  • City of Albany are asking community for their feedback on the Artificial Surf Reef project which aims to enhance surfing at Middleton Beach and provide significant economic development to the region.
Funding from Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development has allowed the design phase to progress with Bluecoast Consulting Engineers who were awarded the tender in December.
The City of Albany Artificial Surf Reef survey can be accessed until 14 September at: www.surveymonk...

Amazing! Artificial reefs are fast becoming a big thing and are the way of the future in my opinion. The benefits they have in terms of coastal protection and erosion mitigation is great! Additionally they are completely hidden from view and do not interfere with the natural beauty of the beach. AND they have the potential to be a great break and a spot to snorkel/spearfish. The latter two can be great tourist attractions for a coastal community.

Over a decade ago an artificial surf reef was constructed at Mount Maunganui, New Zealand.
It was a complete and utter failure, waves were almost impossible to surf and even if you could successfully get into one it was over and done with in seconds.
Hopefully the designers of this proposal have a better understanding of how nature works.

I'm glad a council is investing in surfing/ making more surf spots. Just check out the south west, the crowds are getting worse. It would be great if the Mandurah council invested in an artificial reef. They were more than happy to build large developments right near the beach that impacted wave quality.

Would have to do with the way we are geographically situated. With the majority of swells pushing up from the south west and the way W.A is shaped it lends itself to a perfect scenario for left hand breaks.

So the take-off zone will be 300 metres from the beach! Wow. Do people understand that?
That's as far out as the take-off zone at Main Break at Margaret River, from the beach.
That is not 'fun', especially on that coast.
Also, dont repeat the blunder that happened at Cable Stations reef at Leighton where allegedly someone in the project hierarchy got cold feet about public injury & litigation and made a last minute change to make it deeper than designed, which is why it hardly breaks and is a failure.

Not sure it is a good idea to play around with what has evolved over millions of years. Look at the problems seabreaks at Emu Point have caused. How will an artificial reef effect the rest of the coast line? Will it change the currents and cause more coastal erosion in some parts and dump more sand in others?

Wow short sighted approach. Fixed location single direction wave. Fixed subsurface structure that has proven to have detrimental change to the dynamic of inshore ocean currents. Many artificial reefs suffer damage on large swell events and then need to be repaired and or maintained. Reliant on wind and swell conditions for optimal performance. These drawbacks could easily be solved with 3 or 4 large pylons supporting floating surf reefs. Strategically positioned for different swell size and skill levels. Direction adjustable for wind and swell. Subsurface semi floating with minimal impact to seabed current flow and environment. Can be shark netted for added protection and peace of mind, especially in SW with GW migration paths following whales. Suggest that the council checks into Webber Surf Reefs, one of the lowest environment impact solutions that exists today. But highly unlikely they will, too many already vested interests and ego's that would poo poo it.
