No o idea if it will work or not as I'm less than an amateur at raising fry or breeding fish in general. Hopefully it does though and wee can enjoy these little baby fish for a while to come 😊

Hey MD.. can you make a video on the equipment you use? Canister filters, lilly pipes, heaters, etc. I know that they're listed in the description... but maybe a breakdown on how you use everything and how you set up the equipment rather than the scape itself.. Getting proper flow etc. That would be very helpful for a beginner like me. Thx.

Have you considered some kind of isolation box for the fry? At least that way they can be kept in the same tank as their mum. Alternatively you could set up a dim light for the night so the parents can see their young and better defend them from night time snackers

EBA’s are great parents though I do separate the male to another tank after the fry are born since they usually start munching on them after two weeks to prepare for their next spawn. Also not so pro tip but it’s how I separate fry is I use an airline tubing and basically become a fry vacuum instead of a gravel vacuum LOL

I will say I've got my Bolivian ram to raise their fry from the 3rd batch and the half that I pulled out develop so much slower than the other half that stayed in the tank with the parents. In less than a month the 3rd batch of fry looked the same size as the 2nd batch of fry that were laid 2 months earlier. crazy how things work

I look at it this way
With the fish being in a tank it's not really a case of interfering with nature.
The fish are being picked off and they have no where to escape that, so I'm fine with MD trying to save a few.

Probably more babies in there than meets the eye. Many have likely just wandered away from that corner. Poss even from the 1st batch.
As for pulling a few babies,.... I think you will be happy that you did. A different view of the growing process that can be learned from.

I completely understand your dillemma. My son saw me get into fishkeeping and he asked me if he could have a small tank with a few fish in it. We got him two neon tetras and two swordtails. Within a day one of the swordtails died (must have been ill from the shop). When we fished him out of the tank (excuse the pun) we found a strange thing...fry at the bottom of the tank just above the gravel. We saw the remaining swordtail go to town on them and my wife was horrified. I Was torn...let nature happen, or save the little fry that I can save. We managed to get 8 of the little ones out of the tank into a glass vase. They have grown tremendously over the last few weeks just feeding them crushed-to-dust tropical pellets. They will make a nice addition to our tanks around the house when fully grown.

May I ask why you didn't just take the other 2 big acaras and "quarantine" them instead? Just untill the fry are big enough to not fit in their mouths. That way you can also see if it's the mom doing the eating or if the numbers are dwindling due to natural selection. Love your tanks mate I can't wait to see the new rainbow tank!

    • @MDFishTanks
      @MDFishTanks  2 года назад +21

It would be many months before the fry would not be able to fit in their mouths. I'd have to do them a completely different setup as it would need to be long term and then I'm a fish breeder 🤣. It's not really the hobby I'm into at this time. Happy to just take a few out though and see what happens. 😊

he developed some kind of buoyancy issue and just sunk to the bottom of the tank and only moved for moved right next to him. He would eat fine and pass the food in a pellet no problem. I took him to a vet for a scan which showed no impaction as well so I was bemused. I then let someone I know take care of him who had axolotls and bred some for a long time as I felt they might be able to find the problem or fix it. Unfortunately Pancho died not that long after and even he couldn't tell me what the issue was :(

Dear MD. Im a huge fan of your work, your videos are an inspiration of dimensions, and also, a huge benefit on my stressed everyday as theyr so pleasant to watch. Regarding this video im gonna follow your approach with interrest, as Ive bread multiple batches of ebc myself, i currently have a tank with 7 adults and 3 breeding pairs, Yeah, they dont Murder each other like they would if only 2 pairs vere there. Reason it works is because the parents dont distinguish their fry from the other pairs. However, I found that the biggest reason for dying Fry is acctually the lack of live food, micro food to be precise, it will result in the stronger ones eating their smaller siblings if the parents dont, its a survival strategy in nature. The parrents will acctually care for them untill theyr quite large. The greatest succes i had was from adding micro infusoria and later on daphnia and mosquito larvae

animals do eat their not healthy or not fully / strong enough babies . I've seen a stork - 6 babies hatched , and the father did eat one and the second one was thrown out of the nest- he was much much smaller than his siblings . the rest of them successfully grown up and left their home nest to start the new-strong ,healthy generation of storks. so happy end after all :)

I found a thin, white worm moving about (no fish in yet). And the plants were all from Aq Gard (abbreviated). Plus I put a new Java fern bought from them in my old tank and 3 danios fell ill 2 weeks later. They were always doing well before the plants. Do you sterilise your plants before planting? Anyone here know of good worm treatments ok for small fish and filter bacteria?

Wow, mama didn't want you near her babies at all! I agree I wouldn't have felt right taking them either.

    1. The big acara is the male, not the smallest one.
    2. You need artemia nauplii for the fry. They are dying because of hunger, nothing else. They cannot eat normal foods in the beginning no matter how small it is.

Evening mate, loving your videos so you've got a subscription from me. I'm interested in CO2 but where is the best place to get the bottle refilled etc? Or where do you go for that 🤔 (UK north east area)

maybe you could get a tank divider for mom and babies...not sure how that would work out though (for next time)

What I would do would be remove the parents around 2 weeks or a little earlier when you still have a high number of fry and just leave he babies in that tank to grow out and then feed baby brine shrimp to the fry.
