I think it's Bengal where still the band culture is growing and it is growing better and larger than the playback culture here. Bands Like Fossils, Prithibi, Fakira, The Folk Diaries, Cactus and many more are still growing strong. If you feel it questionable then please visit a Fossils or Prithibi or Fakira concert... you will absolutely feel the craze here for rock and fusion musics. And also independent artists are also growing here by the grace of social music platforms. Yes the aftermath of the "playback" culture is still haunting us but not just now but in old times so much Bengali artists had released single albums and those songs still are in hearts of people.

I agree with the fact that both Arijit and darshan are talented singers but does that mean that they should have monopoly over the whole industry. Every Bollywood album nowadays has at least 2 to 3 songs which are sung by Arijit because he is the most trending Indian artist nowadays and attracts audiences by his name in the title of the song. I think Bollywood is just over-exploiting him especially Pritam by making him sing in almost every other song. They don't care if his voice even suits that particular song or not. Hence deserving remains unexplored.

In the 2000s we had Sonu, KK, Shaan, Mohit, Javed,Adnan, Benny, Papon and occasionally Udit and Kumar Sanu which used to get songs on the basis of whose voice will fit perfectly on a particular song. We used to get a variety of voices in hit songs. Nowadays mostly hit songs are sung by one singer only and it's good for Arijit but not for true lovers of music. Same copy paste formula with the same reggaeton beat.

In Bangladesh Band music is highly popular. Our filmy music industry is way behind our indie pop. In 90s singers like James, Ayub Bacchu, Partha, Khalid and many more scratches our memory with their creations. Jemes sang in Bollywood also (Bhigi bhigi). When we first got the glimps of satellite TV and MTV in 90s, we listened Indian Indie pop artists and they was as close to our heart as our band musicians. Now if i listen India music I still listen to new indie bands, like Kaisi from Asam, Taikudum bridge from Tamilnaru, Ganesh Talkies from West Bengal. Regional indie pop musicians are still creating creative and vibrant songs. You should make a video on them.

I am so glad to see someone making a video on this topic, so many artists from that time are still creating music but they don't have big labels to promote their videos like they promote those trashy songs on youtube. Had a chance to shoot a video with euphoria recently, and the insights Palash Sen gave about the way "a certain big label" has a monopoly on the Indian music scene. They just don't let independent artist rise and reach wider audience, because that big label decide what kind of music will work at a certain time, according to the roster of musicians they have, and this is constantly killing the whole indie industry, or whatever is left of it.

Well said, I believe it was re targeting of those Indie Artists by Bollywood. They got the Indie Artists to feature in music that would take away the music fanatics as Audiences and replace them with people who Obsess over trendy music, only to replace it with something different very quickly. So naturally the fan buildup stopped for Indie Artists there and then but music fanatics like You and myself are still Indie fans till date.

The thing is our independence artists never got the chance to rise, rise seperately from Bollywood.
If any artist gets even a little bit of famous, Bollywood immediately captures them and then suck all the money out of them as much as possible. I stopped listening to Hindi music around 2016 because at that time I realised that the only songs I will be hearing are love, breakup or sad songs. Anything extra, that doesn't exist in Indian music. For a long time, I used to believe music is only made for movies.
Also, majority of Hindi songs are made for Bollywood or somehow are related to it. We are so used to them that we don't even care about any independent artist.
Also, we know Arijit Singh, Jubin Nautiyal and other famous singers mostly because of Bollywood, who are now just trapped in their genre. They just won't make any different music.
And If we really want to push Indian independent music on a global level, we have to make songs in English. Hindi is the 3rd most spoken language but concentrated in India. So to capture first hand audience, we have to produce English songs, and then slowly we can roll out Hindi songs as well.
Because world has a concept in its mind that if it's an Hindi/Indian songs, it's of a movie, and if it's a movie song, its just a party song where everyone is dancing without any soul or context.
That's the reality. Face it and change it to grow from it.

Thank you, Vedant. 90s pop/rock bands/artists ka bahut accha samay tha. Lucky Ali ka sifar album ekdum mainstream music/lyrics se opposite tha. But as you said baad mein he was swallowed by Bollywood in early 2000s (kaho na pyar hai). Ek artist apko mention karna chahiye tha, Falguni Pathak. She is one indie artist jisne Bollywood se khud ko alag rakha. By the way, Bilal Maqsood of Strings (Pakistan) se pucha Gaya tha ki India k pop/rock bands aur Pakistan k bands (Junoon, Strings, Jal, Fuzon, etc.) mein Kya difference hai? Bilal ne kaha India mein film music is the major driving force which eventually is more dominating in market than indie music. Whereas Pakistan bands became more global or at least very popular in Asian market due to their separate culture with film industry. Eventually it's all about funding. Bollywood is a whale which can swallow up all the small fishes. Problem is, 90s indie pop was refreshing and creative. Most of post 90s bollywood music is purely crap, except for few artists and some songs.

It's like when u were saying how it happened, I felt I saw the whole.thing happen. I still listen to songs from that era. They were sooo good. I hate the Bollywood songs now. Sleezy lyrics and unmemorable music, disgusting videos! Can't remember a single song. The decline of bollywood songs is heartbreaking. And the constant remakes of songs is annoying, destroying the memory of the original songs... it's so sad. I miss that era of such amazing albums! Loved every kind of music in that era. 😢
