  • This customer asked us to install lights in his loft after scratching his hair at why his DIY attempt didn’t work. This is surprisingly a very common call out we get too !
Here’s a link to the quickwire splitter, something I think is unbeatable for what it does. (And no, it’s not a paid promotion, I just love them)

Refreshing to hear your views on people doing DIY, there are so many RUclips sparks out there who'll dump on people for doing even the most simple jobs themselves or label any bad work as "DIY" even if they have no evidence that it is. Obviously a lot of people probably shouldn't be touching things themselves but there are also DIYers out there who (as someone else said) know their limits and ensure they have sufficient knowledge before they do work themselves. Personally I'm a DIYer and while I won't go undertaking super complicated work, I'll happily do simple jobs myself having spent an unhealthy amount of time reading up on the relevant regulations before starting. I even picked up a second hand MFT just so I can do basic tests to reassure myself that everything is as it should be. For me it's not about saving money, it's because I genuinely find it enjoyable and interesting work.

I know exactly what you mean, because I too like to have a go at anything in my own house too, and like you, it’s not to save money, it’s to learn. In fact most of the time I’ll spend more money buying the right tools to do it myself than I would paying a professional to do it for me.
and I’ve seen plenty of work done by professional electricians that was disgraceful, and also plenty of DIY that was pretty bloody good.
Of course I’ve seen really bad DIY too, it’s clearly not for everybody don’t get me wrong. but I’d say the worst electrical work I’ve seen has been done by registered electricians…. Just look for my pub video 👀😂

I totally agree. I'm not a sparky by profession (far from it actually) but goodness me, I just sometimes love doing things with my own two hands and having it all work for me. I'd be lying if I said I didn't like saving money for carrying out the most basic of tasks, but it does help. Not only that, the learning aspect gives me a sense of having achieved something.
Previously, I'd always ask my dad (retired builder) to help me do the basic of things around the house, but unfortunately something always got in the way of his schedule, so I learnt to do things on my own, including: wiring lights in my loft, fully CAT6-ing my entire house on my own to spec, and installing smart switches throughout the house. My next task is wiring a Google NEST Protect alarm in my garage correctly. I'm also fully aware of my limits as well, and anything larger, I'd definitely call the professionals in.

Love the Quickwire stuff too but think they need to do a switch and load for a 3 core in the switch side (L, SL, N &E) so you can take the neutral to the switch for smart switches.

Very true when you say people should have a go with a bit of DIY professional help isn’t cheap but it’s around the corner... if your going to work on a circuit or do some DIY isolation is key 🔐 same as if your about to add a outdoor water pipe isolate the water first isolation is a must in everything your about to do and it doesn’t hurt to give something a go and if it goes right well done if not call the masters in and they’ll tell you you shouldn’t be messing with things like this hit it on the chin and ask them where you went wrong 😂

As a handyman I think people touching electrics doing DIY need to have had experience with rewires, board changes, lights, sockets and testing. I've done all the with my father an NICEIC electrical contractor, which gives me the knowledge and experience. Having a go without this experience would make me nervous, and I've seen some really poor and dangerous attempts! Lucky enough this was only a small job. 👌👍

As always Sean and Ryan great job those quick connectors look good need a version to use for smart switches. One thing I really hate is cables not clipped in lofts, and attics it just so much nicer when it’s done , and avoids damages to cables. In USA we can have them going on top of joists (and not just the side of joists) if they do we have to have furring strips. Basically furring strips are pieces of softer wood nailed and screwed to the top of the joist creating a rise on the joist with the cable neatly clipped in between them reducing potential for mechanical damage from walking on them.

Absolutely ok for DIYers with common sense to have a go at this... Knowing your limitations is important and it's clear that your client did.
Part P allows extensions to existing circuits as a DIY thing still (non notifiable) but the person does need to be competent. The only other issue is that insurers often have rules that go beyond the legal requirements.

Lighting is tempting as a DIYer since changing light bulbs is a regular thing and leads to temptation to go further... however the pitfalls are there... ceiling rose and multiple way wiring isn't obvious... and the fact you can trip the RCD even when the MCB is off is confusing.

@@Cablesmith 🤣🤣 lol same here or they find a spur and switch off then when that circuit doesn't work they call us, yes it's a simple fix but how do you charge for walking into a house and turning a switch back on. Also it wasn't them that touched it... but they live alone... must be there local ghost playing tricks on them 🤷‍♂️🤦‍♂️. The most annoying is when they've done work on the house, worked on the electrics mess it up then ring up saying it's randomly stopped working which can waste hours looking for a fault that they know about but don't wanna say anything but then don't like the price put in that would have been less if so much time want wasted looking for it. Honisty is the best policy but hay its good fun investigating and doing detective work on what really happened, the big challenge comes to get that across to the costumer politely as to not offend them. Fun and games 😁. When it comes to DIY I say it depends on the job , adding a spur socket by turning off the mains for a few minutes , or changing a light fixture basic things I find is okay. When it comes to removing the cover for the consumer unit it should be left to the pros showers should not be a DIY job . Should mcbs sales be restricted to the trade to stop consumer unit tamerping . Cheers max 👍
