First of all, it is GOOD that you notice this tension. That is the start! I would practice non-singing exercises like the spoken sirens in an easy part of your voice. Also humming. Do the exercises with the 3 fingers as I show in the video.

I have been a squeezer most of my singing life LOL! And it’s sometimes hard to unlearn but not impossible! My poor folds & muscles took a beating for years!
I love the humming but only recently learned there’s a difference between humming nasally or even just closed as opposed to on a “mmmmm” but with space in the back of the teeth. Victoria uses the “taller” visualization and I instantly yawn! That’s a good thing!
How I do it is almost like “ohhllmm” but no “oh”, just “mmmm”. Feels much more open (taller) especially in the back. My lips buzz. Supported core breathing is super important too.
It’s working wonders for me and the great thing is teachers like Victoria (and my personal/class teachers) give different methods to give us students the choice to see what works best. Keep at it! 👏🏻😃

Very interesting that the same technique applies in ballet! When jumping think down! It makes for lighter elevation. If you think “up” when you jump, the upper body strains. It’s so similar!!

@@Victoria-Victorious Hi Victoria! I thought I'd follow up on my progress. I've noticed my throat isn't as tight anymore as before. I've been using the exercises from your 'open up the vowel' video and that has helped a lot! I don't have to hold my finger around my throat anymore to open it up. However, I'm currently struggling with sustaining higher notes for a long time, like in the song Falling by Harry styles, the line after the second chorus that ends on a G#3. Is there any video you have made you recommend watching to train my voice to sustain those higher notes?

Great to hear! As far as tensing up on the high notes, well, I cannot tell without seeing and hearing you. It could be anything from pushing up too much vocal weight (watch my videos on mixed voice), jaw tension, tongue tension, locking the breath, not enough support or all of the above! You could start with my video, Stop Straining on High Notes! 6 STEPS Right Here! ruclips.net/video/vLukxe-dsKg/видео.html. That might help clarify some things!

I thank you so much!!!!! I have been learning your exercises for some time now. I am now 77 years old. You have helped me to open up my high notes. I am in the beginnings of being able to sing a sustained G# 4 into the A4. Many years ago I still had the B4. Which I hope to sing again too. Except for AH and EH my vowels are pretty good. My breath support is more my issue for singing. I am using a device called Breather Music Coach. It has helped me improve my breath support. I would recommend it as an breath support tool. They also have Breathers for people with lung issues and athletes. I did have classical voice teachers in the past so I do understand posture, how to keep a loose jaw and tongue. I warm up with down -up 5 tones scales, I do glides, sirens. and bubbles, I love doing 9 tones scales on all the vowels, mum bub, gug, Etc. I do glides, sirens and bubbles. Most of the time I get through most of the 2-1/2 octaves.
I do have a problem with my notes G3 and down. It seems my vocal cords don't close and I feel like I have phlegm in my vocal cords. I also have no resonance there. I talked to my Choir Director. He said it was due to stress. My sister who is 13 months younger than me started with dementia this last year. Yes it was stressful, but my low note problem has been with me for years. You have many throat exercises. Could you tell me which ones would be most helpful with my low problem. Today after vocalizing I tried singing the alto part in my Church Hymn Book. I could barely make a sound.
I sorry I could not join your class today.
By the way, I love your sense of humor and love your energy it is very motivating.

Hi Victoria, Thanks for your great advice. I've been singing over 40 yrs. Never warmed up until about 3 years ago. Well, of course, I'm paying the price now. I stopped singing for the past 2 years but I want to get back into it professionally and have been working on my voice. The doctors advised that I go to a voice teacher and and speech therapist. I've been to a speech therapist and I do vocal exercises like yours. She encouraged me to work with a straw and work with a vocal coach...) My main problem is that I need to clear my throat often (while I sing) Sometimes I have to cough. I crack too. (I have been diagnosed by specialists and I've been told that I have "habit" cough and my vocal cords don't close completely at one end. I believe it may be a type of vocal cord paralysis although the doc did not use that word) I think I've improved a little but of course, this is a big issue when I sing "live". Can you advice me? I have searched your RUclipss and haven't found anything like this exactly. But I'd love to get your professional advice. Or, is it too late for me?? Thank you!!

I’ve been struggling with throat tension for the past few years. It was partly a result of singing with musicians (rock) who would not turn down their volume. I was pushing so much that I was going flat (on songs that were probably too low for me to begin with)
I was stuck in a throat singing rut and couldn’t get out. I felt like I had forgotten how to sing! My lower range was particularly affected. I am a mezzo with a big range C3-A6.
I’ve been trying various things with some improvement but continued backsliding. Yesterday I watched this video and did the exercises. I felt relief! I felt my singing position move to the nasopharynx and out of the throat!
I sang in my very small choir at Midnight mass last night. I have also been struggling with throat tightness there) We had 5 people singing in the choir (2 are very quiet) I am the only alto. At the end of the service we received a round of applause! I really believe that this video helped me to release my voice so that I blended better with my soprano friend and that was part of the reason why we sounded so great! I’m not saying we sounded great just because of me but I can say that we would not have sounded as good if I was singing from my throat! Thank you so much!
There are lots of vocal coaches on RUclips (and I have an occasional live one as well) but they don’t all understand the nature of certain issues or how to fix them! Your spiel about your years of performing and teaching is completely deserved! Thank you and Merry Christmas!

I'm so happy that my videos are helping you! So when you first choose a song, practice it for technique first: (1) sing it on a single. easy vowel or something like BUB BUB or BEEP BEEP. If easy, then (2) add the lyrics. (3) Take any hard parts and make them into exercises . (4) Sing the whole song again for technique. (5) Then practice and add expression, word stress, dynamics. I will make a video on this specifically, but I do discuss and show how to do some of this in: Want Faster Progress in Your Singing? My chest voice has improved a lot and I've managed to get into mixed voice but it's been described as very "heady". I am unable to actually sing in head voice or falsetto without completely locking up with tightness. My teacher is very good but he is young and somewhat inexperienced, he's 19 and I'm 18. He has a degree and is classically trained but I think the experience you have is unattainable without age as you have had more time to develope your teaching. I guess this was a long way of saying I appreciate what you do. Thank you.

I play a Japanese bamboo flute (the shakuhachi). I used these techniques because I'm tensing my throat while playing my flute. I get throat sounds, and my teacher can tell it's affecting my tone. I sang octave slides enough to hear and feel the difference between when I was tensing and not tensing. Then I tried to mimic the feeling of not tensing when playing my flute. I alternated between singing slides and playing octave jumps on my flute. Sing, play, sing, play. This made a huge difference in my tone, I had no throat sounds, and now I think I can actually tell when I'm tensing. Thank you so much! Before your video, I was struggling with not being able to achieve the body awareness to not tense while playing. Now I think playing without tensing is achievable if I continue to retrain myself with your exercises.

I play guitar and sing for a living and sometimes I go through phases where I don’t realize I’m screwing up my vocal technique because I’m having to focus on the physical and mental challenges of doing two things at once. Sometimes the guitar parts are complicated In juxtaposition to the vocals, so keeping mindful about everything is a challenge. But luckily your voice is in my head now steadily coaching while play each tune, and it is helping immensely. 🙏

Seriously, thank you very much for another great video. You make vocal technique so clear and understandable when everyone else turns it into something either too vague or cryptic. You are, Madam, and by far, the best vocal coach online.

I am a 13 -14 year old boy and I kind of have a high voice and I am trying to use it .The first video you made really helped me , for example when you said not suck up to much air .😊
Sometimes even though I get the tips I still find myself struggling a little bit.especially when I am always feeling tension in my throat 😢

You got me on this one Victoria Victorius. I've been watching your "VIDEOS" all week (loving them) and practicing my youtube karaoke songs for a fun night tomorrow. My voice sounds a bit smoother as I go higher in pitch, but my throat or vocal chords feel strained or sore now even though the sound doesn't. I'm thinking the Squeeze?!

  • @nsan56

You are a wonderful teacher and I love your sense of humor. I just started viewing your videos because I'm trying to find a reason why my vocal chords crack and stop while singing. I was a soloist in church for many years and was in the choir. I had to leave the choir and stop singing because one day my notes weren't coming out, and it was painful to sing I've been to ENTS, Laryngologists and no one can find a problem. I was told last year I "might" have GERD (acid reflux), but even then the tests were inconclusive. I just saw a different laryngologist last month and was told everything was fine but that I had signs of GERD. I have constant burning of my throat and nose. I was told I also have allergies and had allergy treatments for 3 years - nothing has worked. I am frustrated to no end! I noticed in doing the third exercise where you demonstrate the squeezing of the vocal folds that my middle-high note stops. Should I continue to try that exercise until something comes out or should I just stop?

I would never force anything out. Start with spoken sirens, followed by sung if easy. Focus on your middle voice first. Follow the basics in my **PLAYLIST for BEGINNING SINGERS, all in 1 place!

I tried the nine tone scale with the fingers on my neck and thinking down with a wider space on the back like you demonstrated, and that E4 (my range is usually A2-F4, not sure what my register is to be honest) that I sometimes find so DAUNTING came out so beautiful! Thank you!

Can you do a video on chest voice high tones? I don’t know if it is called belting, but like, using “the big voice” on high notes. Like Maria’s Carey in the chores of “And I-I-I will always love you” …. I was able to do the highest tone in Golden Eye a couple of years ago, but I’ve done so much head voice to not disturb the neighbors I’ve gone rusty; and now I actually really struggle with my “big voice” that I love using so much. 🙁
Btw: I watch your videos almost every day and used this video to help my singer boyfriend! Amazing tips!

Hello! I have a video on belting. You should also focus on your mixed voice, specifically chest mix. I have a playlist on that too. You can do a search with my channel name or go to my channel page and see my playlists.
