You've never heard of this Hyundai luxury sedan -- but the 2002 Hyundai Equus rivaled the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. Today, I'm reviewing the rare, little-known first-generation Equus to show you all the weird quirks and cool features of the unknown original Hyundai Equus.

KitMellow nice rhyme 😂
KitMellow that's exactly what I was thinking! A Korean only car in Dubai by an American..
Luis O get laid bud. jesus..
Luis O He did record a few more reviews there.
@@ollie42 doesn't rhyme.. its pronounced like Sunday- Hyundai
Doug the type of guy to get 370k+ people to watch a 23 minute video about a 15 year old Hyundai
Sic Semper Tyrannis 670K*
As my good pal Heisenberg once said "you're God damn right"
Sic Semper Tyrannis million within a week.
Commenting about 16+ year old screen graphics on a 16 year old car...
A million views... unbelievable. I own the most famous used Hyundai in the planet!
This car looks like a car from GTA
the sentinel?
Ydran Espiritu gta3 cop car
It almost looks like Dexter's car from the Cyberpunk 2077 demo. ALMOST...
it reminds me of the admiral car from San Andreas
STFU
"Like the wealthy Korean businessman you were in 2002."
Oh how I yearn for those days.
I think Hyundai call that hood ornament the 'spirit of Equusy'.
Sorry.
Ye Ma Lol good one mate!
You deserved my like man. You deserved it...
lol
That was funny
LOL

Actually that's probably so the chauffeur can pre heat the seat before their rear passenger gets in, without needing to run around back and press that heated seat button.
THINK DOUG, THINK!
agreed
Doug probably read it but never replied 😂
A brilliant idea!
NOW HEAT MY SEAT.
Wow good theory
Doug DeMuro gg Doug, gg
Doug is the type of guy to wear a medium shirt over an XL undershirt
Lool

It's a wonder he wasn't deported for offences against public decorum.
That’s why Doug is cool, he dresses just like me.
He dresses like an oversized kid, like he went to Oshkosh B'gosh.
South Korean luxury: this
North Korean luxury: rice
북한의 고급스러움은 쌀이구나 ㅋㅋㅋ
Im going to be proud to be white
@Asimzmn something you don't have: a brain
Nope. North Korean luxury is having water
@@shmeatchungus464 Its OK to be white.
A dude named Miguel that lives in Dubai & drives a South Korean car.
Koji Takata haha underrated comment
Koji Takata that's what I was wondering the whole time...LOL!
Ha! I paused when he said that too, and started thinking what kinda guy this Miguel character is. I bet he has an interesting backstory.
Thats a gta character right there folks
Sky Dog Why are you posting this everywhere?
Is no one going to mention how pristine the condition of this car is? Kudos to the owner Miguel for taking such good care of this car.
Thank you! I drove the car for about 40,000km and spent about $11,000 USD in spare parts to make it as perfect as I could. Lots of poor quality chromed plastic. The wheels were next, 1st gen rims look very respectable, compared to the Opirus ones the car had!
When the Equus was first came out, it was a symbol of a successful life in Korea. Most of people dreamed about sitting in the back seat of black Hyundai Equus with being chauffered at that time.
One thing you should know is
The wheels of the Equus in this video are not original factory Equus wheel.
That wheels and its center caps are from Kia Opirus
(original Korean version of Kia Amanti that you know.)
In my guess somebody changed it when car was in Korea before imported.
Hyundai is starting to get a good reputation for quality in the u.s.
Its " chauffeured" , not "shauffered".
This IS OR was their " Avalon" of their vehicle products......the Genesis was also another " top of the line" model ; sort of the ' Lexus' of hyundai.....Both models ARE very comparable to the other two " flagships"....
Hyundai has had an excellent reputation in the US since the ' turn of the century'... and even more so with THE SEVERAL re-designs of both their ' Sonata' line & the 'Elantra' line and that was just the beginning of what is sure to be a product line 2nd to none....
휠 정품아닌거 이거보고 알았어요 ㅋㅋ
Doug the kinda guy to wanna watch Gilmore girls in the back of an Equus

crawfordbrown75 I like how you stole the dudes above you comment
crawfordbrown75 don't steal comments dude
Noel exacly lmao😂😂😂
Can't believe you never commented on that wood trim
Grown from the finest plastic trees!
Really? The new ones apparently have wood. I wouldn't be surprised if it was real wood, I saw a lot of it in cars working in Korea in mid-2000's.
5:05 bruhh please watch with your eyes closed.😂
Oh well all know😂
SpotLife how do u watch with ur eyes closed?
5:06
I hate RUclips sometimes 😂😂😂
this is cursed
Imagine being the chauffeur of a guy with really stinky feet.
LOL !
Rip
I bet richers do it on purpose
S.FLD is "sound field". It's adjusting time alignments, adding echos and such.
Listen to 5:07 with your eyes closed.
weird
mitsubish proudia not hyunde made they just change name logo
"Oh yea.... That's even nicer."
😍 Doug sempai 😍
Curious Airlines 😂😂😂😂😂😂
I actually love the styling of this. So simple, elegant and beautiful.
Just like the Mercedes W126. They took the design from there also from the W140 and maybe the back is from somewhere else or maybe it's even theirs.
That's because the LS400 was such a great choice for them to be "inspired" by. The Koreans were great borrowers of Japanese designs, until they snagged some of the best European car designers and created their own great looks.
Bro this looks like car model #6 from GTA 3 while playing on an iPhone. To each their own, but to say this generic thing is “elegant” is a stretch. Simple, sure. Beautiful? If I squint.
Co-made with Mitsubishi. That explains the Diamante taillights. Great review.
Joel Hug that was exactly my thought
Hyundai had engines created by Mitsubishi and made in Korea
And the pass-through seats which are a very Japanese thing.
Isn't it kind of ironic that the Mitsubishi version failed in Japan, then became a badge engineered Nissan Cima/InifintiQ70 before flopping for good, while Equus ended up evolving to Genesis G90? I wish Mitsubishi would bring their A game back!
This looks like if a Lexus was in Grand Theft Auto
Randy Shredmenton i know, it looks like something you'd see in GTA
Holy crap you’re right. I never thought about that
HAHAHA YES!!!!!
lmao
Lol
That pulling the middle of the front seat gotta be the WEIRDEST QUIRK OF ALL TIME. I think whoever designed that could be a thief when he was a teen, then became a lawyer and eventually became a car designer.
Actually this function was/is quite popular since longtime in japanese luxury models e.q. nissan president. :)
Junky DIY guy its an ski hatch extension for the likes of sideshow bob.
Skoda Superb from mid 2000's also has that.
Also became a politician because they are also thieves.
Junky DIY guy it's also in the Toyota century
I want a review of the V12 Toyota Century!
@GreysonPlayz2 You were right
My friends dad had one of these in Europe, but it was called Hyundai Centennial, the year was 2000-2001. Felt like a king when he drove us, that nostalgia :)
You gou to Dubai and drive Hyundai... That is spirit...
Missing the bombs.
aavlijaner And got the car by someone called Miguel
Lmfao 😂
Hans Vogel yeah hater they don't have that problem in Dubai they getting money
ACURA NSXT ain't no you guys bra I'm from Memphis TN and I'm not Muslim I'm just saying .
I swear Doug filmed enough videos in Dubai for the next 10 years...
Sky Dog just checked his page and there’s nothing about cheating.
Sky dog send link
LIL PUMP I don't see it either
Sadly, this is the last one!
Doug DeMuro I think this was a real even. Well done.
S.FLD is likely short for Sound Field, based off what it does. Right rear seat heater button up front would be for preheating the seat before you arrive to pick up your boss I would assume
I remember when I was a kid in Korea seeing these and thinking whoever's in that car must be super rich ! haha.. The Equus, Benz and BMW was like a status symbol during the early 2000s. Funny stories include bunch of those Equuss' in rich neighborhoods in Seoul would have that winged emblems gone missing because thieves would pluck them off and sell em! There were actual people who'd buy them to put it on their cars and the Equuss' owners would buy them back to have them stolen again XD. Also Equus was known to have a big trunk so kids would talk on the streets horror stories about Equus owners' being Korean gangsters in need of a big trunk to hide corpses ...
Exterior looks like an LS400 hastily rendered for Need For Speed 2
I was working Seoul at the time and the company I was working for allocated me one of these along with a driver. If you've ever tried to drive in Seoul you understand why you have to have a driver. I'm English and I could never get anywhere because I was trained with, oh what was it? Oh yes, traffic rules. Foreigners were a lot better off in the backs of cars and because of what I was doing on behalf of a major animation studio they gave me one of these. And yes, my driver made sure to have my seat warm when he brought the car around. I never cared about performance, I cared about that passenger seat cutout which I used every day being driven to and from my office. Was I embarrassed about being luxuriously chauffeured around in a foreign country? Absolutely, but at the urging of my Korean colleagues, I got used to it. It is a car designed for a specific application, and that is to move the upper echelons of society (and a filthy foreigner who conned his way into a plum assignment) from point A to point B with the minimum of interaction with the world outside. It is in fact, a single person limo.
Unless you were an important person or you have visited around the 90's(when there were I guess you got more than enough. Wish I could show you the situation I am in right now... (in a metro during rush hour)
I lived in Seoul back then as well. I drove a 1991 Kia Capital and never had any problems getting around. They probably gave you a chauffeured car because you're English and would have caused an accident if you drove yourself.
LOL @ Tyler's comment
7:33 This warning texts means "Use after turn on the engine to prevent discharging battery in the car."
와 여기서 한국인 처음봐요 hey korean
JP ㅎㅎ 반가워요
The control for the rear seat heat being upfront is so when the chauffeur is on his way to pick you up the seat will be warm.
guy the type of doug to do this video

my brain hurts now ...
Guy the type of Doug to his get backwards words
Shoutout to the South Korean Mafia boss who had his car sounding like a church!
lol this car was in fact rode by a lot of Mafia bosses

He even looks like him somewhat. Same shaped face and eyes and eye color. I think he's secretly related.
He even hits the occasional squeaky high note when he speaks.
yeah he does look and sound like leno's son
SFLD stands for Stereo Field, and the settings are different reverberation effects.
Angie Whitlock or sound field depending on which car company you're dealing with
At 7:00, it says "주행중" in Korean, which means "driving." Hyundai (by Korea's law) disabled the front TV when the car was in Drive. HOWEVER, if you tweak some stuff in the infotainment screen, you were able to override it. This car was pretty awesome in Korea back when I was young.
BTW at 12:30 it's just a bunch of numbers to call when you need customer service, and roadside assistance.
In case your 2002 Equus breaks down, call 82-2-404-8204 :)
Matthew Kwon thank you
I’m sure they did. I always wanted to go to South Korea. My grandfather fought in the Korean War and he said south Korea was beautiful. And some of the nicest people he ever met was there. 90s was an amazing decade. I’m sure they had some cool things then...even now I’m sure.
Matthew Kwon You can only look at memes in a McLaren MP4-12C if you aren’t driving.
@@Roberob1189 Plz tell him that a random Korean guy from RUclips said "Thank you for your service."
Marco Yoo sadly he passed... :/ but I do appreciate it brother! Be well!
That folding down seat for your legs is the most amazing thing I’ve ever seen ever.
You mentioned it was co-developed with Mitsubishi, and I'm intrigued that you say that because the rear-end tail lights look EXACTLY like the same year model Mitsubishi diamante (just with orange colored bottom lenses instead of clear). I noticed that right off the bat! It's as if they couldn't be bothered to make their own tail lights and just said, "meh, we'll use the ones off the diamante."
That plastic hook on the spare tire compartment isn't just for opening it. It is designed to hook on the trunk opening to hold the lid open while changing the tire. My 2006 Azera (Grandeur) had the same feature.
I’m korean and my grandfather had that car; the front TV turns off when you’re on the road and only turns back on when you stop (for safety)
Do taxi drivers still watch TV while driving?
They do it here also in America. All you got to do is ground the green wire to the metal body. At least that’s what I did growing up.
YEON JOON KIM That is pretty good innovation for 2002.
YEON JOON KIM are Korean cars left hand drive like his car?
Yes. road systems are like america's
Looks like that mood button got alot of use. Lol
Hey man the amount of information you give in this videos is extremely good. After seeing most of your videos I can clearly tell how much work you have put together for a single video but still your subscribers are so low what a shame. You are doing great work man keep it up.
As a Japanese I have to confess I love this car. Definitely upgrade wheels, nothing too ridiculous.
Doug, the type of guy to wear the larger t-shirt under the smaller one when wearing two shirts.
Doug the type of guy to watch Gilmore Girls
TheLegend27 guilty... 😅
Best tv show
I had to Google this because you didnt link it like you promised, was worth it.
S.FLD - going out on a limb here. it means SOUND FIELD
doug the type of guy to still manage to look thicc in cargo shorts
I’ve worked at Hyundai since 2012 as a service tech and I didn’t even know this car existed. I’ve driven several American equuis models, even worked on a few and I had no idea it stretched back pre-2010. They killed it when they the genesis line as it’s own make, but it’s pretty neat to see this on here.
Sorry Everett EQQUS still being build over in Korea. Just did not do as well here. Genesis is the replacement. They said, Genesis was made to be it's own Luxury line.
My condolences. How you like replacing 1.4 million engines? LOL.
I've been on RUclips for quite sometime now , I must say this is the best channel so far.
In Germany these Hyundais were known as the Centennial, they were only offered in 2006 and most of its owners were higher employees/bosses of Hyundai in Europe.
Only 35 cars were offered here in Germany
Lucky me I spotted one of these Hyundais right next to my former workplace last year 😦😳
The were called Centennial in Sweden too, sold only for two years (2002-2003)
Doug pulling out vids from the vault.
StrangeClouds rent is due
B0aty?
Doug the type of guy to watch Gilmore Girls on the rear TV of a Hyundai Equus
Peter cant believe he said that lmao
If only.
RORY AND LOGAN FOREVER!!!
Doug DeMuro You responded to me! My life is complete !
This is my 1st time seeing this EQUUS.. The first one Ive seen is the Up to Date one
Those 4 options for hall club stadium etc were standard on some 80s and 90s stereos . The driver seat heat option is so you can preheat it ready for the passengers arrival in winter, without climbing in the back.
6:07 Because in the back of this car your mood is always green
Dollar bill GREEN
More out of head than your median lunar satellite HAHAHAHAHSHAHAHAHA YOURE SO FREAKIN FUNNY M8
Doug, why haven't you reviewed a P1 yet? McLaren Philadelphia usually has at least one on any given day
Yeah, but their P1s both have like 500 miles on them, so I assume they don't want me driving them. I'd love to do a P1... someday...
Doug DeMuro I'm considering visiting the Philly area during spring break. The chance is slim, but I would love to meet you
If you buy a P1 he'd probably come meet you lol.
Doug DeMuro maybe if you wore better clothes they would let you drive them
No
As of August 2014, the second generation is marketed in South Korea, Russia, China, United States, Canada, Central America, and South America - as well as in the Middle East under the Hyundai Centennial Nameplate
.
The North American Equus features a badge attached on the hood as opposed to the hood ornament, the grille features a horizontal grid pattern like its Genesis sibling as opposed to the vertical one on international models, and an included iPad device with an Equus user's guide application pre-installed as opposed to a traditional owner's manual
First impression. Wow, another review of the LS400 ... then I read Hyundai ... :D
I actually like being able to see the gears change lol
trell-knight hernandez lots of modern cars actually do that. My 2014 E350 for example shows the gear it’s in all the time. D1-D7.
1.3 million subscribers. Extra 300k already!? You started later, but you're _overtaking_ rival channels. You've even passed Shmee150 who hit 1m a few months before you. Dare I say it, could you be the first to go beyond THAT of 2m as an amateur/non commercial car channel?
All Hail King Douglas....The Car King!
Apple Bee Hail daddy Doug.
HAIL DOUG!!
ChrisFix is already over 3 million!
Doug is the type of guy who uses "ChrisFix" as a code for "how long is the line to meet me in person" because he's modest....and very afraid!
I love watching your videos! Your videos should get on tv!
Doug, this patent with front passanger seats popping out was also used in Skoda Superb 1st gen.
The stereo "hall" "stadium" "church" thing refers to reverb types. It essentially adds echo to mimic the location chosen
and S. FLD = Sound Field.
Ok guys, let's raise some ransom money and get Doug out of Dubai. They obviously have him trapped there till he does a featurette on every single weird ass car on their lot. He looks emaciated and wind-swept.
Actually if you watch his Navigator video the date on the radio feature says January 18th or similar, so he's back in America. Or so it seems (insert scary music)
Tomini Classics must have kidnapped him and forced him to promote their classic car dealership.
I'm not paying until he re-reviews the original NSX
I appreciate the fact that Doug has traveled abroad.
The EQUUS's lineage started in 1999. The front hood emblem ornament is of the horse, Pegasus.
This model discussed in this video is so advanced that even in 2022, this car is more advanced than most vehicles on the road today.
Ravi Peiris M.D. (2011 EQUUS owner)
This was my first Doug Demuro video I watched when it got published... How time passes by so quickly..
S.Fld. = Sound Field.
LMacNeill I was guessing sound frequency location dynamics, yours makes more sense
That's the one. We had several home sound systems in those days and each one had "sound field" and EQ options titled "hall", "rock", "jazz", "club", "stadium", "classical", etc. It's just a name for different EQ settings. They were just silly I remember and I don't mind at all that they're gone.
This guy audios.
LMacNeill , how did he nort know 🤪
go figure!
quite embarrasing that the author did not know that....
The exterior screams 90's Lexus sedan.
yes lexus ls400
Interesting. I thought the taillights looked similar to a Galant or something like that.
So did Dodge
Iron Nuka yeah Dodge did with Mitsubishi and they also do it with some Hyundai vehicles in Latin America
Yeah totally Mitsubishi taillights. I believe these were also on the Australian made Mitsubishi Verada
Happy 2019 after 13 month since you posted this video!!!!!!!
Hey Doug, absolutely love your vids. What about making a review of a Lada?
The untold morale of this video is: Hyundai has been relentlessly trying for decades to have a foot hold in almost every car category and that is why it has become what it is today. Whether you like its cars or not, it definitely deserves your respect.
SFLD obviously stands for "Seinfeld," and you can choose the venue it sounds like he's performing in.
Push the button, car goes "What's the deal with airline peanuts!"
the water was cold
Dave Starr h
NO SOUP FOR YOU!
Dave Starr Nope....Jerry would have phrased it "Look at those airline peanuts.....What is wrooong with those peanuts ??" (-;

just Listen with your eyes closed.
lmao!!!!
Omg im so glad they've come a long way
Front Screen has less lag than 99% of modern cars LOL
Piotr Aria Lmao so true
Hall, church, stadium, and club are highly used reverb/EQ characteristics. Actually very common pro audio terms.
What this guy says, there actually is a huge difference between Hall and Church
why would you want the inside of your car to sound like a stadium?
thmsodonoghue reverb adds a lot of depth and sonic quality. A small amount of tasteful reverb can really add to a surround sound playback. The different types of reverb (Hall, stadium, plate, etc.) all have different qualities and colors that can be tailored to the listener or the musician’s taste. The effect isn’t as dramatic as you think it is.
Don't you think the musician would account for their desired amount reverb in the final mix of the song? There is no way in hell a car stereo can match the sound system in a club or arena so why even pretend to try?
thmsodonoghue Yes! They do! Countless hours go into mixing and mastering a song a certain way. Personally, I hate overlaying reverb and effects on a playback device but some people like it. To each their own.
My grandpa owned this car few years ago. I didnt even know about the chair thing even though I hopped in and out of this car so many times lmao
Now we have the 2nd generation Equus.
Doug you should review Hyundai Terracan and Galloper if you can find one. Only available in Korea but I'm sure you can find one if you can find that Equus
Showroom: So Doug you are here in dubai, you have a warehouse full of the most priceless classics there is, what is your pick?
Doug: the HyUnDaI you drive Dood.
Doug, the kind of guy to emphasize the T in TV.
laowhy86 not funny.
Doug should review Winston’s car :)
c milk!!!!
San Kang hahahaha id pay to see that
Jacob Wolfe Jacob!!!
That seat trick blew my mind!
I replayed it.
Kia Amanti (Opirus) also had the nice LED turn signals. This Equus tails looked like the Diamanté’s so funny to learn it was developed in conjunction with Mitsubishi.
I love your videos my man

Doug DeMuro you did not
Doug the kind of guy who doesnt realize that SFLD on a stereo stands for soundfield
S.Fld = Sound field (The acoustic field augmentation to make audio sound more like the environment it was recorded in)
Dsp on the stereo stands for digital sound processor
Hyundai makes cars just for fun, they're actually a biggest shipbuilder in the world.
Make Semi trailers too, oddly enough
They also weirdly produce hard drives and memory cards
They also make TVs, washing machines, mini ovens and many more electronics.
Yes, huge Korean companies that are partly owned/governed by the S. Korean government are into everything. Chebols, I believe they are called.
Hyundai is not owned by any govenment. and they don't make those white electronics since like 20 years ago
Doug is the type of guy who wears safari shorts all day every day
Stevie Wonder how would you know? You can't see it
His tongue is too big for his mouth.
wave runner
Could you give his tongue a Doug score ?
The stuff on the visor are different service centres, the smaller font about what they generally do/fix, and the phone number
S.FLD stands for Sound Sound Field, it was big with computer sound cards about that time. It processed the sound in such a way that was supposed to mimic those environments.
S. Fld is sound field. It adds depth and reverberations. Pos is position, it biases sound towards a certain area of the inside of the car. Sound field was available on many 90s sound systems for homes and cars.
rairadrai yeah when you put a cd in the original PlayStation it has reverb controls as well so really a 90s thing
Came to say this
THANK YOU! I WAS ANNOYED
Here I always thought it stood for Stereo Field.
Also on the stereo, it says "DSP". I know that stands for "Digital Sound Processor" (or Processing) because almost every power speaker nowadays features DSP. Although the DSP button might mean "Display".
the rear light dome looks like it's been in a knife fight
The 'frontseatoption' is great 🤣!
FYI doug dont know if its been posted before, SFLD enables DSP at the top left of the screen. DSP is Digital Sound Processing. It is a feature that is on most home theatre amplifiers. Therefore SFLD likely stands for Sound Field (Setting). Historically it is most often used for "ARENA" or "Rock Stadium" setting to watch live events or sports events at home to sound like you are in the venue itself for better immersion into the viewed event.
Doug the type of guy to sneak up on people at Wal-Mart while humming the 'Mission Impossible' theme.
Sky Dog fuck off it's not true
😂😂😂😂
®ioT wtf 😂
Nick Renda *cough cough* joke
Waka Waka waka
these are going to shoot up in price after this video
“S.FLD” stands for Sound Field aka reverb effect. You hear this as the sound reverberations if you were to clap in either one of these room types (CHURCH/HALL/STADIUM/CLUB). It basically adds sound atmospherics to the audio giving the listener the sonic equivalent of listening to music in one of those rooms.
The hall/church/stadium etc. refers to reverb styles. Old radios used to come with spring reverbs to let you liven up the sound of the music if you wanted to. DSP is just a digital version of those types of effects.
