Amazing….and as a musician I’d like to point out something else that’s lost these days. The art of improvisation. These guys put themselves out there. They weren’t afraid to make mistakes. They weren’t afraid to not sound exactly like the record. This is master class stuff folks…..
Yeah, it's all pretty cut and dried these days. You can thank the endless quest for digital perfection, auto tune, beat detective, Cutting and pasting without playing the song all the way through. If you do that long enough, the next generation won't have the faintest idea how to improvise. Most people are used to being micromanaged and told what to do from womb to tomb anyway. ......I think real jamming and improvisation would scare most people nowadays.
@@jpalberthoward9 that shit sounds sterile! Thank god they recorded some real improvisional music before it’s gone forever! Yup exactly what is happening to this great music
@@mjwolosz9224 to my ears, it's ridiculous, monotonous robot noise. It never changes tempo, there are no breaks, no key changes no bridges, no solos, no instruments except for the same digital keyboard presets on every song (?) What do you call this stuff anyway? And the same canned beat on all of it. Now, take "we can work it out" from the Beatles. It has 3 different time signatures and a key change within a 3&1/2 minute song. Within that short time span, it takes you on a little musical journey, and back home again like a good composition should do. If they heard this drivel that passes for music today, I think Duane and the boys would probably either laugh or throw up.

That sound Duane makes from 6:05 to 6:40 is why he is an all time great...it's insane...it's like he is rising from the dead in a swamp ..I just wish the camera was on him during that.... unbelievable!
@@briantaylor2.023 and waltz. Their songs in 3/4 time are steeped deeply in southern culture. Dreams takes me to a grand ballroom of Beau's and Belle's. Just fantastic.
Duane playing slide was like listening to someone’s soul singing, without boundaries or inhibitions. He gave the electric guitar a human voice, a human soul. Whether he was shrieking, or mourning, or announcing his youthful manhood with a kind of swaggering exuberance that was all his own, he sang to all of us thru that instrument, for the ages.
The title "Dreams" fits and encompasses the music so well. When Duane gets into the slide, I feel like a bird soaring in my dreams. Flying like an eagle through some canyons with power and mystique. This song just takes me. The Brothers sure know how to bring it right to the heart.
Gorgeous song, so well played. Duanes solo is beautiful, Oakley's bass lines are glorious yet subtle, and those drummers. Trucks and Jaimoe were the best double kit team ever. Better IMAO than Kreutzmann/Hart
This is so beautiful. To die so young was such a terrible tragedy. He took so much with him. R.I.P. Duane and Greg and so many other incredible musicians.
You get 'em Skydog!!! Nobody has EVER topped your unique style (and slide, omg) and talent!!!. Your music has kept me (almost) sane for over 40 years!!!
Amen to that. If you haven't already heard it, see if you can find John Coltrane's version of "My Favorite Things" it's also a triplet 3/4 time feel, and Coltrane takes a very ordinary show tune from "The Sound of Music" and transforms it into something that Rogers and Hammerstein would never have dreamed of in a million years. If you play it, and then listen to "in Memory of Elizabeth Reed" back to back, you'll be pleasantly surprised. You might notice a whole other level of Allman Brother genius. The boys definitely had large ears and well tuned radar.
These 6 young men were creating a part of American culture and history . Arguably , the Allman Brothers Band were the start of a whole new type of music . American art and a new way of looking at The Blues and the South's, African , American heritage . Rock and Roll had its roots in the South , and ABB made it pure .

I absolutely love this song. Noticing Gregg's mic was too low was heartbreaking.
They had a technical glitch. This was supposed to have aired on PBS, but because of the mic issue on this (and the first sing of the set), it didn't.
I agree! Bad sound men!
@@steved.1556 not the sound men just equipment failing :P
I am heart broken 😞 This this is my favorite ABB song! 😢
Vocals come in on the last verse
I’m don’t speak English but when listen this song I’m really feeling so good
In this tune, all that matters is the sound, and Duane Allman, the master of the slide guitar.
Hung up on dreams Ill never see-- but hopefully I do
"I hunger for the drams I'll never see"
Amazing….and as a musician I’d like to point out something else that’s lost these days. The art of improvisation. These guys put themselves out there. They weren’t afraid to make mistakes. They weren’t afraid to not sound exactly like the record.
This is master class stuff folks…..
Yes those days are gone there is no one left?
Yup master class stuff never to be repeated.sadly
If they heard this drivel that passes for music today,
I think Duane and the boys would probably either laugh or throw up.
such concentration and soul put in by everyone RIP Duane, Greg, Berry, Butch and now Dickey Thanks for the fantastic music saw them many times at the Warehouse in New Orleans
pure brilliance and passion. RIP Duane , Berry, Butch and Gregg
... Lamar, Woody, Dan...
The '71 Filmore show puts this song to shame, best live version ever
I am grateful that we have these videos so available. Watching Duane play is amazing. I know the video was filmed in 1970, but when a guitarist is playing a solo, I would focus on the guitar - the entire guitar - where Duane is creating the amazing magic.
Cameramen and video editors to this day rarely have a clue about how to focus on the soloist. Diane is ripping and they show Dickey. Very irritating .
I agree with you but watching Duane's full perspective he looks just like an angel.
Cameraman sucks
This one song along with the live performance has more value than just about everything that was on the radio from 2010-2020 combined.
Man! We miss you, Allman Brothers. Rest in Peace, fellas. This world wouldn't be what is is had there not been ABB.
THANK YOU. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Thank you Dickey, Butch, Barry, Duane, Gregg, Jaimo, Warren Haynes, Derek Trucks and everyone else who made up ABB over the years. Thank you.
Amen brother!
And I was 5 years and 1 day old for Fillmore East...Born, bred and raised on this music---Blessed...Thank You, Daddy! Thank you and God Bless ABB...especially Duane, Gregg and Butch...Jamming in Heaven for sure with Daddy!
As I was also born in 1964 / my father played this stuff and I love it !!!
How could I have forgotten how much I LOVED this band in the day? I had all the albums but stuff like this is magical compared to what we had then and oh so very welcomed
I NEVER GOT TIRED OF ABB I LISTEN TO THEM EVERY DAY ! SOME OF MY FRIENDS THINK I'M CRAZY .
Best band ever, top to bottom
That sound Duane makes from 6:05 to 6:40 is why he is an all time great...it's insane...it's like he is rising from the dead in a swamp ..I just wish the camera was on him during that.... unbelievable!
One of the best phycadelic jams of all times! Is it blues, jazz, rock? It is simply the genius of The Allman Brothers!! RIP brother Greggg,
It’s a healthy mix of Blues, Southern Rock, and Psychedelic Rock
@@briantaylor2.023 and waltz. Their songs in 3/4 time are steeped deeply in southern culture. Dreams takes me to a grand ballroom of Beau's and Belle's. Just fantastic.
Duane playing slide was like listening to someone’s soul singing, without boundaries or inhibitions. He gave the electric guitar a human voice, a human soul.
Whether he was shrieking, or mourning, or announcing his youthful manhood with a kind of swaggering exuberance that was all his own, he sang to all of us thru that instrument, for the ages.
Mr. Zen says the best version is what you think the best version is today. And that’s the Truth. Thank you. Sweet sorrow.
The title "Dreams" fits and encompasses the music so well. When Duane gets into the slide, I feel like a bird soaring in my dreams. Flying like an eagle through some canyons with power and mystique. This song just takes me. The Brothers sure know how to bring it right to the heart.
That TONE. It's just.... No words
Best band I've ever seen play live. Blows every other group away!!
Yup by far
I know Gregg"s mic failed but damn what an incredible instrumental then....
Duane is the greatest slide guitartist of all time.
Miss music like this..
I got to see this live for my 13th birthday. I had no idea what my Aunt took me to see and left a changed human being.
Bless her heart.
Oh wow!!!!! Best Aunt!
I'm sure you left changed... Who wouldn't??
What an Aunt!
Wow. She loved you to bits.
You were blessed You have a wonderful aunt ❤️
Duane's playing at 3:17 is just pure soul coming out through his guitar. So beautiful.
@James,
I felt it... as though something deep inside my pelvis needs to be released.
Did he switch to slide because I thought I was hearing a violin
Gorgeous song, so well played. Duanes solo is beautiful, Oakley's bass lines are glorious yet subtle, and those drummers. Trucks and Jaimoe were the best double kit team ever. Better IMAO than Kreutzmann/Hart
Duane's solo in this song is amazinggg!!!!
Fuck what a great time. Such a great band. They just clicked as a group.
Absolutely Amazing.
One of the Best. We miss all of you Guys So Very Much!
This is so beautiful. To die so young was such a terrible tragedy. He took so much with him. R.I.P. Duane and Greg and so many other incredible musicians.
This reminds me of the devotional Sufi music that came out of Pakistan.
You get 'em Skydog!!! Nobody has EVER topped your unique style (and slide, omg) and talent!!!. Your music has kept me (almost) sane for over 40 years!!!
Same here! I truly wonder how different our world would be, if Duane had lived to a ripe old age...
I can listen to this on repeat. No one speaks though they’re guitar like this.
The 3/4 time signature and tempo of Dreams is such a fantastic treat. A Southern rock Waltz.
Arguably , the Allman Brothers Band
were the start of a whole new type of music . American art and a new way of looking at The Blues and the
South's, African , American heritage . Rock and Roll had its roots in the South , and ABB made it pure .
Anyone that argues with that has a problem. lol NO ONE ever approached (this style of music) The ABB at their best in this period.
I'd call this blues-jazz fusion. Their own unique style. Incomparable.
Link Wray, a Native American, started the Power Chord for the likes of Pete Townsend and Jim Hendrix; a parallel movement.
How many bands sound better live than a recording studio? The real deal ABB. Thanks for all the memories bro's and still get choked up listening 50 years later...look after one another up there, blessings.
This is the ABB and Duane at his best. No one comes close to Skydog's sound....my favorite guitar player of all time. I was a very small child when he passed, but always loved his playing after hearing it. Gone too soon, RIP Skydog...Gregg, Berry and Butch too.
SOULJAHZ ROCKERZ
This music is timeless and hits home. I could not imagine being part of this type of magic at such a young age. These men…this group….was meant to be.
I really wish this recording was on the Fillmore East album..... this is the best rendition of Dreams that I can find
Agree. I only play this one ...over and over again.
Listen to their 71 version from San Francisco. It about 12 mins and Duane soars above the fret board and makes his own notes, simply amazing
The version on Fillmore west in 71 is haunting
SUNY Stonybrook 9.19.71.
I’m not sure a more beautiful live performance of Duane exists. This is a portrayal of him at the absolute height of his powers!
RIP Duane.
I'll stick my neck out here and say I believe it was Greg's voice and that alone that made this sound so special, he had the blues.
And Duane had nothing to do with it? And the TWO drummers? And Dickie Betts? The bass player?...
