When we did meditation in my yoga class, my instructor told us to ground ourselves and pretend we were trees. After 2 sessions, I told her I can't function as a tree, can I be a jellyfish instead because in my observations of them they can "be still" even in a current. She looked at me like I was insane but then said if that's what works go for it.

I have just passed a one year mark of daily meditation. Tried many styles, lenghts, guided, not guided... It's been a struggle more often than not. Two things that helped me tremendously:
    1. I do it daily, no matter what - but it can be as little as 5 minutes.
    2. Someone said that the first year, or even two you're going to be shit at meditating. I am here for the long haul, so I just accepted that.
So I simply show up, every day. I think that's the most important thing.

I felt this one in my soul. I actively practiced Taekwondo for 10 years, and while the forms part of it never did much in the way of making me a better "fighter," I did find that it became a moving meditation after a while. I get a similar meditative effect today when I get a chance to walk alone in the woods, but those opportunities are too few. This makes me think it's time to pick an app, grab a journal, and start ... something. Anything. Thanks for the inspiration!

I've always loved writing stuff down for myself, but never journaled in my life. Have given it a shot, tried it for a month end of last year, put it aside again for some weeks/months, and now been sticking to it the past two months again.
Also, at first did just very simple things (track basic habits), and only slowly started to add more to my journaling. By now I have a daily written entry, plus bigger entries every (other) week.
So from a fellow stranger I can give a big recommendation to journaling.
Don't overdue it, more important to have it be a regular thing. As I said, I only added stuff step by step, kept it very light and simple to start off with. And even had a break in between (different reasons)
      ruclips.net/video/rfeADdY1rHw/видео.html
I watched a few different videos on other peoples journaling habits, and the one I linked above resonated most with me. Just to get an idea, I didn't start off doing everything he does.
What I really like about analog pen & paper btw. is that you can change things week by week, month by month. With time you'll figure out what you like and what doesn't suit you.
Anyways, bit rambling now, maybe I should start to think about going to bed slowly XD

Thanks for making this video, I really felt it. I was a serious rock climber for a number of years and was totally in love with the sport, it was extremely meditative for me and I had goals to do multi-day big wall ascents. Then I trashed my ankle and foot in a bad fall and it took over a year to re-learn how to walk without pain. I still climb but I just don't love it anymore, and I'm searching for that "something" to replace it that keeps me in the present... I recently started doing traditional archery and I think that might be it. Cheers, I'm glad that you've found that something :)

Recent subscriber here - so glad I found your channel. I am going back through some of your older videos and this one caught my attention. I have a, I don’t want to say love-hate, maybe “complicated” relationship with meditation, also. Like you, I tend to fidget, also. If you have not done set yet, I highly recommend “mindful walking”. For me, it incorporates the peace and calm I can achieve through seated meditation, while also allowing me to enhance my mind-body connection. It also helps me appreciate and truly be grateful for my bodies ability to move as it does. Something that I took for granted before. Anyway, you may never see this but I wanted to put this out into the Universe for anyone who has struggled with meditation. As you discovered, it is called “meditation practice” for a reason...it takes practice! Best wishes, S.

This is everything! I had an injury in my hips years ago, slowly it took away my ability to work out on the daily (even thought I can walk normally) I deal with daily pain and 5 years in I have no diagnosis. Being active, specially thru tennis, was one of my most favorite activities and I loved the mental aspect as well. It's been hard to deal with the pain, but I think it's been harder to deal with the lack of physical activity, and all the rewards that it brought for me. Recently Ive been getting into meditation and it's been quite amazing, I still miss working out but just as you have experienced, the mindfulness and inner peace aspect has slowly returned. I highly recommend head space's mini series on Netflix!

Your comment gave me a little hope! I suffer from hypermobility which most doctors wuldn't even consider an illness but for me it's giving me lots of injuries so I had to stop one hobby after the other and can't pick up any new activity that is too hard on my joints (which applies to pretty much everything I enjoy). I basically have no outlet left to deal with my thoughts and get creative so I am just there flooded with everything on my mind. I really want to get into a consistent meditation routine now.

    Hi there!
The (guided) meditation-apps are a great way to start meditating and implementing it as a habit.
But I would encourage everyone to try to meditate without it (at least try it for some weeks).
Otherwise you depend on the app / the phone for your meditation and this may be a con.
And if you really want to confront the discomfort, consider a 10 day Vipassana course.
You learn a technique that is only dependant on you and you have plenty of time to train it. And its free!

For myself it works when i think of it as correcting a mechanical issue with my brain. In my past my mind always found a way to distract me from my surroundings and that led to my maladaptive daydreaming condition. Meditation helps me be more focused when doing a task or working on a project. I definitely see this as a spiritual journey, because it helps with the changes i'm experiencing but on a scientific perspective there is nothing more to it than training the mind to work for the soul, not the other way around. I found myself it helps while making a decision or i start questioning why do i feel this way and why now. Usually emotions charged ahead during a situation but now i feel the shift between thought and mindfulness is taking place. And yes you were right, i hated it until sitting still became my favorite part of the day!
Good luck to you L and stay present!

Most people are confused when I tell them that times spent wresting around for a submission is the most peaceful time of my week. If you listen to the Buddhist Monk Gelong Thubten on meditation (he went to extremes of years of silence), he says it's ok that your mind wanders. I like very visual and creative style meditation with angels, glittery, rainbows etc so Diana Cooper for 10-15 minutes hits the spot at the moment, it does make a difference.

@@lunaumbra5179 Tara Brach did talks on pain. You can see them here on RUclips. Kristin Neff also did a lot of stuff an self compassion and pain.
I participate an online mindfulness group twice a week. It‘s not particularly about pain but we meditate together and you can ask questions about mindfulness and meditation. It‘s a really nice community. If you‘d like to join, I can give you the contact.

Meditation was a thing I had only dabbled in before lockdown, but I really went hard into it mid last year and it was so important to process through what was happening out in the world but also inside of me.
Sadly I moved post lockdown (Aussie here) and lost the habit of it, but this has been a good push to get back into it -I just did 15 minutes after the video

I meditate for about 40 minutes a day but it's really easy because I found the Heartfulness (or Sahaj Marg) group.
A trainer supports the first 3 sittings and from then on it's amazingly effortless. 😄

I hate it as well, I always get back pain and if I lay down I fall asleep, I always feel a weight on my chest whenever I inhale and it happened a few times that I got nauseous.I don't know if these things are normal for a beginner or not, but I wish I could love it lol because I know it would help me.I am open to any tips & tricks on how to hate it less and how to not feel like I have an appointment at the dentist whenever I go into lotus position.

I don't do any meditation myself, haven't ever gotten the point of it. I might consider some day, but I also have a (strong) dislike towards it.
A very good friend of mine has been pushing me/telling me to do breathing exercises. I haven't made a habit of it yet, but that's something easier I can get behind, and it's also very good for you.
Again, I don't practice this regularly myself, but feels like a some kind of alternative to straight on meditation.
      ruclips.net/video/rIyH-LOrZo4/видео.html
I can link you one (easy) exercise, but there are loads of different ones. But generally focussing on better breathing and doing small exercises here and there are really good for you.
Generally we all breath wrong, and even with being asthmatic all my life never ever has a single doctor mentioned the benefits of breathing correctly.

I have back problems for me it works to sit in my favorite couch not in lotus position and I also sometimes meditate lying down, but I dont meditate late at night before bed or early in the morning, e.g. when im sleepy. Initially meditating gave me anxiety (or rather deciding to meditate) and I had to be basically forced to do it (strongly motivated by my mom because she knew it would help me). Something changed at some point, i think when I decided it wasnt that different to just not doing anything for 10 mins, and being ok with anything that did happen. I suggest breathing normally, sitting normally and maybe even looking at the floor instead of closing your eyes.

I use MARC UCLA frEe app and meditation s all free. Has helped me with pain management, manage anxiety/depression/ and their 13 min scan before bed and I am out. Not a cure all but helps me mentally to manage these things better. Handy tool. Basically mindfulness meditation has helped immensely. I find I crave it now. Sometimes it does not go well too. All part of it. Since you are going to keep it up maybe another update in another 30 days.

one should never try meditation in hoody. It gives u so much energy and u would feel hot and sweaty even while just sitting. Plus try sitting down, cross legged, straight spine.

Seconding AmmaLittle Owl. Fidgeting is the most normal human reaction to sitting alone with your thoughts. If you let them just come and go it gets better over time. And for me the ability to do this comes and goes, usually for a few months or years at a time (currently, nope). Be patient and kind with yourself.
