really light coat of acrylic spray. No need to go super heavy with your spray :). The only other thing I can think of is that the alcohol ink and base coat may not be completely dry. It usually dries quickly, but sometimes with high humidity it might be take longer than usual.
Thank you so much!!! I bought Krylon Kamar Varnish and sprayed that first then my sealer and seemed to have worked. I have it spinning now. I don’t have social media or I would tag you.
The greenish tint can be due to the color of alcohol ink reacting with the epoxy. Try using a different color for your wood grain. Do you prep you tumblers before adding ink? That may help with fish eyes.
@@DIYAlex Mine does this as well. I've tried twice-following these instructions and it's fish-eyed both times! Very frustrating. Not sure what I'm doing wrong? I've used Teexpert epoxy and Krylon clear acrylic .
Great Video! How much epoxy do you use for the tumblers ? I am working on 32 oz and 24 oz tumblers. I am afraid of using too much. Is it a different measurement for different sizes ? And how many coats ? Thank You!
No you'll spray paint first. If you're talking about the prep stage, then no you want to sand and paint before epoxy. If you mean the layer of clear acrylic spray, then you'll spray the alcohol ink to seal it in and then epoxy.
I can’t wait to try it! Thanks for the tutorial. If you wanted to add vinyl to it, would you want to epoxy the alcohol ink first and then do your vinyl, or is that not necessary?
You're welcome! Yes, you would epoxy it first and then add your vinyl decal and then more epoxy. Alcohol ink is easily pulled off by transfer tape so that's why I would stick to that order of things. :)
Well that looks so simple and fun
It was!!! -Lindsay
Thank you!!
So if you want vynl on it you do they before the spray and epoxy right?
You can apply vinyl in between layers of epoxy.

I figured i would try this for the first time after watching your video and i think for my first one it came out pretty good
Great! I'm glad it turned out well!
Why does my alcohol ink come off when I brush over it. Does it have to be painted first before I start?
Yes, it needs to be painted first.
I’ve tried 3 times and the epoxy won’t stick it keeps separating and sliding off cup… what can I be doing wrong???
The epoxy needs a better surface to stick to. Try a clear coat of acrylic sealer on the cup before epoxying.
This was such a great video I am new to tumblers . I am 78 and need simple instuctions which you did. Thank you for this video
I'm so glad it was helpful!
Why is the black alcohol ink turning reddish as I am applying it?
Some look different when they're applied. Try a black from another brand.
But why did it turn yellow, it was so beautiful before hand
It didn't turn yellow in person.
I just did my first tumbler using your videos
Yay! I’m so glad! How did it go?
@@DIYAlex pretty good how do I send you a photo of it

I have tried this and when I epoxy it it keeps getting fisheyes. what am I doing wrong?
The surface probably needs more grip. Have you sealed with clear spray before epoxy?

You can download my epoxy supply list here: diyalex.com/epoxy-supply-list/
Wouldn't the acrylic spray seal in the in to prevent it being pulled off from transfer tape?
There is a layer of epoxy over the alcohol ink, so transfer tape won’t mess it up ☺️
Ok , now when would I be able to put the waterslide on the cup? Before or after epoxy?
You need to apply a layer of epoxy first before using waterslide.
@@DIYAlex ok one more question! Lol what can I do about fish eyes? I wash cup, wipe with alcohol, spray paint it....then I get fisheyes...do I need to put a clear coat over the spray paint or something?
You shouldn’t. Did you sand it before spray painting? That may help with it!
I love this video, thank you
You’re welcome!
Can you prep with acrylic paint to do woodgrain??
yes, if you prefer acrylic over spray paint that's fine too.
Can I use Krylon Triple-Thick Crystal Clear Glaze spray instead of Rust-oleum Gloss Clear Spray?
You sure can!
@@DIYAlex thank you!
Do you put the decal on before or after the epoxy
After. The whole process is in the video.
Question. What material is the white roller you put the tumbler turner on to roll after you put epoxy on?
I think you're seeing the pool noodle on the end of my tumbler arm.
I wish I only ever had orders for ink tumblers!
I hear you! They're so easy!
Why did the tumbler turn green when you sprayed it?
It didn't turn green.
I can’t wait to test it
It's so much fun! I think you're going to love it!
Love this! I’m making one of these tomorrow. I want to put a decal on the cup though. Should I put a thin coat of epoxy on then the decal? Or can I just put the decal straight onto the wood grain then coat it with epoxy?
Coat it with epoxy, let it cure, then add your decal and another coat of epoxy on top.
@@DIYAlex Hi! What will happen if I don't coat an epoxy?
do i have to base paint my tumbler white?
No, you can pick any color you want!
When I sealed the alcohol ink it turned somewhat greenish and the ink started to run and fade. I'm using Rust-oleum painter's touch 2x ultra cover.
Some ink colors do that under epoxy. Try a different ink color.
This was definitely easy for those of us that want to start
It seriously is! There’s not a lot of tricks to it!
How many coats of epoxy do you need on a woodgrain? If our first coat is perfect, no bumps or anything, do we need a second for any reason? Thank you!
After you add a decal, you should do a second coat of epoxy. If you're not adding a decal then I wouldn't add another coat.
If I want to add a waterslide do you acrylic, epoxy, waterslide epoxy or can I put my waterslide on the acrylic then epoxy?
Here’s a tutorial for how to do Waterslide decals! ruclips.net/video/zDX9UK3Zd70/видео.html
I just love watching your tutorials! You make it easier for me, so Thank you so very much.
Thanks Debby! I'm so glad they help!
Can I use modpodge spray acrylic sealer?
I haven't tried that myself, but I believe it will work!
DIY Alex thank you!
Do you put vinyl if you want it before epoxy or a layer of epoxy then vinyl and more epoxy
I recommend a layer of epoxy before adding any decals so your transfer tape doesn’t remove any of the ink.
How long should you let the alcohol ink dry before putting epoxy?
It will dry crazy fast! As soon as it's dry you can seal it and start with epoxy.
Why did the sealer give it a green tint?
I didn't notice a green tint after sealing. It's more likely a difference in the lighting I was using.
What kind of brush do you use for the wood grain?
I like to use a paint brush with a straight edge at the bottom, but just about any paint brush will do.

Is it on gloss or flat paint?
Looks like gloss..
It is glossy but that doesn’t make much difference. ☺️
Do you put the epoxy on before you paint the alcohol ink on ?
No epoxy after alcohol ink
When before you epoxy do you have to do a gloss coat or can you just epoxy? If you don't use the clear coat will it mess up the ink?
I always recommend a coat of acrylic sealer so you don't risk re-activating the alcohol ink.
Love it 😍
Thanks!!
Do you add decal before epoxy
No, I add the epoxy over the alcohol ink and then do the decal, and finish it with a second layer of epoxy.
After the sealer dries do you lightly sand so the epoxy has something to hold onto?
You can, but you don’t have to.
Wow, looks so realistic and so easy! Are the acrylic sealer and epoxy food safe though? If be worried about lips touching the side of the cup...
The acrylic sealer gets covered by the epoxy. Several epoxy brands are FDA compliant, so most folks have no issues with it.
You can also use a straw and never touch the top of the tumbler :)
Hi! My epoxy keeps fish eyeing after I put the sealer. Any tips? I’m so irritated 😖
Hmm that's interesting. What brand of sealer and what brand of epoxy are you using?
Mine does too. Im using art resin & krylon varnish, not only fish eyeing but turning green??

Is it 70% Rubbing alcohol?
I use 91%, but 70% will work too.
How long did you let it turn after applying epoxy? Also did you just epoxy one time?
I let it spin until it wasn’t tacky anymore. This video might answer more of your questions: ruclips.net/video/fPfIHQQnN9Y/видео.html

Do we add epoxy once done?
Yes! Epoxy first before adding the decal.

No you'll spray paint first. If you're talking about the prep stage, then no you want to sand and paint before epoxy. If you mean the layer of clear acrylic spray, then you'll spray the alcohol ink to seal it in and then epoxy.
DIY Alex okay great, thank you!!!!

This looks so easy! I love it. But is the base coat glossy? I thought for a wood grain with alcohol inks it had to be flat.
My base coat is glossy. I don’t see any reason why it would need to be flat because the epoxy is going to make it appear glossy anyway.
@@DIYAlex When I put my alcohol inks on the are sticky... is there a reason why???

DIY Alex how long would you wait once you used epoxy before adding vinyl. Or even if vinyl is not being added. How long does it take to cure?
Did you mix your epoxy with the 2 parts or did you use that one you mentioned in your other videos that you can just pour on without mixing
I used regular epoxy that you mix at a 1:1 ratio ☺️. I was off the screen while mixing so I cut that part out. Good question!
You don’t have to seal it before epoxy. I haven’t and mine look amazing.....
I wouldn't want to risk re-activating the alcohol ink. But I'm glad it works for you!
I thought sanding was needed on every tumbler before epoxy is put on?
