Nicks, Whites and Wesco are all EXCELLENT! All do the same thing but I climb poles and use a boot with steel in them. Used Wesco for over 30 years and have had multiple pairs rebuilt, resoled and new. All of these manufactures are GREAT and all do the same thing with EXCELLENT QUALITY. Thank you for exposing the unknowing to these people.

Many thanks for this boot tour @ Nick's. I always thought I knew a lot about the boots we wear in wildland fire and timber management. But this has been a great education. And I am especially glad to learn that they will rebuild my non-Nick's boots. This tour is all the better because they told us what (approximate) costs to expect.

The breakdown really makes it much easier to swallow the higher price earlier on. $100 a year for great boots is well worth it.
I as well always thought rough-out was for aesthetics only. Funny how a small change such as that can prolong the life under hard use. I truly would have thought the opposite.

I love Lincoln's. There was about 5 of us in my unit that used Lincoln's on our boots. We had the best looking boots after a 24 hr shift.

Thanks for sharing this "bonus footage". I'm not sure how to say this but i'll give it a try,,, I was Proud to see all those working boots on the shelf to be repaired. Proud to be alive in a country that has working men and women that take pride in their boots and their work i'm sure. I'm not so sure i got my point across but i tried.
btw, i have started my new boot fund and hope to have enough saved before the duct tape wears through on the boots i wear now.lol.just kiddin. I have a good pair but i've had a few good pairs with a few not so good pairs along the way..I'll be proud to have a pair of nicks boots hopefully before this coming fall.

I got a set of handmade boots last year. Best money I ever spent. I have never in my life felt such good quality in a boot. Have a strong, tough, well built boot that perfectly fits every curve of your feet is like nothing else.
Luckily, I didn't have to pay anywhere near the money being discussed in this video, though.
Awesome video. I've picked up used boots on ebay and had them rebuilt. Most of the time you don't need an exact fit when buying a used boot, they can rebuild it to your size. $50 ebay boot and a $200 rebuild and you literally have a brand new boot for $250.
So now we get to see what is best. Whites vs Adams vs nicks. I surprised you are getting another pair of boots with how much you like your Adams boots.

I'll guarantee that people commenting on the price of these handmade boots have never seen them in person let alone tried them on. I have a $300 pair of Redwing Heritage, also "handmade" and my Whites Smokejumpers are way beyond comparison. All natural materials, no foot or back ache, and no stinky feet. One of the best investments I've ever made. I've read a testimonial that a guy worked his daily for over 30 years.

I work as an arborist i ns canada and i wish i could have a pair of us made boots made from a company like the one shown. What i mean is im not allowed to wear anything other than csa approved boots on commercial property for liability reasons. A little green triangle stamp is what i need on my footwear to work on certain sites. Ill likely make a trip in the near future to come down and buy a pair anyway. Id prefer my money to go to a company like this where quality is number one. Cheers, mike
I believe they make boots that are csa approved. Take a look at Viberg boots. They are Canadian made and are made the same way as Nick's.
I have had a difficult time finding off-the-shelf boots that are comfortable and durable. Last year I bought a pair of Timberland Pro Helix 8" and loved them so much that I immediately ordered a second pair. They were on sale for $63 (now $183) on Amazon. They needed no break-in, were always comfortable, and have taken my abuse. I wear them year-round on the farm. I expect they will easily last another 3 years. That costs me $16 per year.
Whatever happened with the custom boots from MN? Did they not pan out? I remember the first few vids on them but never saw/or I missed any long term follow up? Just curious as a former Minnesoatan.
Ive never owned a pair of boots that cost $600+, but ive owned a pair of Double-H GEL-CELL 10" PACKERS .theve lasted long long time 14 years to be exact and i still wear them daily.
I have a pair of boots that I have had for 10 year's and they are still comfortable and I have hicked up a few monroe's in them
I'm going there tomorrow to get fitted for a new pair of line boots... I'll tell them u sent me Cody... maybe they'll give me a wranglerstar discount! lol
It's odd to think that only 1 year later, this workshop, showroom, some of the staff (including the host) Frank, is now "Franks Boots".

Looks like Cody and Mrs. W had some tough decisions to make. Wouldn't it have been nice to be able to say, "I'll take a pair of each." :)
I'm just not sold! The only custom boots I ever bought were absolutely terrible! Beyond that I will say that I have worked on my feet in a pair of work boots from my very first job as a teen and I have NEVER personally known anyone that has owned a custom pair of $500 boots. I have nothing really against it other than my one bad experience. But I'll also say that having a new pair of boots every so often is something to look forward to for a lot of people. So rebuilding the same boot over and over may not be what some are interested in.

I think 1-1.5 years for a resole is overstating the frequency that you would need to resole. These are vibram soles, not flip-flops.
Yes, this was just to illustrate with really heavy use what the cost would be. For less use the boots will need less work and will last longer, also bringing down the price of the boot year over year to be even less.
So when doing resole or rebuild, do they go off of ur custom specifications?

***** Sachi WI His name is Adam Jimenez... the Boots are called Adams Boots and are sold through his store in Winona. I went to Winona State Univ. and discovered him while I was there... every time I go back and visit (once a year or so) I always stop in or give Adam a buzz. He stopped taking orders a while ago. Didn't really elaborate as to why, other than he has plenty of work to keep him busy for a while. Who knows... he may be lowing his workload to have more free time... he may be starting the process of retiring... who knows... speculation merely. But if you want awesome boots... you aren't getting them from him.
They are all the "best" its like whats better, a Bentley or a rolls royce? They are both the best.

So, let's get your take on wesco's vs adams vs nicks vs all others. I would like to invest in a quality custom fit boot but going by your videos it has made it hard for me to decide. I would enjoy hearing your take on different manufacturers and their products with a bit of a pros/cons list.

Me too. I need a new pair of boots but finding ones that fit in the UK is difficult at best, since I have narrow feet, a high instep, and really big calves.
I bet if you ordered enough Nick's boots they would come to you in the UK!
We do ship worldwide. We just got a fit sheet in from Ireland a few months ago!

Whats the turn around for a rebuild? Also, how long does it take to build a custom boot from mailing the sizing chart out to customer and then mailing finished product??
I believe they are pretty backed up getting ready for the wildland fire season. You can call them and they'll give you a general idea. Usually around 6-8 weeks.
p2o8wer Every customer is different. It really depends if you will need a custom fit and then how many home try ons it takes to get the fit perfect (this is where we mail you boots and have you call in to explain how the boots are fitting and where any hot spots are so we can customize the last to your foot). Kimball Cody is right though, give us a call 800.824.2685 and we can better explain the process and timing.
Can I ask please, last year you had an awesome pair of boots made for you and you did a few videos about them being made, standing on paper to draw the foot shape and all that. So what happened to them and could you not rebuild them if they have died. Be interested to find out as they looked quality.

Remember they cannot rebuild the uppers. At this point a whole new boot is being built. 8 yrs later it is NOT two hundred bucks for a rebuild.
So what's the final verdict, I have seen you in whites Adam's and now nick's what's the final vertict? I'm a big guy so nicks suggested the hotshot even for just regular non fire use but I fear they will be heavy and stiff. Do you agree or what would you do. I have owned custom wescos that died to de-lamination and stitch failure so I want durability but not at the cost of allot of weight or stiffness.
Did they really say they can’t stitch the sole on when on their website it shows two rows of stitching though the bottom of the hotshot

I would've loved to get new Nicks, but wow, it IS a huge initial investment. to back you up, though, I got a no-custom pair of Hawthorns (White's) for half that: and they stretched and now won't fit quite right. I think I'll contact Nicks about a re-sole and rebuild on these, so I can re-size. Hmmmm, another $100 makes me realize I should've saved for the initial cost.

I would love to be their boot durability tester.... been working at different railyards for the past year....I murder boots. I had a pair of Walmart boots last maybe 2 hours before I got down to the steal toe.
+joe smith I hear you. I did walmart boots for a long time. Would go through 2-4 pair a year (depending on work load). Finally decided to buy Red Wing now over 2 years and they just now need new soul and bottom. So while a lot more up front cost i have saved quite a bit over the 2 and half years. All that to say i will not be going back to cheap boots. Work to hard, for to long to wear that crap again.
+MegaWeagle yea my soles don't last long the walking area if you will on train cars are designed to tear your boots up because they grip well...boot soles don't go flat they go into swiss cheese no joke...the toes on my boots are gone. that happens within idk at the most 3months normally 2
I would definitely recommend you saving up and biting the bullet if you will. I personally could not be happier. A well constructed boot should last you a lot longer. As well as some better made brands will also redo the bottoms of your boots for a much smaller price then the original cost. Thus giving you more for your money over the long haul. Something to consider anyway wish you well, stay safe and work hard. :)
I like that you are using Instagram now, BUT I would like to provide a little feedback. I do not enjoy Instagram accounts that "bombard" my instagram feed with too many posts within one day.
My suggestion/feedback is to keep the instagram posts limited and spreadout (if possible) - this is said in a spirit of love and not at all with any negativity. Thanks, keep up your diligent work and I really enjoy the "Wranglerstar Channel/Project"!
I agree. The learning curve for instagram is pretty quick and I'm sure Cody will be mastering # and the 15 sec videos very soon.

Ive herd alot of reasons for the tassel thing on sum boots but whats the real reason that these and many other brands put them on. Is it for fashion or for actuality
My experience with owning custom boots is less rosy. When a boot is resoled, the welt must be trimmed off, resulting in a somewhat smaller space inside the boot for the foot. In my case, my boots were far too tight after one resole. I was looking at the time to having more money into my boots in one year than I had in my car.
***** ,it's awesome that Nick's offers that level of customer service and warranty. It's almost unheard of these days. If I'm in the position again where I need that much boot for my feet, knees, or back, I will see Nick's, and insist that my boots have the space my feet need. Seeing their process for customizing a last, I see no need to suffer in an ill-fitting boot. Nor do I see a need to lean on their exceptional customer service to correct an issue that could be easily avoided with a little foresight.
Trimming the welt doesn't change the inside dimensions. They might have used a different last, but if it was a simple resole all that is changed is the rubber.
Well, my boots were barely big enough to begin with, and they got considerably worse after resole. They told me at the time that stitching the rubber required trimming something so the thread would hold.
Darryl Machtmes It sounds like the rebuild didn't go right. Do you mind sharing where you had this done? The inside of the boot doesn't change when we do a resole. The inside should never change. We will use this analogy occasionally... If you take the tire off of a rim and put a new tire on the rim the rim size doesn't change.
