MOre than 30 years ago and still they give such an impression. This is absolutely great pair skating!!
Today’s pairs can only wish to do side by side jumps this well. Breathtaking!
It broke my heart that Randy had to pull out before going on the ice at the Olympics where the team were favored to win gold. His injured leg had not healed and I cried. They were so great.
Shining Stars ⭐️ - Took my breath away ! Pride Of The Southland !!
So much to like about this performance but my favorites are the Arabian Pulls at 2:24 and the exquisite spread eagle into an Ina Bauer starting around 4:30
Had they been healthy enough to skate like that the year after in lake placid, there is no doubt they would have upset rodnina/zaitsev. PS I'm soviet.
I think with the two throw jumps and their exuberance yes they would have won. An upset no. They were the faves. World champs and irina coming back from having a kid. They deserve more recognition but such is life.
In your dreams!!!
@@waynehentley4332 that's literally what I said. Thank you, captain obvious. Now, scram
@@tally1604 Tai and Randy were elegant but too slow and wouldn't have upset Rodnina/Zaitsev unless the latter made major mistakes which they very rarely did. Now, buzz off!!
@@skaterboy-cz9wj No. They were not the faves, not after their performance at Nationals. They were prone to making at least one major mistake. They were over hyped by the US media.
Old & not interesting pair.
LOL, she was 18 at the time, and he was 20. And "Hello," it was 1979.
Go away!!!
Baloney
Wonder what you would have thought of the Propotopopovs.
I worry that the younger generation is not familiar with Tai and Randy, but they were exceptional. I saw them win gold at Nationals the following year. I doubt anyone who was there has forgotten it. Thank heaven for RUclips, and 3Axel96, who provides so many great videos.
I’m envious ! But, Happy for You ! Was so glad that I was able to see them on 📺 ! Joyous !
The way they skate together that's magic
This proves it doesn't have to be all quads and triples and ugly positions. The "easier" stuff, done to studied perfection, is spectacular!
Right. But what they are doing was not easy in that era. They were exceptional, and they skated with such ease.
I didn't know pairs was this good 40 years ago.
The Arabian Pulls are absolutely fantastic and the death spiral was breathtaking!
They had THE BEST Pull-Arabians in the history of the sport....just...Snap-Snap-Snap-Snap!
Broke my heart when they couldn't compete in the Olympics due to Randy's injury. So sad.
Yes, I remember Dick Button's absolutely having a meltdown on tv, he was so gutted when the injury happened. I remember him saying, "Well, maybe he (Randy) could do this (lift) instead, when he knew there was no way they could go forward. It was such a shame.
There wasn't an injury. It was a nervous breakdown
You & Everyone Else that were thrilled, watching them Skate !!
Babilonia and Gardner did for pairs skating what Torvill and Dean later did for Ice Dance. We will not see the likes of them again. Thank you for this magic. We will never forget
Magic, is Right ! & No ! We most certainly won’t be forgetting these Unforgettable Two ! GOLDEN ! ⭐️⭐️⭐️Dazzling !
Ein sehr schönes Paar mit einer tollen Ausstrahlung. Ich erinnere mich gern an sie.
Tai is so feminine and graceful. Great figure!!
Such beautiful in-unison positions. 4:33 - 4:41 = unparalleled beauty.
that death spiral, her beautiful arched back and hair touching the ice, amazing. i remember when that was the goal, hair touching the ice.
now the goal is to grab your blade and wrap it around your waist and show an ugly line.
AMAZING! Now, why can't our current crop do that????
very well skated. what happened to them at the olympics the year after that, they didnt even medal?
Randy was injured -- they couldn't skate.
Randy had a groin injury, and tried taking Xylocaine to numb the pain. But it also numbed the leg. Randy tried landing the required 2Flip in the Short Program warm up at Lake Placid, but when he fell, their coach, John Nicks, called for them to withdraw. Such a heartbreaking moment of the Pairs Competition. Afterward, they turned pro.
We will perhaps not see a pair like this. Doesn't mean this country doesn't have talent. But these two were special. Oh, what we would've seen had Randy been 100%. True, judging was rigged. Fratianne getting 2nd may be questioned. It would've been a classic heavyweight battle of a true David v. Goliath. Grace & lifts v. Experience & certainty. Thank goodness for these tapes & You Tube. Let the younger kids know what a talent these two were!
RARE
Emotional !!
I still remember their heartbreak in 1980. They would have won the gold for sure.
Me, too. I was utterly devastated.
AmusedChild I used to think they would have won gold too but upon reflection over the years I sadly came to the conclusion the judges would NEVER have allowed Rodnina and Zaitsev to retire with anything less than gold. Even had Tai and Randy skated a perfect program the political judging of the era would have assured them silver
Does anyone know why they didn’t attempt to come back in 1984? They were still young Tai was 18 Randy 21 in 1980
Totally agree with you. I never thought that Rodnina was all that, but she was the judge's darling, especially after her first partner Ulanov broke up the pair to skate with his fiancé. Tai and Randy could have had the skate of the century and still lost to Rodnina and Zaitzev.
@@valerieteti1755 They turned pro.
Beautiful performance... But the music arrangement is a little peculiar. What did I hear? Star Wars, West Side Story, Don Quixote, and that Russian soldier piece??? Hmmmm
The beginning is actually Holst's "Mars," followed by Duke Ellington's "Ellingotnia," and the ballet "Paquita."
"Mars", "Vortex", "Paquita", and the last piece was "The Bolt" by Shostakovich.
Oh, thanks!
a lot of late 70's/early 80's long programs seemed to jam pack in as many composers as possible - this might be the most extreme case I have seen!
3Axel1996 Brian Orser used music from The Bolt in 1988 Olympics too
