Tip for traditional arts like myself, USE STICKY NOTES! they’re like a real life pick and drag tool, you draw the hand and if you don’t like it, RIP THAT SUCKA OFF AND DRAW ANOTHER :D
Good tip, but I want to add: *shoulders are also really important for making expressive poses!* They're a literal extension of the arms, so any arm position should take shoulder position into account. Basically don't draw the shoulders flat and then figure out the pose from there-- they should be part of your plan just as much as hands and arms are.
Just draw the hands on another piece of paper, cut them out and experiment by moving them around the top of your art if that makes sense. Hope this helps!
@@ItsAnanna but hey it works so yeah and besides, if you put more work in your art it'll look better and it's less work than just drawing the hands in 6 different positions and erasing it again
This would help me tremendously if I could actually draw hands, years of trying but I still suck so much at them, even with countless references 😭 I love the drawing you made!
I recommend using your own hands as a reference or trying rotoscope, then referencing that and building it up to muscle memory :D Edit: I say this as if I can draw well but it’s been working for me lol
To be fair, circles for joints aren’t too bad. I think the biggest issue is with elbows where that can make poses incredibly stiff. I’d say definitely focus on hands and shoulders as both can set emotion and all that, and put the rest of the arms in later
With traditional art, try lightly sketching the hands in different places with pencil! Even just some squares at different angles. And if you like all of them, you've got a badass multi-armed deity
@@hvbg I watched that video 3 time haha.... HAHHAH .... Still couldn't figure out how to draw hands, but I'm a wayyy closer than before. LavenderTowne really helps us a lot
So basically everyone is Rayman until you draw the limbs🥴 Nah but seriously this is a really good tip, I've actually used this before but for legs and feet. I draw the shoes first and then I draw legs. Very helpful
It still helps to draw the hand first. When I realized that a few months ago, my poses got instantly more dynamic. You can also draw just two circles to test the hand positions and move them by erasing and redrawing.
Art tip for traditional artists: for me, since I lack the ability or resources to draw digitally, sketching out rough ovals for the arms is a better way of getting more fluid movement and getting an idea for the width you want the arm to be, rather than building around a line which can make the arm look strange or stiff. edit: please know that this is what personally works for me, it might not be for everyone and that's ok! I've just found that it helps doing rounder shapes rather than straight lines
Nah, DON’T YOU EVER USE OVALS Use more triangular shapes since the human body has more tapers and ovals show indecision That’s what my boy Ethan taught me and it’s true
@@YouKnowImOnMyPeriodYah lemme tell ya that there are multiple ways to do *rough sketches* and ovals works better for someone, and even thought this yours mighty boy Ethan might be a professional artist, noone gives a fuck, it's just a sketch, dude, someone prefers to use ovals over lines.
"And then you can use the transform tool-" Me, a traditional artist: "Guess I'll die" (Edit: Y'all its been a YEAR thanks for still replying and stuff ig? (Edit 2: y'all really be there for me you guys are real ones
You can draw in different positions during the sketch phase, don't worry! I applied this tip on the traditional way (I'm a traditional and digital artist) and it worked!!
Another tip is: instead of drawing lines for the limbs, draw tapered rounded triangles/wedges. I even sometimes make the forearm curve "weird" and then eventually if despite limb placement and hands, it still looks weird, I just tone down the curvature. Doing this also helps perceiving the arm as a 3D object instead of a flat one and helps with things like foreshortening.
What I often do is draw the line first, then add lines on either side of that first line as guides for how thin or thick I want the arms to be - and then flesh the outer lines out a bit (does that make sense? I hope so).
Feet are a lot less movable then hands, considering you're actually relying on them to stay up. If you're doing a floating/falling pose then yeah, that might work, but you need to keep in mind a whole bunch of things; Which leg are they putting their weight on, how relaxed are they, etc
“What’s helped me is drawing the hands first” The people with no ability to draw hands: 👁👄👁 Edit: holy crap. That’s the most likes I’ve ever gotten. Thanks everyone!
Well what you can do instead of throwing hands and start what you normally do like let's say you don't know how to draw hands draw a little circles or let's say you don't know how to draw circles for whatever reason you can draw like little squares you can draw just you know the three lines kind of like adventure Time it don't have to be as good as they can but you have to at least make it seem like this circle or it's just a square or it's just enough without even any fingers or you can go for adventure time, she also has video on that too
In my experience, simply sketching little circles where the hands are supposed to be is sufficient. You still need to draw the actual hands later, but the point at this early stage of drawing is to figure out the placement of the hands and arms. Drawing details AND figuring out the pose at the same exact time is a bad idea in general, just make it easy on yourself by not doing the details until the end.
You have no idea how helpful your tutorials are to me, Ahhhh your style is literally the cutest thing ever! You're definitely one of my top three favorite artists
Oooooh.. this is good. I thought it was just about stiffness but the way that you think about it in your brain is helping you actually plan out and explore different possibilities and emotional effects. I love it
Learned this a while back on tumblr and it made my poses look a lot better Also for those who have trouble figuring out how long to make the arm - remember that the elbow always comes to the person's waistline! That's the rule I typically follow to make sure my arms aren't too long or short
This is really good, also for making hands look like they’re connected to normal arms, - shoulder orb - hands - connect hand to corresponding shoulder orb with one straight line - find the middle of that line, draw a line out perpendicular to it, use the end of this third line to mark where you’re putting your elbow orb - I learned this from somewhere else ages ago but it’s really useful
The fact that I was literally JUST struggling to draw a character. Thank you! This is so helpful, I would have never thought about drawing the hands first!
