Van Halen - Cathedral - THE FULL LESSON

- In this video, I am giving you a detailed breakdown of Van Halen - Cathedral. When I uploaded a cover of this 2 years ago, I promised viewers that if we got 1000 likes on the video I would do a lesson breaking down the whole thing. And in Summer 2020 just before Ed tragically passed away, I got to the target and it was about time I filmed the lesson for you. Rather than film the lesson immediately, I wanted to let the dust settle after the tragic events of October.
The point of this lesson is not only to breakdown the piece in detail but also to give you the technical guidance to help you approach any version of 'Cathedral' you choose - even if the Van Halen Live Toronto '95 which inspired my cover isn't your favourite version.
Equipment:
Amp: Yamaha THR30II
Amp: Yamaha THR10X (in cover version)
Guitar: Charvel Super Stock So-Cal 2014 Silver Metal Flake (In cover version)
Charvel San Dimas MIJ Candy Blue
EVH Striped Series Circles Guitar

Van Halen truly rocks in every aspect. No shortage of guitar here.
Epic song of almost 40 years ago !!
Rip Halen
No words, in my opinion, can express how fantastic you are! I, myself appreciate, and thankful for what you do! Thank you
🤘😎🎸 EVH forever
Really kind words man thank you
Sounds excellent. Love that silver sparkle Charvel too.
Funny finding you here. You going to teach this lesson on your channel? ROCK ON DAVE! 👊 🎸
This is going to be epic...
Dude, one thing i like about you is how consistently competent you are across the board.. Over the last few years ive harvested a shitload of extremely valuable lessons. Thanks so much 🙏
...sharing this hard won knowledge is a serious act of altruism... ok, back to jammin. 😀🤘🤘🎸
An EVH is the best guitar to play some VH songs !
I knew it was the 95 version!!! Same notes and little things he added on that Toronto version, trust me i know cause I'd watch it over and over again. To this day i still have it on VHS from when i recorded it on pay per view back in the day
Not sure if this is stereo or not because my phone is mono but if you've ever done this song with a ping pong delay it will change your world.
Thanks for making something so GLORIOUS looking simple and easy to do..... You're a great teacher 🙌🏻
Namaste
You deserve more subs, the best intermediate-advanced teacher on RUclips.
Very kind of you thanks so much!
As ever, your no nonsense approach, but nevertheless cordial presentation is excellent & eminently watchable. Perfectly done old bean.
I was literally just working on this 15 minutes ago...failing miserably! lol... Its the delay settings and the rhythm that is so hard. But i know once you get it... it seems easy. THis video should give me the boost i needed. thanks!
Trust me it’s gets to be really easy just take each note really slow while messing with the volume knob. Sync it up. Also an Evh low friction knob is gonna make this song way easier to play trust.
@@niknak8299 I have a new EVH Bumblebee so I got that covered. Its the delay that Im off on. I have a Boss Gt8 but the setting never seem to be online for Cathedral, and settings for other pedals never have the same titles as the BOSS
Cameron, your amazing!!! Thank you!! If Sammy, Alex and Michael do the Tribute tour as they are talking about your name instantly popped in my head as the best to do Eddie justice to tribute his style. Your an amazing guitarist with the swagger to match!!
Definitely, aliens exist, you are one of them !! Thanks for the cover Mr Cooper, your level of technique is incredible! Take care. A hug
Awesome thanks Cam! Playing the notes is fairly easy on this song, it's the volume swells in time with the delay that creates the biggest challenge! I like how you walked through it without delay first. Great lesson!
Very impressive, thanks for making this video! 👍
Super grateful you posted this. Thank you.
Excellent lesson, awesome choice showing the Toronto concert version.
🎸👍🏻
Killer job Cameron
Nobody:
my brain at 8 am: Stratocooper
An epic composition!! Eddie Van Halen ahead of times!! His legacy will be eternal!!! an Amazing cover, unbelievable effects and technically incredible CONGRATS 👏👏👏👏
Thank you very much for the information, THE best one of this song I have seen, finally it makes sense. You are awesome!
Cameron! Stumbling around RUclips tonight I landed on your Cathedral tutorial and had the thought, "What does Cathedral sound like without the volume swells?" I didn't find a video clip that shows this, so I figured you would be the perfect person to show us.
I teach this whole lesson without delay so hopefully your curiosity was satisfied? Thanks for the comment! 🤘🏻
im gonna need an updated guitar collection video thanks
Just read the title and- thank you for this!
DUDE YOURE THE BEST!!!! IVE WANTED TO PLAY THIS VERSION FOR A WHILE!!! my favorite version is the Tokyo '89 version
Cool! Then use the technical aspects taught in this lesson and apply it to the Tokyo one that's in standard tuning
Great job Cam! Good lesson and pointers. Keep up the great work brother! Rock on 🤘🏻😎
Ok you validated my technique… nice job.
That power chord at 0:26 just got me going hard
Great lesson and for a Great player, you explain it super simple. THX!!
I love the guitar. This is the only time I’ve saw this except for the live version of Unchained. Live in Oakland. Awesome looking. Thanks for the video you’re very talented I enjoyed this very much.
This version of Eddie guitars was always my favorite. If I were to every buy a signature guitar, it would be this one.
Killer lesson! Nailed it. If I close my eyes I would think you are Ed.
Omg it finally happened, thanks a ton Cam!
Been waiting for this lesson. Thank you Cameron. I find Cathedral harder than Eruption. Timing the volume swells has been very hard for me.
WOW!!!!! I kinda figured that was how it’s done!! Thank you so much for showing us all!!!
Cameron, very nice tutorial. I've been tinkering with this one for a while and this really helped clean some problem spots. Thanks!
Very, VERY COOL!
Wish I saw this 20 years ago. Nice lesson. Thx.
FINALLY. I have been waiting for months.
But it was worth it
@@CameronCooper Yes of course it was worth the wait. I have now finally learned the whole thing. It only cost me my volume pot!
Hey Cameron Eddie van Halen is God!!! And God came here where I live in Louisville Kentucky And I followed him every since forever.owens
You sound live without a net Awesome job
Impressive!
This is my favorite part of his live solo and my favorite studio solo.
Unbelievable!!! That was amazing!!!
Im wanting to get the EVH low friction pot but i read replacing it can be difficult. Also getting a knob to fit it because of the number of knurls it has.
Phantastic Cameron...perfect job...playing and sound!!!
Thank you so much.
Absolutely brilliant thank you
Very well done !!!
Great version - you're a source of inspiration !
Nice Coop!!
Thank you Sir.
You amd Wolfgang should get together and become CAM-HALEN 🤘🏼😈🤘🏼
Damn could you imagine!?
Be epic
Nailed it. Good job.
Been watching a while now, since I seen the charvel hot pink San Dimas. Just bought a marshall cab and dsl100hr. Can't wait...
Freaking awesome! Thank you!
Great video I appreciate this.
Your so fn awesome dude! Thank you
Very talented. 🎸. Nice stuff.!
yeeeeessssssssssssssssss I got the legendry lesson today
This is good man..,very good
Hello Cameron. I was wondering if you could do a lesson on the intro peice for live without a net?
The intro piece in live without a net is called ''316'' - there are a lot of lessons on that scattered around. :)
Actually learning the name of the peice certainly helped find more lessons. Thanks Cameron.
Great👍 🤘
Nice very nice!!! Love how you threw your own twist on it too💣💣💣💥💥💥💥💥❤🎸🤘🎸🤘🎸🤘🎸❤
Fantastic! Do you think you could also do mean street?
Could you do a brief lesson breaking down how exactly you got all those crazy sounds following the opening chords? The chaos section.
It's a very tricky thing to explain but there are things you can search for that might help you. For the squeals search for the Van Halen horse harmonics. All of the other sounds are whammy bar divebombs. Then the weird thing at the end, I am pushing the strings down so that the string itself makes contact with the bobbin of the bridge pickup making that 'clink' effect
@@CameronCooper thank you! And thanks again for this lesson. Your playing is an inspiration.
God damn Cam
Thanxxx ...Cam great vid do more vh lessons please much appreciated cheers
Rip......EVH🎸😢🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶🎶
I have more on the way but gotta be careful how often I upload when it comes to Van Halen themed content. Unless I am demoing for EVH Gear, I don't want it to look like like I'm cashing in on his death.
Fun fact, the Frankie he played this on in the 80s only had 21 frets .. he didn't drop it a half step till after the 1984 album .
He seems to vary how many frets it had. He changed necks on it like he changed underwear by the looks of things. But yeah it was originally 21 frets for Cathedral
@@CameronCooper lol that’s hilarious and cool at the same time!
Fuckin awesome man!!!!
By the way...
What do you think about the Floyd Rose tremolo blocks,
especially on the cheap WOLFGANG STANDARD guitars...
What about the big brass blocks some guys are using?
Have you ever checked these out???
I don't mind as long as the guitar stays in tune regardless of what the block is. I have a guitar with a big brass block in and don't hear a huge difference really.
@@CameronCooper All right, thanks a lot.
@@Cherry_Sunburst You need the trem stopper along with the big brass block to really hear a difference. The trem stopper touches the block and then reverberates through the body. Giving it more sustain. Get both... its not expensive and its defintiiely worth it. EVH guitars already have a brass block just not a big brass block.
Your delay... what are you using? Is it that Cubase software that goes with the Yamaha THR? I guess I'm wondering how you record this?
I say in the video I'm using a Cubase plug in
@@CameronCooper oh ok, sorry I missed that.
Love to know how you do those licks that start at 0:28... ?
You should be playing your Edwards les paul
It's not my guitar I don't own one
Awesome lessons Cameron! I watch some of these while eating lol. Anyways do you play any other instruments as well? Just something I’m curious about
Hey Cam any tips on how to stretch fingers some kind of exercises 👌👌👍🤘
Check out my Beat it tutorial from summer 2020
I love your Charvel silver sparkle!!!!! Could you tell me what year and specific model. Its gorgeous.
2014 Charvel Super Stock So Cal. Only 90 were made worldwide and are really hard to find
Sir after u play the cords in intro before u go in chaos u have push something in the volume part what was that and in total what was the effect being used..
I went from a cleaner/crunchy sound to higher gain. The reverb and delay remained the same
Nice playing as usual Cameron! Question, thinking of getting one of the Circles guitar....where did you get the custom pickup ring & tone knob though? Thanks!
RIP EVH 🙏
@Cam...this is amazing. What are your settings on the THR30 for this??
Before doing this make sure your guitar has a low friction volume pot. Made the mistake of not checking a few years back and fried a pot.
EVH's come with them any way but I have destroyed a volume pot before too on another guitar.
First love u
Killer, Cameron
Nice job, Cameron!
I used to play it a long ago...
I didn't remember how fun was it.
Nice sound.
When you say pot you mean knob?
Regards from Rio!
Take care
Hi ! nice sound! could you tell me your settings for echoplex delay? if this is what you use to have the same sound
I said in the lesson what my delay settings are
@@CameronCooper I'm French, you sometimes speak a bit fast so I don't understand everything sorry 😄✌🏻
Hey Cam. Is it possible to get these effects on the Thr30ii without using additional hardware/software.
Not really no
@@CameronCooper Thanks Cam. I was thinking that was the answer but hoping it could be. Thanks for the response, I appreciate you!
SHould this effect channel have distortion??? Otr should this be clean channel? Mine sounds way too distorted and ringy
I trashed my volume knob 4 times. I wondered how did Eddie do it. Then found out tech changes out volume every show
Ed used low friction pots later on. They don't wear out the same
Nice where is this guitar from?
Made in Mexico
hi cam! just would like to ask if you still have your Edwards lts sunburst, and what are your thoughts on it now?
I don't own the guitar it belongs to my Dad. It is a great guitar! But I can never completely gel with Les Pauls.
Gnarly
Thanks, Cam. Can you provide specs/link to recommended Bourns’ part. Thanks!
Google them... EVH Bourne's volume pots
@@CameronCooper Interesting enough. I don’t even think evh guitars come with Bourne pots themselves, at least the striped series ones. Maybe my Wolfgang has got one I’d have to check.
@@ascentiall the only guitars in the EVH range which don't include them are the WG Standards. Everything else has Bourns pots in
@@CameronCooper huh thanks for clearing things up for me
As soon as you gave the warning about the volume knob crapping out I realized it might be in my best interest not to try this 😅 aha maybe I’ll give it a go on my Squire. Incredible tutorial man, very few people have your wealth of knowledge on EVH
Great stuff again but sadly for me just another reason to use my guitar as a coffee table...
But can he play without that moustache 😄
Haha only had a moustache in the last 2 videos on the channel aha
Def some lag on the right
Oh never mind. lol you explained it. Thanks for this!
Thanks for uploading! If you have a second, we tried our hand at an Eddie Van Halen tribute video. As fellow music fans, we'd love if you'd take a listen. It's on our page. Don't be too tough on us :)
Péssimo, esticou a música só pra estragar essa pérola do Ed Van Halen
If you knew your Van Halen, you'd know I actually honoured it. Look at live versions.
