I remember them so well! Gorgeous gorgeous skaters. I remember when Randy was injured before the Olympics, poor Dick Button was beside himself! So upsetting.
Just beautiful even now in 2019. The joy of youth & hard work. Man. Oh what if... 1980 shouldve been a contest of Youth & Artistry v. Experience & Certainty. Alas... On judging, we know how it is. Remember '02? What a joke! Can this nation produce an OC & WC? Yes, but it will be far different from 1979. This was so special. 🔥
Well we finally have another world championship pair team from USA... And their sixth place finish the Olympics was a huge step in the right direction as well. We'll have to see if Alexa and Brandon continue. As encouraging as it was to see these great results from them I don't believe there's too many waiting in the wings in the USA with their level of talent.
@@mikeg8375 We can always support the sport & USFSA. Never give up because talent is everywhere. As long as there are coaches who care about the sport there's always a future. Kids watch & are motivated. Reality is closer than we think. Talent comes to America to flourish.
It’s evident that they spent a lot of time practicing school figures. Yes, I am aware that pairs weren’t required to compete them but it’s obvious from the skating technique that they spent many hours practicing them. It’s also nice to see tall woman skating pairs, it’s aesthetically appealing.
But remember, soviet pair Cherkasova-Shakhrai did an individual triple (!) toe-loops, so difficult tirple-axel (!) twist, individual double axels, and five difficult lifts - and thats was the reason for 5 judges to give higher technical marks for soviet pair, and for 3 judges to marks at first place overall.
Well actually that was first place with that judge remember it is all relative to oridnals and thatjudge still had them first. I am more offended by the patriotism of Dick Button - I mean the Russian pair Rodina and Zaitzev weren't even competing hou can you say who was better. though I think Tai and Randy are much more like today's programs and thus I like them better; Rodina And her partner had something special though.
Why would you be offended??? Dick Button is a former American champion, commentating on American television, for American skaters who just won the World Championships for the first time in almost 30 years! He was beaming with pride! He's not a journalist, he is a commentator. I learned more from Dick Button about figure skating than any other person. He detailed everything you saw, what to look for, and how it was judged. He didn't care if people were offended if he called out a bad position, bad posture, or sub par performance.
@@CG68810 Just like Howard, Dick told it "like it is." He for some seemed to act like he was better & knew more than we, but guess what? He did. Roone Arledge picked the best to comment on sports & Dick was it. He was a Boston Brahmin, but he loved the sport. He was uncle to Peggy Flemming, guiding her to greatness. They were from two different worlds, but that didn't matter. He loved the sport & the people who cared about doing well.
I’d rather listen to Dick Button than Sandra Bezic or Tracy Wilson. His commentary is informative, Sandra is condescending and has a subtle way of being a B. Tracy Wilson talks a lot just to hear herself talk.
And your point? They won. It may have been different if rodnina skated but she didn't so why bring it up. It was an amazing american win. Don't take it away from them. Quite childish and unfair.
@@TJD63 You are a little bit late .It was 2 years ago, but still Rodnina and Zaytsev were the best and them were not even close.I know it is hard to admit, especially now. That is all.
@@oa494 lol late? You're comment was 2 years ago but that competition was loooonng ago so why am I late? I liked her performance better when she was with Alexei Ulanov
I watched this as it happened. It was so sweet how they hugged each other as they skated off the ice.
They had a marvelous style, a special je ne sais quoi...... that was so wonderful to watch! The best pull-Arabians ever.
Loved watching this back in 1979 and again in 2020. Always loved this team.

I love Tai's face when she sees that 6.0! They are gold in our hearts no matter what.
I'm so happy for them they won the gold medal I love you Tai Babilonia & Randy gardener!
Beautiful people 💜
A great memory

So amazing dance :)

And Randy's skate lace broke in the final moments of the performance.
This program is not all too far off from some of the performances of today. Either they were ahead of their time or pairs hasn't advanced that much.
Ни о каком выигрыше не было бы речи, если бы выступали Роднина/Зайцев

Вернулась Роднина и все поставила на место.
They are not even close to Irina and Alexandr and they know and knew that. THE Fact.
