OP Ground Zero is wrong. I hear this all the time and it's just not true. Platinum players are in the 87th to 96th percentile (give or take). Therefore Platinum is high ELO. Gold cannot make that claim because a good 30% of the community is in Gold. Diamond is like the top 3% of players right before the pros, so that is "very high" ELO. Master and Challengers are of course the elite, but I don't see how that should diminish the achievement of plat players.
Oh man, i remember, i was really fun to build 5 warmogs 1 atma's impaller and be unkillable. Now i'm feeling nostalgic about all these metas, and been happy that i was since season 2.
ahhh season 2 the memories!!!! i stopped playing this game in late 2013 due to getting older and getting a job and other personal reasons but man my drive to play again has been sky high but everyone says the game is shit now and all my friends are obviously the same age as me and have families and things now i just dont think it'd be the same
@toot I started playing in Season 1 and still come back from time to time to league. Sure some changes suck and the game got somehow more complex, but it's still hella fun. Of course I dont play like 8hours per day any more, have no 5v5ranked team, nor am I Diamond again, but the game still fulfills its purpose to me. Having fun, playing with different champs (no endless grind with the same champion), 1v1 and team game ... I'm 26 now and say you should just try it out again :D
Play casual. You shouldn't need to devote your life to a game to enjoy it! I've been playing recently with a bunch of NYPD guys that are twice your age and brand new to the game. Sure, they ain't playing ranked but there is laughter, which is what counts.
Damn dude, as a pre season one player this really hit the mark. I've been through most of these metas, I remember the atmogs (we used to do a full 5 man team with atmogs or metagolem with trinity just to troll around), the black cleaver meta (had a lot of fun with pantheon and renekton there), the awful yorick top (which I did play sometime), the "build everything tank" (tank akali, for example), the dreaded elixir of fortitude (as a nasus player, that was awful to play against), the sunfire stacking (both garen, and evelyinn for trolling), the TP, the 2 v 1 sustain top (used to take vlad then, and renekton). Hell, I remember a time when Lee's E was bugged for us south americans, it allowed us to cast it twice due to lag issues, and it did double damage. It was fun to have an edge on something lol. It all reminds me how much the game has changed, in visuals, meta, balance, items, everything. I appreciate how much effort you put on your videos, I now this is an older one now since it's 2021 but it's still a good look to the past. Good job.
@@bobdickens3674 Conqueror was never a busted keystone so many people just didn't understand the math. It dealt FAR less damage than any other damage keystone options like Electrocute. And most of its damage was tied to the AD that it gave. The true damage conversion added (and adds) so little damage as to be negligible. But try explaining to people that it only converts some of your damage to true, that it doesn't add any new damage and their fuckin eyes glaze over like "but true damage." But you don't even have to understand how it works to fucking verify how shit the keystone was and is. Just take it and look at its damage dealt throughout the game, then take Electrocute or even fucking Arcane Comet and see how the numbers will be multiples higher. Honestly Conqueror tilts me so fucking much because it literally only had 1 patch where it was even really good. And that was because it gave a lot of AD early game. The only use the keystone has now is for that 8% pre-mitigation healing. But even then it's trash because you only get that after its fully stacked, which to do so you'll have already blown most if not all of your kit and several basic attacks to do. Its completely trash now on all but a few champions that stack it really quickly without having to burn 90% of their damage to do so, like Riven. And even then it's trash because the converted true damage is so low, and the healing is win-harder since you cannot use it to sustain the lane but it only works in all-ins. Should just be freakin removed at this point. Even best case scenario for it right now is when enemies have a lot of armor. At 140 armor it increases your damage by 11.2% at 200 armor it increases your damage by 16%. At 50 armor its only increasing your damage by 4%. 100 Armor is the point where it increases your damage by 8%. That is to say that after you've already burned most of your kit just to get this increased damage against high armor targets its effect is to increase your damage by relatively very little, consider that against 200 armor champions your damage is reduced heavily. You're only increasing what's left over by 16% The fight is already decided by the time you've stacked Conqueror, you're either gonna win, or you're going to lose, conqueror isn't powerful enough to make a difference. And it hasn't been for a very very long time.
Yeah i started playing on Yorick release day back in 2011, that little clip got me right in the feels, sent me back to being a 16 y/o Ashe main all over again. but as soon as season 2 kicked in i became a top laner/almost full time support. i went through all these meta's and i prefer the TP tank metas makes the game a true team game, tanks can solo kill these days aswell they bridged a gap but maybe too much. RIP solo lane Wukong after that black cleaver fix in season 3. will he ever return?
I think the solocarry potential is much lower than for example in season 4, i mean its still possible but different, now its more team based, back in s4 if u got fed u could carry the game alone easier. Now its much more complicated to carry alone.
I love all the time and effort you put into this video. I joined league in march 2018 because a friend recommended it. As someone who not just studies current items and metas but also past metas and histories or teams items and gameplay I really appreciate it. For some reason through all the nostalgia and memories, there was one stronger nostalgic feeling. And that was hearing a melody of "Autumn Voyage" whilst you were talking
Remember back in the days when Jax could dodge with his abilities and Tabis and Dodge-Runes still existed? All together he had 33% dodge chance!!!!!! And he could stun after every dodge! Conclusion: He was a fcking MONSTER XD i loved it
I miss top. It was my first main back since 2012 and boy was it the best out of all the roles. You just didn’t get the intimacy you felt against your opponent in any other lane. I’m getting all these ptsd flashbacks to black cleaver and elixir. But the honest truth was that if you were patient enough and knew when to attack it was nearly impossible to lose top lane no matter the comp. that’s what I love about it. If you get beat or go against a riven just afk farm and come back (unless you were the riven, then just solo baron). Sadly after a while it would become harder and harder to avoid the tank meta. And when the game and player base forced me to choose between fun and team comp it really grated on my enjoyment and I eventually switched to mid then stopped playing all together around 2016-17. LoL imo was the best game ever up until 2015-ish and I’ve never gotten the same competitive drive I got out of league since. League was cancer but it was my cancer.
Meh, he's biased because he's a toplaner. In the end of the day, every player complains about it's counter. ADC's/mages complain about assasins, bruisers/tanks complain about ADC's, assasins complain about tanks/bruisers etc.
@@rickvangils100 nah its more like top lane is an island so if you get hard countered by a pick with no weaknesses he stonewalls and neither can play the game to win
@Gunner_kek Please try not to generalize everything. Many assassin mains complain about other assassins that have better burst than them, ADC mains complain about ADCs that have either a better laning or a stronger scaling.
Great video but I think you forgot to include a huge point, the shift to tanks during season 6 was heavily impacted by the Juggernaut update Riot did towards tanks and them redisgning many champions.
I am/used to be a kennen main, i loved playing him with my blood moon skin before the new runes... Now hes barely playable.. Not because he was nerfed... Because of the new runes and meta, i used to be able to, if i played my cards right, bully the top laner and outplay etc... Now i do like negative damage cuz its only tanks top/ no good ap assassin runes... Makes me sad man
Man you brought so many memories back to me. I used to main top back in season 2 and 3 bc people like fiora, irelia, and udyr it makes me miss how fun the game used to be back then. If I could play that state of the game today I would definately say yes.
Please make one of these videos for other roles. This has got to be one of my favourite videos of all time, I love seeing the history of league, and analysing individual roles is so interesting to me.
I remember mostly midlane as I was mostly midlaner back in beta and launch of the game. Ashe and TF were always picked mid because of her ability to gank because of their ultimate. Toplane was mostly picks that could be good on their own but weren't as good for ganking if placed mid. I genuinely miss the time when there was only 30 champs, it was so much fun and so diverse. Ashe mid in particular was such a simple but fun matchup.
sounds like hashinshin towerdiving someone with hourglass and then complaining how that item is broken (not saying it isnt but you probably shouldnt dive someone who has it)
You most certainly can play a tank top, but it requires your teammates to be competent in order to win as you cant carry as hard as you could when playing a tank champion
Tobias Schäfer honestly I was a bit of a taric main before his rework but I don't remember much from him. I've been playing since season 2 but I just don't remember much of the early seasons. My memory is trash and I feel like I missed out on a lot of good memories.
"Less and less about 1v1" I have been playing league since 2010 late December and I can tell you it's half true due to the fact that top lane was 2 players before riot started encouraging jungle with those epic jungle items I am not sure but if I recall correctly hunter machete was the only jg item back then
Udyr Meta missing ^^' (Beta Player here) A bunch of really important items are missing, like Gold per 5 meta or Innervating Locket Udyr. Also Warmogs was strong way before and without Atmas. Force of Nature or FoN was the reason, massive regen with Warmogs.
FoN was insane. I remember using a tank build on Singed and Cho that took Warmogs and FoN and unless you ran under the spawn turret, you just could not die at all.
I was a top laner back in Season 3. I was mostly a Renekon player, but I remember playing lots of different champions. (To be fair, i wasn't the best at league back then).
Then i have good news for you . He very recently announced on Reddit that he will be shortly getting back on streaming league again , like the good old days !
Well I mean Lucian, Fiora, Camille, Jayce, Yasuo, Quinn, Kennen - are they all suddenly not counted? Yeah some champions were forgotten but at least we got some diversity in top lane. Back in season 3-4 if I remember correctly there were just Renektons Rumbles Shens everywhere + maybe a couple more champs. Like, you literally could not pick most champs into Rene.
I was a beta tester for LoL. It had issues for the start. Jax could go into 5v1 fights an win back during beta and they didn't fix it until after launch. But I loved the game even still... until the meta formed. I came from DOTA where you picked counters and had a wide variety of lane strategies. There was no bruser top every time, jungler every time, mid caster every time, carry/support bottom every time. I HATE being locked into one set strategy. It's not fun. They are so set on the meta that you will get reported and banned for trolling if you don't do what the other players demand you do. For a while I would just keep making alts to play at low levels where the meta wasn't enforced but that wasn't fun.
dont make up that bs please, i agree with you on the first part but please XD "you will get reported and banned for trolling if you don't do what the other players deamnd you do." 1st, you can get reported by anybody, for no reason at all. 2nd if u get reported for no reason at all you will not be punished, report will vanish. 3rd "banned for trolling" yes if u run it down, go 0/15 or some shit, if you play zilean top, or whatever the fucking champion you want, you can't get banned for that, you won't be punished as long as you don't intentionally feed. you can pick sona top, get reported by 9 people in ur match, you wont get punished as long as u didn't int so dont make up so much bullshit please.
season 9: towers deal a lot more damage. so now that divers are dead and pretty much most divers are bruiser and assassins, we're back to square one where the sustain and heavy push will be the meta
@@soulsemblance3163 what? what lane? what strengh? if there's one thing that I learned from playing the game is that armor is anti-fun, you rush an armor component and no one can kill you also, bruisers and assassins gets demolished by tanks 1v1, tanks have higher base AD, high armor, and the CC to to put you in place to keep on hitting you.
@@tymtrppr3 I agree, but many people forget that tower damage increases every couple of minutes, it's not early game damage that should get buffed, it's mid to late game that you need it, so it's the increase. fun fact, the increase starts by the outer tower only, until it's 20 minutes, and then goes to the inner ones, which means the inner towers are in fact weaker than te outer ones. pretty dumb concept
@@ikeu6433 small window = dead. getting super fed very early in the game JUST to be relevant, means that the champion is dead. a champion that doesn't need to be fed to be relevant is a playable champion. and a champion that destroy everyone even if he's not fed is broken.
Jesus I nearly cried at 14:05 when you said: "...and armor penetration, the OLD version of lethality..." Man makes me feel old, I still know it as armor pen :(
These criticisms are kind of dumb. Using a similar template for something doesn't immediately make it bad, or even a ripoff. Tons of people do Let's Plays or ASMR or Makeup Tutorials or whatever else you can think of on RUclips, but is there any single best person in every category, and all others who make similar content should be discarded? Almost every book/movie follows the format of hook, body, and conclusion. This guy has obviously done his research and has put the video together in such a way as to provide the information in an entertaining way. I've been subbed to Summoning Salt for a while, and I'm glad that he's influenced others to make informative, entertaining videos about the history of some games, regardless of what aspect.
WoW I had forgotten all of these cheesy metas and strats tnx for reminding us and for taking time to make this but ur right the impact of bruisers like riven fiora Jayce etc aren't that good... I got a 16 winstreak with yorick in ranked! Yorick is a tank that 1shots with Q and it was a lot of fun for me. At the end of the day bruiser players must go out of Rito HQ and have a sign that says : MAKE TOP LANE GREAT AGAIN! (and bruisers)
everytime i see a riven/pant/ and that cyborh chick top, they end the game like 10+/2/10+ every single time. players that know how to play bruisers, eat tanks alive.
Not so sure about that. I'm playing a lot of Riven, and generally, if you are against a tank, you either win early or lose the matchup for a long time. You lack good roams because you really need flash to gap close, so your impact on the rest of the map is limited while towers are still up. Then once you get to late game, the comp and the performance of the rest of your lanes is going to have a better impact late game. It can be difficult to burst through carries, with stopwatches/GAs/lockets/knight's vows/exhaust/shields/heals/etc. And this is if I can get fed on Riven. I'm good enough that I can say I will win the 1v1 against almost any champion, but that doesn't matter if I get ganked. If a gank results in even a small HP advantage against someone like Nasus, he can safely farm to 6 and my lane is now unwinnable. If I die the lane is completely lost and my team will have to deal with a fed Nasus. It sucks playing in a meta that is entirely decided by the jungler, and playing carry top lane is essentially a dice roll if you don't duo with a jungler.
Aatrox has actually seen some solo q daylight lately but will probably never be seen in competitive. The items he likes are expensive as fuck and that's not a good thing to have in an organized setting.
I just fought an Aatrox top lane and it was terrible for me. I killed him like three times without death and he manages to fuck my team he's got a pretty good win rate too haha so weird how he is treated.

Aatrox was really good when zephyr was an item.
it basically gave everything that he needs
Irelia too
Godyr
Aatrox before rework was top3 toplaner RIP Aatrox who got replaced by Riven
I wiuldnt agree more i miss Full attack speed aatrox plus zyphyr
Oh man, i remember, i was really fun to build 5 warmogs 1 atma's impaller and be unkillable. Now i'm feeling nostalgic about all these metas, and been happy that i was since season 2.

i stopped playing this game in late 2013 due to getting older and getting a job and other personal reasons but man my drive to play again has been sky high but everyone says the game is shit now and all my friends are obviously the same age as me and have families and things now i just dont think it'd be the same
What age may i ask that your friends are having families?
24
Good job.
Nowadays all I see is renekton, riven, irelia, Jax with nothing but conqueror
Jax is trash in low elo, too many counterpicks now. I play him jungle
tyttus imagine thinking counterpicks is a thing in low elo lol
It’s because conqueror was a busted Keystone and everyone could abuse it.
I'm pretty much an Illaoi one trick now. Though i still pick Heimerdinger top on occasion if i feel like bullying some thicc bois. .
But try explaining to people that it only converts some of your damage to true, that it doesn't add any new damage and their fuckin eyes glaze over like "but true damage."
But you don't even have to understand how it works to fucking verify how shit the keystone was and is.
You're only increasing what's left over by 16%
The fight is already decided by the time you've stacked Conqueror, you're either gonna win, or you're going to lose, conqueror isn't powerful enough to make a difference.
And it hasn't been for a very very long time.

thank you :D
I started first week of s3 and it was so fucking fun, Riven, Jax, Akali, Lee Sin, Olaf and TF were my favs to use it on.
My exactly thoughts
I think the solocarry potential is much lower than for example in season 4, i mean its still possible but different, now its more team based, back in s4 if u got fed u could carry the game alone easier. Now its much more complicated to carry alone.
when you brought up hotshot at the start, I was expecting for you to play the "HE'S TOO TANKY!" clip.
I love all the time and effort you put into this video. I joined league in march 2018 because a friend recommended it. As someone who not just studies current items and metas but also past metas and histories or teams items and gameplay I really appreciate it.
League was cancer but it was my cancer.
that 1v1 between renekton and nasus brought back memories, i remember when 1v1's between tanks would last at least 10 minutes.
25:57 that's because for some reason ADC players and Riot think that the job of countering tanks should be in bot lane not top lane
It is, for lategame teamfights. But beating a tank in lane really requires you to play 110% on most bruisers.
Not really, you just have to poke them to no end. There are champs that can do it. :)
"ranged champions are too good."
Well thanks a lot Exil now bruisers are played bot lane. xP
@@rickvangils100 you literally couldn't be more wrong mate
@Gunner_kek Please try not to generalize everything. Many assassin mains complain about other assassins that have better burst than them, ADC mains complain about ADCs that have either a better laning or a stronger scaling.

I am/used to be a kennen main, i loved playing him with my blood moon skin before the new runes... Now hes barely playable.. Not because he was nerfed... Now i do like negative damage cuz its only tanks top/ no good ap assassin runes... Makes me sad man
i sometimes feel like im the only person who misses the old tank meta. I've always been a sucker for tanks

*WTF MAN TANK META OP*
Well if you're laning against a tank, chances are if anyone is 1hp, it's not the tank.

You most certainly can play a tank top, but it requires your teammates to be competent in order to win as you cant carry as hard as you could when playing a tank champion

Back in season 3-4 if I remember correctly there were just Renektons Rumbles Shens everywhere + maybe a couple more champs. Like, you literally could not pick most champs into Rene.
Wait reng and kha was disabled? I thought they just always ended up permabanned
amazing to see this from the perspective of a low diamond top laner who stopped in S5 with league, thanks for the video!
respect for all the efford it took you to make this video.🙏🏻
Lol, I got caught off-guard when I suddenly heard Runescape music being played.
Pretty much because of the changes bruisers and assassins get to lane a lot longer and get stronger which makes tanks redundant.
@@soulsemblance3163 what? what lane? what strengh? if there's one thing that I learned from playing the game is that armor is anti-fun, you rush an armor component and no one can kill you
also, bruisers and assassins gets demolished by tanks 1v1, tanks have higher base AD, high armor, and the CC to to put you in place to keep on hitting you.
Towers should deal more damage tho. It’s a dumb concept that with a small amount of armor and hp you can tank 7 tower shots at level 6-7

I feel he should be credited for inspiration or something since its a direct rip of his style
Not going to watch the video for this reason. Even using the same song in the beginning.
Does feel like it lmfao

Wow, good job.
thank you man :D
WoW I had forgotten all of these cheesy metas and strats tnx for reminding us and for taking time to make this but ur right the impact of bruisers like riven fiora Jayce etc aren't that good... I got a 16 winstreak with yorick in ranked! Yorick is a tank that 1shots with Q and it was a lot of fun for me. At the end of the day bruiser players must go out of Rito HQ and have a sign that says : MAKE TOP LANE GREAT AGAIN! (and bruisers)
jayce isn't really a bruiser he's more of a pseudo assassin with poke and yorick isn't a tank he's a bruiser
Sounds like Nasus. Push, 1shot towers and anything else. Tank for days.
everytime i see a riven/pant/ and that cyborh chick top, they end the game like 10+/2/10+ every single time. players that know how to play bruisers, eat tanks alive.
Yorick isn't a tank, he is a Juggernaut
i don't know what today's Top lane about
Aatrox has incredible sustain yet isn't even considered a champion 😂 🤣 😂 🤣
Aatrox has actually seen some solo q daylight lately but will probably never be seen in competitive. The items he likes are expensive as fuck and that's not a good thing to have in an organized setting.
I just fought an Aatrox top lane and it was terrible for me. I killed him like three times without death and he manages to fuck my team he's got a pretty good win rate too haha so weird how he is treated.
Great video! I’ve been in every season except season 1, and I can say for a fact that everything you stated and researched in this video is true. However, this video was also entertaining to watch. I really like the content style, keep doing you!
These videos are so similar to Summoning Salt's speedrunning history videos.
I mean that's not a bad thing I love those videos.
