This video helped me IMMENSELY. I used to have a lot of jaw pain while singing and in 10 seconds you showed me the main source of my problems. Thank you.
Awesome Guy It's ok to lean forward when playing the guitar, as long as you're not sticking your chin forward!!! You can lean forward but keep the chin down and back of the neck elongated. Takes a little practice to get used to, but it's pretty simple to get down initially.
Hey, I know this video was put up like 10 years ago but I appreciate the teaching rather than snarky youtube shorts that say just don't do it. This is a bad habit that I want to break. Thanks for the example and straightforward instruction.
I don't stick my jaw out that much but since I've starting singing more and practicing vocal exercises daily for about 6 months now I'm having pain in my neck and now it has gone to the back of my neck, wow thanks for this video man
Omg this cured my throat tension! I’ve always stuck my neck out like a giraffe bc I’m 6’1” and although the position from the video feels like my neck is short 😂 it really did help a lot. Thank you!
. I've was a touring professional opera singer in my younger days. At that time the higher range roles did not seem attainable. This young man has given me the key to unlocking those higher elusive notes, which is just brilliant at the age of 68. I never thought I was capable of singing and enjoying the higher tessitura roles. . Thank you so much. You are providing great tuition.... Paul Waite.
Marnell - thank you. You are truly an awesome instructor. I sang in choirs in my younger years and just in the last three have started soloing in a band... and I've got so much to learn! You have a straightforward easy-does-it style that just works, and I plan to go through all your videos multiple times. I have subscribed and look forward to more great tips. :)
jleedee Thank YOU for such great feedback. :) I am happy to hear that you are receiving the instruction well. I have more videos on the way. If there is any topic in particular that you would like to see, just let me know and I'll see what I can do. Congrats on your solo parts too!
Hey Marnell! Just wanted to leave a comment and thank you for all these videos. RUclips is so full of 1-2min singing tips that it's absurd. I really like the way you're approaching this by picking a topic and going over it clearly and systematically in steps. I always feel like I've really gained something of value from watching one of your videos. Keep it up!
I don't know if you have another RUclips Channel amigo Marnell but if this is your 1st one let me say that I believe you will be helping many people in the future! You can Teach nice & calm & to the point~ ;) Keep up the good work & you'll see many good things coming your way! :) God Bless~

I never realized until recently that I stuck my head forward because it was such a habit it felt neutral! I literally was getting headaches from singing (I sign for a living, so I could still sing passively. It it always feels harder than it needs to) anyways so happy that this one simple thing seems to be addresssing all the problems I’ve been having!!
Oh my goodness, this is totally my problem! My son video taped me singing in Church and I’m constantly putting my chin up and forward. Even my neck muscles LOOKED tight and strained in the video. I’m going to work on keeping my head properly aligned!! Thanks for the advice!! 👍🏻👍🏻
Hey man,I really respect your work,I'm donduck12 from modern vocalist forum, you helped me with this video, post some more and u will help many other people in the future !
Sierra Bogess in concert in Sydney, I noticed on her high soprano notes n belt big notes her head went forward! The difference in full tone sound was evident as a result.
When you start noticing these things in other singers and can HEAR the effect it has on their voice, it feels like a 1000 light bulbs just went off. Makes you think twice before you start doing those same habits again, huh. Hahaha. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Wow thanks so much. Makes so much sense i tend to push chin forward and its a quick and easy tip to fix it, and also knowing what huge impact it makes on resonance.
Thanks for the great tip, +Marnell Sample! This was such a timely video to re-watch. Yesterday I was reminded of the importance of keeping a neutral head position by re-reading notes from our lessons back in 2011, and the difference is night and day! I was watching a video today of a singer who's known for her "effortless" high notes, and I noticed for the first time that she sticks her chin out for all of her high notes. Yikes!!! Many listeners have no idea how constricted and lacking in resonance that type of sound is.
+Jen V You're welcome! And yes, this is a problem that can definitely creep up on you rather easily, and then you wonder, "Well, why is my throat feeling tight here all of a sudden!" Keeping the head back over the shoulders definitely helps in keeping the efficiency of the production a lot.
Thank you Sir.It's very helpful because I experience the back throat tension oftentimes and I think my chin stick forward because of my eye glasses. So thank you very much !!!
One of my teacher's used to say, in opposition to the idea of p r o j e c t i n g -----> the sound, to just sing as far in front of you as the length of your arm extended in front of you....he hoped to stop singers from pushing too much breath out of the mouth....your excellent video reminded me of this notion, although you were mainly speaking about neck alignment, which is also a tremendous aid in keeping the pharynx open, as you point out....To the point and right on with facts imho.
damn dude thank you! I been doing this every day for 7 years ....I been so dizzy and my ears ring and jaw hurts and back Hahaha, ear been ringing cause of my jaw and I'm dizzy cause I'm straining my neck all the time haha , well now I know
thank you! I only sing for fun in the car when nobody else is around but a lot of times my jaw hurts so I don't do it as much as I would like. I didn't realize I was sticking my chin out but I must have been because the pain in my jaw went away as soon as I made a conscious effort to keep my chin tucked down. now I can sing freely in the car :-)
Perhaps you posted this comment on the wrong video. But if you're referring to holding the tongue out of the mouth, do it to the point where it is comfortable -- stretched out, but still comfortable. If you have a rather pronounced frenulum, then yes, it will create a natural limit for you; don't fight that too much.
Damn man you help me so much, for a sec I thought there was something mentally wrong with me.. its funny because I feel much more alive & confident for some reason, thank you..
What an awesome video! i love learning about singing, am motivated to improve as much as i can vocally and knowledge vise, have been for the last 2years, and so many of your videos have talked on topics and given tips that are not easy at all to find (ive searched pretty much the whole internet) i assume that a lot of the content you are giving out is worth a lot! ive had vocal programs and they don't even mention such important topics and tips, if you ever come out with one, i for sure will buy it! one of the most helpful youtuber teachers there is, and well, overall!.
+Misael V. Thanks so much! I try to bring unique, fresh information because, well, what's the point in repeating the same thing everyone else is saying? It adds nothing new. We don't need another 50 videos saying, "Oh, just make sure you keep your throat relaxed." I AM actually working on a program, although it's taking me some time to put together. In the meantime, if you ARE looking for a good program, I would recommend Phil Moufaregge's The Pro Singer's Vault. I am actually a part of the FB group and respond to some of the questions people have, so it would be kind of being in a program with me. Plus, Phil is good anyways. We share very similar views on most of this. :) You can find his program here: www.grow-the-voice.com/best-online-singing-course.html?nab=0&nabe=6739790155218944:1
Marnell Sample i totally know of phil!! awesome coach too! ive seen you 2 work together in some videos, both awesome coaches, i totally have phil on my list, i never want to stop learning so ill always have it on my list, besides, i have only like 3-4 left in my list of info to buy, used to have like 15. Totally agree that your information is unique, like i said ive had many systems, most of the mainstream ones, and you say things that have been mentioned in non, which is why i said what i said, awesome job you and phil do, you are indeed unique and separate yourself from the usual youtube coach that indeed just repeats things. I also like that you don't seem to stick to a "structure" as in SLS, and such.
Misael V. Thanks a lot! Phil is definitely awesome. We're working on doing some more videos together. And you're right, we don't stick to any one dogma -- we just use what we know that actually works and cater it to the person in front of us. :-) Which are some of the other programs you intend to get?
Marnell Sample intend to get ken tamplin, but have heard phil has worked with his program so i was guessing he will use some of his stuff, so i would get sort of a 2 on 1, hopefully that would be the case. Intended to try jamie vendera content, but i think his sort of montly subscription program expired, will have to check on that. Always wanted to try robert lunte, but have always been kind of not top priority, mostly because i already have enough info as it is to diggest and teach to my voice and body, and it can be tough schedule wise to fit it all in as it is. Ive seen his program can get really anatomical and such, which i don't intend to want, don't want to overcomplicate things, i mean some day for sure, but the way it seems, its that way, and i rather stick to stuff that just clicks easily instead of having to read a bunch of stuff on it, even though am not agaisn't it, i will for sure some day, but that kind of throws me off right now. Some other sources that i don't remember right now. I once had an argument with kevin richards, but it was more regarding the way he seemed personally and me not agreeing with some certain topics, but thats all, ill maybe try out his program too someday. I just study as much as i can from everywhere, and use the best i can find from each program, every program ive bought has had certain exercises that are unique to them that are not on the other ones, and thats usually what i look for, so i can ultimately make my own sort of personal vocal regimen, that can be the most effective for me personally, or in general, my own sort of vocal tool kit. So yea thats basically it, hopefully i can learn more gems from you, already use some of your stuff on my daily routine, even though i can be horrible at training consistenly due to busy schedule, which hinders my development a lot, 2 years and still have trouble with that, have to work at it.
Misael V. Phil was influenced by Ken Tamplin, so you will see some of that in the program, but also a lot of things which are unique to Phil due to his varied background. You definitely don't need complex anatomical explanations. That's only necessary if you want to become a voice scientist. Simple, practical information is what will help you the most. One thing I will mention, though. Unique exercises aren't necessarily needed to improve the voice. You can use the most basic exercises and improve tons. But HOW you do the exercises is what matters. That's what Phil and I take great lengths to focus on.
Thanks for sharing! The thumb exercise you showed is kind of what I've been using the past few weeks. Except that I put my thumb and index finger in the shape of an L - with the tip of my thumb slightly touching my Adam's apple and the index finger touching the tip of my nose. This way, I can also check if my voice box stays in a neutral position.
I thin my issue may be more severely damaging then these because as I try to sing AAAAAAHHHHH my throat is automatically vibrating and it sounds like I'm purring WTH??
How can you re-train the voice after hormones? I am a female and was on testosterone for nearly 4 years before I stopped it last year. I was trained to sing. I found screaming at an amusement park on the rollercoaster opened me up to the higher pitch that I didn't think was possible!
Unfortunately, this is not an area that I have much experience with. The only hormonal things I know about are when a boy goes through puberty, and when a woman has a child and/or goes through menopause. There are voice changes that occur with all of the above. (Usually the voice gets fuller/stronger and may become a bit lower, especially with menopause.) When the voice changes due to hormones, you usually have to go through a "retraining" period to familiarize yourself with the new sensations and how the voice responds differently to your thoughts/intentions. I put retraining in quotes because it's really more of a re-familiarization than anything.
I have a slightly lanky frame and tend to stick my head out a bit at higher volume, I tried this and retracting my head gives me less resonance and makes my larynx feel squished. But yes, I frequently have to massage the muscles in my head, neck and face
Very helpful. I have this problem to the extreme because of my strange setup which i really need to change. I got used to it so might be hard to stop lol.
I need relaxation from all the tensions you speak of relaxing from all your wrong singing tensions, you mention , this is how bad to worse in mere talking, I know the of tensions I have then all , it almost seeming too hard to do everytime I talk.
Hi Marnell, I am really enjoying your videos. I have a question, since January, my jaw has been stuck on the right side of my face, and I haven't been able to open my mouth completly since. Can't fix it in the moment due to financial issues, but would this affect me in my singing because of the tension there?
+Oscar Delgado Yes, as the inability to open the mouth freely normally ties up with tensions in the larynx. Were you involved in an accident or something? This sounds like something you should have addressed by a good massage therapist or osteopath who is used to dealing with jaw problems.
+Marnell Sample It just kind of happened out of nowhere, at first it got stuck, but after 20 min of moving it around it cracked and it would be good for the rest of the day, but suddenly I couldn't crack it anymore. I haven't gotten it checked yet, but I have recently been told that it could be because of a wisdom tooth that is coming out very crooked, lol. Anyway, I try to sing as relaxed as I can, it only hurts when I open my mouth very wide, for example when I tried the exercise on another video of yours to eliminate tongue tension, where you stick your tongue out and hold it with a rag and say "Ah", thats where it would hurt, so I ended up not doing it. I guess it isn't healthy to sing this way, but I really don't want to stop practicing :/
+Oscar Delgado Well, until you're able to get your jaw checked out, don't open the mouth so wide that it causes pain. Make sure your mouth opening is still comfortable.
Hi Marnell, I have been singing in church mostly but I do know that I must strain to reach the high notes. Haven't been able to get my voice to be free especially at high notes. Do you have a set of exercise to recommend for beginners to do daily? Another question, is vibrato achievable with practice or it is some kind of inner talent? I am not trying to learn that now but it would be good to know whether that option is there in the future when I get better. Thanks and God bless!
Selamat Zhang Unfortunately, I can't recommend a set of exercises because each voice is different, and thus would get prescribed a different regimen. Based on what you've written, I can't tell much of what you're doing. There are many reasons for which you could be straining. If you send me a little clip of yourself singing, I could give you a better idea of what would be good for you to practice. Use this link: www.vocalliberation.com/vocal-assessment Vibrato is mostly a thing of utilizing the voice freely. If you hold the larynx rigid, that will tend to stifle your vibrato. The larynx must be allowed to be loose and pliable. Agility exercises could help you find a little more flexibility within your larynx.
Hey man love the advice, but I never had jaw and neck tension until after my throat surgery...now when I sing on a good day I can only sing approximately two songs before my throat relapse and I get raspy and jaw and neck soreness... I'm really sad man this has been happening for years now and I don't know if my voice will ever truly be the same
when watching this video i noticed in singing id stick my chin out, i've since then focused on it now i don't do it as much and i catch myself.. but i feel as though my range is bit better rather than raspy and forced. what is this called? your video is the only video that discusses sticking your chin it when singing rather than keeping your head in alignment
I don't have a specific name for it. You could look up fitness and physical therapy vids on "forward head posture". For singers, this affects us in a particular way. Your larynx is central to all of this. If you inhale while the head is forward of your torso and/or looking up, the larynx cannot release properly with the breath. The larynx gets stuck in a high position with excess tension, and then you are stuck with that for the entire phrase. The skull needs to be more or less over top of the center of your rib cage, especially when inhaling. When you take in your breath, the breath itself will pull down on the larynx, especially a fuller breath. With the head in this position, it is able to pull down freely. Thus you are set up well for singing your phrase. These days, you need to be especially careful when singing with a mic. I often see singers sticking their head and chin forward to lean towards the mic. This is incorrect! It puts extra strain on your larynx. Your head needs to stay back over your body. If you need to lean into the mic, your head needs to stay over your rib cage and then the ENTIRE TORSO leans forward from the HIPS! (Look up a video on how to do a proper hip hinge to learn this.) If you're not going to lean your whole torso towards the mic, then lean backwards away from the mic and just reposition the mic closer to you. What I gave in the video is just a short term fix. The long term fix is you need to do strengthening exercises for the back side of the body. Exercises that strengthen the hamstrings and upper back are particularly useful. So things like stiff legged deadlifts and rows done towards the neck/collarbones.
@@VocalLiberation i've been practicing this head exercise and its weirdly been helping me. when i was younger i was a pretty good singer, but now since my voice has evolved and pubirty i am trying to get back to it.. sometimes i can find myself holding a note or singing with 0 tensions and a good amount of breathe support, other times i'm trying to figure out how i was able to sing that way.
@@patrickcazer Glad it has helped. If you sang before puberty, going through puberty can be a rough transition. Make sure you work on getting a good non-breathy falsetto on OO and EE, like trying to imitate the sound of a female opera singer. Also focus on singing nice round vowels in your full voice, especially on OH. As that gets stronger, then it will be easier to experiment with other sounds in the voice.
@@VocalLiberation i think i do pretty well in falsetto of course that's just a personal opinion. when doing scales should i do it in my regular voice? or a chest / mixed voice ?
@@patrickcazer Scales should be in regular voice, although you can do scales in the high part of your voice in a nonbreathy falsetto. Email me a clip demonstrating both. ruclips.net/user/VocalLiberationabout
You might want to check out this video. If that doesn't help, then you would need to sign up for a one-on-one lesson so we can investigate the problem more. ruclips.net/video/7OvkxDw6dzA/видео.html
I've never heard of that before, so I can't really comment on it. Perhaps if it's very cold and you're shivering a bit, the muscles might tense. But at long as you're indoors and somewhere warm, that shouldn't be too much of an issue.
4:29 for; here is what you do to fix the problem.

Nice!!!! I always had trouble with my throat, you are a my savior!!!!
Omega-Xis I'll accept that title, haha. Glad it helped you. :)
Far the most usefull video i've stumbled upon yet! Thank you for the upload
Nicolai Selck You're welcome. Thanks for watching!
This video completely blew my mind. Thanks man!
You're welcome!
Awesomeness
I appreciate you, bro 🙏🏾
Extremely helpful
Thank you so much Marnell! This is my main issue I think. I get pain in my neck and I am certain that this is it.
Thank you! I am a classic singer and I really find it useful!
Finally an useful singing video 🎤
I thin my issue may be more severely damaging then these because as I try to sing AAAAAAHHHHH my throat is automatically vibrating and it sounds like I'm purring WTH??
Very helpful thanks to your videos I'm preparing to audition for the voice
Eric Holman You're welcome. Good luck with your audition!
This is relevant for most of us who breath and talk! thank you
+Emma Dickinson Yes, very true.
Excellent advice!
Thank you!
Ranzel Tagle You're welcome!
Thank you, Marnell, that was very much to the point and helpful.
Thank you! Extremely helpful!
not necessary just for singers I meant to add
this technique is sooo helpful thank you
How can you re-train the voice after hormones?
WOW….. THAT REALLY HELPED ME…. GOD BLESS YOU
You're welcome.
Been having this problem forever!! Amzing stuff :D thank you!!!
+Jessica Flores You're welcome!
Wow thanks for the tips. It helped me a lot!!
Danny Nguyen You're welcome.
I have a slightly lanky frame and tend to stick my head out a bit at higher volume, I tried this and retracting my head gives me less resonance and makes my larynx feel squished. But yes, I frequently have to massage the muscles in my head, neck and face
I cannot believe so many of my problems were ONLY because of my POSTURE…. Thank you for this video, it really REALLY helped
You're welcome. Glad to be of service.
Very good teaching! Thank you
What a blessing you are. Thanks
Thank you so much! Will try that tomorrow!
Damien Kiefer Sounds good. Hope you have success with it!

Very helpful. I have this problem to the extreme because of my strange setup which i really need to change. I got used to it so might be hard to stop lol.
+blood lord (Chaotic Sonics) You're welcome.
The way you have your equipment set up definitely influences a lot of this.
Thank you Brother. It help me a lot.
Thanks, a very useful lession.
You're welcome. :)
Marnell Sample thank you so much for this tip
You're welcome.
I need relaxation from all the tensions you speak of relaxing from all your wrong singing tensions, you mention , this is how bad to worse in mere talking, I know the of tensions I have then all , it almost seeming too hard to do everytime I talk.
Wow! Thank you!!!! I lean in to get closer to a usb mic... I need to figure out a way to not have to... but... Thank you!!
You're welcome.
Huge respect…. My teacher❤
Thank you.
This is incredibly helpful. Thanks :)
nice man this helped me out a lot!!!! thank you so much dude
Joshua Jarrett You're welcome!
Thank you, brother!
really good teacher !
Thank you!
Use this link: www.vocalliberation.com/vocal-assessment
Vibrato is mostly a thing of utilizing the voice freely. If you hold the larynx rigid, that will tend to stifle your vibrato. The larynx must be allowed to be loose and pliable. Agility exercises could help you find a little more flexibility within your larynx.
Now that is a practical exercise to correct tension. Thanks a lot!!! :D :D :D
Hey man love the advice, but I never had jaw and neck tension until after my throat surgery...now when I sing on a good day I can only sing approximately two songs before my throat relapse and I get raspy and jaw and neck soreness... I'm really sad man this has been happening for years now and I don't know if my voice will ever truly be the same
What exactly was done to your throat?
@@VocalLiberation surgery, and after my voice hasn't been the same since😭😭😭
Still watching this and very useful ❤❤❤
Thankyou very much from india
You're welcome
Insane !!!! THANKS 😭❤️
when watching this video i noticed in singing id stick my chin out, i've since then focused on it now i don't do it as much and i catch myself.. but i feel as though my range is bit better rather than raspy and forced. what is this called? your video is the only video that discusses sticking your chin it when singing rather than keeping your head in alignment

Really good and helpful vids
Thank you for your wonderful feedback! All the best to you!
Very helpful. Thank you.
Thank you for watching and commenting!
This helped me on first try
I have a lot of tension in my jaw when I sing and I'm not sure why, do you have any other exercises that might help?
You might want to check out this video. If that doesn't help, then you would need to sign up for a one-on-one lesson so we can investigate the problem more. ruclips.net/video/7OvkxDw6dzA/видео.html
You are an angel. :)
Thanks! I try to do what I can. :)
Amazing video thank you ❤️❤️❤️🥰😘😍
You're welcome
great video! Thanks!
Thanks for watching!
is it true that there is more tension in neck region during winters?
I've never heard of that before, so I can't really comment on it. Perhaps if it's very cold and you're shivering a bit, the muscles might tense. But at long as you're indoors and somewhere warm, that shouldn't be too much of an issue.
Can you search Bradley Norwood singing I my don't sound right and I don't know what to work on
IT WAS REALLY PRACTICAL TNX
thanks a lot very helpful!
thank you! helped a lot.
You're very welcome.
Really Helpful ! :D Thanks bro ! :)
