In this ADVANCED ROTOSCOPING tutorial I will show you how to use Adobe After Effects and mocha AE to insert a TV into a complex dolly shot, behind your moving actors.
If you want to follow along with this tutorial, you can download the clips I use here:
www.surfacedst...
Mocha AE is included for free in Adobe After Effects and in the last tutorial I covered how to use the fantastic planar tracker to perform basic rotoscoping.
In most scenarios however, you will likely come up against more complex scenarios: moving actors, non-planar objects, multiple occlusions and more.
In those cases you need to dig a little bit deeper into the toolbox and mocha AE can greatly help you simplify this task.
In this tutorial I will show you how to use mocha AE for some advanced rotoscoping work.
I will assume that you have watched my basic rotoscoping tutorial already. If not, you can find it here:

Thank you Tobias. This one is by far the best of you!. You and Andrew Kramer are best two channels for Advanced AE learning. You guys clearly stated the power of AE, as other's are more on the titles and transitions. Please do bring more advanced stuff like this.
Thank you very much, it's pretty amazing to be named next to Aaaaaaaaandrew Kramer :) Glad to hear you enjoyed the tutorial. I do want to make more advanced stuff too, but I have to skill up myself first
Welcome :) Cheers!
breaking it down into multiple pieces instead of one actually makes so much sense, never thought about it before, thank you!
:D Glad to hear you found it useful! Working on a new tutorial for Mocha AE that I'm hoping to get out soon - this one's a little ancient haha!
The way you said "fun" really got me 😂 knowing how much tiring it is to sit for hours masking out the required elements.
One of the Best Tutorials On RUclips to date. Tobias, you are so good at what you do! Thank you so much for taking the time and energy to share such wonderful tutorials.
No worries at all, glad to hear you're enjoying them! :) Thank you for the comment!
You and Andrew Kramer are the best visual artists I've ever seen
+Kill3rtorch Don't know whether I'd call myself an artist so much as a ... 'tinkerer', but i appreciate the comment :)
Thank you so much, T! This is a great tutorial; cool tips and tricks along the way, decent detail with step-by-step specifics where needed, and it still runs at a fast enough pace that you don't get overwhelmed or bogged down with the insane amount of work that goes into high quality rotoscoping.
Thank you for the awesome feedback, glad to hear I seem to be on the right track :D All the best!
I enjoyed this video and would love to see more of After Effects tutorials with Mocha.
Thank you! Be sure to check out my new Mocha AE tutorial playlist here :) ruclips.net/video/rgwFQDWOKgs/видео.html
This channel has the best VFX tutorials on all of RUclips. Thanks so much Tobias! (And Walter)
U make some of the highest quality tutorials on the internet, keep it up bro .
Thanks man, glad to hear you're enjoying them!
I was expecting this not to be useful, but it was great! Thanks.
:D Glad to hear!

Awesome! You're the man. Thanks again
No worries!
fantastically informative tutorial. this was the first thing I did in mocha and im so proud of myself for sitting down for 2-3 hours following along! thanks my man :)
You are very welcome :) Mocha can be a bit tricky at first, but it's a really useful tool to create a whole slew of awesome effects and I do use it quite a lot. I'm still not a master at it, but the more you practice the better you get I guess :)
Surfaced Studio for sure! I can’t wait to become familiar with it
Absolutely AMAZING video!!
Glad you liked it :D
I love your talking stale it is very nice and it is very easy to understand anyone. Thanks buddy.
No worries :)

After Effects taught by a fish. What's not to like? :D
TY FOR PROVIDING TO THE GREAT PROMISE.
No worries!
When i open Mocha it says new project, but dosen' have my clip, what do i do?
Import your clip :) If it's saying not supported make sure you install Quicktime (the codec, not the player)
Can you do a tutorial on how to remove people that move more in Mocha with rotoscoping? Because now the persons were not that challenging moving yet
THIS TUTORIAL IS SO FRIGGING EXCITING!!!!
+Starius2 At close to 40 minutes of rotoscoping i'm not sure if you're being sarcastic :D
Surfaced Studio but you said yourself it was exciting.... you werent lying now, WERE YOU??
+Starius2 I NEVER LIE :D
Surfaced Studio EXACTLY! SO GET EXCITED!!!!!!!! TUTORIAL RAVE PARTY!

Killer job. Thank you. I know people are posting smart ass comments, but this was really helpful.
Thank you so much for the feedback and the support :)
Clear, concise, and understandable. Even for me who just got AE and Mocha 2 days ago. Thank you!
Thank you for the awesome feedback, great to hear you enjoyed the tutorial!
Thanks for all the hard work! I need as much help reducing the amount of time I spend rotoscoping!
+dankdreamz Once you get a good hang of Mocha, it'll greatly cut that time down. It's becoming my preferred method in most cases :)
Thanks so much for this great tutorial. This is exactly what I needed for my current task!
Thank you for the comment :) Glad to hear you got something useful out of the video!
What a great tutorial, thank you very much! Helps me a lot in a project I´m working on

You're very welcome! Glad you enjoyed the tutorial!
@@SurfacedStudio all the work that I can perform In nuke and fusion that can I perform in after effects and premier pro?pls reply.
Another solution: Put Green in the TV - Done! HEHE
Nice tutorial, helped me out a lot!
Glad to hear it helped! Also, you still need to track the screen even if you put a green screen in there :)
Thanks for the tutorial, where it is possible to make a detailed hair rotoscoping besides "refine edge tool" in after effects
As far as I'm aware, the Refine Edge tool in AE is likely your best bet - rotoscoping hair is not something I specialise (or want to specialise) in :)
Surfaced Studio in AE it works slowly, and always gets off the mask, after a few frames, constantly restoring mask in manually
sorry for the english)
That is pretty hard job I have a project and I tried to rotoscope and the results were horrible..after working whole frustrating day I ended up with nothing..
You did great job 👍👍👍
What about the hole in the TV shadow?
That can be fixed up by simply tracking a fake shadow into the background :)
I understand it was for tutorial purposes, but practically speaking you could have just stuck a green cardboard inside the hole, skipping the need for the roto and the shadow replacement. Or if you went with the hole you could have used a practical light inside the hole lighting the actors giving a realistic glow with respect to physics and how light realistically bounces. Putting a light there would be a good reason for manual roto.
@@blackwhattack Or possibly just have a real TV with the footage playing and not need to do any rotoscoping. Great tutorial though. I haven't had any experience with Mocha yet, just watching the tutorials for when I get to it.
nice work bro, may be this is my frst vedio of yours made me to clap myself at the final.. thanku so much for clearing my doubts
Thank you for your comment, glad to hear you enjoyed it!
Best T shirt EVER!!!!
:D
hello i have a problem when i copy and paste the shape the mask dont follow the movement
Where can I buy it?
Hi thank you for this tutorial. How many hours did it take to you to rotoscope?
You have one beast of a pc that plays this backthis smoothly while recording the screen...
I do... speed * 10 also helps during editing ;)
Haha, I know... but even when you drag the mouse back and forth through the timeline it doesn't skip a frame! Mine would have skipped 98% lol
I often preview first (so it pre-renders the frames) and then 'scrub' :) But my computer can handle a fair bit before it slows down
Will stay tuned to your channal! Cheers!
👍
very cool, i have been out of the industry for quite some time. very neat. thank you.
Thank you for your comment :)
thank you! is a great help, but I don't know how to tracking the TV with elements overlapping. do you have other tutrial doing this?
I don't at the moment. Check out my basic tutorial for Mocha, that should give you a basic idea, then you just have to work around the overlaps
Congrats bro u reached 241k subs u r faster than Usain Bolt 9k only 9K left the fun is comming closer
great tutorial we need more please To overcome roto problems
Glad you liked it!
Fantastic tutorial as always.
Thank you sir.
No worries, glad you liked it!
that's what i need to learn, thanks man
No worries :)
Great tutorial thanks ! Unfortunately the tracker is off in a lot of places in my footage so I have no choice of having more keyframes ... Any idea why ? Thanks
Are there any non planar (meaning that it would track the legs as a 3d object rather than cardboards) that you know of and recommend? is this the standard way of this doing or are there more complex software to do it another way? anyway, your channel is amazing! thank you
Some advanced trackers allow you to '3D' track geometry onto footage, but I haven't had much experience with those, I think I've seen something like that in pfTrack - might be worth checking out :) And thank you!
Thank you very much for your easy to understand tutorials. But I ask myself, if it is also possible in this case, to put the screen as the top layer and use the rotomasks from mocha to cut out the shapes from the tracked screen overlay?
You can technically do a reversed track matte and have the screen on the top yes. It might make other things harder though, e.g. glowing the TV 'over' the elements in the foreground
Very cool, thanks for that demo!
No worries :)
This video may have saved my life!
great work 😊😊
Thank you :)
18:00 watched it 3 times now I get it thank you.
Glad to hear! Be sure to check my new series for Mocha AE - it’s hopefully a bit clearer :D
@@SurfacedStudio sure!
Really Awesome great tutorial Well... U explained all detailed secretes of rotoscoping thankyou .. And plz do tutorial about selecting fps or setting in software or detail explained abput video FPS guide captured from camera
I love this tutorial. Thanks
Thank you for the feedback :)
Good tutorial, thanks! Do you the keyboard shortcut to move to the next previous key frames :-)
It's CTRL + LEFT/RIGHT arrow on mine
hey so you would say that this is this best way to rotoscope? i rotoscope with the after affects tool before and its took forever and didnt come out that great. This seem to be a lot more simple. is this the more professional way to do it?
'Best' depends. Some may prefer the rotobrush too, some prefer masks, some prefer totally different software packages altogether. I do quite like using Mocha for most of my rotoscoping work :)
Surfaced Studio I see well I just have to find out what I like best then again thanks for your awesome feedback
WOW .... Absolutely fantastic 👍 Thank’s a lot ...you are my favorite
Thank you very much for the comment :)
sir
I m confused
is mocha ae for rotoscoping or camera tracking
coz we can do same thing using regular rotoscoping tool
btw what exactly winning edge of mocha rotoscoping over regular inbuilt roto of aft. eff.
thanx
amazing tutorial and thanks for the tips.
No worries :) Thanks for the comment!
very nice & clean tutorial! thx
Thank you :)
you doing amezing job, thank you so much, what a inspiration
You are very welcome, thank you for the comment :)
Hello. Why are you tracking with x-spline but not b-spline?
which is better and for what situations?
Great video! Is it possible to redo the tracking in Mocha after I've sent it to AE? For example if I do my mocha tracking and copy and paste it to AE during day 1, and during day 2 I notice that my tracking wasn't detailed enough. Do I have to redo all tracking or is it possible to send the tracking data from AE to Mocha and just fix the details?
Keep up the good job!
Mocha saves as a separate file so your track from day 1 is still in Mocha. Just make your adjustments and re-export from Mocha to AE with the fixes
Well done, thx very much for this Tutorial
No worries, glad you enjoyed it
At 33:13 you show the "TrkMat" setting but i can't find this in my Version (AE CC 2017) - do you know how i can use this function?
thanks in advance, Simon
Check this out :) ruclips.net/video/pdmXn7YH7VA/видео.html
Hey! I just subscribed. How did you do the tracked TV? I mean how did you edit it as an individual? Do I make sense? Thanks in advanced
+Superoior Radar Check out my tutorial on Mocha for Absolute Beginners - I covered it there :) it's slightly different here since TV vanishes at times but I hope to cover that as well in a future tutorial
Thanks :)
Amazing tutorial!!!! thank you so much!!!!
No worries :)
Awesome Tutorial! Make more!
Thank you :) There's new tutorials coming out every week
Well it was long, but I enjoyed it. Really cool stuff I can use sometime now.
+TheFruitofPassion Glad you enjoyed it :)
Hi. Thank you so much. In some cases I run into with this error a lot. could you please explain about this problem?
Hi, if you're new to Mocha be sure to check out my new beginner series for Mocha AE - I cover the basics, explain common issues and how to fix them :) ruclips.net/video/rgwFQDWOKgs/видео.html
Thank you for the tutorial, Tobias!
Regarding keyframe distance, would you still recommend trying to place them far apart for masking in AE as well?
No worries at all Brian. Yes I would :) In the end, all animation works better if you can minimise the amount of keyframes. Sometimes it's unavoidable, but where possible you tend to get better results by reducing them as much as you can :)
Thank you, Tobias. Have a great day!
Thank you, you too :D
Which software i use for hair rotoscoping???
That was great. Thank you.
:D Glad you enjoyed the tutorial!
why do you want to space out the keyframes? does it take less ram?
what are you pressing to add K frame?
I WANT YOUR SHIRT!!
very good tutorial thanks !
Thank you :)
Amazing and thank you Tobias
No worries :)
Superb tutorial.
Thank you!
Why am I watching this, I don't even have Mocha AE ._.
I think there's something strangely mesmerising about watching rotoscoping work... :D
I have Mocha AE, which came with AE when I installed 2018 - but I simply CANNOT open files in Mocha AE, the way shown in the tutorial, without an incompatibility error message :-(
Oh, and yes, I have made the frame rate the same etc
You may have to convert your footage. Mocha doesn't work with some file types.
David, OK. I'll give that a go. Thanks. I'm new to AE. ;-)
very useful tutorial. appreciate it. but as a question when i open mocha the way you mentioned the name and the frame rate of the clip i selected will not be appeared in mocha open up menu
This is a pretty old tutorial, I have lots of tasks on my todo list to refresh then with the new interface - should be much easier to use now and detect a lot of things automatically
any tips for rotoscoping around hands and fingers, especially ones that are moving?
Try to rotoscope all fingers individually. If the segments move a lot, you may have to create separate masks per finger segment as deforming them can be tricky :)
thanks! I'll try that!
Great tutorial! 👌
Thank you :)
lol i just started with MOCHA and i was correcting then masking "by hand", never know till now about "Paste Mocha Mask".
:D
thanks for lesson. how did you rotoscop TV screen?
I show how to track the screen in the basic roto tutorial
nice work, brother
Thanks man!
Hello, why my track mask doesn't works when I paste my shape data, the mask in ae doesn't move, it just gave me a mask for one frame, which part I missed?? thx so much
Very COOL man... Keep it up ;)
Thanks man!
Thank you for your tutorials! Question:
When moving my xspline further down the CTI I'm seeing 'TWO" spine outlines, a new spline node end where I moved it to, and the old placement. Like I'm seeing double.
Why is this? It's very annoying when trying to roto usiing my splines. Is there a toggle/switch I'm unaware of that will end this madness? :)
Thanks again! Love your approach and delivery. Very intelligent and effective instruction. Cheers ~
REPLY
mocha has selection tools for "inner" and "outer" and "both" which refer to the feathering of the mask. You may have inadvertently used one of these non-standard selection modes (basically creating a second copy, that you offset from the original spline). I think you want to select "B" for both.
Yes. A Boris Forum sent me a message similar to your explanation. Thank you!
I kept forgetting to select the Uber Key.
We dig the floating bowl of carrots!
Who wouldn't like airborne veggies?
One question when in MOCHA can't make a ROUNDED selection like you do with the mask in AE or PS?
Sure it can, you can use the Bezier spline tool. I do find the Bezier splines a bit fiddly though, but that's just me
Thx!
yes, even with x spline, just select the "handles" of the points, and drag in or out on the handle point, to smooth or sharpen the spline.
OHHHH SO CLOSE TO 200.000SUBS!!!!!
Still a bit to go, but we'll get there someday :)
hi i really like this tut i'm going to start a tv seri in my country how can you help me push it to the next level
Depends on what you want to do :) If you want to get into VFX (and aren't a pro already), check out my After Effects beginner series :)
When you exported the track data how did the TV layer was tracking the screen all of a sudden? I find it hard to believe that the tracking data extrapolated the layer's position without any user input in After Effects. Did I simply missed a step?
Check out my beginner tutorial for Mocha - ruclips.net/video/RevDN2fNGag/видео.html I explain how to track a screen in there and that's the technique I used
Awesome. Thank you!
Great tutorial!
Thank you!
Awesome, thanks!
