What I've noticed is that OCs often have a backstory that is a heavily exaggerated interpretation on the emotions that you have when you think about your present self's current state. OCs are also almost always designed around the traits that you idealize in a person.

I make self-inserts for every fandom I join. They usually end up being shorter, edgier, and more punk rock than me (I'm 5'2"). You hit the nail on the head with that one for sure.
All of my oc’s are unique and I always give them some peace in their story! Even my most traumatic one ends up having a good end, and I enjoy making little comics of my characters just messing around, and I also include myself as my oc that represents me. I feel like I really have a special connection with all of my characters, and I try to give them diversity and happiness. (God I’m making this seem like they’re real- but that’s just how much I love my oc’s) This video was fun to watch, and I hope you all have a good time! Everyone’s oc’s are awesome and unique, so never feel left out, you are wonderful as well.

While most of my OCs fit into the fantasy category, a small handful of them actually came from self-inserts!
One of my all-time favorite OCs is my first ever D&D character, Clio. She was an eladrin elf who, originally, I had made to look like and act like me, but I very quickly realized that she wasn't going to last long going down that route, so I scrapped the idea. I changed her entire design, tweaked the personality some, and gave her the tragic backstory™️ she needed. She went through a lot over the course of her campaign, changing even more from her original design, but I couldn't be happier ^^
Just for funsies, she went from being a kind and careful pushover devoted to her God to an unfiltered body of chaos who would spit in the face of her enemies if she had the chance. Too bad she was stuck on the back lines debating whether or not she should heal her party members 🤷🏼♀️
I really wish I were creative enough to make real OCs like this.
I get this mental block for trying to think of names and personalities that I just can’t get over. I draw things (badly), but I can’t even start on an actual character for what I draw.

fun fact: “punching-bag ocs” are sometimes created as a means of catharsis, and having a character that is constantly put in danger or harm can be a healthy coping mechanism for someone who has gone or is going through something traumatic.
Can confirm, been there and now my ocs are safe and I can't help but write cute scenes for them :D

My main/favorite OC Lily is just a sarcastic ball of social anxiety trying to cope with feeling of not being good enough and abandonment issues who's story line consists of falling in love with the girl that moves in with her, who then basically drags Lily out so she can make friends
It's a very fun story to write

I just made my main oc based off my fav things, somehow i made some weird aesthetic and backstory on the way of completing the oc. I change it so often that I made a big part of the story the backstory around her changing forms a lot. I haven't made a complete backstory yet but I've made the biggest details in it, and I think I'm happy with how it is rn! Also love your vids!!! :D

my specific character named spin [as seen in pfp] is a cartoon punching bag, its like, he can basically go through things that can actually kill real life people, but be okay because hes basically a rubberhose cartoon, yeah, sometimes he can feel pain for the comedy, but other times its like "oh my hand got cut off, eh, whatever, it'll grow back.", its not supposed to be 'powerful' much, cause all my characters can basically do that, its the power of cartooniness and rubberhose, but its so funny to me, i dunno why. [short ver. funny character i made cartoony punching bag haha its funny.]

Haha, my OCs are definitely the D&D type - especially since most of my OCs are "whatever I'm playing in a tabletop RPG now". I do have a tendency to make up reams of setting info and backstory for each character no matter what medium they're from though. For example, my current one is the heroine of what I would like to one day turn into a graphic novel - a gamer girl called Neko who gets transported to a fantasy world (which pulls a lot of inspiration from outside of the traditional Medieval European setting tropes and mostly derives from a mix of Indian, Persian, and Native American cultures) where she ends up piloting a giant magical robot. The setting is turning out pretty in-depth, as is Neko's backstory, and I have an outline for a complex and emotional character-driven plot. Funny enough... Neko had a "self-insert OC" for herself in her backstory!
The "super tragic backstory" is usually something like: "He's a half demon half angel robot-fox with a .exe version that keeps telling him to kill his gf for love. He's also super psycho 'cause his parents died before he was born :"("

I draw stuff sometimes and I don't have an oc to express or refer to myself, but I doodled a fox one time and it looked good so I remade that digitally and used it to express myself. I got bored and then drew ✨an actual anthropic character✨ to use instead so I guess it counts as my fursona now. They're kind of edgy with like a side-mohawk thing and always wear a hoodie and have their hands in the pockets. I still like them tho.
Also I come up with the most mind-blowing beautiful animations when I listen to music and remember I have no idea to animate, so I'm trying to learn. So far I know how to animate a sphere rotating in very choppy movements and pretend it's a head.
I have a lot of "punching bag oc's", like, you can see a character that has revived more Times than has taken breakfast, most of them from suicide, another one who had an abusive father that once pushed down her pregnant mother and the oc beated the shit out of him, another with memory loss who has instant flashbacks and feels so out of place and struggles knowing who she is, but their creator is just me, a random who screams and dances from happiness when gets to buy and eat nuggets

I just use them as a mental health evaluation character and have an entire sketchbook dedicated to them- if I am emotionally hurt they will be physically but I do draw them when I am happy and they will have no new injuries (:
Obviously i draw them with healing injuries and permanent scars if I go through trauma- but I highly recommend doing this

I have oc’s but I dont have them drawn because I’m insecure about what I’m drawing and I suck at it, BUT I have a whole ass timeline of their world in my head and sometimes I catch glimpses of it when I’m dreaming or hearing music or zoning out.
The human mind is just crazy

I suggest to learn drawing to create the world

That’s what keeps me from going insane
For a good amount of time I have had these cool but dark characters that I could clearly imagine in my head having a big story but it upsets me when I can’t draw them I want to write them but I’m not exactly the best
And basically some of them are main characters atleast in my mind they are but way darker they aren’t even the good guys
But just remember if you do write them down or draw them
It doesn’t matter what anyone else says as long as you enjoy doing it thats all that matters
I was so scared of drawing my characters because of how dark and horror built they were I use to think if anyone saw or knew I thought like this they would think I need intense therapy then I figured out they don’t even know what they are looking at
Like the other artists in family see it clear as day but then I go to the ones that don’t draw and they say the weirdest things that come to mind

I have an OC i made a while ago, Started off very Mary sue until i got around 20, where i mellowed them out and split their upsides into multiple characters, ive started to find characters are more interesting once they have weakness and have been more humanized, fun to play around with in roleplays, the people i roleplay with have recently said ive recently become a more fun partner

im...odd honestly- when i make oc's they are often different sides of myself that i let shine yet when it comes to already existing, angsty characters im one of those people who latch onto them and take my personal struggles and kind of..project them through the character?? its kind of like the punching bag and self insert thing combined with the canon version of how they are supposed to be :'D the same goes with how they act when it comes to partners, family and friendly relationships they will act similar to how i do until i realize this is their own person and pull back from adding my own stuff :>
overall? very spot on like- im lowkey scared and i kinda like how its seen as normal if not good
Among all of my OCs I can see all of these character types represented in varying capacities and name specific characters they would fit.

My oc is my version of how I see myself. So basically: colorless, boring, analytical, perfectionistic, a bit exaggerated on the hair, and socially awkward. Definetely not an ideal version of myself, but rather the version I see myself as.

Use to make self inserts oc's but i decided to make more fun oc's most of my oc's still carry my personality
For me, digital speedpaint is just the artist doing magic and making art, its really intriguing...
