The father is pkayed by Jerry Orbach (RIP) a NY stagecavd TV legend. He starred in several Law & Order series, getting his own spin-off shortly before he passed. There is a street in Manhattan partially named after him. He also provided the speaking and singing voice of Lumiere in Disney's animated Beauty and the Beast.
Next, Road House starring Patrick Swayze. It's this film on steroids. Less dancing, far more action, and not a period piece.

Yep. Plus, he's so naive and insecure in some aspects, especially about his social status. At first, when he was a bit younger, he might have felt like the women actually liked him for real, only to find out pretty quickly that it was just about sex for them and that they would never see him as an actual romantic prospect because he's 'beneath' them. No wonder he's openly antagonistic towards Baby at the start of the movie. He thinks she's seeing him in that same light, except he'll get into big trouble if he hooks up with her, because they're not allowed to do that with the daughters.

Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey had worked together on the movie Red Dawn, and it was a tough shoot and they got on each other's nerves and didn't get along very well with each other. When they were both cast in Dirty Dancing, they didn't like each other, but working on all the dance training together restored their real-life friendship. Swayze was a trained dancer - his mother ran a dance studio - but Jennifer didn't have any formal dance training and had to do a lot of work to learn for the movie.

The movie is a representation to the old highly popular summer vacation spots in upstate New York, particularly the Catskills. Very predominantly Jewish and they usually traveled from New York City/the Burroughs. There are loads of documentaries on RUclips about that whole era of the 50's & 60's at those resorts. Those were peak "Americana" times.

0:04 This is great! One of my favorite movies of all time, one of the greatest soundtracks of all time.
The only reason I like this movie so much, when I was 8 years old, my family took a vacation, my uncle had one of those Vans with the little 13-in TV and VCR combo, and the only tape anybody thought to bring for the kids to watch was dirty dancing.
So on a 2-week vacation, when the parents wanted the kids distracted in the back while they were driving, we watched dirty dancing on loop.
Probably not the best film to be showing on repeat to 8-year-olds... It definitely influenced me, you don't know how many mountain resorts I've taken over through dance.

I don’t think she GOT what this movie is supposed to represent at all.!!! Sorry!!! Like when she made a little snide comment when Jonny was telling Baby how he’d been treated by the wealthy women there. He was a young, naive boy at the start with all these older women pretending to care, just to get him into bed. It is possible for that to happen to boys you know!!!

    • @ComradeLuxemburg
      @ComradeLuxemburg 4 месяца назад +1

She seemed to miss the classism element of the film in particular. We hear a lot these days about power dynamics and I think this situation is a good example - older, moneyed, well-connected women taking advantage of men whose jobs are on the line. I'm a little disappointed at the 'men always want it' laugh-it-off attitude displayed here, but Dasha is young i suppose.

I didn't think it was all that possible, I mean, Dasha has done so very well in viewing movies that call upon it's audience to hold nostalgia for "The Good Ol' Days" however, I am at fault here, it never occurred to me just how much of this movie relies upon it's viewers to be familiar with Americana, the American Culture from post WW2 America to the mid-late 80's when the film was released, in order for the movie to have it's intended impact that so many found so endearing and touching. In short, Dasha "didn't get it", however, I don't think I'm going too far out on a limb to say that one day, Dasha might re-watch this movie and she'll "get it".

These types of places were extremely popular family resorts in the early 20th century until the 70s on up. The Catskills and Poconos. An entire (upper class) family would vacation there for a few weeks in the summer. Activities for kids and adults everywhere. A theme in this film is that these places knew they were going to change and eventually become obsolete. The film takes place in '63, before the big social upheaval and counter-culture movement (spurred by the Vietnam War) began in the late 60's.

An interesting fact that very few people know because they seemed to have such great chemistry together, but in truth Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey didn't get along at all on the set of this movie. A large part of the problem was that Patrick was a professionally trained dancer. Jennifer Grey had no training at all and Swayze was incredibly frustrated by this. It caused a lot of tension on the set. Jennifer Grey has said in recent interviews that she believes that the tension between Patrick and herself was what made it seem like they had such great chemistry together.

The summer I was 12, my family worked a dude ranch. For me, it was easy work, take guests on a trail ride every day. There was a dance held for staff at the end of the summer. I had developed a crush on the girl I worked with and she wouldn't dance with me, or anyone else. I left, dejected. My mother told me that minutes after I left, the girl's real (and much older) boyfriend showed up and they danced like crazy. Some tourists are terrible. A mouthy New Yorker caused trouble for me and my co-worker (the afore mentioned girl) because we went out armed and he felt guns should be in the hands of adults, not children. Possible hazards we could encounter were bears (had an encounter with one) and snakes (didn't see any).

The strangest thing about all of this is Jennifer grey destroyed her popularity and her marketability by getting a nose job!! She personally didn't like her nose but it was the main feature people recognized her by and it sure as hell didn't make her ugly but she must have thought it did. She got a nose job and dropped off the map!!!

Dasha, if you want "cringe" you might laugh a bit about another film Patrick Swayze is in called "Red Dawn". It's an 80s film about the Soviet Union invading the United States. I'm sure you'd be correcting all the actors and what they are saying versus what they were supposed to be saying. The Cold War was an interesting time in history, but you might like the movie. Jennifer Grey also stars in Red Dawn. If you want a more action-based film to see Patrick in, look no further than "Point Break" which also stars Keanu Reeves.
I'm glad you liked this film because it shows a time in our history that doesn't really exist anymore. Families don't really do things like this anymore. It's as bygone as the car Patrick Swayze drove in this film. Very rare.

I always said, back in day there were always two "girl" movies that the boys liked too. Dirty Dancing and Pretty Woman

Am I the only one on this planet that has realised that although the movie is set in the 1950s the main song at the end is played mainly on synthesisers and definitely not a 1950s style of music?
Please let me know if you've noticed this.

If you like movies that show a great representation of a particular time and place, you should definitely check out “The Last Picture Show,” a great movie set in the early 1950s in small town Texas.
