This is possibly the best ever version of Clair de Lune I have ever heard - and I have heard a lot. This is utter perfection: the pace, the softness yet firm as well... Thank you!
I think so too!!! This is very very close to perfection...right speed, right intention, right dynamics, right feeling, right interpretation, right approach, right sensibility. Stunning, amazing!!! Greetings from an Italian oboist :D
I think I was 22yo when I first heard this song, would’ve been sometime in 1989. (I’m 56 now) My roommate had a CD of various piano artist and I played it on a whim on our CD player, a new technology at the time. Very clean and noiseless. I remember becoming so emotional while listening to it and on about the third or fourth replay I began to cry, it was so longing and beautiful. As a young man I felt silly crying over a song, so I changed the CD to something else, probably rock. It wasn’t the last time I’ve been moved to tears by a song, but definitely the first. I love remembering that experience. So, yeah, if Debussy had only ever composed one song, ever… Thank you, Mr. Debussy.
My Dad has always said that it takes a good player to learn this song, but someone with sheer musical talent to play it with the expression that was intended. And you certainly have captured that expression. Absolutely beautiful!
It is not a song. That is a term developed by iTunes that represents any selection of recorded music. It is a movement of a suite. It is a piece of music. Debussy wrote songs. This is not a song
You don't know what those books are about. They could suck ass. They could be those novels about gay werewolves and vampires making out. You don't know.
This performance is extraordinary and so is the sound of the piano, the tuning and the microphone choice and microphone placement. Best I've ever heard... Only in my dreams could I play this Debussy masterpiece as well as Marnie Laird. Bravo!
totally agree this performance is just extraordinary and what also really impressed me was the rhythm she could keep through the whole song. Plus the quality of the piano's rec.
I'm a 30 year old lad into house, bassline, d&b and any genre apart from thrash metal, and genuinely I could sit on that carpet behind her piano and happily watch her play these excerpts all day long without thinking about it! To the musican, such a talent and well done 👏
Some of my earliest memories are of my mom playing this piece. Now that her urn sits on her piano at my dad's house, I play this video to remind me of how it felt hearing it in my own home while growing up.
This has been my favourite piece before I knew what a piece was. 9 years old, flipping through the channels, all three of them one day after school and from the beauty that is PBS I heard moonlight for the first time. To say I was a deer in the headlights would diminish the experience. My dear I'm 51 years old and I've heard everyone's "version" of this classic, all I can say is thank you.
One more thing contributes to this spectacular rendition. The Piano. What a magnificent instrument. Can't see the label by my guess is Steinway. Debussy's creation, Marnie's uncommon talent and this beautiful instrument have combined to fulfilled Claude's vision. We are blessed to have shared this.
"music is the silence between notes" 🤔 Listened to a few covers and often times they play too fast. Messing with the tempo of this beautiful piece seems to take away from it's enchantment. You're definitely onto something there.
I have hunted the internet over and over listening to so many versions and this is certainly one of the most beautiful versions that I have found: not only the most well played, but also the best recorded. Most versions are either much too fast, or much too slow, but this is just right and with no noticable background noise at all. The Paul Barton version mentioned by people is indeed very good, but perhaps a little slow. And in this version the lack of any background noise is excellent, and really stands out with the the long natural sustain at the end, which is just lovely. Thank you so very much.
Just caught this tonight and it is absolutely, unequivocally the best with a big B version of Clair De Lune that I’ve ever heard! And I’m 79 years old and have a lot of Clair De Lune’s under my belt! Ultimate perfection; will listen often before sleep now that I’ve found it. Bless you and your gifts.
Se soltanto la gente ascoltasse questa meraviglia una volta ogni tanto, non ci sarebbero piu guerre né ingiustizie, ma solo amore per il prossimo e felicità.
Debussy was a brilliant pianist. Moving from the late romantic style, he worked schorter and approaching the form of musical works, modern music that will influence the aesthetic sensibility of his works. Clair de lunr one of his most famous musical works. This piece of music is wonderfully and movingly perfomed. Thank You, Marnie Laird! 🎶🌹
Everything about this is perfection: Marnie Laird’s performance, the grand piano, the books, and last but not least, arguably the most beautiful piece of music ever written. And the gates of Heaven swung open to welcome you home..
Tears in my eyes... Why is this so beautiful... I will one day play this. Maybe not as good as you are. You are so blessed. Thank you for this cover. Debussy would have been proud. You have superb technique. Every soul touches something within my soul.
Shivan Mavalal I agree with most of the comments except for one. Many may disagree, but I just feel that saying that someone is "blessed" with the ability to do something is slightly insulting. I understand that it is a compliment that comes only with the best intent, but people practice for years and even decades to do things like what you see in this video; I'm sure you're not stupid though, so you probably know that. I suppose saying someone is blessed could be referring to the ambition to practice for great lengths of time for the sake of the talent, and some people are more naturally gifted than others at some things, but talent is generally nothing more than a pursued interest, and chalking that talent down to a blessing which is essentially out of one's control is demeaning to the person and the beautiful work he or she puts into the world. Sorry for the novel, and please don't take this to be a mean comment. I honestly mean this in the most polite way possible. I didn't mean to sound like a dick.
This was a melody on my now 14 yr old son's crib music box....It takes me back to sweet baby naps and the pure joy of being a new dad. I can't listen to it without tearing up. No other version triggers my emotions like Brooklyn Duo...absolutely love it!
「Clair de Lune 」 is the culmination of Debussy's aesthetics . I just am intoxicated with her incomparable performance and this Debussy's aesthetics called 「 Clair de Lune 」 . From chaotic Tokyo of the Land of the Rising Sun .
@@sinner272 Thank-you so much to your heartfelt comments Tokyo is raining and cool and sorrow , lonely and melancholy after Olympics Someday please come to Japan of spring The cherry blossoms in full bloom and immeasurable cherry petals falling like a blizzard of spring wait for you Good luck !
I believe you have truly defined the way this should be played. So many people are heavy-handed with many of the softer passages, yet you are not afraid to barely touch the keys. I loved hearing this selection!
So rich and warm, and such depth in that setting. Makes me imagine a couple from the 'twenties' putting on their ritzy evening clothes, he in top hat and tails, she in small tiara and furs, and they take a romantic Valentine's night tour of the city, go to the grand ballroom party at the hotel by the shore, then step out together onto the lonely veranda to admire the full moonlight and twinkling stars looking at their shimmering reflections in the bay.
Marnie does to a piano what a ballet does to a stage. The way she moves in between transitions made me think that it was slowed down for dramatic effect, but after seeing other videos, I just realized it was all her. Beautiful!
Many thanks. No one could do it better than you. Fascinating. What a beauty! How lucky to play the best instrument in the world so well. This music always makes me think. Absolute beauty.
Thank you for posting this beautifully played piece. We used to visit my wife’s folks and my father-in-law would have fallen asleep in his chair listening to Debussy. Side note; why would 200+ humans click thumbs down on this? Our society is in dire need of a correction.
This is an amazing and beautiful rendition of "Clair de Lune". So much emotion is conveyed through Ms. Marnie Laird's flawless performance. Very moving. I must admit, I feel rather embarrassed with my own rendition of "Clair de Lune" on RUclips which I had recorded over thirty years ago when I was a young man. However, Ms. Laird is truly a gifted artist.
I have heard so many versions from this on youtube and although many have the technique down, they can't bring in the feeling that this piece requires. I love how you gradually build up the sound from 1:11 to 1:50. You just play it so beautiful. And then the fast part which feels like raindrops falling to earth. It sounds like a dream of a far away land, something that has long passed.
This is absolutely beautiful. I have heard this played many many times and have been disappointed to find that far too many play this stunning piece of music too quickly. This is absolutely perfect. The feeling you put into this also, is so apparent. Just lovely. Thank you, you ought be be so very proud of yourself.
You know, every time I hear this, I feel like I hear the piano talking to me. Telling me to go to sleep, to drift into a world of dreams. A world where I can be free to do whatever I want. A world, where anything is possible. A world where only pure love and peace exists. Thank you for so beautifully allowing the piano to express these emotions and let others experience it.
A beautiful rendition indeed. Until I heard this, I thought the Kathia Buniatishvili performance was my favorite, but the clarity of this particular performance lets each note shine as brightly as the "lune" itself. Love this tempo, this feeling.

Miss Laird could feel all the magnificence of this that is, in my standpoint, one of the most representatives of Debussy. It is a clair de lune/moonshine in our hearts
I don't ever comment on videos, but I was just casually listening to piano music while working and I heard this thinking man that sounds familiar. I came to a realization that this song is from The Legend of 1900, my all time favorite movie for sentimental purposes and I just had to make a comment. Thank you for playing this.
Imagine a lake in, say Switzerland, and you're walking along its margin and, over the lake, a gorgeous full moon rising in the sky. Can you see it reflected on the lake's ripples? That's what I think when I listen to this song.
Hi, I don't know if you have seen this...Fantasia Clair de Lune "Deleted Sequence". I thought of this after reading your description. Enjoy, as I have enjoyed the wonderful performance by this young lady! :-)
