      @@CitiesSkylinesYes but where is the initial sharp crack of the thunder clap? Now (6:58) we heard the same monophonic rumble over and over again. Where are the echos coming from all different directions, bounced off from all the surrounding world? Lightning does not sound the same when it strikes 10 km away (slowly swelling, undulating, subwoofer-demanding distand rumble) or right next to you (one ear-splitting PANG!! With no echo whatsoever.)
      So yes, the sound of thunder is important. There is nothing like the sound of intra-cloud lightning originating at one or two kilometers, straight above you: the onset of sound is a series of separate, sharp cracks, expanding from the zenith, rolling down both sides of you, gradually turning into softer and thicker, heavy rumble, ever lowering accents, resolving into resounding, tumultous ambient rumble receding in the distance.
      Picking the sound effect from a set of 3-5 recorded samples, based on strike distance shouldn't stress the game engine too much... I mean, you already do that with e.g. car/road sounds.
      (As a side note: Furiously wondering how can we have rain falling, when the stars are seen on clear, completely cloudless night sky... 1:24)
      But enthralled to see the views of Pyynikki, Hämeensilta, Tammerkoski when discussing ambient sound. Love it.

    I only have one thing to say about Cities Skylines, and that is that everything is fantastic, my only minor complaint is that the skyscrapers and buildings don't have a variety of indoor lights they all seem to be a unified warm yellow colour, whereas most buildings and skyscraper have a variety of indoor lights that usually lean more towards incandescent white. Game sounds great btw

    • @professorcoms2481
      @professorcoms2481 9 месяцев назад +12

      I've noticed that too yeah. I think especially during the daytime that yellow pushes out quite a lot. Nighttime definitely suites it better, but I think if they diffuse it a bit more natural it'll be cleaner

    • @ashwitshetty5003
      @ashwitshetty5003 9 месяцев назад +5

      @samuelanimaddo7611 9 месяцев назад

      I see, didn't know Europe still used a lot of the more yellow lights. Makes sense but yeah a setting to diffuse the lights would be nice. And I don't mind the yellow at all, I just think especially for skyscraper there should be a balance between the yellow and the white, it will go a long way to add a vibrancy to the skyline I think.

    • @MarterElectronics
      @MarterElectronics 9 месяцев назад +3

      Europe uses more warm lights because it is cozy and we are used to it.
      When you see windows with white incandescent white, it feels very cold and not attractive.
      I'm not sure where white is actually used?

    • @samuelanimaddo7611
      @samuelanimaddo7611 9 месяцев назад +1

      Every where in the world including Europe has a balance a white and yellow lights in office structures and highrises. Sure, homes are supposed to be more geared towards warm colors but not always downtown and cityscapes. Also this game is in Europe\North America. I am not saying replace all yellow lights, just balance them out so it looks more realistic is all. It's just a minor change that could go a long way.

    This Dev Insight especially is a wonderful example of what happens when you put someone who is incredibly passionate about way they do in charge of their niche. The sounds in this game are beautifully immersive and are rendered into focus in a way that does not trigger my neuro diversity, only appease it. I often played the original game on mute or very low volume; Cities: Skylines II will be the opposite.

    I'm glad there's such a focus on sound...and hopefully on minimizing annoying/repetitive sounds. That can make or break a game experience. Honestly, a lot of times I played C:S 1 on mute (or with music over top of the game sounds) because of the annoying sounds overpowering the experience.

    I can't speak for anyone else, and I know sound can be a criminally underrated aspect of games and movies, but I hope she knows I'm listening with all my heart and my best headphones and soundbars.
    I really get the nearly indescribable way of feeling like "ah, yes, this is finally the perfect sound" and then hoping your vision for that perfect sound is something others notice even if it's through their own interpretation and through their own set of speakers. It's a beautiful way of connecting people together no matter what they may be listening to the sound through.

    what i love about what they've shown so far in terms of sound is no.1: the layering of so many more sounds which meld together and no.2: how it's not so overwhelming as it was in CS1. Often times I'd turn off the audio in CS1 because of those beepings in commercial areas and the annoying sirens which you could hear across the city. Now, the soundscape is much more dynamic, bearable, layered and realistic and it truly feels like a real city, not just a cacophony of multiple sounds fighting each other for attention.
    The highlight for me are the weather effects. The rain, the thunder, the frosty winds sounds EXACTLY as they should and provide a mood so perfect i might keep the music off just so i can hear them.

And just how a movie score can make or break a movie - think Star Wars, E.T. Indiana Jones, Superman the Movie (1978) - it can also make or break a game. And from what I've seen here, the sounds of the game, IMHO, will be instrumental to the overall gameplay. I cannot wait until October 23 when the game is released. Thanks so much for the inspiration!
    Recently been working on sound design for a passion project, the opensource OpenRCT2. It's so cool to replace the sounds and hear em in game and come to life! I have lots to learn so vids like these really help!
    One thing I learned while travelling and recording at different places is something about the sound of thunder.
    I think from what I see here that might be able to use some extra work.
    I love the effect of latency on sound, but they all sound like thunder hits when there's so many more sounds you could include. Sometimes rather than full on hits you get lightning high in the clouds which will sound more rumbly, or sometimes it will roll more rolling thunder is a bit longer and deeper.
    Distance also matters, the further away the hit the less highend the sound will have as those waves can only reach so far. It's awesome to figure these things out

  • @jeffreyhamlin2971
    @jeffreyhamlin2971 9 месяцев назад +1

    Will be interesting to see if the delay takes in the fact of how far away the lightning is from the camera. Also the volume level of the thunder after. A very close lightning strike sounds different then one at a distance. If you ever been close to a lightning strike it is very load and shakes everything with a loud boom. Plus the effect of lightning echoing off of mountains can add that rolling thunder sound. Will be fun to ;hear how it all works.

    It's really awesome to see a group of people who genuinely have so much passion and enjoyment doing what they do. It makes us want to buy and engage with the game all the more since we know the development of it came from a good place!

    Great diary. The passion and attention to detail here caught me off guard. Something even emotional about this. Great to see so much passion and effort behind this game. Didn’t expect to be looking forward to playing this game with headphones, but now I can’t wait. Thank you, Ms Syrén.

    I only wish CO will add raytracing some day as a feature because it always give a better sense of scale.

    Sound design makes or breaks art. I'm glad the people working on it care so much. Small QOL items like this really make a game immersive

    I love the fact that sound which is important got such love and attention to detail. This is what happens when someone who truly loves what they're creating is involved. Not only does CO show love for the game but also the player base. We could've just had some generic sound design but aren't we fortunate to have her as the sound designer? Big thumbs up again! 👍

    "It's just some code! Why do games cost that much?" THIS IS WHY! There's so much work going into a game and CO's marketing has been able to make everybody hyped about this game.
