  • San Jose, California, USA - 1996 United States Figure Skating Championships, Men's Long Program - Rudy Galindo skated the program of his life here in front of his home town audience, earning two 6.0s for Presentation and upsetting Todd Eldredge for the National Title. This would be a skate to be remembered for years to come. The arena was electric, chanting "Rudy, Rudy" as Rudy left the Kiss N Cry area with his coaches, his sister Laura Galindo and John Brancato. Note: Since 1990, Rudy has suffered the losses of 2 coaches, Jim Hulick and Rick Inglesi, his father, and his brother, George. The 2 ladies he hugged after finding out he won the National Title were 2 of the skate moms whose kids he has been coaching. What was hard to believe was that 2 of the 9 judges gave him 2nd Place ordinals in the Long Program. Interviews with Rudy, Todd Eldredge and Dan Hollander follow.

      This is what ice skating is all about, not chancing quads which half the Russian teens fret and fall down on. He built on his predecessor John Curry in 1976 and foreshadowed the brilliant Evgeni Plushenko. Such a pity about his HIV diagnosis.

    Probably one of the best, most exciting, and high quality men's long programs in the history of the US Nationals! Everything lined up perfectly for a moment that thrilled all who watched this performance, including the judges. Then when you learn the backstory of Rudy, you realize just what a spectacularly phenomenal and inspirational event you have just witnessed.

    The confelicity I feel towards Rudy even still today is just incredible when I watch this. Makes me think I can do anything. I still get emotional when Dick says "What a triumph" at the very end. So smart of the director to not cut to any replays of the jumps and have Dick talk about them, they knew they were having a moment and to just keep the cameras on Rudy and his sister for the ENTIRE wait for the marks. A more perfect figure skating television moment has never been.

    First, to the fine person behind posting #Axel1996, I owe you a big thank you not only for all of these performances through the years that you have uploaded, but also, you may or may not recall - I THINK I've been following your youtube page for well over a decade; and for this non ice skater, but avid fan, whenever I've posted questions on issues I just was not quite understanding at the time, and for whatever the reason, I thank you for the time and more than that- your patience & kindness in your replies whenever I would follow up questions in trying to fully understand things (ex: one specific time that I haven't forgotten was the difficulty I had at the time in fully understanding the reasons behind the tie breaking situations in Calgary between Boitano and Orser). On that note: YES, I do agree with you here, having just recently viewed Eldredge's LP, the 2 judges who have him those !st place ordinals; a bit dubious. Especially considering they, like the 7 other judges all had the same perspective of first watching Eldredge, and then Rudy having to wait last to skate. hmmm

    • @RaymondHng
      @RaymondHng 3 года назад

      The technical merit mark and the artistic impression mark are added together. Even though the third judge gave him a 6.0 mark for impression, the 5.7 technical mark added to it ranked him at second place. But the majority of seven out of nine judges placed him first. A skater needs at least five out of nine judges placing him first in order to win.

    • @mikeg4576
      @mikeg4576 3 года назад

      @@RaymondHng I know. I was not making a comment on the ordinals or the majority of votes. I was just happy a judge gave him a perfect 6.0. I do think its bizarre though that any judge would have placed him second though, he was the clear winner.

    • @RaymondHng
      @RaymondHng 3 года назад

      @@mikeg4576 As a viewer, you're watching one video that is being switched from multiple cameras to achieve the best view at all times. The nine judges, however, are seated along the entire length of one side of the rink. That's nine different points of view for each individual judge that does not change throughout the entire competition. A skater that performs an element successfully or unsuccessfully on one far side of the rink will get a distant view from the judge seated farthest away from him, but a better view from the judge seated closest to him.

    • @mikeg4576
      @mikeg4576 3 года назад

      @@RaymondHng Splitting hairs... Galindo's performance was clearly better. He made no mistakes. Eldredge did. The judging shouldn't be so technical and advanced that it alienates the fans from being able to decide who the clear winner was, in situations like this where one person's performance was clearly better...

    • @RaymondHng
      @RaymondHng 3 года назад

      @@mikeg4576 It's not splitting hairs. You're giving yourself the false impression that what you are seeing in the video is exactly what the nine judges are seeing. What the camera sees and what one particular judge sees can be different. The judges are not watching the performance on camera along with the television audience. They are watching it with their own eyes. Humans do not have telephoto lens in their eyes that can zoom in on the action. You as someone watching a video have all the benefit of several camera angles, close-ups, and overhead shots. Also viewing angles can be different. The camera can be pointed at 0 degrees at the skater while a judge can be sitting at the opposite end of the rink 60 meters away with his eyes pointed at 180 degrees at the skater.
      Furthermore, the 6.0 judging system is a _relative_ judging system. It is not a point-based system used in the current International Judging System. Skaters do not win by single marks alone. You cannot ignore ordinals, lowest majorities, and factored placements. They all come into play in determining the winner of the competition.

    Honestamente prefiero el patinaje que se hacía a finales de los noventas y en la primera década de los dos mil, porque no se requería de saltos complicados para atrapar a la audiencia, sino que se realizaban rutinas verdaderamente artísticas, además de que se podía ver en cada patinador la pasión y amor que tenían por el deporte. En la actualidad puede que existan saltos y secuencias más complejas, pero para mi ya no hay tanto valor artístico como antes, ahora solo es ver quien puede conseguir más puntos con saltos más complicados, y el tiempo que antes se usaba para la interpretación artística, ahora solo es un preámbulo para el próximo salto

    This program was brilliant. And he won without doing a single quad jump! So much emphasis today is put on doing quads. I would rather see a program with beautiful artistic impression that captures the audience rather than a robotic program with nothing but quad jumps.

    A follower of skating for many years, there are 5 performances I watch over and over, spellbound each time: Tai and Randy 1979 Worlds LP, Katerina Witt 1987 Worlds LP, G&G 1988 Olympics LP, Rudy Galindo 1996 US LP, and Yuna Kim 2010 Olympics LP. But Rudy's performance is the only one that leaves me smiling and crying at the same time. Plus, Dick Button is absolutely adorable here, love him.

      I agree but u would add midori ito's worlds 1989, and a few of Michelle kwan's programs. Both 1998 so and lp at nationals and 2004 lp tosca at nationals! Those crowds where hyped up after lol
