In this lore, vampires and lycans are not creatures created by magic, just sort of biology, so they're not undead. None of the normal "rules" from mythology apply.
I love the biological aspect of this series! in so many vampire/werewolf movies their origins are tied to magic or other supernatural forces. This series did a great job in rooting the vampire & lycans' history, anatomy & abilities in a more (lack of a better term) "realistic" sense, in that they appear as something akin to a newly discovered species rather than a mystery that defies natural law.
@@dre3k78 There are species that can revert to a baby-like state and grow up all over again repeatedly and are therefore biologically immortal meaning they can't die from age but can still die to predators. It's not unrealistic for a species to remain the same age especially with the buffed healing factor. Also if we consider the possibility that the virus changed their cells to function like a virus then they would be immune to aging since viruses don't age in the same way biological matter does since it uses other hosts to reproduce which could also explain the need for blood, blood being the host material to fuel their sustained and constant cellular division.
In this universe bite is enough to transform (no need for drinking anything) and vampires can have children - they are more super-humans than living corpses there. I think people shall not apply universal standards to all vampires and werewolves in media: they are bit different in every franchise. 😉
@@dre3k78 in the Underworld universe vampires that are born grow to adulthood and then stop aging. The ones that are turned via a bite stay as they were when it happened. Its about the same in Blade.
If it were universal standards she was going by then she would know that Dhampyr are children of vampires and predates any of her choose fantasy fiction historical stories. Which I'm assuming is likely that hilariously bad twilight series.
To be fair, there really isn't one version of vampires. I've seen versions where they can be pregnant and be born as vampires (Blade for example), where they walk in the sun (Hammer Horror - sometimes), where they only be hurt by fire, where they're immune to fire, all sorts. So saying they're not true to vampire lore is perhaps a little unfair 🙂
That's just a very recently modern adaptation that makes very little sense. Mostly invented by people who want their cake and to eat it too. They also want to let them walk in the sunlight, not be dead or cold, have reflections, be fully vibrantly alive, have zero vulnerabilities or supernatural hindrances, so on. "Let's make something very different with specific drawbacks... but let's do away with the differences and remove the drawbacks so they're completely humanized. Yay, so unique!" Sooo.... it's just a human who doesn't age. gotcha. very... creative... (not) So if they have pointy teeth, they're a vampire, if they have pointy ears they're an elf... and the melodrama and over-exaggerated combat sequences stays the same for both.
@@unclebounce1495 Not really a modern thing. Dracula was not harmed by sunlight, just weakened. Carmilla, which was written even earlier than Dracula, also had their vampire unharmed by sunlight. The Hammer Horror films were in the seventies, so even those are half a century old now. To quote 'Vampedia', "In fact, the weakness to sunlight is a modern addition to vampire folklore and literature, which only goes back to the German film Nosferatu, making it one of the newer additions to the vampire lore." Not having a reflection seems to have started in Dracula. Point being that there really isn't much consistency with vampire lore in general.
@@stephenhumphreys9149 I'm well aware of vampire history and the variations in different cultures. That's irrelevant and quite pathetic of you. You completely ignored the point of my comment to make some inane comment about a technicality. In every culture, the vampire is very much so inhuman. Most are more demonic or spiritual than any modern adaptation. Dracula is probably the most humanized version of non-modern mythological vampire, and it is treated very much so as an inhuman creature. Sunlight is not the significant factor. Yes, older versions are even more inhuman. That's the point. The point I made is they want to utilize a "different creature" as an element or character in a story but do not want the drawbacks and restrictions of having to actually treat them differently in the story. it's immature and lazy storytelling. It's superficial distinction and pointless. These "vampires" could just be the humans in the matrix, could be a goth version of super girl and super man, could be modernized legolas elves (Hellboy 2 did that and made them more distinct than most modern vampires), could be any pointlessly different "creature" that is just a lazily reskinned human. "humans with a disease." Riiight. Well real human diseases (autism, addictions, personality disorders, etc.) are weirder and more distinct than this "special" disease. It's the lite version of mythology. It's fake mythology. If they didn't tell you they were different creatures by using a different name, they'd be completely interchangeable with any other "cool hollywood figure" of modern times. There's nothing wrong with making your own adaptation. There IS something wrong when the distinction is so mild and pointless it might as well not be there. This is Fast and the furious with guns. matrix with fangs (that's it, nothing more). Hot topic version of legolas or Heroes or X-men - x-men usually have more distinction. Night of the living dead at turbo speed except they're not dead and the "terrible disease" lets them act completely normal with no real affect on human behavior. Vegans are weirder than most modern vampires. They're just humans with a different name and a cool superhuman power of some sort (fill in the blank). That's the problem. Lazy and immature creature design. There is no creation. It's just hissing like pissy cats and watching red liquid flow through IV tubes. Otherwise, "immortal humans" through and through. Maybe they're the last of the Dunedain, blessed with long life. lol Hopefully that's enough examples to get the point across now. Shyt creature design of Mr. Potato head version of just "ageless human" by another name, no more depth or thought than that.
@@unclebounce1495 Wow, that was pretty hostile! I was just trying to make a counterpoint as your point started with you saying that something - you didn't specify what - was 'a very modern adaptation', and I just pointed out some examples of what I had been talking about that were not particularly modern. Do some stories take the humanisation of vampires too far? Yes, obviously - the disease take isn't one I'm particularly fond of either, for example. But saying that all modern vampire stories (I'll assume you meant modern as in 'from when vampire literature first appeared', as the vampires in literature pretty much started like this) are lazy because they humanise something which in many cultures aren't particularly complicated creatures also seems a pretty basic take on things. After all, vampires have almost certainly become as popular as they are because they're so close to human, not in spite of it. I think that the point you're trying to make is that vampires as protagonists are sometimes treated too much like superheroes with a dietary problem, and there's some truth in that - I would definitely agree that vampires as antagonists are more interesting because by necessity you generally have to tone down the monstrous things they do if they're the 'hero' of your story as opposed to the villain.
She didn't. lol But then she also doesn't know that Dhampir exists, the offspring of vampires. Which "everyone knows" is what Van Helsing is. Created in stories well before all of the modern adaptations in the 1800's I think she has a chosen bias around stories created in the 1900's
There's an interesting backstory to this movie. Kate Beckinsale (Selene) was married to Michael Sheen (Lucian) when they were very young, and the director Len Wiseman was, at the time, married to Kate. Talk about a hollywood menage a trois.
@@SaintsRuleTheHood You're right. I had to wikipedia the whole mess. Apparently Kate and Michael were never married, but Les did leave his wife for Kate. Those damn vampires. 😄
I do like the concept that someone was able to use the Black Plague to his advantage, making him stronger. The same mutation causing his sons to become a vampire and a werewolf when bitten by a bat and wolf.
To make a vampire only requires a bite in this world (just like Twilight and many other movies/stories). The drinking of vampire blood to create vampires is from the Dracula origin stories (not all vampire stories have the same rules/origins. A large percentage of them don't (Twilight, Byzantium, From Dusk Till Dawn, etc.)). Pregnancy is rare in vampire movies, but they do happen (Twilight). They tend to be an exception or special cases. 2nd movie just as good or better. The others aren't that bad. Watch them all.
Filmed with a low budget with some very good practical effects. Lucian running after the car and catching up with it. The car was dragging a platform that Lucian’s stuntman was running on. No matter how fast the car, the running stuntman will always overtake the car. Genius. Stuntman walking on stilts with the knees backwards under the Lycan suit. The twist… Lucian is the hero. The sequel Underworld: Evolution ranks up there with AlienS, and T2: Judgement Day, expanding on the original with a bigger budget! The third sequel is a prequel, Lucian’s origin story, and the darkest in the franchise. The lore for Underworld is explained. It is not the ‘classic’ story of vampires, Biss. Michael would have been a MORE powerful hybrid had it been Amelia’s blood with Lucian’s bite. I have all five films in my DVD collection. I for one, love the whole franchise. Erica, actress Sophia Myles, will get a vampire TV series of her own, a human character who falls in love with a vampire hero.

Oh my god, finally someone comes around to Underworld, i love this series. When i was in psychiatric hospital i had my dad bring me the Blueray player and my group and i had the best weekend of action, gore and cheesy writing.
This film gave me a lifelong crush on Kate Beckinsale. Saw it the week it came out, I was only 14. Been a favourite of mine since, one of those movies where I know it isn't particularly mindblowing but it's a comfortable nostalgia film for me that I adore.
The moment I saw this video I pressed the like button. I enjoyed your reaction and I'm glad you reacted to it because not a lot of people react to the Underworld movies for some reason
Vampires are whatever the writer wants them to be. They are fictitious creatures that take on whatever properties or traits the creator wants. Nobody knows what a vampire can actually do because they aren't real. Just because one person writes a vampire one way, doesn't necessarily mean that all vampires have to follow that paradigm.
These vampires are biological, not magical. In other words, they don't sparkle. It's a very interesting take on vampire lore. The second movie is worth seeing as well.
@@dre3k78 classic vampirism is classified as undead, in this interpretation they are not undead. Hence having the ability to have children. It's biological.
Twilight vampires are not magical they are biological as well. Their former human cells are hardened and crystallized, which gives them their sparkling super strong bodies
The vampire and werewolf rules/origins in the Underworld franchise are different than traditional lore. It has a lot of sci fi elements. The vampires aren't actually undead but a living immortal species. They can have children just like in Blade franchise.
The movie was heavily inspired by Vampire: The Masquerade, a TTRPG game that was very popular in late 90s and early 00s. It was so inspired that White Wolf, the publisher of Vampire: The Masquerade put on a lawsuit before the theatrical release of Underworld for 17 instances of copyright infringement. Nothing really came out of it at both companies, Sony Pictures and White Wolf settled the case privately.
1:00 One of the reasons I watch reaction videos is to test myself if I remember the movie as well as I think I do. RV's give the perfect amount of aha! without having to sit through the whole thing.... Thank you. :)
@bissflix Glad you liked the movie Biss! Yeah it took a little inspiration from history! Not sure how much research was put into it! But it was noticable for me too immediately! The name Corvin might be familiar from Hungarian/Romanian history One it not of the most famous Hungarian kings by folklore was called Matthias Corvinus. He was born in Cluj-Napoca Transylvania and was king of Hungary and Transylvania between 1458-1490 iikr. Fun fact: Most of the outside scenes were shot in Hungary :)
Now, I've been a huge fan of both the fictional and real Vlad Tepes/Dracula since I was a little kid and have always wanted to visit your homeland, but the only reason Romania is known so much for vampires is because a 19th century Irish writer decided to make a great Wallachian prince the star of his novel.
As I'm sure you know by now since you saw the movie that the Lycans and Vampires use everything they have to try to kill each other. Special bullets that has UV properties to kill vampires, to silver bullets to kill werewolves. And yes, they use their teeth, fangs, and claws up close and personal. This is war! lol
It's not the suit It's the woman in the suit. Kate or biss. It's biss She's cuter and look more cuddley and she has an empathetic heart. Kate probably does too. Because that's true beauty
Michaels hybrid form does kinda make sense. Lycans (according to the lore bitten by a wolf) transform into werewolves, vamps (according to the lore bitten by a bat) don't transform that much. So the hybrid transforms into a kind of were-bat instead.
I think the necessity of drinking the vampire's blood to change, is a fairly recent addition to the lore. I distinctly remember from my young days, hearing "The heart must die from lack of blood..." Bwing the requirement.
8:15 "So Viktor is dead." Of course he's dead!!! He's a frikkin' vampire!!! DUH!!! 19:58 "Jesus, Viktor, you've had better days, my man." No doubt - he hasn't a bath of shower in centuries. It no wonder people don't get close to him at the beginning. 🤢 34:17 "He's the main villain, right?" He has been portrayed as such but Viktor is actually the villain: he had his daughter burned at the stake for loving an "inferior". Lucien may have sought revenge but Viktor was hellbent on exterminating the lycans. Yeah, I would say stay with "Underworld", check out the remaining four. On a personal note: Selena's outfit is definitely you, Biss - I have no doubt that you would make it look good. 👀
That's not how it works in this franchise. In Underworld vampires are alive just like humans, but they can go into a deathlike hibernation. It doesn't make complete sense but in the lore they are a living species.

The historical Corvinus was Hungarian, not Romanian. The name probably refers to Matthias Corvinus, who was King of Hungary in the mid-15th Century. Like his contemporary Vlad Tepes, he fought against the Turks, and the two were sometimes allies and sometime enemies. When it comes to vampire legend, the other famous Hungarian is Elizabeth Bathory who was accused of killing young peasant women and bathing in their blood to maintain her youth. Fictional vampire lineages include the names Orlok, from F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film, "Noferatu," an unlicensed adaption of "Dracula," in which the name was used to avoid copyright problems with Bram Stoker, as well as the name Karnstein, which was the surname of the lesbian vampire Carmilla, from the novel of the same name by Sheridan Le Fanu, which actually predated the publication of Stoker's "Dracula" by around 25 years.
Matei Corvin, was Romanian, descended from Ioan de Hunedoara. He Latinized his surname to be more easily accepted by the Hungarian nobility. Interestingly, he went so far as to deny his Romanian origins, starting to hate everything Romanian, one of the reasons for the imprisonment of Vlad III Dragulia (the Impaler).
Carmilla and Elizabeth Bathory are one and the same person. Those legends aren't really legends, by the way. More than 80 skeletons that were once young girls were found there. Draw your own conclusions. Not "Noferatu", but "Nosferatu", and the origins are Greek on the Latin branch. I don't know where you copied from, but you copied badly. You have a 3 in history, because you didn't study, a 3 in genealogy, for the same reason, and a 2 in philology for copying from your colleague.
@@UmbraFulgur Yes, "Noferatu" was a typo. It is good that you caught it because the word is so obscure that anyone reading the comment surely would have been confused but for your correction. But where are you getting the idea that Carmilla is the Countess Bathory? Other than being female, there is nothing similar between the eponymous character and the historical person.
Yes, react to all of them, because they will are good in my opinion. This is my favorite franchise ever. Every vampire movie and series is always different to what they can or can't do, regardless of the original mythology.

Yeah, this is more your kind of movie. A complete departure from The Last of the Mohicans, which I liked a lot. But, I'm a guy who loves Lawrence of Arabia, too. Epic movies.
theres both werewolfs and lycans in this universe. the werewolves can never change back to human form and are much stronger and beastly/furry. lycans came about later and could change at will but were slightly smaller and less furry then the predecessor. the lore in this series is pretty deep and we still dont even have all of it after 5 movies.
The black actor with the deep voice is Kevin Grevioux, he is actually the writer of the movie, and that is his real voice. And Michael Sheen (Lucian) is Kate Backinsale's ex husband and father of her oldest daughter, while Len Wiseman, the director of the movie was Kate's boyfriend at the time they did the movie.
Before filming this movie Selene (Kate Beckinsale) was married to Lucian (Michael Sheen) but they split after filming and Kate got into a relationship with the movies director Les Wiseman.. who she married a year later. Viktor (Bill Nighy) is a bit similar here to his character in his next film - Davy Jones from Pirated Of The Caribbean: Dead Mans Chest - similar vocals and a nearly immortal character.
So, now you need to see Interview with the Vampire for a good vampire movie :D Also, was in love with Beckinsale after that movie, how beautiful she is.
I would pick vampires myself, and I've always liked the movie a lot, and I like that they were willing to go outside the 'traditional' depiction of vampires to do something else, like having vampirism (and lycanism) be more of a virus than some kind of mystical thingy. Haha
I did like the living vampire aspect.
They still dont age in this movie.
But how does their aging process work if they are born?
@@dre3k78 in the Underworld universe vampires that are born grow to adulthood and then stop aging. The ones that are turned via a bite stay as they were when it happened. Its about the same in Blade.
@@Nandrall18-25 Ok i see. I wonder what age is considered adulthood?
If it were universal standards she was going by then she would know that Dhampyr are children of vampires and predates any of her choose fantasy fiction historical stories. Which I'm assuming is likely that hilariously bad twilight series.
@@Nandrall18-25 not really thos who got bitten also grow untill adulthood, as i remember Selene was a child when Victor turned her
To be fair, there really isn't one version of vampires.
I believe technically Blade would be a Dhampir sort of like the BloodRayne character.
"I hope they give us an original story.."
Oh.. I think you'll approve.
She didn't. lol
But then she also doesn't know that Dhampir exists, the offspring of vampires.
Which "everyone knows" is what Van Helsing is. Created in stories well before all of the modern adaptations in the 1800's
I think she has a chosen bias around stories created in the 1900's
There's an interesting backstory to this movie. Kate Beckinsale (Selene) was married to Michael Sheen (Lucian) when they were very young, and the director Len Wiseman was, at the time, married to Kate. Talk about a hollywood menage a trois.
He wasn’t married to her at the time. The director and Kate fell in love during the filming while she was married to Sheen.
The plague was one of a number of instances throughout history of deliberate population control

Just a little addon: In 2003 Czechoslovakia didn't existed for a decade. The film was shot in Hungary (see IMDB)

I loved this whole series.
This film is why I'm attracted to vampires

@@dre3k78 Right. The idea of Immortality sort of has a Magical edge to it.

In some vampire lore you have to drink their blood. In others the virus is transfered through the salava.
Underworld: Rise of the Lycans is absolutely worth watching. The 2nd movie is a guilty pleasure. Don't bother with the last one.
Now, I've been a huge fan of both the fictional and real Vlad Tepes/Dracula since I was a little kid and have always wanted to visit your homeland, but the only reason Romania is known so much for vampires is because a 19th century Irish writer decided to make a great Wallachian prince the star of his novel.
there were 3 elders - amelia, who was in the train - marcus, who was still in his coffin and victor, so there is only 1 left.
Right, I forget who the other Elder was, in the third coffin. I used to know this.
As I'm sure you know by now since you saw the movie that the Lycans and Vampires use everything they have to try to kill each other. Special bullets that has UV properties to kill vampires, to silver bullets to kill werewolves. And yes, they use their teeth, fangs, and claws up close and personal. This is war! lol

27:56 theyre Lycins. the guy with the syringe was the lycin that was doing the lycin gladiator match earlier in the film.
I’m all in for Kate . She defies aging . And she’s a hell of a prankster also.
Michaels hybrid form does kinda make sense. Lycans (according to the lore bitten by a wolf) transform into werewolves, vamps (according to the lore bitten by a bat) don't transform that much. So the hybrid transforms into a kind of were-bat instead.
"Hold my beer" Marcus
I think the necessity of drinking the vampire's blood to change, is a fairly recent addition to the lore. I distinctly remember from my young days, hearing "The heart must die from lack of blood..." Bwing the requirement.
I love that you came at this from the perspective of "I'm a vampire, and I will be judging," that's how I approach any vampire media too lol
If that were true she would know the real historical ideas of this fiction. And not 1900's garbage.
Glad your starting this series, it's one of my favorites 👍
8:15 "So Viktor is dead." Of course he's dead!!! He's a frikkin' vampire!!! DUH!!!
19:58 "Jesus, Viktor, you've had better days, my man." No doubt - he hasn't a bath of shower in centuries. It no wonder people don't get close to him at the beginning. 🤢
34:17 "He's the main villain, right?" He has been portrayed as such but Viktor is actually the villain: he had his daughter burned at the stake for loving an "inferior".

Shame! Don't forget about Varney; vampire O.G. extraordinaire, anteceding Carmilla by a quarter of a century.
@@SchizoidPD I haven't heard of that one. From what book does he come?
Every vampire movie and series is always different to what they can or can't do, regardless of the original mythology.

lycans came about later and could change at will but were slightly smaller and less furry then the predecessor.
the lore in this series is pretty deep and we still dont even have all of it after 5 movies.
The black actor with the deep voice is Kevin Grevioux, he is actually the writer of the movie, and that is his real voice.
