Boscombe Artificial Surf Reef Bait Cam - Bournemouth University

This edited footage is from Boscombe Artificial Surf Reef near Bournemouth in Poole Bay during the summers of 2013 & 2014. GoPro cameras attached to a weighted framework were deployed from a boat; sometimes this rests on the reef surface and at other times on sand next to the edge of the reef. Fish and invertebrates are attracted to bait fixed to a pole extended in front of the camera - a technique known as Baited Remote Underwater Video (BRUV). In 2014 the bait was contained in a cage. This technique is particularly suited to areas where conventional traps or mobile nets are excluded, such as in protected areas or where obstacles create hazards for SCUBA divers. The data collected will be compared with video obtained from other sites within the Bay (see BRUV footage from Durley Rocks).
This research was carried out by staff and students from Bournemouth University and is supported by the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation.
