This was the woman who had Mike Bordin and Robert Trujillo re-record the drums and bass on Ozzy's first two records, just so she could screw over Bob and Lee and their royalties. I'm sure if she could, she would would have the songs re-written too.

Ozzy gets sole credit for writing the words and music to the title track "Bark at the Moon." Been meaning to ask him how TF he came up with the main riff,guitar solo and especially the insane outro solo! Must've been hell for Jake to cop Ozzy's incredibly intricate guitar compositions.

Not a proud moment for Trujillo either: "Sharon tried to erase Bob and Lee's contributions by re-recording the bass and drum parts on these records with Ozzy's then-current band members, Robert Trujillo (now with Metallica) and drummer Mike Bordin. The original versions of the albums disappeared."

I went to a Carmine and Vinny drum clinic a few years ago. he was already well over 70 at the time. I went in more interested in Vinny because of Dio, but man, he could not hold a candle to Carmine. Carmine was confident and in charge, but not arrogant. He asked the audience what they wanted to learn. one guy asked for odd-time stuff, and I couldn't believe how he just played in 5, 7, 9, etc. just right off the cuff like it was nothing. He is a drummer's drummer. Everyone saw first hand why Bonham held this man in high regard.
Yep, Carmine is the real deal. Buddy Rich liked him too.
I think the marketing sort of hurt him. Double edged sword there though. You need to be seen and don't want to come off as arrogant or conceited.
Regardless, his drumming stands on it's own. I really don't feel Carmine get the credit he deserves.

I can't stand her yet for the longest time I had a crush on her. Up until 2014 or so? One video for that UK version of some American Idol knockoff (The Voice?) she is doing vocalist auditions. She's cracking jokes, not too mean to the singers even when making fun of them and her smile was so absolutely adorable I wanted to kiss her right through the screen. Was real envious of Ozzy for some time after that.

True story: I was at the Rainbow Bar & Grill (on Sunset Blvd in Hollywood) years ago & Sharon Osbourne accidentally bumped into me, causing my just-bought Heineken beer to fall on the floor. You would think someone of her status would kindly buy/get me a new one, but she smugly said "oops, sorry" & kept right on walking away.
Because of who her Dad is, she's been that way her whole life. It gave her lifelong confidence to be able to treat people however she chose

Carmine Appice on Paul Stanley's first solo record, more specifically the number 'Take Me Away, (Together As One), is legendary drumming in the highest degree.

I love Carmine’s playing for sure. I believe he only played on one tune on Paul’s record. He had a good drum part. He is absolutely obsessed with himself. I’ve listened to so many interviews and I just don’t believe some of it. Paul Stanley I believe didn’t want to work with him. He wasn’t getting more press than Jake E. Jake E had his own tour shirts and they were pushing Jake everywhere after Randy died. I do love his playing and sound on Blondes Have More Fun. He did crush those drums. But, he’s also been in some bad bands like Carmine and The Rockers.

Love this guy. I like that he’s not afraid to talk positively about himself and what he’s done. You need that confidence to survive in that business. I know some find it to be bragging and don’t like it but the guy’s been a rockstar since 1968 and has the talent to back it up. He’s just open to the public, while other musicians are obsessed with the same stuff and then fake the polite, aw shucks routine for interviews.
Talking positive and being confident is one thing, but he has the chops to back up the confidence too. Spot on.

There's a HUGE difference from playing live to studio work. Huge. Apparently Tommy's timing isn't very good in a studio environment. Live, yes, he's absolutely phenomenal

Carmine's talent was apparent to me back when BBA played live in Japan in the early '70's. Carmine was even kickin' it in the late '60's with Vanilla Fudge.
Sharon's treatment of Appice was due to him having a manager and making sure things like getting paid for proformance and possible royalties on any further record royalties (if the latter was in his contract) and that was Sharons problem right there cause it made it hard to FUCK Appice over the way she did all the other band members .Bob .Lee Randy's Family .Jake and these were just the members from the beginning of Ozzys band .and i hate saying Ozzys band like that cause in the beginning it was a band "The Blizzard Of Ozz Band" to be exact .members that had agreed to give Ozzy half the income generated by the group while Randy .Bob .Lee .split the other half equally between the 3 .and that wasn't good enough for those greedy fucks .they wanted to pay every musician a weekly proformance amount and nothing in royalties .even though they created the majority of the music (Especially those first 2 Blizzard Band recordings) but at least Randy and Bob got their writing credits and also production credits .which all changed by the Bark Of The Moon Albums release sayn all songs written by Ozzy .which is a TOTAL joke considering he didn't create the music or write any of the lyrics .Bob and Jake created the songs and Bob wrote all the lyrics .only thing Ozzy really did on that record was coming up with the albums title "Bark Of The Moon" which he thought up while Randy was Still Alive .but yeah maybe that and a few melodies at most .but than takes all the credit for every aspect of the Record .Wicked and Greedy Witch that one was
BUT Ozzy is coming up with the melodies. Which is composition. I just have to correct you there. He did the same in Sabbath. Words are useless in a song if someone doesn't sing them. And what they sing for each word is a note. It can be written down just like any other piece of music. Ozzy is a melody man. He showed in Black Sabbath he could write lyrics, and "The Writ" is something that says he's a very good lyric writer. A lot better than someone that mentions rainbows as much as they can, hoping to copyright that word so no one else can use it.
This isn't written in defense of the actions of Sharon & Ozzy. It's written to say the idea that Ozzy Osbourne contributes NOTHING to a song, is a gross fiction. If Ozzy hadn't contributed anything to a Black Sabbath song, you wouldn't be singing anything. He's the guy who came up with how it got sung. They're just words on a sheet of paper for an instrumental song, until Osbourne puts melody to those words. Whether Geezer came up with them or not.
He did more than come up with the album's title. He came up with the melodies for those words Daisley writes.
Sharon, on the otherhand, is another story.
At the same time, Carmine might be his own worst enemy. Not disagreeing with any of his claims, and he is always consistent in these claims with what he says. Carmine is just very much about Carmine. He's bigger in his head than I remember him to be in the 1980's. But at the same time, I definitely knew who he was when I was a kid. So it's not that he's exaggerating his public profile at this time, he was very in the public's eye.
How important he was to everyone who saw him in that public eye, is where he gets a bit lost.

When Black Sabbath songs are credited Iommi / Osbourne / Butler / Ward, this is completely accurate and fair. They were all contributing to this groundbreaking band. Equally. To my ears, they are the true start of heavy metal. Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin were still in the territory created by Jimi Hendrix and Cream. It's heavy blues rock. Black Sabbath made things sound truly terrifying.
Iommi is their riff lord. He's the one giving them the tunes.
Butler is their main lyric writer. He's giving them their identity.
Osbourne is their melodist. In the music industry, and throughout history, MELODY is the most important part of composition. The melodies of Lennon & McCartney are praised, particularly McCartney. When Bernie Taupin submits lyrics to Elton John, he does not provide also the notes to which they are sung. Elton John comes up with that, along with music to accompany that melody. This is exactly what Osbourne is doing. Iommi's claim that he just followed the riff, only happens in 2 or 3 songs in their catalog. "Iron Man" most specific. It's really the one song where Osbourne uses that to come up with a melody.
When you get to "Changes", that's Osbourne composing the melody to Iommi's piano accompaniment.
And Bill Ward makes it all work.
It is an equal partnership. How a band should be. If Eleanor Rigby received its correct writing credits, which are McCartney / Harrison / Starkey (because they contributed lyrics to that song. Harrison came up with its hook "all the lonely people") they'd probably still have been a band by 1980. But that's not how that operation runs. That's Lennon & McCartney pursuing fame and swimming pools and everything Pop has to offer. And they pretty much sold out George & Ringo immediately after attaining it. But they paid the price when they lost songs for 50 years or so! You play as sharks, you deal with sharks.

Then when it was done the bleep said, what are ya gonna do about it. We have all ya guitar parts, we will get another guitarist to go out on tour and you can go home without a penny to your name. Has Jake ever revealed how much per show he got on that tour?
I hope he wasnt getting screwed like the members in Dio's band. They were only getting like 350 per week on the first door then then it was bumped to 550 per week and no royalties. Average Joes were making as much as they were a week. haha
@@DrTomoculus Yeah, Ozzy had good melody ideas for the vocals. The best example I have heard, is the bootleg Sabbath song with Dave Walker on vocals, which would evolve into the song Junior's Eyes when Ozzy came back. Without Ozzy's vocal melody, the song is pretty boring and uninteresting. The finished album version is just so much better, with Ozzy's vocals.
Carmine is a great guy. I've got to hang with him on several occasions. Twice with his brother Vinny backstage. Both are hilarious together. His accounts of this is literally what he told me - word for word.
Definitely check out Artists on Lockdown-'Hangin' n' Bangin" with his brother. It was a chat show they did during the pandemic. The show was hilarious.

It's very simple. Sharon made a vow from the very beginning that there would never be anyone in the band who sang better than Ozzy. She knew his voice was weak and would never risk him being upstaged or embarrassed by a sideman. That's why Lee Kerslake was fired and it's why in 45 years she has NEVER hired a single musician who can sing backup vocals live. With Carmine she thought she was hiring a sideman, but once she heard Carmine singing at soundcheck when Ozzy was too drunk to show up, she fired him. Carmine might not even know this, but that's what happened. Insecurity more than anything else. She always knew who her meal ticket was and she was loyal.

Well, Bob Mason was offstage singing for Ozzy sometimes. Let's be realistic. Ozzy has some talent, but he's been lucky to be surrounded by people far more talented than him for 50 plus years.

Tim Bogert lived down the block from the Action House in Island Park, NY., a very popular club, that hosted all the big name acts in the '60s. BBA used to rehearse at Tim's house, and we got to see them do a couple of songs.

I seen OZZY in 1984 at Kalamazoo for Bark at the Moon concert and was FN great show we had general admission seats on the floor at the stage. Those were the days when concert tickets was 10 bucks for general admission!

I saw the BATM tour in 84 in Toronto, but Carmine was already off the tour by then.
Re: the insanity between Sharon & Ozzy back then, Carmine is leaving out important context - everyone was whaled on coke at that time. Right after this tour was the end of Ozzy's truly insane era.
I do remember the press conference when Ozzy was asked why Carmine had left the band. Ozzy responded, "He had to leave for medical reasons. He was making me sick."
Carmine is a classy, great guy as well as a classy great drummer.

BTW I placed the microphones on Carmine's drums on the Pink Floyd Momentary lapse of Reason Tour in Columbus Ohio. Never got to meet him though. I was working in a casino showroom when Dokken came back out with Great White with Jack Russell. I was placing microphones around Mick Browns kit as he was setting them up. He was drumming for Don Dokken as he has in the past as well as Nugent. He was driving me crazy. That guy is a hoot buddy. He fucks off and has fun 24/7. If you ever get a chance to meet Mick Brown don't miss it. Anyway, growing up in the 60's and into a young adult in the very early 70's I was a Cactus fan and still am. Those songs are great. Right up there with the bands that came after and got to ride the arena rock wave before we had arenas anywhere but the biggest cities in the country.

Carmine had a classic drum book out with Realistic Rock, was writing in Circus every issue on various rock drummers & I think even International Musician Magazine; he was everywhere back then. Plus, Carmine was a top Ludwig endorser all through the 70's (he sold a ton of drum sets for Ludwig) and was doing clinics left and right plus week long Ludwig Symposiums. I could see Sharon getting pissed, cause her view would be 'we own Carmine' and she wasn't getting money out of all the other things he did. Some people are just crazed.
That’s what I believe happened to Zack. I remember watching a MTV awards show and Zack walked out onto the part of the stage that goes out into the audience. I thought, oh Zack don’t do that bro Sharon isn’t gonna like that. It wasn’t to long after that he was fired.

It's just crazy that Sharon would give Carmine such a hard time. Carmine was a huge benefit to Ozzy. Carmine was a draw, one of the best drummers of all time. If anything, he helped ensure high ticket sales and publicity for the tour. Aldridge is great, but Carmine was a real draw in 1984.
I can understand the dilemma with Carmine having his name in big letters on his bass drums. I understand Carmine knows how sell himself, but it looks a little detached from the OZZY Osborne band - brand, and I've read that was one objection, I can see the conflict of interests here.... There probably wasn't a way to harmonize this long term.
I stopped buying anything Ozzy related after I learned what Sharon did to Jake. I know it means shit to them or anyone, but still. But I do love Zakk and buy his stuff whenever I can.

Listening to Carmine at the start of this conversation gives me impression he went into the Ozzie gig with a “star” attitude, as opposed to being a drum accompanist. That might have rubbed her up the wrong way. But then I could be wrong. 🥁🙂
Sharon' come a wealthy family her father is the one that pioneered these business tactic. WIKI Don Arden, born as Harry Levy on January 4, 1926, was an English music manager, agent, and businessman. He played a pivotal role in shaping the careers of several rock legends, including Jerry Lee Lewis, Little Richard, Gene Vincent, Air Supply, Small Faces, The Move, Black Sabbath, and Electric Light Orchestra1. Arden was known for his aggressive and sometimes illegal business tactics, earning him nicknames like “Mr. Big,” the “English Godfather,” and even the “Al Capone of Pop” in Britain1.
Born into a Jewish family in Cheetham Hill, Manchester, Arden began his show-business journey at the age of 13 as a singer and stand-up comic. He briefly attended the Royal College of Music before changing his name from Harry Levy to Don Arden. After being demobilized from the British Army after World War II, Arden returned to civilian life and developed his show-business career. He worked as an entertainer on the British variety circuit, impressing Jewish audiences with his Al Jolson routine. Arden also tried his hand at impersonating singers like Enrico Caruso and film actors known for gangster roles, such as Edward G. Robinson and George Raft. His record release included a version of “Blue Suede Shoes” where he attempted to impersonate Elvis2.
Arden’s career as a manager took off when he signed up American rock ‘n’ roller Gene Vincent in 1960. However, their relationship ended abruptly when Vincent reportedly pulled a knife on Arden due to his compulsive alcoholism. Arden also briefly worked with British singer Elkie Brooks at the start of her career. His success story turned sour when his aggressive business tactics and questionable accounting practices caught up with him, leading to estrangement from members of his own family1.
Notably, Sharon Osbourne, the television personality, entertainment manager, and author, is Arden’s daughter. Despite their rocky relationship, they eventually reconciled near the end of Arden’s life.

Saw the Houston Bark show and had the pleasure of seeing Carmine, his solo was definitely a show highlight. Sharon is jealous and vindictive and seems to do whatever she can to hurt those who helped make Ozzy successful. Ozzy isn’t innocent in it either. In the MTV live concert video and radio broadcast soon after Carmine was fired, Ozzy digs Carmine saying “And on drums I’m very glad to say we have Mr Tommy Aldridge”. Ozzy is abusive, he punched Randy Rhoads in the face according to Bob Daisley (for refusing to do Speak of the Devil as that was planned before he was killed) and also punched bassist Don Costa in the face according to Jake E Lee. Sharon and Ozzy have screwed over so many who have helped them. Jake said Ozzy told him “I got screwed in Sabbath so now I’m screwing you and you can screw over your own band when you have one”.
Her father was even worse.
I think the toxic tragedy of Sharon Osbourne is that she resented her father, Don Arden, for being such an evil guy, and yet she ended up being completely tainted by his example. She resurrected Ozzy's career, and we're all grateful for that. But she did so at the expense of the artists who supported him. She might be the most vindictive woman in rock n roll.
Sharon Arden…..Don Arden is her dad. Don Arden is one one the meanest manager’s EVER! Led Zep’s Peter Grant was trained by Don Arden.

I studied with Carmine in Oceanside for a bit in the 70’s. Very cool guy… not pretentious at all.
No one that ever worked for Ozzy and Sharon were ever as big before or after. Say what you want but Ozzy has some sort of secret sauce for bringing the best out of people even if they get screwed in the end.
I am not a person who believes in the opinions of other people that often. I know from firsthand experience that someone is not a bad person just because another person says so. But in the case of Sharon, I really believe the public opinion surrounding her and her attitude. There are just too many people in metal who have had bad run-ins with her. When a group of decent people keep saying the same things about her, you must realize it is true
I love this story. I have to say though, Carmine really ain't no angel. I have memories of him playing with King Cobra around Fort Eustis in Newport News, Virginia (can't remember the club name...). I got everyone off there asses on the floor. I got the Johnny Rod fist pump. They played so loud and hard they blew speakers (and they were not even theirs...lol, they belong to another group there) I met Carmine and the guys during a break...giving them props and support. All of them were...appreciative... but cold. I get it, shit gets old, having everyone come up and tell you how great you are and how you influenced their life. He has the same attitude in this interview as he did back then. I'm great...I'm a good guy and I do good things...but that guy over there is shit... and that guy screwed me...and look at me I saved the day but was unappreciated...bla bla bla. I really like Carmine. I have purchased his books way back when I was gigging a bit myself. I follow his success and the music he has just killed it on...but, I just don't have that degree of respect for him that I might have for someone else. I just wish he was more humble and real. I think his brother Vinnie is a rock star in his own right and a blast to watch and listen to. To me Vinnie is much more down to earth, honest and true...of course Vinnie didn't try to screw my girlfriend at a show either.

And to add to my last comment maybe Sharon realized Ozzy at that point was just a mess and maybe she realized that God damn if I don't step up and do something we ain't going to have s***and her being a woman maybe she had to play extra dirty to not be taken advantage of. And I think it really sucks for a lot of people to hear this about Sharon and Ozzy because they don't want it to be true and I'm sure there's some of it that is but just because you didn't turn out to be as rich as they did that doesn't mean you were screwed over. I mean for f***** sake the band is called Ozzy Osbourne... And they were probably like yo you can get more money but you're going to start paying for half of everything else that's got to be paid for just like we do
