- Edmonton, Alberta, CANADA - 1996 World Figure Skating Championships, Men's Long Program - Todd Eldredge of the United States skated a perfect program to win the Long Program, and thus, winning his one and only World Title.

4:10 gets me everytime -- RIGHT on the crash of the music he lands that MASSIVE triple axel. Both him and Kwan were so screwed by the Olympics moving from 1992 starting in 1994. Cause they were at the ABSOLUTE BEST in 1996.
That second triple axel was one of the most perfect triple axels ever performed. And you’re right - it was timed so well. What a beautifully constructed program. What also gets me is Rudy Galindo’s genuine happiness for his teammate and competitor.
I believe I understand what you are intending to express here, which was the IOC decision to switch from both a Summer and Winter Games every 4 years (aka a Quadrennial; which btw starting with the 1st separate Winter Games in '24 in Chamonix, except for '28, the IOC began a short lived policy that awarded one nation as the host for both Summer & Winter Games. After WWII, this policy was discontinued) to capitalizing on the hugely financially successful LA Games, in which for the first time, an Olympics ended with a huge profit from private and corporate sponsorships, versus the previous Games that were huge financial disasters. By changing to an Olympic Games format every 2 years, & keeping it that closer in the public memory, it made for much higher corporate sponsorship & commercial deals. Thus, the decision to have those 94 Games in Norway. I completely agree with the very high likelihood that both Eldredge and Kwan, both being in good physical and mental shape at these Worlds (compared to the years of Eldredge's lower back pain, and what one can only guess for Kwan in '98 and '02 was dealing with another American, free from injury and -even with hypothetically Kwan skating her best AND cleanest LP's- in both cases each having without question far superior technique that not even Kwan's artistic marks could be enough for any tie breakers. BUT, you only mention 98 and 02. As far as Kwan's best years of skating when healthy, my favorite is still 04 if I could just take it based on her nationals LP. With all of the overwhelming Olympic year pressure she faced, plus really never known for having any significant triple-triple's as consistent technical weapon, it saddens me to say but I never saw her as having been in anyway robbed of winning an Olympic Gold. Her meat and potatoes were nationals and those 5 world titles. And look at her 5 world titles. Did she win an outright gold with EVERY other serious contender- especially those with a serious triple-triple- skating clean and healthy/uninjured? Maybe once?
@@jessicadebernard8210 while I would say I appreciate and would naturally expect such a genuinely happy reaction by Galindo, there is a huge potential for misunderstanding your intention in this case for the use of "what get's me....".
From an English grammatical point of view, and the most commonly accepted use of or for, and intended meaning contextually as use by you here actually doesn't sound favorable towards the reaction itself and potentially even anti that reaction
PLEASE understand WHAT you're intending to express, and ACTUALLY read what you have in fact written before hitting send. Ask if that without any question makes sense to anyone not hearing you saying the words in person.
@@Parker528 The phrase “what gets me” is used to express an emotional response to something, whether good or bad. It’s all about the context of what’s being said. And given the context of my comment and the fact that you admittedly understood what I was saying, the phrase got the point across and was used correctly.
@@Parker528 omg. Too long a post.
I liked Rudy Galindo's smile. It was like he could totally relate to Todd's feelings after finishing his routine.
Todd always had the best final combination spin ever
This program was magnificent! Todd Eldredge is still one of my favorite figure skaters. Very deserving. His hard work showed in this performance.
One of the most underrated artistic Men's free skaters on ice!!!
I would love to see Todd Eldredge commentate during the winter Olympics. One of the most talented US men's figure skating champions on ice.
Hard to choose between this and Galindo, but this was about as perfect as it gets. When I watched it the first time, I wasn’t really taking it in. I watch it now and I’m like, “Wow!”
This particular score composition is the best arranged music for a program, I have heard. It's so powerful and grandiose for such an expressive skater like Todd Eldredge.
Todd, my name is tab. I know this is going to sound unreal but please believe me. Your parents were friends of my late aunt Barbara. That's right. This is her niece. Your an AWESOME athleate and amazing and very dramatic skater and I love that about you. Never compromise that. Don't give into the stupid judges. To them your a threat because your a real man. Stay true to who you are. I'm proud of you. Happy thanksgiving my friend
Thank for liking my comment Todd. Have a blessed thanksgiving. Stay safe Todd. Hugs
Merry Christmas Todd. I hope you will experience peace. Hope, joy, and be given a fresh sense of vision and direction for what it your suppose to do
Hey god loves you, he has a purpose and plan for your life Jeremiah 29;11-14. Hey if your not going anywhere for Christmas your invited to my church's service either online on RUclips or you can come in person
My churches name is vox church. I would love to see you or know your attending online
I ALWAYS ADMIRED THIS KID HE IS A FIGHTER!🥇🏆HATS OFF TO YOU TODD🏆🥇🇺🇸
I love him so much. This never gets old. If he skated this way at the Olympic in 1998, he likely would have beat Elvis for silver.
He"s one of my favorites
Happy 25th Anniversary on your Worlds Gold, Todd!!
A great match of skater and program
I wish he could've won the Olympic gold 🏅
The guy could really spin!!!
All of the technical jumps are amazing but there’s something so simple yet beautiful and elegant about the one at 3:48
The vest contrasting against the shirt really made for a beautiful-looking jump. Like a spinning top or something. I don't know exactly how to word what I mean.
Amazing performance
Superb!
Spot on Todd, flawless. Well done. By the way you look incredible in blue its your color
Yes, Eldredge and Kwan would have won gold had the Olympics been in 1996.
I’d have given him the 6.0 for technical (don’t think quads were common enough yet to have hammered him for not having one). Probably 5.8 at most for presentation. He’s in time with the music and has a great look in the ice but there’s no Emotional/intellectual investment in the program as such.
Remember they had to leave room for Kulik in case he did better. Giving Todd a 6.0 at this point would’ve been too obvious a show of favoritism.
Sure but you could give Kulik 5.9/5.9 to still give him the ordinal. But point taken that you prob shouldn’t give a 6 when someone capable of quads is still coming
Wow
WTH was Austria thinking??!
What was the Austrian judge watching !?!
Todd my name is Tabitha Sabella, I'm the greatniece of Barbara urqheart. Your parents were friends with her. I tried to connect with you on linked in, and you didn't respond. Do you think that when you have time would you be okay with connecting with me on linked in
While I like Eldridge for his clean lines, interesting angles on his jumps and superb spinning, he was no better than Stojko when it came to artistry and my god has anyone ever taken a longer, less choreographed run up to a triple axel? The entire first 30 seconds of his program are just his crossovers. And people complained Sasha Trusova's olympic program was 'empty' with 5 quads
When I see this looking back, I just try and focus on the excellence of the athlete and of this wonderful accomplishment. I try not to think of what Todd has become, which is beyond heartbreaking. A fact denying, conspiracy theorist, Trump worshipping cult member. How sad for him, and for those around him.
He‘s slow and doesn't have many choreo, just stroking and jumps
If Kulik had been older and the competition had been held in Europe, Ilia would have been the winner
Also this program has some of the worst music ever
Skating was at its best in the mid 1990s.
Don't forget Plushenko and Yagudin.
I remember the first time I watched his performance. Just move out and into my own apartment. I was broke and couldn't afford cable. One night, after a long day at work, I was searching the five and a half channels my rabbit ear antenna television offered while eating ramen noodles and settled on figure skating in lieu of depressing news or boring game shows. Fortunately, a serious Mr. Todd Eldredge came onto the ice and proceeded to blow my mind with strong mesmerizing turns that I didn't know the names of. It was truly amazing to see and near the end when he spun my jaw dropped. To this day the only word I can use to accurately describe it is magical. He spun so fast with such control that I didn't realize until he finished that I had been holding my breath. He's the reason I became a fan of figure skating and gave me something to look forward to watching after work during that first difficult year on my own. He'll always be the best and my favorite figure skater of all time.
As long as you're not referring to
No 0 No question at that moment when you called back and unfortunately I forgotten I'm a little tired right now so I'm going to bed and I'll try to remember the name of the restaurant but I believe it was an Italian restaurant. Upscale Italian.
I admire Tod, he has such a class in his skating! Beautiful beautiful skating technique!
Such a beautiful skater. I love watching him on the ice...He's pure elegance.
Sasha Airesse I couldn't agree more! What a magical performance!
:) Thank you for your comment :) He's such an elegant skater with amazing spins - beautiful. Have a wonderful Sunday Gail S.
I love this performance. The height of the jumps, the elegance of the spins, and the choreography were just perfect. The music was an excellent choice. It added so much to the program.
No one does a scratch spin anymore, and that is so sad. It was always a fantastic sight for the ending of the program. Todd Eldredge was really on top in this performance.
Todd Eldredge proved to be the Gold Medal Winner at the 1996 World Figure Skating Championships. He had all the terrific jumps and the artistry was first rate!
Rick Mileske Todd’s artistry fit his style of skating. Todd was more in the the Brian Boitano mold. He was never flashy, but it was still very fluid and elegant.
So do I! He's my all time favorite men's skater, so I really have a soft spot for him. I wish Todd and Kurt had Olympic medals, but they have both had great, long careers.
He was a skater everyone could appreciate.
Wow, haven't seen this in ages, what an amazing performance. I don't think he could have done it any better!!
He just goes 'RAWWRRR' into the jumps. Love it.
Loved Todd!!! Have not had such a national true champion since him......
One of my fave programs ever of any skater!!!
gracias
I think it is awesome having Brian Boitano praise your jumps!
Second triple axel, the best I have ever seen.
I liked the first one with the toe loop at the end.
Paulo Da Silva boitano kulic really he's good but not superior he's not a legend just a good skater. Average queen
don't you mean king dawg? queen is for woman?
bibi24 LOL, that's not what he meant bibi, that's not what he meant.
Exquisite. Absolutely beautiful. First of all, to land a triple axel, not once but twice, is amazing since that jump is so freaking hard. Second of all, he landed every jump perfectly. And third of all, he was so graceful. It was like watching a powerful ballet. Todd deserved this title. He was wonderful! GOD BLESS!!
Todd Eldredge's triple axel remains one of the best and most powerful that I've ever seen, and the distance that he got across the ice made it that much more impressive.
Holy crap - this is the best men's skate I've ever seen!
Redbeard NC 88 boitano olympics. Paul Wylie 92 Olympics really dude. Lysacek 2010 Olympics
Harvey Chadbourne
Lysacek sucks.
Yorokobi Yos no Lysacek does not or else he wouldn't have an Olympic gold medal.
For the quality of both the presentation and technical elements yes. There have been others as well but this does rank up there.
@@harveychadbourne5180 absolutely agree.
LOVED this! You don't see skaters like this nowadays. He made those triple axels look super easy!
Love this performance! Definitely one of Todd Eldredge's best!
nantinee9 his only clean free skate. FYI nice ass though. FYI his coach is my fantasy daddy
Right Paulo---Best Triple Axle I have ever seen!!!
Mitch Grube Ilya triples were pure much better. Smooth soft gorgeous landings superior to miss thing sorry Russians r better at skating. But go usa
Actually Rudy’s 3axel was pretty.
Does anyone know who choreographed this? Whoever did the choreography was a genius. This program highlights Todd's strengths and he seems so comfortable with it. That final triple axel on the music gives me chills.
Thanks so much for sharing this wonderful performance!
To me, when Todd was "on", he was the best male figure skater of his era (along with Paul Wylie). He was clearly a masculine presence on the ice, while also having a really strong body awareness and sense of the music. His footwork and spins were outstanding, as well. How anyone could give him a 5.7 for technical when he skated lights out perfect is outrageous, especially with a 3A+3T and 3F+3T. A much deserved win!
lcowles hes outstanding!
Agree 100%! ❤️
He skated before Kulik so my guess the judges were leaving room him in case he skated better.
@@jjh2456 That's probably true. I hated the whole "holding the marks" reasoning in the 6.0 era. I understand why they did it, but so many great performances were intentionally under-scored because of it.
What did the Austrian judge say at the Judge's Meeting the next day? I would have loved to hear an explanation of his/her marks!
Easily, they preferred Rudy's style of skating to Todd's.
Fantastic skate! Glad Todd won this World title....his skating was of truly elite quality! He should have won the title again in 1998 if the judging had not held up Yagudin that time, Todd won that freeskate by far. Todd even should have won the Silver over Yagudin at 2001 Worlds instead of the Bronze that time. He was truly remarkable to have been competitive and winning titles and World medals for so long! Contary to a dumb post below, he was NOT the weakest skater to win a world title, far from it! One thing about Eldredge, he continued to be competitive, even finally landing a quad in a competition despite an ankle injury for the last 4 years of his eligible career, upgrading his footwork, continuing to improve his spins, and doing different choreography to keep up with his younger rivals. Amazing skater--my favorite for all those reasons, great athlete and artist!
I couldn't agree more! Thank you for your thoughts!
Not a problem--Todd is one of my favorites of all time! Loved to see him skate!
elvmat1 He IS my favorite, and he's also a gentleman off the ice!
Bad thing is that he fell on his 3Axel in the Short, thus finishing fourth. Furthermore, Yagudin needed someone other than Eldredge and place 3rd or lower in The Long, and it did not happen. Everyone was wishing for Plushenkho to get ahead of Yagudin in The Long, but Plushenkho fell at least twice, hence finishing third after Eldredge and Yagudin. Plushenkho was the decisive factor in Eldredge not winning the title again in '98. In a few words, the same that happened at the 2002 Ladies Final, was what happened here!
+Incredible Mann The "control your own destiny" thing that Terry Gannon would mention.
I am also super glad he is my coach now!!
What? That's awesome.
He is my favorite skater of all time.
love him and this program.
This is a masterpiece!! Some of the best skating then and now!
How can ANYONE DISLIKE this video!???!!
Happy Anniversary on your Worlds Gold, Todd!!
Todd Eldredge was easily the best male figure skater of the mid-90's, bar none. Before the Yagudin/Plushenko rivalry came on the scene a few years later, no one could match Todd's technique and artistry. He's one of the best masculine skaters that had a great bodyline and could also be subtle in his presentation, while still projecting a strong presence on the ice. The ONLY thing he lacked was consistency. Otherwise, Stojko would not have ruled the mid-90's the way he did. It would have been Todd because when he was ON like this, no one was better at that time--not even Kulik, who was very young and immature in his presentation, and never a World Champion. The 1998 Olympic gold could easily have been won by Todd, but the ghost of inconsistency haunted him through his entire career. He's still one of my all-time Top 5 male skaters.
Thank you for writing a wonderful piece. I followed him during his career and I was always concerned when he took the ice. This program, though, showed his great abilities. His skating here is the work of art that I always thought he could throw down. I love this program and was so happy when he won.
Robert: Thanks for recognizing Todd as one of the best. Todd's 2001 World Championships LP (I believe to the 1492 soundtrack) is spectacular, as well. He should have won that World Title too, but by that time, the Yagudin/Plushenko rivalry was in full swing. Plushenko was his usual robotic self, and Yagudin, who was terribly sick, gave an awful performance. Still, the judges didn't want to break the momentum of Yagudin/Plushenko going into the 2002 Olympics by having a third person win the last Worlds before Salt Lake City. So, they threw the title to Plushenko and even though Yagudin gave probably the worst performance of his career and shouldn't have been on the podium, they gave him silver and Todd bronze. Todd should be a two-time World Champion. Check out his 2001 Worlds LP. It's equally as good.
lcowles 2001 worlds and his long program at the 2002 Olympics were amazing. Also you could see a little of Alexi Yagudin’s style here. Over time Alexi got better at the footwork but this was the same type of music Yags liked to skate to.
@@L1623VP IMHO, Todd deserved no less than silver @ 2001 Worlds, but I was still thrilled that he medalled there. He took it very good naturedly.
Okay, maybe it's just how I see them... but most skaters when they enter the flip, it's similar to a Lutz jump. With Eldredge it looks almost like an entrance to a Salchow jump. Anyone else think so?
That aside, this was stunning and I'm so glad he had this championship moment at least once on a world stage - Todd deserved it.
nightswimmer99 it’s funny you say that because the ISU changed the definition of the flip so that the entrance into it looked more like the entrance Todd took as to differentiate between the two jumps. They wanted to catch the flutzers as the straight line a la Michelle Kwan made it hard to catch the change of edge.
both Todd and Rudy were my best leftie male skaters. No other leftie skaters has ever come close to them, in my opinion.
what is your opinion on Toller Cranston and Johnny Weir?
bibi24 Johnny's best jump was the axel.
Denise Biellmann
Todd is right-handed. It's the way he was taught to rotate from his first coach.
Todd was married, but got divorced in 2009 (I think), but recently got engaged again. He is currently living and coaching in southern Florida on the Gulf Coast. As for his performance here, I think it is brilliant, powerful, and passionate. This is the kind of skating I love to watch.
mad props breh thanks for update on his life mang, big ups!
@mlc2005 You make some valid points..but I definitely think his jumps had abandon. That opening triple Axel is absolutely spectacular.
awesome
Absolutely! STILL is, too!
I would hope so!
He never had much spark or flair, but he did pull it together here, and he certainly deserved to win. The one thing he lacked, for whatever reason, was a bit of style and abandonment.
I remember that Urmanov beat out Stojko in 94. Thats why i put that there.
And I think my parents recorded the Grand Prix that Urmanov won. On the same tape as this competition. When urmanov was on i could see it but, he was much more inconsistent in terms of the skating. Eldredge, while title wise not as decorated, was at least consistent. Plus, I know this is personal opinion, but I always looked forward to seeing Eldredge's Triple Axel vs. Urmanov's.
yes on more than one occasion
IIt was a Superb performance I like Rudy's support backstage
He deserved no less than silver @ 2001 Worlds. With all due respect to Alexei Y. (who totally deserved his OGM), he was injured, and skated a very flawed free skate @ 2001 Worlds. I am still annoyed with the judges who had the nerve to place Todd 3rd instead of second. He was practically flawless throughout all 3 phases of the comp. I guess it comes down to the judges' obsession with the "bloody" quad.
You should watch his professional performances! He shines in them.
totally inspirational and awe inspiring
He is divorced from his first wife, but remarried (to a figure skater he trained with in the early 1990's), and they have an adorable baby son.
what is wrong with that aussie judge is he or is she blind or cross eyed. this performance was superior.
Actually, AUT is Austria, not Australia (AUS)
Probably the same Austrian judge that gave Bobek high scores for her two fall freeskate at worlds the year before!
Oh I agree!
@dtw1958 Married a few years ago and is now living and coaching in the north Florida area.
@RanityIsOnThat Yes, it is.
he is my cousin proof is that by name is Jamie Eldredge and he is my cousin he taught be to do a triple flip on ice skates
hell yeah! btw any vids of you skating??
He & his new wife, Sabrina have a son named Ayrton. Sabrina has a son from a previous marriage, Ryder. He coaches on the Gulf Coast in Florida, I think in the Fort Meyers area.
He & Michelle would have won gold if this were an Olympic year, as it should have been. Too bad we got Ilia Kulik - who never won worlds - and Tara Lipinski, a mere blip on the skating radar - instead. Horrible what the re-org of the Olympics did to the 'eventual champs.' In quotes 4 a reason!
@grafgirl27
Stojko and Kulik, I can see the arguement....Candeloro and Eldredge were similar to me, but I can't see Urmanov ahead of him, especially AFTER 1994.
Rudy applauding for Todd as opposed to when Todd just had a smirk when Rudy beat him at Nationals
Todd did NOT have a smirk on his face when Rudy won US Nationals that year. He was disappointed in himself, and was motivated even more strongly to prepare for Worlds. If anything, Todd was very gracious & ultimately thanked Rudy for beating him @ Nationals. No animosity whatsoever!
Oh definetely. He certainly could had beaten Stojko!
DID HE WIN?
Yes, his one and only World title.
@@3Axel1996, yes, but he won a total of six World medals - that's NOT chopped liver!
He also a has a little girl now, or so I've heard from a friend of mine who lives near him.
Too bad this was not an olympic year. Could have possibly won gold.
Always thought Todd was such a rude, snobby queen.
And you sound like a real peach!
Kulik didn't have a mature program but he at least made an effort to skate to the music. Todd's entire first half was just cross cuts and jumps
Stewart M I really liked Ilia's program, but I still felt Todd deserved to win this.
The problem with Kulik's program is that he duplicated the flip. He was supposed to do it in combination but missed it.
The music seemed " loud and oppressive"...great skating in spite of it.
Steven S this was the style of music Todd loved to skate to. It suited him the best.
I bought the soundtrack to "First Knight" because of Todd's performance. IMHO, it's a gorgeous soundtrack, with very powerful parts & sensitive ones.
Is Todd married now and living back in Cape Cod??
Better than Rudy Galindo but Rudy Galindo had better life force.
Always got a case of Olympic JItters.
good skater. is he a gay?
69kellygreen no he has a wife
Great jumps, he looks good, but my god, boring, stiff choreography ! Basically, he's a technical skater.
