Ever wanted to know how to extract a moving element from your footage to create some amazing VFX?
In this tutorial I will show you how to use Mocha AE in Adobe After Effects to perform some basic rotoscoping and make a bowl of carrots fly through the air!
If you want to follow along with this tutorial, get the footage here: www.surfacedst...
Mocha AE comes included in Adobe After Effects and is a great tool to make your rotoscoping work easier and quicker.
By tracking your shape to the movement of the object you eliminate the need for additional keyframes.
This way, Mocha is essentially your 'rotoscoping assistant' and you only need to create keyframes to keep the tracked shape square over the object you want to rotoscope out.
If you don't have the 'Paste mocha mask' option available, check out the Imagineer Systems download page to see if you require any additional plugins:

Honestly, this channel is so underrated, thank you so much for these, awesome work.
Thank you so much for the awesome feedback!
Yes! This is the best tutorial for mocha Ae ..i was searching for it and finally found it..
Glad to hear you enjoyed it! I gotta make an updated version one day for the new version of Mocha AE
@@SurfacedStudio it would be very helpful..
I am on a roll, just finished all basic After effect tutorials from zero to end,now moving towards intermediate tutorials . Thanks Im feeling good
Thank you for letting me know, that is great to hear :)
I watch lots of after effects tutorials and I think your tutorials are the best! Very easy to understand and well-narrated. Other tutorials narrate crap like "ok guys so what you are going to want to go ahead and do right now is that you are going to want to go ahead and go and just click this button.
Hey Tobias, may I just say: Ur amazing, inspiering, and a very good teacher...
I remember u when u had 75k subs, and since then ur vids just got so much more detailed and improved.. Its amazing, keep it up!
And I Will always support u!
Thanks Falk
Thank you very much for the support and the awesome feedback :) It's nice to hear that I'm no longer where I was a couple of years ago (and that it seems to be going uphill)
I'm a fresh subscriber to your channel and i really love it, i think i will spend this week watching all your videos whenever i find time ☺
Thank you for the feedback :) Glad to hear you are enjoying my silly little tutorials!
I really appreciate this tut! Thank you. I only wish I knew how to make that lag-blur-ghost-image effect like the opening. Working on something right now that would be perfect for.
You're welcome :) For the ghost trail, simply duplicate the rotoscoped bowl layer a few times, delay each copy by a frame and then change the opacity so that the 'trails' become fainter :)
Wow - Thank you so much! Love your channel. Hope you're having a good time digging into some new stuff for yourself. : )
Thank you buddy ,you have a very powerful pedagogy , I am a fan of your videos
Thanks man!

Other tutorials narrate crap like "ok guys so what you are going to want to go ahead and do right now is that you are going to want to go ahead and go and just click this button." BTW what screen recording software do you use which shows your keyboard strokes and the yellow glow around the mouse pointer?
YES!!! LOL That's exactly what most tutorials sound like. Ha ha.
haha! yep
Good to see I'm not the only one who notices the pointless overuse of 'go ahead' in tutorial videos.
Yes.. easy to understand.. thank you
this channel is best tutorials on After Effects
:D Thank you for the comment!
Always love your tutorials man, never would've thought to use Mocha for roto.
+Crumbling Cube Mocha is great for roto :)
Thank you so much! I didn't really come across roto that much while in design school and I just started my first postgrad motion design gig. Have to learn this by tomorrow morning for a project and you saved me a bunch of anxiety! Great tutorial!
Great to hear you found the video helpful :) I really gotta make an updated version for this tutorial!
You are a skillful teacher! You have a great style. Thank you.
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Perfect tutorial .Very easy to understand .You are the man tobias
Thank you for the comment!
So clutch. Loving these Mocha tutorials so much.

HaloUnion ف
To be honest, your awesome Tobias! You've showed and explained everything in detail! Thanks for such an awesome video. Hope you get to a million subscribers.
Thank you so much for the awesome comment :) Maybe one day I'll get there, it's a very long road haha!
Your all tutorials are really awesome, you do incredible job without wasting much time and stick to the subject unlike others. Your intro is always interesting. Great work, keep it up.
Thanks for the feedback :) That is nice to hear!
Another excellent tute......always easy to follow and concise
Thank you :)
Finally I understand what Roto is. Thankyou buddy.
+C.Soul Films No worries dude!
I've been following you for quite a time now and have never been disappointed in any tutorial of yours, up until this one. The mocha commands you use to do things you never mention and I can't tell from the video what you are doing. I got to re-positioning the shape over the bowl and somehow unselected it and couldn't get it back. My level of frustration is such at the moment that I am just going to stop.
I guess I will check out the Mocha for absolute beginners. Perhaps tomorrow.
Hence why I stated that that's the requirement for this video
Really Nice Man!
Thanks man!
OMG! You're great at these!
Haha, thanks man!
EXACTLY WHAT I BEEN LOOKING FORRRR
Glad to hear! Check out the updated series here: ruclips.net/video/rgwFQDWOKgs/видео.html
Amazing. I love your After Effect tutorials so much!
You've made an intimidating subject much easier to understand. THANKS!
I'm so distracted by those biceps!
Oh and yeah, nice tutorial as well.
LOL, must be the carrots! Glad you liked the tutorial though :D
Very helpful video! For sure the way you film the scene plays a big part when you plan to do rotoscoping in post!
It does indeed! Great to hear you enjoyed the video :)
thanks alot.. more tutorials on mocha pls really loved it
+vedula sampath Glad to hear, more Mocha in the making
thanks for all your hard work man im planing to eventually go to school for this but looking at your vidoes as help me a lot with my videos so far. im go try that 3d thing next
Thank you for the feedback :) Glad to hear you find my tutorials helpful
Surfaced Studio you're welcome man no problem
Lots of love from India ❤️😍
Greetings from Australia :D
very informational vid! keep up the good work!
+Unranked Bandit Thanks, that's the plan :)
Loved the video and as always you have shown me a technique which will more than half the time taken on projects. I used to avoid Rotoscoping where ever possible as it became so tedious I could sometime spend days on a scene doing masks as the AE Rotoscoping tool is very bad with lower quality footage.
Mocha does help a lot when I have to do roto :) It's still a fair bit of work (more on that later), but it's manageable
you explain things very easily .. thanks
:)
Hey this video was extremely helpful so thank you! I am trying to use rotoscoping and tracking to cut out video footage from video and essentially superimpose it another another video. I was wondering if you had any advice or tips on exactly how to do that! Thanks again for this video!
That can be simple (if they are both tripod shots as no tracking is needed) up to impossible (if they're two non-aligned handheld shots). If it's totally misaligned you may not be able to match the elements up without entirely extracting them and tracking them back into the other shot - it'll be an uphill battle though from the sounds of it :)
Can you explain how exactly to extract them and track them back into another shot?
Very useful especially for a beginner like me👍🏾
Thank you, that's great to hear :)
yep...your tutorials are the best
Aw, thank you :D
Thanks for the tips on where to put the keyframes!!
You're welcome :) Glad to hear it helped!
Thanks alot for this tutorial. best explaination :D
Glad to hear you enjoyed it :)
Just what I needed! Cheers mate :)
Glad to hear :)
never thought this vfx was that easy ;-)

Amazing understandable and easy tutorial

So damn good! Your tutorials totally kickass.
Thanks a tonne :)
Glad to hear you're enjoying my videos, thank you!
Great I like what you tutor. How do you crate old TV effect on and off
was waiting for this
That worked out well
Hi, you are amazing, thank you very much for these tutorials and really love your works. Keep continue please. :)
Glad you’re enjoying them :)
you deserve a lot more subs
Thank you for the friendly comment 😊
Thanks for doing that!!
No worries!
thank you!! I've been wanting to see this. I'm doing chroma key but the lighting is so bad so it makes green screen undoable. I was so dumb that I export the videos into image sequence and erase the background with eraser in photoshop. This saves so much time. Thank you
Haha, no worries! Make sure to also check out my tutorials on green screening - that's still the easier way to go than rotoscoping :)
You rocks MEN!
Thanks dudes!
awesome tut! thanks!
You're welcome!
What did you do different to the intro in the effect than the actual effect at the end of the video? Pixel interpollation?
Eh, the echo trail was just something I added on and not part of the 'rotoscoping' which I wanted to cover in this tutorial :)
Super helpful. Thanks!
hello, great tutorial. Would you help me? I'm doing the whole process right, but the mask animation isn't happening inside the after effects. What is happening?
Hey Tobias, may I ask how do you create those blurry effects that accompany the motion of the moving object? Did you add any additional motion blur effects to create those ghosting artifacts?
Would really appreciate your reply if you could help me out.
I use After Effects for most of my effects. After Effects allows you to add 'motion blur' to moving objects which gives you the blur effect associated with fast moving elements :) The carrot bowl trail itself was slightly different - I duplicated the layer a few times, offset it in time and faded it out to create that 'tail'
That's a great effect! It is very visually appealing too. You really did pay attention to a lot of the small details for the scenes you create!
And once again thanks for all the great tutorials! Always looking forward to your tutorials every week!
Thank you for all the great feedback! I feel really grateful to have such an amazing group of people on this channel :)
Thanks a lot! Really Helpful!
Great to hear, you are welcome!
It would be very helpful if you linked to the prerequisite videos you mention.
They are linked both as annotations and as cards
nice tuts!!! what codec gives best performance for Roto, greenscreen besides using proxies?
for Roto uncompressed, magic yuv utvideo lagarith ciniform dnxhd prores grassvalley hq or is image sequence dpx tiff targa jpeg the way to go for vfx?
thank you!
Great, many thanks
No worries :)
You have been a great help thank you. :)
Glad to hear you found the tutorial helpful!
Great video! I was wondering if you could make a tutorial on making a force field in AE? :3
Mocha Rocks.
I'm starting to really like it!
i love your accent - with that accent i could sell ice to Eskimos :)
Haha, not sure anyone could sell ice to Eskimos... unless it's ice cream in which case that seems to be easy to sell to anyone :D
Cool. Thanks, man!!
No worries!
Very nice tutorial thanks for all the hard work, I was wondering why can't they just make mocha or after effect track by color. I think that would be easier.
Thank you for the comment :) Technically you can, you just need to apply a colour effect to the layer first to select the preferred colour channel and then do the tracking - it'll work off whatever is available to the tracker. You may have to pre-compose, but it's not a difficult thing to do
@@SurfacedStudio Thanks for replying. ..I will give this a try to see if I can make it work.
Thank you for this tutorial.
Can you make the same tutorial in moving video?
Isn't this a moving video?
+Surfaced Studio Yes the camera is not moving , it's still
Why would that be any different when rotoscoping?
Surfaced Studio
Not for rotoscoping , i just want remove objects in moving videos and one more thing , can you make tutorial on camera project for removing objects from moving videos.
Thanks in advance.
thank you very much for this tutorial
No worries :)
Awesome thank you!!
No worries :)
Can you do a tutorial on how I get your beastly forearms y they look so good
Hey Tobias, I'm having a hard time importing my clip into Mocha AE. It says that the clip is corrupted or an unsupported format. Could this be that Mocha AE does not have a setting for 240 fps?
Are you transcoding your footage to prores or dnxhr?
I know this is a year old, but for other people reading this too. Always transcode your h264 scheisse to proper editing codecs =)
Thanks bro from (India)👍👍👍
You’re welcome :)
At 6:25, I was trying to open a new file with footages that I want to track. Somehow, however, it doesn't have the information or gets an error that is not found or something. Do you think it's a lite version or something? Do I have to buy a full version or what? How can I do it?
I am not sure where your process falls over. Can you import the file and use it properly in AE? What is the error and when does it occur?
Surfaced Studio I did, but it doesn't let me see the file footage that I imported from After Effects.
+Artist Creations Pictures, Inc. Maybe try a different codec? For tech support with Mocha you will have to contact Imagineer Systems
Also, when the masking path around the item is wider than the item itself, its doesn't matter, because it's only picking up the background. The background is the freeze-frame layer which will match the inaccuracies anyway... (But not the hand holding the bowl)
Technically we'd only need to roto the edge of where Celina's hand/arm touches the bowl, but since I wanted to show people how to roto a full object I just went with it :)
I totally hear you. I really like your stuff, I totally learn a lot from you!
Thanks man, really appreciate the feedback :)
great tutorial. however i'm having a problem... when i copy the shape data to the layer in after effects, the starting shape is there, but the keyframes do not transfer over... so it does not animate with the clip. any suggestions on why that may be?
I don't even use after effects so what doesn't hold me back watching ur great tutorials xD
Hahaha, thank you :) Glad to hear you’re enjoying my tutorials!
Wow!
Thank you
No worries at all :D
Any tips on how to remove the shadow on your pants when selena is approaching you ?
Like Mask and color correct ?
Yeah I’d mask and colour correct - effects masks are an awesome tool for that so you don’t need to create so many separate layers :)
worked thanks!
Glad to hear :) Be sure to check out the new version of my Mocha AE tutorials here: ruclips.net/video/rgwFQDWOKgs/видео.html
great tutorial. thank you :)
No worries!
Amazing! :)
Thank you :)
Thank you for this tutorial
i have a question :
how did you make motion blur for bowl after roto?
+ahmed zaki I added a CC Force Motion Blur effect to it. I left the samples low to create a distinct ripple-tail for the bowl
I'm surprised you didn't use the stabilize feature to hold the bowl centered while you work. This job is exactly why it's there.
I should have, didn't think of it at the time - I'm still getting into using Mocha :)
Surfaced Studio well, it was still a great video anyway.😁
I do appreciate the pointer :) I'll try to remember next time
instead can we use a photograph of that room from same angle and position and put it behind the main layer
If you are talking about the clean plate, then yes
Yes thanks for help
hey, thanks so much for the great tutorials they are REALLY helpful!
i'm having a problem tho, when i paste mocha's mask into AE, the whole timeline gets filled with keyframes and not just the tracked part (basically if i start the tracking at frame 50, frames 1 to 49 will have the same mask as 50 does)..
do you know how to fix that? thanks!
thank you for this amazing tutorial, i have a question how did you do the repeated frames effects(don't the the effect name) at 0:10 for the tissue and the carrot bowl?
I think I used the 'echo' effect from the Ignite Plugins for that. You can also simply duplicate your layer a couple of times and offset the time a couple of frames and then fade them out to get the same effect :)
Surfaced Studio thanks for the reply I just have a problem of you using the word "simply" 😂
It's really not that hard, you just need to understand the basics of using AE. If you're just getting started, here's a full beginner tutorial series: ruclips.net/p/PLs2aOcA-EaLN1TwemqyxdjTg2puGtwvkQ
I like your video very much. It's really great. I'll keep an eye on your channel. I am your fan and I will support you.
Thank you, glad to hear you're enjoying my videos!
nice job
Hello Surfaced Studio. I have a question.
I want to buy Adobe After Effecst cc just Adobe After Effects cc.
Can i also make 3d text and blood effects?
Pick your poision: ruclips.net/video/sHHEQMdJdiA/видео.html
thanks
Sir Mocha pro the video clip not import ? "the file is corrupted or in an unsupported format" but my video clip is mov or mp4
Happy New Year! I'm following along and have run into a problem. The frame property settings are correct and consistent, and, I have offered numerous options, all yielding the same message: .
The file is corrupted or in an unsupported format.C:/Users/wchug/Dropbox/Floating Carrots.mp4'. Im abit confused, as the files are fine in Premier CC. Can you make any suggestion?
Thank you-
Bill
Happy New Year Bill! Unfortunately I can't say I had the problem before so I'm not sure what's going on - do you have the correct codec installed to play the video file on your computer? Might be worth reaching out to the Imagineer Systems team as well - they're quick to reply on their forum
Hi Willward! have you find anyway out? I am having same problem.
Truthfully, I have not focused on the issue as of late. :(
Hallo Tobias ich hoffe es geht dir gut in diesen schwierigen Zeiten.😉
ich bin ein großer Fan von deinen Videos und deiner Arbeit. Daher komme ich mit meiner Frage gerne zu dir.
Also:
Dein Freund Alex 🌞
Hi Alex, ja das ist moeglich. Du musst das Projekt in mehrere Schritte unterteilen:
1. Rotoscope den Fussball

Thanks, great to hear you liked it!
How do we make the impact that under the saucer, which in the first video?
What do you mean with 'impact that under the saucer'?
This was a very helpful tutorial for Mocha, thank you Tobias :) Though it seems unnecessary to rotoscope the whole carrot bowl? Selina's hand only touched the lower left part, and surely could have been removed with a very simple mask?
True, you could have gotten away with very little :) I roto-scoped the whole bowl though as an 'object' simply because it then lets me add effects to the carrot bowl as a whole - like the glow / trail at the beginning of the video. It just opens up some options you don't have otherwise :)
That makes sense! Anyway I enjoyed the video, thank you.
