  • With a lovely, sunny day forecast I took the opportunity to drive to Malvern in the campervan and spend a pleasant morning and afternoon walking up to the top of the hill. Later there was a sandwich.

As a Malverner myself I hope you had a wonderful time in our beautiful town.
Fun Fact: If you carry on straight east from the Worcestershire Beacon then the next highest point exceeding the Malvern Hills is the Ural Mountains in Russia.
Also the name Malvern comes from the Welsh name Moel Bryn meaning “Bare Hill”. In ancient times the Welsh Border was further east and areas like Malvern still reflect Welsh influence, especially as you can see wales to the west on a good day.

I've just left a comment stating the same about its Welsh meaning. Being a Welsh speaker, I translated 'moel' to mean 'bald' (pen moel, would be a bald head), but 'bare' is probably a more appropriate term for a hill. The world 'moel' also has taken on the meaning of 'peak' in Welsh, with Moel Morfydd and Moel Fferna being two peaks near my family home in Wales.

Living in Worcestershire myself I've climbed the Malvern Hills quite a few times. I've just returned from a week in Northumberland and walked a section of Hadrian's Wall at Birdoswald Roman Fort. Well worth doing and the B6318 runs alongside the wall and has a section where the road is built on the wall foundations (constructed as a military road during the Jacobite uprising in the mid-18th C).

We were with you every step of the way,😅 we felt your pain, so thank you for the wonderful treat. 😊You must have been exhausted and ravenous after your climb though, so a mighty cheese and tomato sandwich you had followed by a chocolate little something was very well deserved I think.😁 You did good 👍👏👏

I love the Malvern Hills. I appreciate them even more since doing some family history research and finding that my husband’s mother (who was born in Worcester) has ancestors mostly from the villages just below the Malvern Hills. Isn’t it odd how a connection like that can make you appreciate a place even more. Actually I’ve traced a line of my father’s ancestors back to Worcestershire too, interestingly they seemed to move gradually from Worcestershire to Staffordshire through about three or four generations settling in places beside the canals. I think there’s some social history at play there.

I did think 'I hope David packed a picnic' just as you said you wished you had...! What gorgeous scenery. The Herefordshire side is breathtaking. I found myself reflecting on your existential thoughts on why we always seem to look for a higher hill...I once read a book about that by David Brooks called The Second Mountain...! Hi David from Spain. We live at 750m above sea level and the secret to walking up hills along a road or track is not to go straight ahead but at 45° to the direction of travel. That way the gradient is halved and it is much easier - the penalty is, of course, you walk twice as far - That's the way all the old dears (some as old as 90+) do it.

It feels like such a drastic quality of life change going from living on the foot of the hills into the concrete jungle. Your vlog has brought a smile to my face and has done a great job of showing off the hills in their full majesty. And well done for sticking with it and making it to the beacon.
