    Thankyou Marnell! I'm actually a teacher myself and I've been really trying to find the most effective way of describing the singing sensation and I think I've finally just found it! In my own vocal journey I had a lot of trouble with understanding the support mechanisms and wish I'd come across this earlier, would have saved me years of unhealthy tension and vocal fatique problems. Thanks again!

      Jacqui Ellison Wow, I'm honored that this has helped you. I'm always looking to network with other teachers. Feel free to hit me up, as I have some other (better) methods that I haven't released yet, because I just haven't figured out how to effectively describe it in video format yet.

    I have recommend your channel to all my singing friends! I have been looking for clear explanations for all these things you have been covering in your video for years! I've been taking singing lessons for 10 years and not one has covered the subjects so thoroughly! Can't wait to put these into practice for my grade 8 singing pieces! Thank you!!

    This is so awesomely wonderful thank you so much, I am attempting to make a joyful noise to my LORD and Savior Jesus Christ as part of the choir at my church and I have heard people say "you have to breath deeply", but that did not help me at all because as you so beautifully demonstrated it is so much more to singing than just breathing deeply. I LOVE you and thank you so much.

      It's hard to say exactly why without seeing what you're doing. The best way to address it would be in a one-on-one lesson.

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  8 лет назад +1

      Honestly, it's hard to say, because there are so many wrong ways to do an exercise, many more than I can count. And sometimes, you will do something that's only specific to you and no one else since all of our bodies are a bit different. So it's really hard to say.
      All I can say is if it's causing you tension for now, abandon the exercise until you can afford a lesson and get proper real time feedback on YOUR particular issues.

    How this is so so helpful, I did not know singing with your diaphragm could help so much with so much technique in singing. I was just singing with air passing through my throat, but now I know, with practice, singing with my diaphragm will make me sound so much better.

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  7 лет назад +1

      Yes, there is a lot that goes into technique. Getting your diaphragm to work with the sound is a small part of it. The even larger part of singing technique is getting your vowels right. :)

    great videos!
    yesterday after practicing, my back muscles actually felt a little tired (under the ribs and on each side).
    i had been focusing on the expansion feeling so i guess they were doing their job! thanks

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  10 лет назад

      diggs If this is your first time using these muscles, yes, they can get a bit sore. When I first practiced some of these breathing exercises, the area near my lowest ribs would get SO tired and fatigued! But as you get more accustomed to it and more aware of the subtle nuances that make it more efficient, you won't experience that anymore.

      maeshelll Oh wow! That sounds like a pretty serious surgery! I'm glad you've made it through, though. Did you have to do any type or rehabilitative exercises afterwards?
      Many of the singing principles that I endorse revolve around trying to minimize the activity in the neck musculature as much as possible, so this should be right up your alley. Looking forward to lessons with you! :)

    This is awesome! you explained it so clearly and the practical examples you provided indeed work! question, is this a strenghtening exercise for support? because i already have good support, but ive never seen anyone explain it this way, and the result is that my support suddenly engaged much more! as well as i feel like i can gradually control it more which makes a ton of difference! just curious if its an actual exercise or just a kind of a lesson to "steer" us in the right direction? because it seems like a great exercise! to both awaken support and strenghthen!

    • @VocalLiberation
      @VocalLiberation  8 лет назад +1

      +Misael V. This isn't a strengthening exercise -- it's just a coordination exercise. Teaching you how to feel those deep, inner muscles. But it's good you're feeling more strength from it!

    This is interesting - I started practicing this exercise, did the posterior pelvic tilt variation like you show, close my mouth and try to blow air to puff the cheeks, felt the back working exactly how you described.. and then I corrected the posture and focusedon replicating the same sensation. I did this several times without making any voice.. and then when I suddenly went to make a voice, it got stronger, fuller, and infact easier to produce.. it works almost like magic, how come?

      You're just reminding your body of how it needs to work when you use your voice. That's all. :)

    I've never quite understood this approach. From what I understand, we create subglottic pressure by compressing the lungs, whereas this pushing down and out seems like it should expand the lungs. However, it clearly works - I can get a lot of intraoral pressure (and hence subglottic pressure, given that the glottis is open) by doing this. How does it work?

    I really enjoyed your video. I've read about and watched many breathing techniques but none of them helped me understand how to do it. Your video helped me understand how to breathe from the diaphragm and how to know if I'm doing it right. I really would love to learn how to be a singer that actually sounds good. Only experience I have is singing at home. Do you provide singing lessons for beginners.

      Nichole Turner Thanks for watching my videos! I'm glad they are helping you. I do indeed provide lessons for beginners. Shoot me an email with a clip of you singing so I can provide an assessment and let you know the best course of action to take.

    Marnell, I comment to show my appreciation to your videos and also to ask if you could do some kind of video on voice types and if there are some tricks on how to strengthen each one. Is there a high note limit for each of them? Thank you :D

      +Bernat Sacarès Simon Thanks for commenting! I do have something in the works for voice types. In the meantime, there is no specific trick for any voice type, as the training is exactly the same regardless of your voice type. The only difference is where your voice wants to LIVE (how high or low your feel COMFORTABLE singing) and the natural intensity behind the voice. There generally isn't a high note limit for the voice types, but the range you feel comfortable LIVING in tends to be somewhat consistent between the types. For instance, baritones are normally comfortable living in the range from G2-Bb4 in SONGS -- LIVING there meaning that with proper training, they can control all the notes in that range and have no problem singing any of the notes, give or take a note. I sometimes call this your "realistic range" rather than your "absolute range", which is simply just any note you can get out of your system outside of any real musical context.

    Hey Marnell I have a question, in another video you say that the solar plexus should have some give to it to avoid throat tension, does that apply to this exercise?

    Thank you so much Marnell, you're such a brilliant teacher! I want to ask you about this exercise.. I am just a bit unsure whether I tense up too much when I push down and out. I feel like my abs get really hard and everything feels a bit too tense. Is this desirable? Thanks, Linda

      The biggest thing is to always pay attention to how it feels in your throat. If whatever you're doing is causing your throat to tense more and more, then it's probably wrong. The throat should still feel relaxed as you are applying these ideas. Check out my video called "How to release throat tension"
