This brings back wonderful memories. My friend Donna and I went to every minute of the '84 Worlds and 25 yrs. later I can say this was THE most exciting live sport event I've ever seen. The feeling in the building that night was absolutely electric!
i just saw this on the internet and at the end I was so carried away and impressed that I spontaniously started clapping in my loungeroom !!! My oh My, it was just wonderful to watch, and I can only imagine how everyone in the building that night would have reacted to it.....one of the best performances I have ever seen, as impressive as Torvill and Dean....thanks so much for posting...
Over 30yrs on and this programme still gives me goosebumps. Their interpretation of the music was first class. Beautiful skate and beautiful music. Soooooooo exciting...I never tire of watching it! Thanks for all the pleasure guys, you were amazing!
I LIVED FOR WATCHING UNDERHILL & MARTINI, and SO DID MY SWEET MOMMA! They are LEGENDS and the Reason/Example for today's High Standards!! Their routines are just as relevant! There are great Pairs BUT, the EASE AT WHICH THEY MOVED, EXECUTED AND ARTISTICLY SKATED IS TRULY UNMATCHED (No Disrepect to all the talented Pairs that give us Thrills)!!! Wherever these Two are in 2020/2021, I HUMBLY BOW TO YOU BOTH AND AM BETTER FOR THE TONS OF HOURS OF WATCHING PURE GRACE AND ELEGANCE ON THE ICE!!!❤ Absolute MAGIC! I'm Grateful that My Mom also loved watching!! I am so moved rewatching that the Tears so Gracefully fall from my Eyes. I pray that you both have been Blessed: You unselfishly shared your GIFT, making this World much Sweeter. God Bless & Good Health! deb in SC 💛❄❄❤
Paul and Barbara You were the Best I Have Ever Seen You Deserved THE Gold Medal, with Abundance, I will Remember You Both Forever. ANGELA xxxxx ENGLAND ❤❤❤❤❤
This is one of those magical performances that we rarely get to see nowadays. They didn't have side by side double axels or triple toe loops but the lifts, throws were second to none! This is a timeless performance, pure magic!
I was in Ottawa at the Civic Centre that evening in 1984, and I can assure you that none of the 10,000 people there that night (including me) will ever forget this performance the rest of our lives. This video can't even come close to the true reaction and electricity in the building during and right after Barb and Paul skated. All these years later, I still say that this was one of the greatest moments in sports I have ever experienced.
I was there and it changed my life. This was the same rink I broke my right knee cap. A clean break. By myself on a practice my dad got for me so I could get use to the ice surface and my surroundings. 3 months later I skated in my first Senior National Championship. Skating a clean short and clean long program. But nothing compares to hearing the crowd on this day back in 1984. My favourite skating moment.
I remember this pair well! My sister & I used to watch & pretend to do the moves along with them. And we'd say we were Underwear and Martini, then die laughing (we were like, 8 at the time lol!)
They packed so much into this programme they were able to make up for not doing difficult side by side jumps. You just end up not caring because everything else is simply exhilerating, including the choreography. ,
@@Dossen_A You argue that pairs isn't just throws, but pairs also isn't just side-by-side jumps. It's silly to say *one element* of side-by-side 3toes is enough to give V&V the victory, especially when combined with two other very obvious errors in the program.
these are beautiful skaters, I want to state my opinion - this also includes the 2002 olympics, Canadians seem to be very stiff from the waist up especially the arms, some people prefere this type of skating but when you see Elana and Anton from 2002 you know what I am talking about. what happened after they won was a disgrace, remember Linda Fratianne in 1980 , that was a sham and no one stood up for her
I can't figure out why the commentators just don't shut up during the performances and allow us to enjoy the beauty. It ruins the entire emotional content with their drivel.
@joe11880 Oh no, don't tell about Eastern Bloc! Here was 9 Judges: 1. Claire Ferguson, USA, 2. Peter Moser, SWI, 3. Sally-Anne Stapleford, GBR, 4. Mikhail Drei, URS, 5. Frances Dafoe, CAN, 6. Junko Hiramatsu, JPN, 7. Gerhardt Bubnik, TCH, 8. Günter Teichmann, GDR, 9. Eugen Romminger, FRG So ONLY 3 judges from socialist countries absolutely impossible to be blocked!
Only home ice and Valova/Vasiliev mistake help it to win. No side by side difficult jumps, only week 2Flip. And two 5,9 for technical merit? I want to ask, if this pair do the triple toeloop like Valova/Vasiliev, judges must to give it 6.2 or 6.3? :))
I just watched the clip for Valova/Vasiliev and there is no comparison outside the individual side by side jumps. Underhill/Martini's performance is polished, incredible triple twist/throw salchow, spins, death spirals, choreography, throw double axel is second to none and lifts are far superior to Valova/Vasiliev. The judges in those days were owned by the Eastern Bloc countries so Canada caught a break. Could have been a repeat of what happened to Sale/Pelletier in the 2002 Olympics.
Here we have a classical example - judges owned by the WESTERN (not Eastern) Bloc of six countries (6 from 9). Programs of Valova/Vasiliev was much more interesting - so many innovative moves, spirals, sequences, many original positions in the spins and lifts, all invented by great Tamara Moskvina!
Ну какие они чемпионы мира? Валова-Васильев были сильнее этой пары.. Надо учитывать, что ЧМ проводился в Канаде... За такое катание в другом месте канадцы бы замкнули тройку.
They are great, and this is a great program. But I have to say it makes me appreciate the transitions and intricate foot work that the pairs of the 90's on have had... This was certainly not a very "artistic" skate at all.
valova & vassiliev should still have won even with that stepout on the throw double axel. and had the championship been held anywhere else, they would have.

I watched this performance live on television, and was on the edge of my seat.
One of the most perfect programs ever. So glad that they won

They were magic on the ice. I love this video. They'll always rank among the best ever.
I was there-and we were all standing up for the last minute!!
What a night!
They were just wonderful. I loved their skating.
The 2022 Olympics are on in the background muted and I'm watching Underhill and Martini videos. Loved them.
I just LOVE them!!! one of my alltime pairs teams!!! :)

4:23 ... The spinning lift is incredible. Wow.

Man when they screwed up they screwed up, but when they were at their best their fluidity and performance is nothing short of breathtaking.
You can't be serious Dossen A? V/V's T2S vs U/M's T3S & Valov fell out of her T2A. U/M were literally flawless.
Pair figure skating is only throws? :)) You don't see 3T by VV?
@@rolandgreen7484 but also UM 2axels didn't planned ever

And Barbara Underhills daughter died in an accident. So sad.
Сочуствую Барбаре.
She was a baby girl. A twin. Somehow she crawled into the family swimming pool and drowned. I cried for her when I heard about it. Terrible tragedy.
