Van Halen - Cathedral - THE FULL LESSON

  • In this video, I am giving you a detailed breakdown of Van Halen - Cathedral. When I uploaded a cover of this 2 years ago, I promised viewers that if we got 1000 likes on the video I would do a lesson breaking down the whole thing. And in Summer 2020 just before Ed tragically passed away, I got to the target and it was about time I filmed the lesson for you. Rather than film the lesson immediately, I wanted to let the dust settle after the tragic events of October.
The point of this lesson is not only to breakdown the piece in detail but also to give you the technical guidance to help you approach any version of 'Cathedral' you choose - even if the Van Halen Live Toronto '95 which inspired my cover isn't your favourite version.
    Equipment:
    Amp: Yamaha THR30II
Amp: Yamaha THR10X (in cover version)
Guitar: Charvel Super Stock So-Cal 2014 Silver Metal Flake (In cover version)
Charvel San Dimas MIJ Candy Blue
    EVH Striped Series Circles Guitar

It's a very tricky thing to explain but there are things you can search for that might help you. For the squeals search for the Van Halen horse harmonics. All of the other sounds are whammy bar divebombs. Then the weird thing at the end, I am pushing the strings down so that the string itself makes contact with the bobbin of the bridge pickup making that 'clink' effect
