I've never managed to get Mocha data copy pasted onto a null in AE where it's smooth. For some reason the data always has bumpy shakes in it every time, no matter what I do. I've tried starting from the beginning of the clips, I've made sure the clip is at the same frame rate... :( sigh wish someone could solve this dammed annoyance for me. If you can... I'll think you're a God!
I love how you demonstrated real-world challenges to expect and how to deal with them. Great tutorial! Thanks for the great information. Keep being awesome!
Thank you for the comment :) I actually made a new version of the tutorial that you can find here if you're interested: ruclips.net/video/rgwFQDWOKgs/видео.html
I just started learning A.E and I must say your tutorials are helping me a lot. I watch your videos every day for a couple of weeks now and surely I have yet to watch them all. You are understandable, fast and precise at the important points, thnx to u I' ll soon reach an intermediate level. Thank you for all your effort!
Thank you so much for watching and for the awesome feedback. It's really nice to hear that my videos do help other people out and I really appreciate people taking the time to leave me comments :) Thank you and good luck!
I'd be really happy if you could make a tutorial about 3d tracking face and wearing a 3d mask such as ironman or maybe wearing a chestplate... I dont know if its possible in mocha but it would be a great!
Have you looked into the newish face tracker for after effects? If you wanted 3D as in reverse light ray tracing (like how digital 3D animated films are made) then know it will take a hell of a long time to render but it is possible with things like blender and the popularity of the program means there should be a lot of resources to show you how to do it.
Did anyone find a good solution to this? I was able to track a 3d head over my head using green screen and 3d camera tracker in AE and then exported that camera data into C4D where I added the 3d model. It seems to work ok, but I want to see a tutorial on something more like tracking an entire body to add 3d clothing etc. I'm guessing a full green screen suit with track markers would work, but has anyone tried it or made a tut?
I am SO excited to see this tutorial posted and I actually spent my lunch break to watch it. Mocha is very daunting but you have made it simple and approachable. Thank you! Please make more Mocha tutorials!
Thank you for the feedback :) There seems to be quite an interest in Mocha - and I myself have been using it more and more - so it seems HIGHLY likely that I'll make more tutorials for it :)
Thanks for clearly explaining the details rather than most of these "tutorial videos" on youtube that just tells you what to do step by step. Subscribed.
A big thumbs up for a big help Tobias :D in depth but still quick tutorial on Mocha for beginners. Video files for download really helped me quickly learn the concept here which otherwise was a headache to search or shoot for a similar video
Love your tutorials. New to AE and video production and I have watched a few of your videos. Enjoyed then all a lot. Love to see more in depth and/or advanced Mocha tutorials! Keep it up!
Thank you so much for the feedback. I've only recently started to integrate Mocha more and more into my workflow and really enjoying the tool. If there's interest I'll certainly be creating more advanced tutorials for it :)
Hi Tobias, Today I started tracking a big project I am working on with the use of mocha! everything went well, but when I selected the X-spline tool and clicked on the first point, nothing happened :( A solid was created and a green pin showed up , but I can't see the mask. What am I doing wrong? This looks like my problem: www.imagineersystems.com/forums/topic/2777/ I am using Mocha 4.0.2 and I use a macbook pro with 10.11.4 captain what should I do? ps. I would love more tutorials about mocha :D
Thank you so much for making this tutorial! I wasn't having a very satisfactory result using After Tracking Motion, and after trying a lot of things and researching a lot, I heard about Mocha and got to your video. I found amazing what Mocha can do! I got a much better result than with After. Almost perfect! You helped me a lot! Thank you so much!
You are very welcome, thank you very much for taking the time to leave this comment :) Mocha AE is pretty awesome and I really have to make some new tutorials for the latest version - there's so much cool stuff you can do with it!
Really, really, really helpful as an introduction to Mocha. Thank you Tobias! I would definitely like to see an advanced Mocha tutorial if you ever make one.
very well explained and you just don't teach the basics. you also teach how to solve problems. i liked also the street fight scene. Awesome. I'd like to see more advanced Mocha tutorials in near future. Thank you.
Awesome, thx a lot. Tracking often made me go crazy^^ Hope there will be detailed Mocha tutorials in the future ;) i especially think about the gopro camera distortion/fisheye, what i think is the biggest problem in tracking gopro material.
I think u just have to go to the effects thing and search for "lens" then you adjust something (I don't know what) and you can make it look like it wasn't recorded in an action cam sorry for not knowing what to adjust
Greetings Tobias. Off course when talking about AE, I always come back to you. I have what I thought was a simple task, tracking my grandson around an empty baseball field, yet it's not as simple as I thought. Using Camera tracking gets me great results, but it's tracking everything but him. Looking further, maybe Mocha is the way to go? I'm only half way through this tut, but was wondering if I'm on the right......wait for it............TRACK, ta da! Any input is greatly appreciated as usual.
great tutorial as usual! The game looks more like Mortal Kombat than Street Fighter though hehe but you are forgiven for being such a good teacher, thanks!
Hey ich habe mir gleich gedacht das du Deutsch sprichst :) wie auch immer , thank you a lot for your tutorials man, they Really helped me learn all that vfx after effects goodness:) i would love to See more in depth tutorials about mocha. habe a nice Day and Danke dir! ! Super Kanal :)
No that was exactly the amount of information I wanted to know, you save me so much time studying with breaking it down like this. Oops, I'm a cat - I mean "meow"
i hope you make more advanced tutorial in the future ,keep up the great work, your videos are the best on youtube ,you are my mentor in after effects ,love your work
as always, love these tutorials. How would you go about tracking on that grass at the beginning? with no clear and distinguished points, would it be impossible? would we be better physically putting a marker down like a picnic blanket etc?
Unless he was using something that has visually identical tracking points it was done with the After effects inbuilt 3D tracker. That grass was very short (and therefore less affected by wind) so it likely wasn't hard. Yes, adding any high contrast (in tone and/or hue depending on track settings) objects should give better track results. Also you can get tracking data on things you can't track (long windy grass or even empty space that's mid air) by tracking points around it for relative motion.
As it happened I used Mocha AE to do the tracking... ;) No track markers or nothing, being a planar tracker get some things done you would struggle with doing with any 2D point or feature trackers
Close, I actually just did it in Mocha as it was the easiest way :) Managed to get a decent track on the frames of the glasses, cleaned it up a bit and voila!
Superb tutorial. I do have a question. How can I use the Show Planar Surface tool to have a footage (insert) go "under" fingers (or a hand) when tracking? This is in regard if a person is holding a tablet and a "thumb" happens to block the screen. There is a video on RUclips on it, but they do not go into detail. Your assistance on this would be highly appreciated.
I'm not sure where the Show Planar Surface tool would come into play here. You will need to track your fingers separately and create a matte for the fingers :) You can then use that matte to block out the element you are trying to be 'under' the fingers
If there's enough interest I will be sure to create tons more tutorials for it - there's some great stuff you can do with it and it only got better with version 5
Mark me down as another vote for more Mocha AE tutorials. :-)

tobias , i love your work and i watch all your videos ,pleas make a tutorial about tracking on a face or head
For tracking a face or head you need 'object tracking' which is quite a level more advanced than basic planar tracking
i hope you make more advanced tutorial in the future ,keep up the great work, your videos are the best on youtube ,you are my mentor in after effects ,love your work
Learned another new thing today, thank you so much sir!! 👻

This is in regard if a person is holding a tablet and a "thumb" happens to block the screen. There is a video on RUclips on it, but they do not go into detail. I'm not sure where the Show Planar Surface tool would come into play here. You will need to track your fingers separately and create a matte for the fingers :) You can then use that matte to block out the element you are trying to be 'under' the fingers
Very nice details tutorial.... Thanks @Surfacedstudio
